“I worshipped the most desirable lotus feet of Bhūtattāḻvār—who rendered the nectarean divine songs known as Iraṇḍām Tiruvandādi starting with the words anbē tagaḷi and who appeared in the Divya Desam called Tirukkaḍal Mallai which is highly glorified and cool pearls are brought and dumped on its sea shore by the ocean waterfor liberation from the birth-death cycle.”

“I have lit the bright lamp of transcendental knowledge—with the rendition of these Tamiḻ songs in which love of Godhead is the lamp, enthusiasm for devotional service is the ghee, and ecstatic feelings is the wick—glorifying Nārāyaṇa, the Lord of my melting ātma.”     

2183 jñānattāl naṅguṇarndu * nāraṇan tan nāmaṅgaḷ * 

 dhānattāl matṛṛavan pēr sātṛṛināl ** - vānattu

 aṇiyamarar * ākkuvikkum aqdanṛē * naṅgaḷ

“If we fully understand the glories of the holy names of Nārāyaṇa and chant with love, He, who is the master of the eternally serving nitya-sūris, will make us also nitya-sūris, the eternal residents of Vaikuṇṭha.”

“Those who lovingly worship the lotus feet of the Lord of the Milk Ocean with fresh and fragrant flowers will attain the transcendental abode of the master of nitya-sūris, the resplendent Vaikuṇṭha, which (has never been seen but) has been only heard about by the pious demigods.”      

2185 nagariḻaittu nittilattu * nāṇmalar koṇḍu * āṅgē 

 tigaḻu maṇivayiram sērttu ** - nigarillāp 

 paiṅgkamalam ēndip * paṇindēn panimalarāḷ * 

 aṅgam valam koṇḍān aḍi            4 

“I have made my heart the abode of the Lord and worshipped the lotus feet of that Lord who keeps mother Lakṣmī, born on a cool lotus flower, on His right chest with the matchless lotus flower (of my devotion), with love (as the outer petals), and with sapphire gemstone and diamond (my desire for union with Him which forms the inner petals and the pollen grains).”      

2186 aḍi mūnṛil ivvulagam * anṛu aḷandāy pōlum * 

 aḍi mūnṛu irandu avani koṇḍāy ** - paḍi ninṛa 

 nīrōda mēni * neḍumālē! * nin aḍiyai 

 yārōda vallār aṛindu?                5 

“O Trivikrama, the Supreme Lord with dark ocean-hue! When You appeared on this earth (as Vāmana) You begged and obtained (from Bali) three feet of land and acted as if to cover the planetary systems with three steps (but covered in just two steps. Your true intention was to keep the third step on the head of Bali and push Him down to the lower planetary system); is there anybody who can understand Your lotus feet (Your intentions) and talk about them? (Nobody)”

 

2187 aṛindu aindum uḷḷaḍakki * āymalar koṇḍu * ārvam 

 seṛinda manattarāyc cevvē ** - aṛindu avan tan

 pērōdi ēttum * peruntavattōr kāṇbarē * 

 kārōda vaṇṇan kaḻal             6 

“Those fortunate pure devotees—who possess the transcendental knowledge (of the opulences of the Lord and the dangers of sense gratification), control the senses (and engage them in devotional service), collect fresh flowers, are full of enthusiasm, understand the truth (their relationship with the Lord) well, incessantly chant His holy names, and glorify Him—will see and worship the lotus feet of the dark ocean-hued Lord.”    

2188 kaḻal eḍuttu vāy maḍittuk * kaṇ suḻanṛu * mātṛṛār 

 aḻal eḍutta sindaiyarāy añja ** - taḻal eḍutta

 pōrāḻi ēndinān * ponmalarc cēvaḍiyai * 

ōrāḻi neñjē! uhandu               7 

“O my devoted heart! Please desire to worship the lovely lotus feet of Lord Trivikrama who extended His legs up, snarling at Namuci (son of Bali) and other asuras who were terrified by His whirling angry eyes, and who wields the fiery and chivalrous disc weapon.”

                                                         

2189 uhandu unnai vāṅgi * oḷi niṛaṅgkoḷ koṅgai * 

 aham kuḷira uṇṇenṛāḷāvi ** - uhandu 

 mulai uṇbāy pōlē * muninduṇḍāy * nīyum 

 alai paṇbāl ānamaiyāl anṛu          8 

“When the demon Pūtanā took You up on her lap, displaying affection, and offered her engorged breast to Your mouth saying, ‘Suck to Your heart’s content,’ as a baby You sucked not only the milk but also her life air with anger.”    

2190 anṛu adu kaṇḍu añjāda * āycci unakku iraṅgi * 

 ninṛu mulai tanda innīrmaikku ** - anṛu 

 varan muṛaiyāl nī aḷanda * mākaḍal sūḻ jñālam * 

 perumuṛaiyāl eydumō pērttu?            9 

“Even after seeing the demon Pūtanā lying dead, mother Yaśodā, without fear but with love, offered her breast to you; will Your act of measuring and retrieving the planetary systems (from Bali), due to Your relationship with the demigods, be equivalent to her act of love?”  

2191 pērttanai * māśakaṭam piḷḷaiyāy * maṇ irandu 

 kāttanai * palluyirum kāvalanē! ** - ēttiya 

 nāvuḍaiyēn pūvuḍaiyēn * ninnuḷḷi ninṛamaiyāl *

 kāvaḍiyēn paṭṭa kaḍai             10 

“O protector! As a baby You kicked and shattered the demoniac wheel; You begged and obtained the earth; You are the protector of all the living beings; as Your devotee, my tongue is habituated to praise You; kindly relieve the past sinful reactions of this servant of Yours.”

2192 kaḍai ninṛu amarar kaḻal toḻudu ** nāḷum 

 iḍai ninṛa * inbattarāvar ** - puḍai ninṛa 

 nīrōda mēni * neḍumālē! * nin aḍiyai 

 yārōda vallār avar?             11 

“(Materialistic) People will visit the temples of the demigods, fall at their feet, and worship them for a long time and obtain intermediate and temporary benefits (like living in heaven); o Supreme Lord with dark ocean-hue! Is there anybody who praises and worships Your lotus feet?” (Nobody)  

2193 avar ivar enṛillai * aravaṇaiyān pādam * 

 evar vaṇaṅgi ēttādār eṇṇil ** - pavarum 

 seḻuṅgkadirōn oṇmalarōn * kaṇṇudalōn anṛē? * 

 toḻuntahaiyār nāḷum toḍarndu      12 

“On searching, it is found that without exception everyone worships the lotus feet of the Lord reclining on the serpent bed; don’t the sun with thousands of luminant rays, Brahmā seated on the lotus flower, and Rudra with the third eye visit the Lord daily and worship Him?”  

2194 toḍareḍutta māl yānai * sūḻkayam pukkañji * 

 paḍareḍutta paiṅgkamalam koṇḍu ** - anṛu iḍaraḍukka

 āḻiyān * pādam paṇindanṛē? * vānavar kōn 

 pāḻi tān eyditṛṛup paṇḍu         13 

“When the elephant king (Gajendra) who is powerful enough to rip off the chain binding the leg and run off stepped into the vast lake to pluck a fully bloomed lovely lotus (to offer to the Lord), his leg was caught by a mighty crocodile and in fear (that the flower should be offered while it is fresh) didn’t he call loudly the Lord wielding the disc weapon to save him? On being saved by the Lord, that elephant king attained Vaikuṇṭha, the abode of the Lord.”  

2195 paṇḍu ipperum padiyai ākki * paḻi pāvam 

 koṇḍu * iṅgu vāḻvāraik kūṛādē ** - eṇtisaiyum 

 pērtta karam nāṅguḍaiyān * pērōdip pēdaigāḷ! *

 tīrttakararāmin tirindu          14 

 “O materialistic people! Instead of focusing on filling and growing your bellies, committing more and more sins unknowingly and knowingly, and eulogising other materialistic people (for profit), always chant the holy names of the four-shouldered Lord Trivikrama who extended and covered the eight directions, visit all the holy places, and become a pure devotee.” 

2196 tirindadu veñjamattut * tēr kaḍavi * anṛu 

 pirindadu * sītaiyai mān pin pōy ** - purindaduvum 

 kaṇ paḷḷi koḷḷa * aḻagiyadē! * nāgattin 

 taṇ paḷḷi koḷvān tanakku               15 

“For the Lord who comfortably reclines on the cool serpent bed, becoming a chariot driver in the terrible Mahābhārata war; running after the magic deer and getting separated from mother Sītā, and sleeping on the hard ground were necessary?” (Bhūtattāḻvār laments the difficulties the Lord underwent in various incarnations for delivering His devotees).    

2197 tanakkaḍimai paṭṭadu * tān aṛiyānēlum * 

 manattaḍaiya vaippadām mālai ** - vanattiḍarai

 ēriyām vaṇṇam * iyatṛṛum iduvallāl * 

 māriyār peyhiṛpār matṛṛu?           16 

“Like preparing the plain ground by digging a big lake (which is our effort) to hold the rainwater (rain can come only by the mercy of the Lord), one should realise that he is an eternal servant of the Lord and engage in sādhana-bhakti (which is our effort) and wait hopefully for the love of Godhead to appear in our heart (love of Godhead can appear only by the mercy of the Lord).”   

                                                         

2198 matṛṛār iyalāvar? * vānavar kōn māmalarōn * 

 sutṛṛum vaṇaṅgum toḻilānai ** - otṛṛaip 

 piṛai irunda * señjaḍaiyān pin senṛu * mālaik 

 kuṛai irandu tān muḍittān koṇḍu      17 

“The Lord who is worshipped from the sideways by Indra, the chief of the demigods, and Brahmā, seated on the lotus flower (as they are afraid to approach directly), relieved the curse of Śiva, who holds the crescent moon on his matted hair and who   begged for His mercy; who else other than the Supreme Lord can be merciful?

 

2199 koṇḍadu ulagam * kuṛaḷ uruvāyk kōḷ ariyāy * 

 oṇtiṛalōn mārvattu ugir vaittadu ** - uṇḍaduvum

 tān kaḍanda ēḻulagē * tāmaraikka māl oru nāḷ * 

 vān kaḍandān seyda vaḻakku         18 

“Begging from Bali and covering all the planetary systems with His legs, appearing in the wonderful form of Nṛsiṁhadeva and tearing off the chest of the mighty Hiraṇyakaśipu with His nails, and swallowing and keeping all the planetary systems, measured earlier by Him, in His stomach (to protect from maha-pralaya)are incredible pastimes of the lotus-eyed Lord whose glories are unlimited.”   

2200 vaḻakkanṛu kaṇḍāy * vali śakaṭam setṛṛāy * 

 vaḻakkenṛu nī madikka vēṇḍā ** - kuḻakkanṛu 

 tīviḷavin kāykkeṛinda * tīmai tirumālē! * 

 pār viḷaṅgac ceydāy paḻi          19 

“O Tirumālē! (As a baby) You kicked and shattered the strong Śakaṭāsura; You may think that it was right on Your part, but it is not (You could have hurt Your tender legs); (later) You threw Vatsāsura, the calf demon, on Kapitāsura, the woodapple tree demon and killed both; this is also an inappropriate deed in the eyes of the world (as a small boy should not do dangerous acts).” 

There is a style of Tamiḻ poetry which is loosely translated as “subtle sarcasm or subtle praise.” The poetry may sound like flattery, but the hidden intent is criticism or the poetry may sound like criticism, but the intent is praise. In this poem, though it looks like Bhūtattāḻvār is criticising Kaṇṇan, he is praising His incredible pastimes.     

2201 paḻi pāvam kaiyahatṛṛip * palkālum ninnai * 

 vaḻi vāḻvār vāḻvarām mādō ** - vaḻuvinṛi 

 nāraṇan tan nāmaṅgaḷ * naṅguṇarndu naṅēttum * 

 kāraṇaṅgaḷ tāmuḍaiyār tām       20 

“Those who always worship You and get their material miseries and sinful reactions eliminated and those who have understood clearly the purport of Your holy names and chant continuously will live happily.”  

2202 tām uḷarē * tam uḷḷam uḷḷuḷadē * tāmaraiyin 

 pūvuḷadē * ēttum poḻuduṇḍē ** - vāman 

 tirumaruvu * tāḷ maruvu senniyarē * sevvē 

 arunaragam sērvadaridu           21 

“Though people have bodies without any defect, minds without any delusions, plenty of time to praise the Lord, heads to bow down to the lotus feet of Vāmanadev, and there are lakes full of lotus flowers (suitable to offer to the Lord), it is a great puzzle that many people still go to hell.”

 peruha muyalvāraip petṛṛāl ** - kariyadōr 

 veṇkōṭṭu māl yānai * venṛi muḍittanṛē * 

 taṇkōṭṭu māmalarāl tāḻndu         22 

“If we get the mercy of the Lord, who is always eager to help His devotees, even impossible tasks will become very easy; (for example) the white-tusked, huge elephant king surrendered and offered lotus flowers bloomed in the lake to the Lord and was saved from the crocodile and got liberated; we need to surrender to the Lord and not just depend on our strength.”   

2204 tāḻndu varam koṇḍu * takka vahaihaḷāl * 

 vāḻndu kaḻivārai vāḻvikkum ** - tāḻnda 

 viḷaṅgkanikkuk * kanṛu eṛindu vētṛṛuruvāy * jñālam

 aḷandu aḍikkīḻk koṇḍa avan          23 

“The Lord who threw Vatsāsura on the woodapple tree laden with fruits (to kill both Vatsāsura and Kapitāsura and also to make the fruits fall as desired by His cowherd friends); who as Vāmana measured and obtained the planetary systems will provide whatever those who lead a pious life seek (wealth, liberation, or Bhakti) from Him bowing down at His lotus feet.”    

2205 avan kaṇḍāy nanneñjē! * āraruḷum kēḍum * 

 avan kaṇḍāy aimpulanāy ninṛān ** - avan kaṇḍāy

 kātṛṛut tī nīr vān * karuvarai maṇ kārōda * 

 sītṛṛat tīyāvānum senṛu           24 

“O my good heart! Know that both good and bad reactions occur as per His will; He is the five senses as well as the five elements – wind, fire, water, sky, and earth; He is also the dark mountains; He is also the one who (decides to bring an end to the creation and) creates the huge fire which engulfs the planets and dries up the oceans.”    

2206 senṛadu ilaṅgai mēl * sevvē tan sītṛṛattāl * 

 konṛadu irāvaṇanaik kūṛuṅgāl ** - ninṛaduvum 

 vēyōṅgu taṇsāral * veṅkaṭamē * viṇṇavar tam 

vāyōṅgu tolpugaḻān vandu           25 

“The Lord who is eternally glorious and is eulogised by the demigods rapidly went to Laṅkā and in great anger killed Rāvaṇa; and, to deliver His devotees He came and stood in Veṅkaṭa Hills where the bamboo plants grow very tall and there is a constant cool shower.”     

2207 vandittavanai * vaḻi ninṛa aimbhūtam * 

 aindum agattaḍakki ārvamāy ** - undip 

 paḍiyamarar vēlaiyān * paṇḍu amararkku īnda * 

 paḍiyamarar vāḻum padi              26 

“The Vaiṣṇavas eternally live in Veṅkaṭa Hills, controlling their five senses which are a stumbling block for devotion, and worship the Lord with love; that abode was given to the nitya-muktas by the Lord in the Ocean of Milk and who is worshipped by the demigods who come pushing each other to worship Him.”

 

2208 padiyamaindu nāḍip * parutteḻunda sindai * 

 madiyuriñji vānmugaḍu nōkki ** - kadi mihuttu am 

 kōl tēḍi ōḍum * koḻundadē pōnṛadē *

“My heart which is fixed in Veṅkaṭa Hills is driving the mind to cross beyond the moon and the coverings of the universe and go in search of the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha like a creeper grows in search of support like a tree.” 

2209 manattuḷḷān veṅkaṭattān * mākaḍalān * matṛṛum 

 ninaippariya * nīḷ araṅgattu uḷḷān ** - enaippalarum 

 dēvādi dēvan * enappaḍuvān * munnoru nāḷ 

 māvāy piḷanda mahan              28 

“The Lord who is hailed as the Supreme Personality of Godhead by the unlimited Vaiṣṇavas and who reclines in the Milk Ocean, once as a boy split the mouth of the Keśī demon; who reclines in the incredible temple of Śrīraṅgam; and, who stands in Veṅkaṭa Hills is now residing in my heart.”    

2210 mahanāhak koṇḍeḍuttāḷ * māṇ pāya koṅgai * 

 aganāra uṇban enṛuṇḍu ** - mahanait tāy 

 tēṛāda vaṇṇam * tiruttināy * ten ilaṅgai 

 nīṛāha eydaḻittāy! nī          29 

“(O Lord!) You, who shot arrows and destroyed Laṅkā, decided to suck the milk from the engorged breast of the demon Pūtanā who came in the form of a mother and sucked the milk along with her life air; this deed of Yours has instilled fear in the mind of Your mother.”  

2211 nī anṛu ulagaḷandāy * nīṇḍa tirumālē! * 

 nī anṛu ulagiḍandāy enbarāl ** - nī anṛu 

 kārōdam mun kaḍaindu * pin aḍaittāy mākaḍalai * 

 pērōda mēnip pirān!            30 

“O ocean-hued Lord! O Lord of incredible glories! Your devotees hail that once You measured and retrieved the planetary system; in another age, You brought up the sunk earth from the ocean's depths; later, You churned the ocean and (as Rāma) built a bridge across the ocean.”

 kurānal seḻumpōdu koṇḍu ** - varāhattu 

 aṇi uruvan * pādam paṇiyum avar kaṇḍīr * 

 maṇi uruvam kāṇbār mahiḻndu              31 

“Those who worship the lotus feet of the beautiful Varāha form of the Lord with fragrant flowers daily glorifying Him, ‘O benevolent Lord! (With Your grace) Every day is auspicious,’ will see the transcendental form of the Lord and worship Him in bliss.”   

2213 mahiḻndadu sindai * tirumālē! * matṛṛum 

 mahiḻndadu * un pādamē pōtṛṛi ** - mahiḻnda 

 aḻal āḻi saṅgam * avai pāḍi āḍum * 

 toḻilāgam sūḻndu tuṇindu          32 

“O Lord of Śrī-Lakṣmī! My heart is rejoicing in Your thoughts; my tongue is also rejoicing in glorifying Your lotus feet; my body is happily fixed in devotional service to You and sings and dances glorifying Your transcendental weapons – the disc which spits fire on enemies and the conch shell.” 

2214 tuṇindadu sindai * tuḻāy alaṅgal * aṅgam 

 aṇindavan pēr * uḷḷattup palkāl ** - paṇindaduvum

 vēypiṛaṅgu sāral * viṛal veṅkaṭavanaiyē * 

 vāytiṛaṅgaḷ sollum vahai               33 

“My heart is completely engaged in always remembering the holy names of the Lord adorned with a garland of tulasī leaves; my body always bows down (to the Lord); and my tongue is also fixed in glorifying the auspicious qualities of the majestic Lord in Veṅkaṭa Hills, the slopes of which are covered with bamboo plants.”   

2215 vahaiyāl avani * irandaḷandāy pādam * 

 pugaiyāl naṛumalarāl munnē ** - miha vāynda 

 anbākki ētti * aḍimaippaṭṭēn unakku * 

en bākkiyattāl ini                  34 

“Once You cleverly begged, measured, and retrieved the planetary systems; because of Your mercy, I have become Your eternal servant and worship those lotus feet with love offering incense and fragrant flowers.”

 inidenbar taṇṇīrum endāy! ** - inidenṛu 

 kāmanīr vēḷādu * nin perumai vēṭparēl * 

 sēmanīrāgum siṛidu                35 

“My Lord! Common men like to engage in sense gratification; though the renunciants reject sense gratification they are attached to food and water; if people reject sense gratification and attachment to food and water but develop attachment to Your glories and engage in devotional service that will be a great protection for them.”  

2217 siṛiyār perumai * siṛidin kaṇ eydum * 

 aṛiyārum tāmaṛiyār āvar ** - aṛiyāmai 

 maṇ koṇḍu maṇ uṇḍu * maṇ umiḻnda māyan enṛu * 

 eṇ koṇḍu en neñjē! iru            36

“The passion (for wealth and power leading to worship of demigods) and false ego of mean-minded men will only push them down further; similarly, the ignorant will never listen to the advise of the wise and will fall down; o my heart! You should always remember the glories of the incredible Lord who cleverly retrieved the planetary systems from Bali, who swallowed them and brought them out and remain fixed (in His service).”

“O Lord who created the knowledgeable four-headed Brahmā on the glorious lotus flower sprouted from Your large and cool navel! If we do not glorify and worship Your lotus feet which is the shelter for all in the entire creation, our many births are of no benefit.”     

2219 emakkenṛu irunidiyam * ēmāndirādē * 

 tamakkenṛum sārvam aṛindu ** - namakkenṛum 

 mādhavanē ennum * manam paḍaittu * matṛṛavan pēr 

 ōduvadē nāvināl ōttu              38 

“One should not deceive himself by considering their impermanent wealth as their own and prtoection; instead, he should find out how he can get true protection (from material miseries and birth and death) and surrender to Mādhava as His eternal servant; then, chanting His holy names should be the only job of the tongue.”

“O foolish men who surrender to the demigods! If you can learn and chant the Vedic hymns that’s beneficial to you; if you cannot do that, chant the holy names of Mādhava as the holy names are the essence of the Vedas; this is the conclusion of the Vedas too; so, learn to worship the Lord by chanting His holy names.”

“Before your body shrinks and the phlegm spreads all over the body and blocks the breath (at the time of death) think of the lotus feet of the Lord whose chest is decorated by mother Lakṣmī; beware of sense gratification which can cover your intelligence and make you ignorant of the knowledge of the Lord.” 

2222 poruḷāl amarulagam * pukkiyalal āhādu * 

 aruḷāl aṛam aruḷum anṛē? ** - aruḷālē 

 māmaṛaiyōrkku īnda * maṇivaṇṇan pādamē *

“One can not attain heaven with wealth but it has to be awarded by the most benevolent Lord as a result of one’s good deeds; O my heart! Never forget to meditate on the lotus feet of the blue sapphire gemstone-hued Lord who offers liberation to the Vedic seers.”

“I wish to worship the majestic shoulders of the Lord of mother Lakṣmī: those who wish so will never be born again; and, those who worship those transcendental shoulders will reject the sense enjoyment available easily to people.”  

2224 tōḷ iraṇḍeṭṭēḻum * mūnṛum muḍi anaittum * 

tāḷ iraṇḍum vīḻac * caram turandān ** - tāḷ iraṇḍum

“The most beneficial action of my arms would be to worship the lotus feet of those Vaiṣṇavas who worship the lotus feet of the Lord who shot arrows to cut off the twenty shoulders and the ten heads (of Rāvaṇa).” 

2225 siṛandārkku eḻutuṇaiyām * seṅgaṇmāl nāmam * 

 maṛandārai māniḍamā vaiyēn ** - aṛam tāṅgum 

 mādhavanē! ennum * manam paḍaittu * matṛṛavan pēr

“I will not consider those who forget the holy names (of the Lord), which are the lifeline of the Vaiṣṇavas, as human beings at all; (o my heart!) always chant the holy names of the lotus-eyed Lord remembering that He is the maintainer of dharma.” 

2226 uḷadenṛu iṛumāvār * uṇḍillai enṛu * 

 taḷardal adan arugum sārār ** - aḷavariya 

 vedattān veṅkaṭattān * viṇṇōr muḍi tōyum *

“The devotees of the Lord who is revealed in the unlimited Vedic scriptures and who stands in Veṅkaṭa Hills are never proud of their wealth; even if they lose their impermanent material wealth, they do not cry and fall at the lotus feet of the Lord whose lotus feet are touched by the heads of the nitya-muktas.”     

2227 payinṛadu araṅgam tirukkōṭi * pannāḷ

“Śrīraṅgam and Tirukkoṭṭiyūr are the eternal abodes of the blue sapphire gemstone-hued Lord who has very benevolent long hands; Veṅkaṭa Hills is also His eternal abode; Tirunīrmalai, the jewel of this world and which has many beautiful groves, is also His eternal abode.” 

2228 mālai ari uruvan * pāda malar aṇindu * 

 kālai toḻudeḻumin kaikōli ** - jñālam 

 aḷandu iḍandu uṇḍu umiḻnda * aṇṇalai matṛṛallāl

“Realise that the Supreme Lord who measured the entire earth with one foot, lifted the earth (from the depths of the ocean), swallowed the earth, and brought it out later, resides in the hearts of His devotees; remember that He appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva (for the sake of His devotee); and, lead your life worshipping His lotus feet every morning with folded palms and decorating them with fragrant flowers.”    

2229 uṇarndāy maṛai nāṅgum * ōdināy nīdi * 

 maṇandāy malarmagaḷ tōḷ mālē! ** - maṇandāy pōy 

 vēyiruñjāral * viyaliru jñālam sūḻ * 

 māyiruñjōlai malai             48 

“O Supreme Lord! You reveal the four Vedas (to Brahmā after every mahā-pralaya); You also provide the smṛti-śāstras (through Manu and other scholarly seers) which explain the substance of the Vedas; You embrace mother Lakṣmī born on a lotus flower; and You happily reside on the hills of Tirumāliruñjōlai which the devotees in this world circumambulate.” 

2230 malai ēḻum * mānilaṅgaḷ ēḻum adira * 

 kulai sūḻ kurai kaḍalgaḷ ēḻum ** - mulai sūḻnda

 nañjurattup peṇṇai * navinṛuṇḍa nāvan enṛu *

“O my heart! Call out loud and clear without any fear, “‘O Lord who happily sucked with His reddish lips the poison-laced breast of the demon Pūtanā!’ Let the seven mountains, the seven islands, and the seven oceans resound with His name!”

“I call out loud, for all to hear, the blemishless holy names of the Supreme Lord, ‘O Gopāla Kṛṣṇa with unique form and qualities!’ ‘O incredible Lord!’ and, ‘O Yādava!’ as called by those in Gokula.”  

2232 madikkaṇḍāy neñjē! * maṇivaṇṇan pādam * 

 madikkaṇḍāy matṛṛavan pēr tannai ** - madikkaṇḍāy

 pērāḻi ninṛu * peyarndu kaḍal kaḍainda 

 nīrāḻi vaṇṇan niṛam                 51 

“O heart! Remember the lotus feet of the blue sapphire gemstone-hued Lord; meditate on the body hue of the ocean-hued Lord who got up from His yoga-nidrā and churned the Ocean of Milk to get ambrosia for the demigods; and always chant His holy names.”  

2233 niṛam kariyan * seyya neḍumalarāḷ mārvan * 

aṛam periyan āradu aṛivār? ** - maṛam purinda 

 vāḷarakkan pōlvānai * vānavar kōn dānattu * 

 nīḷ irukkaikku uyttān neṛi            52 

“The rain cloud-hued Lord who keeps reddish-hued mother Lakṣmī, seated on a lotus flower, on His chest is very merciful; (for instance) who can understand His mercifulness on king Bali, who was an enemy (of the demigods) like the sword-wielding Rāvaṇa (and should have been killed), whom He sent to Pātāla-loka, as opulent as the Indra-loka, to live there for a long time?     

2234 neṛiyār kuḻaṛkatṛṛai * mun ninṛu pin tāḻndu * 

 aṛiyādu iḷaṅgiri enṛeṇṇi ** - piṛiyādu 

 pūṅgkoḍikkaḷ vaihum * porupunal kunṛu enṛum * 

 veṅkaṭamē yām virumbum veṛpu         53 

 “Veṅkaṭa Hills, known for its many streams and popularly called Tirumalai—where saints sit in meditation for a long time and their hair grows as a bunch in the front and hangs at the back; flower creepers catch the hair (thinking that it is a small hill) and grow on it permanently—is the Hill which we favour.”

2235 veṛpenṛu iruñjōlai * veṅkaṭam enṛu ivviranḍum * 

 niṛpenṛu nī madikkum nīrmai pōl ** - niṛpenṛu 

 uḷaṅgkōyil * uḷḷam vaittu uḷḷinēn * veḷḷattu 

 iḷaṅgkōyil kaiviḍēl enṛu             54 

“You have considered Tirumāliruñjōlai, known as (south) Tirumalai, as well as Veṅkaṭa Hills as Your favourite abodes; similarly, You have considered the temple of my heart also as Your favourite abode, but I pray that please do not leave the Bālālayam (primary temple), the Ocean of milk.”     

2236 enṛum maṛandaṛiyēn * ēḻpiṛappum eppoḻudum * 

 ninṛu ninaippoḻiyā nīrmaiyāl ** - venṛi 

 aḍalāḻi koṇḍa * aṛivanē! * inbak 

 kaḍalāḻi nī aruḷik kāṇ            55 

“O omniscient Lord wielding the victorious and effulgent disc! Since You have not forgotten me through all my births and miseries, I have also never forgotten You; kindly grant me the bliss (Vaikuṇṭha) too.” 

2237 kāṇak kaḻikādal * kaimikkuk kāṭṭināl * 

 nāṇappaḍum enṛāl nāṇumē? ** - pēṇik 

 karumālaip * ponmēni kāṭṭā mun kāṭṭum *

“When the desire to see the Lord swells like an ocean, if it has to be controlled, is it possible to do so? (No, but no need to worry). Even before the dark-hued Lord reveals His beautiful form, our most merciful mother Lakṣmī will lovingly reveal His form to us.”    

2238 tirumaṅgai ninṛaruḷum * deyvam nā vāḻttum * 

 karumam kaḍaippiḍimin kaṇḍīr ** - urimaiyāl 

 ēttinōm pādam * iruntaḍakkai endai pēr * 

 nāl tisaiyum kēṭṭīrē? nām           57 

“It’s our birthright to worship the lotus feet, chant the holy names, and glorify the Lord on whose chest mother Lakṣmī resides eternally; we also worship and glorify the Lord with long hands; O all those in the four directions, did you hear?”     

2239 nām petṛṛa nanmaiyum * nāmaṅgai nanneñjattu * 

 ōmbi irundu emmai ōduvittu ** - vēmbin 

 poruḷ nīrmai āyinum * ponnāḻi pāḍenṛu * 

 aruḷ nīrmai tanda aruḷ           58 

“Though it (singing the glories of the Lord) is bitter like the neem (Bhūtattāḻvār was very humble to project himself as a common man), goddess Saraswati, staying in my heart, induced me to eulogise the effulgent disc weapon (of the Lord); the benefit I obtained because of the glorification (of the Lord and His paraphernalia) is because of the mercy of the naturally benevolent Supreme Lord.”  

2240 aruḷ purinda sindai * aḍiyār mēl vaittu * 

 poruḷ terindu kāṇgutṛṛa appōdu ** - iruḷ tirindu

nōkkinēn nōkki * ninaindēnatoṇkamalam * 

 ōkkinēn ennaiyum aṅgu ōrndu          59 

“When the Lord took mercy on me, this servant, removed my ignorance and revealed the truth, I meditated on His lotus feet; on realising that there is no better shelter, I surrendered my ātma at those lotus feet.”

2241 ōr uruvan allai * oḷi uruvam nin uruvam * 

 īruruvan enbar irunilattōr ** - ōr uruvam 

 ādiyām vaṇṇam * aṛindār avar kaṇḍīr * 

 nīdiyāl maṇ kāppār ninṛu           60 

“You are not a formless person, You are the most effulgent form and the ultimate shelter for all; whereas, the māyāvādis on this earth consider You formless. Those who realise that You are a person and the most benevolent, sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha, are the true protectors of this earth.”   

2242 ninṛadōr pādam * nilam pudaippa * nīṇḍa tōḷ 

senṛu aḷandadu enbar tisai ellām ** - anṛu 

karumāṇiyāy * iranda kaḷvanē! * unnaip 

 piramāṇittār petṛṛa pēṛu!           61 

“O thief who went in the form of dark Vāmana and begged (three feet of) earth (from Bali)! The devotees say that with one foot You covered the entire bhū-maṇḍala and Your expanding shoulders covered all the directions and the upper planetary system; Your incredible deeds are glorified by Your devotees!” 

2243 pēṛonṛu munnaṛiyēn * petṛṛaṛiyēn pēdaimaiyāl * 

 māṛenṛu solli vaṇaṅginēn ** - ēṛin 

 perutteruttam kōḍosiyap * peṇṇasaiyin pin pōy * 

 eruttiṛutta nallāyar ēṛu           62 

“Desiring to marry Nappinnai, Gopāla Kṛṣṇa, the pride of cowherd clan, broke the necks, the humps, and the horns of the seven demoniac bulls; I realised that He is the nemesis for our sinful reactions and surrendered to Him; earlier, since I was not aware of His qualities, I didn’t get His mercy.”

2244 ēṛēḻum * venṛu aḍartta endai * eri uruvattu 

 ēṛēṛi * paṭṭa viḍu sābam ** - pāṛēṛi 

 uṇḍa talai vāy niṛaiyak * kōṭṭaṅgai oṇ kurudi * 

 kaḍa poruḷ sollin kadai            63 

“Our Lord Kaṇṇan who tamed the seven demoniac bulls, cut His chest with His lotus hand and filled the skull (of Brahmā), on which the vultures stood to eat the flesh of the body, with His blood to relieve the non-redeemable curse of Rudra, who has a fiery form and rides a bull, upon which the skull fell from his (Rudra’s) palm; if this pastime has to be narrated, it would be very long story like the Mahābhārata.”       

2245 kadaiyum perum poruḷum kaṇṇā! * nin pērē 

 idayam * irundavaiyē ēttil ** - kadaiyum 

 tirumoḻiyāy ninṛa * tirumālē! * unnaip

“O Kaṇṇā! If one worships You fully understanding the essence of the Purāṇas and the Itihāsas, he chants Your holy names; o Lord who is the personification of the Purāṇas and the Itihāsas! Please grant me to chant Your holy names and praise You with exalted words.”      

2246 paṇindēn tirumēni * paiṅgkamalam kaiyāl * 

 aṇindēn un sēvaḍi mēl anbāy ** - tuṇindēn 

 purindētti * unnaip puhaliḍam pārttu * āṅgē

“I worship Your transcendental form and offer lovely lotus flowers with love to Your lotus feet; I eulogise You and pray to grant me shelter and fulfill my desire that I may live in Vaikuṇṭha and worship You.”

 idu kaṇḍāy ellām nām utṛṛadu ** - idu kaṇḍāy

“O my good heart! Know the misery of birth and death; know the hardships of earthly life; knowing these, chant the holy names of Nārāyaṇa and pray that you don’t take birth again; if you can know all these by yourself (instead of me explaining), it is good for you.”

 kaṇḍēn * kanalum suḍarāḻi ** - kaṇḍēn

“I saw (in trance) the transcendental form of the Lord and He was wielding the fiery, effulgent disc in His hand; I could see that the all-powerful Lord not only eliminated my papa and puṇya, the cause of material miseries, but also the past sinful reactions.”

“The Lord who churned the Milk Ocean with Mandara Mountain as the rod and serpent Vāsuki as the rope to (empower the demigods to) eliminate the powerful asuras with sword-like feline teeth and wielding mighty swords is the Lord who broke the tusk of the demoniac elephant (and killed it).”

2250 kōvāhi * mānilam kāttu * naṅgaṇ mugappē 

 māvēhic celhinṛa mannavarum ** - pū mēvum

seṅgkamala nābiyān * sēvaḍikkē ēḻ piṛappum *

“The emperors and kings who rule this vast earth and roam around on horses are devotees and, in many births, they have offered lovely lotus flowers to the lotus feet of the Lord from whose navel the red lotus flower has sprouted.”

“Tanjai Māmaṇikkōil, the heart of the devotees, Śrīraṅgam, the main temple, Tiruttaṇkāl, elegant Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills, and the Milk Ocean, meditated upon by the devotees, Tirukkaḍalmallai, and Tirukkōvalūr in the heart of the devotees, and Tirukkuḍandai with ramparts are the abodes of the Lord who is the nemesis of the enemies.”   

2252 iḍaṅgai valampuri ninṛu ārppa * erikānṛu

“When the Lord who reclines on the many fire-spitting hooded Ananta Śeṣa, lifted His lotus foot to measure the planetary systems, the conch on His left hand gave a clarion call, and the fire-spitting disc subdued enemies like Namuci.”  

2253 pōdaṛindu vānaraṅgaḷ * pūñjunai pukku * āṅgalarnda 

 pōdarindu koṇḍu ēttum pōdu ** uḷḷam! - pōdu 

 maṇi vēṅgaḍavan * malar aḍikkē sella *

“On the elegant Veṅkaṭa Hills, the monkeys wake up early in the morning, bathe in the lakes filled with flowers, and worship the lord; o my heart! Come, let us also chant the holy names of the Lord on Veṅkaṭa Hills, and offer fresh flowers to His lotus feet.”   

2254 āynduraippan āyiram pēr * ādinaḍu vandivāy * 

 vāynda malar tūvi vaigalum ** - ēynda 

 piṛaik kōṭṭuc * ceṅgaṇ kari viḍutta pemmān *

“Having surrendered to Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, the Supreme Lord, who released the elephant king with curved tusk and reddish eyes from the mouth of the crocodile, I will meditate on the Lord’s thousand names, collect fresh flowers, and offer to His lotus feet in the morning, noon, and evening.”  

2255 yānē tavam seydēn * ēḻ piṛappum eppoḻudum * 

 yānē tavam uḍaiyēn emperumān! ** - yānē 

 irundatamiḻ nanmālai * iṇai aḍikkē sonnēn *

“O Supreme Lord! I (think I) have undergone austerities in all my births and despite all material miseries and I have been granted the benefit of my austerities; (that is why) this servant is devoted to You, and (I) being an expert in Tamiḻ, offer excellent garlands of choice words to Your lotus feet.”

 irukaṇ iḷamūṅgil vāṅgi ** - aruhirunda 

 tēn kalandu nīṭṭum * tiruveṅkaṭam kaṇḍīr *

“Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills, where the male elephant in musth stands before its mate offering tender bamboo shoots soaked in honey (from the bee hives), is the abode of the rain cloud-hued Lord.”  

2257 varaic candanak kuḻambum * vānkalanum paṭṭum * 

 viraip polinda veṇmalligaiyum - niraittuk koṇḍu ** 

 ādikkaṇ ninṛa * aṛivan aḍi iṇaiyē * 

 ōdip paṇivaduṛum                    76 

“It is good devotional service to offer the best sandal paste (Sandalwood produced in Malaya is very popular. That province is situated on the western ghāṭa, and the hill Nīlagiri is sometimes known as Malaya Hill), special ornaments, silk garments, and fragrant jasmine flowers, glorify the lotus feet, and bow down to the cause of all causes, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.”    

2258 uṛuṅgaṇḍāy nanneñjē! * uttaman naṛpādam *

“O my good heart! Realise that the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is our ultimate shelter; we should worship those feet with lovely lotus flowers; we should praise Him and bow down to Him and always chant His thousand names.”

The glory of that noble act can be matched only by that of His incredible deed of measuring the vast planetary systems.”

 jñālattāḷ * pinnum nalam purindadu en kolō? *

“Mother Lakṣmī, who is most beautiful, effulgent long-eyed, born on a wonderful lotus flower, attracted by the Lord’s divine form, never leaves Him at all; still, why is mother Bhū-devī also vying for the Lord? Of course, the Lord’s beautiful form is not at fault.”        

2264 kuṛaiyāha veñjoṛkaḷ * kūṛinēn kūṛi * 

 maṛaiyāṅgu ena uraitta mālai ** - iṛaiyēnum 

 īyuṅgol! enṛē * irundēn enaippagalum *

“(Because of my ignorance) I did not realise the meaning of the Vedas which indirectly indicate the Lord; I compiled songs filled with impersonal words instead of glorifying His auspicious form and qualities; still, I have been waiting for a long time expecting benefits from Him.”

“The lotus feet of the beautiful Lord who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva and tore off the body of Hiraṇyakaśipu who did not bow down to Him, emboldened by the boons he obtained (from Brahmā) and his bodily strength are the ambrosia in this vast earth (full of miseries).”

2266 amudhu enṛum tēn enṛum * āḻiyān enṛum * 

 amudhu anṛu koṇḍu uhandān enṛum ** - amudanna

“I glorify the divine Lord—who is hailed as ambrosia, honey, one who wields the disc, and who churned the milk ocean and was pleased to obtain ambrosia—with these ambrosia-like words and always worship Him.”

Will the Lord who is not visible to the jñānīs and the yogīs who undergo austerities and who is cloud-hued and blue sapphire gemstone-hued be visible to me if I perform austerities? (He will be visible only to those surrendered to Him and out of His causeless mercy).    

2268 inṛā aṛihinṛēn allēn * irunilattaic 

 cenṛu āṅgu aḷanda tiruvaḍiyai ** - anṛu 

 karukkōṭṭiyuḷ kiḍandu * kai toḻudēn kaṇḍēn * 

 tirukkōṭṭi endai tiṛam             87 

“Is it that now only I know the Lord in Tirukkōṭṭiyūr who measured this vast earth with His lotus foot? When I was in the womb, I was fortunate to see the divine form and qualities of the Lord and worship Him.   

2269 tiṛambitṛṛu ini aṛindēn * tennaraṅgattu endai * 

tiṛambā vaḻi senṛārkku allāl ** - tiṛambāc

 ceḍi naragai nīkkit * tām selvadan mun * vānōr

 kaḍi nagara vāsal kadavu               88 

“The Lord of Śrīraṅgam, my father, clears the path of hellish thickets and opens the portal doors of Vaikuṇṭha for those who follow the path of worship. For others, he closes the doors. I understand this now.” 

2270 kadavik kadañciṛanda * kañjanai mun kāyndu * 

 adavip pōr yānai osittu ** - padaviyāyp 

 pāṇiyāl nīr ētṛṛup * paṇḍorukāl māvaliyai * 

 māṇiyāyk koṇḍilaiyē maṇ?            89 

“Didn’t You once break the tusk and kill the demoniac elephant and also kill the arrogant Kaṁsa, and earlier take the form of a dwarf brāhmaṇa to beg from Bali by accepting water in Your palm and get back the earth?”    

2271 maṇṇulagam āḷēnē? * vānavarkkum vānavanāy * 

 viṇṇulagam tannahattu mēvēnē? ** - naṇṇit 

 tirumālaic * ceṅgaṇ neḍiyānai * eṅgaḷ 

 perumānaik kai toḻuda pin            90 

“After I surrendered to and started worshipping the Supreme Lord who is the consort of mother Lakṣmī and has lotus-like eyes, (though I am not interested) aren’t the earthly comforts available to me? Will I not attain Vaikuṇṭha and enjoy transcendental bliss?”    

2272 pinnāl arunaragam * sērāmal pēduṛuvīr * 

 munnāl vaṇaṅga muyanminō ** - palnūl 

 aḷandānaik * kārkkaḍal sūḻ jñālattai * ellām 

 aḷandān avan sēvaḍi                91 

“O ignorant men! If you don’t want to attain the terrible hell after death, now itself try to worship the lotus feet of the Lord who is estimated as the Supreme Lord by all the scriptures and who measured the earth surrounded by the dark ocean.” 

2273 aḍiyāl mun kañjanaic cetṛṛu * amarar ēttum 

 paḍiyān * koḍi mēl puḷ koṇḍān ** - neḍiyān tan

 nāmamē * ēttumiṅgaḷ ēttināl * tām vēṇḍum 

 kāmamē kāṭṭum kaḍidu                   92 

“If you worship chanting the holy names of the Lord who is glorified by the demigods for kicking and killing Kaṁsa and who has Garuḍa on His flag, all your desires will be fulfilled soon.”   

2274 kaḍidu koḍunaraham * piṛkālum seyhai * 

 koḍidenṛu adu kūḍā munnam ** - vaḍisaṅgam 

 koṇḍānaik * kūndalvāy kīṇḍānai * koṅgai nañju 

 uṇḍānai ēttuminō utṛṛu                  93 

“Understanding that hell is a very terrible place and the torture meted out by the Yamadūtas will be unbearable, one should avoid going to hell by fixing one’s mind on the worship of the Lord who wields a conch that sounds very loud, who split the mouth of the horse demon, and who sucked the poison-laced breast.” 

2275 utṛṛu vaṇaṅgit toḻumin * ulagēḻum

 mutṛṛum viḻuṅgum muhilvaṇṇan ** - patṛṛip 

 porundādān mārbu iḍandu * pūmpāḍahattuḷ 

 irundānai * ēttum en neñju          94 

“My heart glorifies the Lord who swallowed the seven planetary systems (to save from pralaya); who is rain cloud-hued; who split the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu who harassed Prahlāda; and who is in a sitting posture in the elegant Tiruppāḍaham; all should engage in His worship.”[1]   

2276 en neñjam mēyān * en senniyān * dānavanai 

 vanneñjam kīṇḍa maṇivaṇṇan ** - munnam sēy 

 ūḻiyān * ūḻi peyarttān * ulagēttum 

 āḻiyān attiyūrān                   95 

“The Lord of Hastigiri who tore off the strong chest of the demon Hiraṇyakaśipu; who is blue sapphire gemstone-hued; who is eternal; who created time and all other material objects; who is praised by all in the world; and, who is reclining in the Ocean of Milk; He is fixed in my heart and is seated on my head.”[2]

2277 * attiyūrān puḷḷai ūrvān * aṇimaṇiyin

 tutti sēr * nāgattin mēl tuyilvān ** - muttī

maṛaiyāvān * mākaḍal nañjuṇḍān tanakkum * 

iṛaiyāvān eṅgaḷ pirān               96 

“The Lord who rides Garuḍa; who reclines on Ananta Śeṣa who has gem-studded multi-hoods; who is worshipped by three fires; who is the Vedas; and, who is the Lord of Rudra who drank the poison that appeared from the Ocean of Milk (while churning) is present in Hastigiri.”[3] 

2278 eṅgaḷ perumān! * imaiyōr talaimagan! nī * 

 seṅgaṇ neḍumāl! tirumārbā! ** - poṅgu 

 paḍamūkkin āyiravāyp * pāmbaai mēl sērndāy * 

 kuḍamūkkuk kōyilāk koṇḍu                97 

“O Supreme Lord with reddish eyes! O Lord whose chest is the abode of mother Lakṣmī! You are the Lord of nitya-muktas; O our Lord! You recline on the thousand-hooded Ananta Śeṣa and reside in Kumbakoṇam.”  

2279 koṇḍu vaḷarkkak * kuḻaviyāyt tān vaḷarndadu * 

 uṇḍadu ulagēḻum uḷḷoḍuṅga ** - koṇḍu 

 kuḍamāḍik * kōvalanāy mēvi * en neñjam 

 iḍamāhak koṇḍa iṛai                    98 

“You swallowed the seven planetary systems and kept them inside Your stomach as a small baby when (actually) You should have been cradled in the arms and protected! As a cowherd boy, You danced with the pots; (now) You have chosen my heart as Your eternal residence!”     

2280 * iṛai emperumān! aruḷ enṛu * imaiyōr 

 muṛai ninṛu * moymmalarhaḷ tūva ** - aṛaikaḻala

 sēvaḍiyān * seṅgaṇ neḍiyān * kuṛaḷ uruvāy 

 māvaḍivil maṇ koṇḍān māl            99 

“The consort of mother Lakṣmī who is worshipped and prayed for showing mercy by the demigods who showered fresh flowers; whose lotus feet are adorned with resounding anklets; whose lotus eyes are reddish; and, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead appeared as Vāmana but measured the earth as Trivikrama and reclaimed it.”   

2281 * mālē! neḍiyōnē! kaṇṇanē! * viṇṇavarkku 

 mēlā! * viyantuḻāyk kaṇṇiyanē! ** - mēlāl 

 viḷavin kāy * kanṛināl vīḻttavanē! * endan 

 aḷavanṛāl yānuḍaiya anbu            100 

“O benevolent Lord! O Supreme Personality of Godhead! O Kaṇṇā! O Lord of nitya-muktas! One who is decorated with a lovely garland of tulasī leaves! Once You threw a demon calf and felled many woodapple fruits! My love for You is unlimited.”
