 naṛavār poḻil sūḻ * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambi! *

 piṛavāmai enaip paṇi * endai pirānē!     

“O Lord eternally residing in Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by honey-rich groves! Like the calf keeps calling for its mother cow, which cannot secrete milk, I have always called You; my father! Please relieve me from the cycle of birth and death.”

 

1549 vaṭṛā mudunīroḍu * māl varai ēḻum *

 tuṭṛāha mun tuṭṛiya * tol pugaḻōnē! **

 aṭṛēn aḍiyēn * unnaiyē aḻaikkinṛēn *

 peṭṛēn aruḷ tandiḍu * en endai pirānē!          

“O eternally glorious who swallowed the seven oceans, seven mountains! I, Your eternal servant, keep calling You; I am fortunate to remember and call You; my father! Please be merciful to me.”

 

1550 tārēn piṛarkku * un aruḷ enniḍai vaittāy *

 ārēn aduvē * paruhik kaḷikkinṛēn **

 kārēy kaḍalē malaiyē * tirukkōṭṭi

 yūrē * ugandāyai * ugandu aḍiyēnē        

“O Lord who loves to reside in the Ocean of Milk, Veṅkaṭa Hills, and Tirukkōṭṭiyūr! You have showered Your mercy on me and I will not share it with anyone else; reveling in Your mercy I am not satiated at all; I keep drinking Your mercy in bliss.”

 

1551 puḷ vāy piḷanda * punidā! enṛu aḻaikka *

 uḷḷē ninṛu * en uḷḷam kuḷirum oruvā! **

 kaḷvā! * kaḍal mallaik kiḍanda karumbē! *

vaḷḷāl! unnai * eṅṅanam nān maṛakkēnē?           

“The moment I call You, ‘O pure Lord who bifurcated the mouth of Bakāsura!’ You, O Absolute truth come into me and fill me with bliss! O my secret benefactor! O one sweet like sugarcane reclining in Kadalmallai! O merciful! How can I ever forget You?” 

 

1552 villēr nudal * vēl neḍuṅgaṇṇiyum nīyum *

 kallār kaḍuṅgkānam * tirinda kaḷiṛē! **

 nallāy! naranāraṇanē! * eṅgaḷ nambi! *

 sollāy unnai * yān vaṇaṅgit toḻumāṛē            

“Like an elephant in musth, You roamed around in the rugged forest with mother Sītā whose forehead is arched like a bow and wide eyes are like a spear! O incredible Lord! One who appeared as Nara-Nārāyaṇa! Our Lord! Please reveal to me how to worship Your lotus feet properly.”

 

1553 paṇiyēy paraṅgunṛin * pavaḷat tiraḷē! *

 muniyē! * tirumūḻikkaḷattu viḷakkē! **

 iniyāya tonḍarōm * parugu innamudāya

 kaniyē! * unnaik kaṇḍu konḍu * uyndoḻindēnē          

“O Lord, beautiful like the bright coral, residing in Tiruppiridi on the snow-clad peak of the Himālayas! One who always contemplates (liberating the jīvas)! One who illuminates Tirumūḻikkaḷam![1] O enjoyer! O ambrosia drunk by the devotees! O fruit! I worshipped You and attained liberation.”

 

1554 gadiyēl illai * nin aruḷ alladu enakku *

 nidiyē! * tirunīrmalai nittilattottē! **

 padiyē! paravit toḻum * toṇḍar tamakkuk

 gadiyē! * unaik kaṇḍu koṇḍu * uyndoḻindēnē         

“O my wealth! O valuable pearl necklace like Lord in Tirunīrmalai! I don’t have any shelter other than Your mercy; o the ultimate shelter of devotees who glorify and worship Your sacred abodes! I realized You and attained liberation.”    

 

1555 attā! ariyē! enṛu * unnai aḻaikka *

 pittā enṛu pēsuginṛār * piṛar ennai **

 muttē! maṇimāṇikkamē! * muḷaikkinṛa

 vittē! * unnai eṅṅanam * nān viḍuhēnē?      

“When I call You, ‘My Lord!’ ‘O nemesis of my enemies!’ others call me ‘O mad fellow!’ O pearl! O ruby gemstone! O beneficial seedling! How can I let You go?”

 

1556 tūyāy! suḍar māmadi pōl * uyirkkellām *

 tāyāy aḷikkinṛa * taṇtāmaraik kaṇṇā! **

 āyā! alainīr ulagēḻum * mun uṇḍa

 vāyā! * unnai eṅṅanam * nān maṛakkēnē?     

“O immaculate! O cool lotus-eyed Lord! You are merciful like a mother and like the luminant moon to all animals! O Gopāla! O one who swallowed all the seven planetary systems and the oceans! How can I forget You!”

 

1557 * vaṇḍār poḻil sūḻ * naṛaiyūr nambikku * enṛum

 toṇḍāyk * kaliyan oli sey tamiḻ mālai **

 tonḍīr! ivai pāḍumin * pāḍi ninṛāḍa *

 unḍē visumbu * untamakku illai tuyarē

“O devotees, please recite this garland of ten songs rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the eternal servant of the Lord of Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by groves swarmed by bumblebees; if you sing and dance, you will be relieved of your material miseries and attain Vaikuṇṭha.”

“O Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr! When I say, ‘O thief, You have entered me as Haṁsa and Varāha incarnations and occupied my heart!’ my eyes burst into tears; alas, if I start meditating on You, my heart melts! I will not desire anyone else.”

māḍē vandu * aḍiyēn manam koḷḷa valla maindā! **

 pāḍēn toṇḍar tammaik * kavidaip panuval koṇḍu *

“O Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr! O mighty Lord who appeared as the ever unseen and unheard of Nṛsiṁhadeva incarnation, You came to me and occupied my heart! I will not praise evil persons; I will glorify You alone by songs with perfect grammar.”

 

1560 emmānum emmanaiyum * enaip peṭṛu oḻindadaṛ pin *

 ammānum ammanaiyum * aḍiyēnukkāhi ninṛa **

 nanmāna oṇsuḍarē! * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambī! * un

 maimmāna vaṇṇam allāl * magiḻndu ētta māṭṭēnē        

“O Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr! O glorious luminant light, when my father and mother left after giving birth to me, You became the father and mother for this servant! I will not worship any form other than Your dark-hued form.”

 

1561 siṛiyāy ōr piḷḷaiyumāy * ulaguṇḍu ōr ālilai mēl

 uṛaivāy! * en neñjin uḷḷē uṛaivāy * uṛaindadu tān **

 aṛiyādirundu aṛiyēn * aḍiyēn aṇivaṇḍu kiṇḍum *

 naṛaivārum poḻil sūḻ * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambīyō!        

“O Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by honey-rich groves swarmed by bumblebees! You swallowed all the planetary systems and reclined on a banyan leaf in the form of a baby! O one who resides in my heart! I am very much aware of Your residing in my heart.”

 

1562 nīṇḍāyai vānavarhaḷ * ninaindu ēttik kāṇbaridāl *

 āṇḍāy enṛu ādarikkappaḍuvāykku * nān aḍimai

 pūṇḍēn ** en neñjin uḷḷē * puhundāyaip pōgaloṭṭēn *

 nāṇ tān unakku oḻindēn * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambīyō!         

“O Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr! It is not possible for the demigods like Brahmā to see Your incredible Trivikrama form by meditation and glorification. The demigods take shelter of You by calling, ‘My Lord!’ I became Your servant; I don’t feel any shyness to say, ‘I will not allow you to go to somebody else from my heart.’”

 

1563 entādai tādai appāl * eḻuvar paḻavaḍimai

 vandār * en neñjin uḷḷē * vandāyaip pōgaloṭṭēn **

 andō! en āruyirē! * arasē! aruḷ enakku *

 nandāmal tanda endāy! * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambīyō!        

“O Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr! O my dear life! My master! You have been very merciful to me! I, my father, his father, and seven generations before (total ten generations) are Your eternal servants; I will not allow you to go to somebody else from my heart.”

 

1564 mannañja āyiram tōḷ * maḻuvil tuṇitta maindā! *

 en neñjattu uḷḷirundu * iṅgu inip pōyp piṛar oruvar **

 vanneñjam pukkirukka oṭṭēn * vaḷaittu vaittēn *

 nanneñjavanna mannum * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambīyō!    

“O Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr! You are the abode of Mother Lakṣmī whose elegant gait is like that of the swan and who is merciful! O mighty Lord, you cut off the thousand shoulders (of Kārtavīryārjuna) with your axe to the great fear of the kṣatriyas! I will not allow You to go to somebody else’s hard heart from my heart; I forbid You.”

 

1565 eppōdum ponmalar iṭṭu * imaiyōr toḻudu * taṅgaḷ

 kaippōdu koṇḍu iṛaiñjik * kaḻal mēl vaṇaṅga ninṛāy **

 ippōdu en neñjin uḷḷē * pugundāyaip pōgaloṭṭēn *

 naṛpōdu vaṇḍu kiṇḍum * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambīyō!         

“O Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr where bumblebees swarm the fresh flowers! Your lotus feet are eternally worshipped by the demigods by offering fresh flowers and bringing their flower-like palms together! I will not allow You to go to somebody else from my heart.”   

 

1566 ūnēr ākkai tannai * uḻandōmbi vaittamaiyāl *

 yānāy en tanakkāy * aḍiyēn manam puhunda

 tēnē! ** tīṅgkarumbin teḷivē! * en sindai tannāl *

 nānē eydap peṭṛēn * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambīyō!          

“O Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr! You are my Supersoul, my protector; o one sweet like honey, You have occupied my heart! One sweet like sugarcane juice! I have been taking care of my material body with a lot of effort; now, because of my proper consciousness, I became Your servant (serving with that body).”    

 

1567 * nannīr vayal puḍai sūḻ * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambiyai *

 kannīra māl varait tōḷ * kalikanṛi maṅgaiyar kōn **

 sonnīra sol mālai * solluvārhaḷ sūḻ visumbil *

 nannīrmaiyāl magiḻndu * neḍuṅgkālam vāḻvārē

“Those who learn and recite this garland of ten songs rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who has mountain-like shoulders, is the chief of those living in Tirumaṅgai, and who always eulogises the Lord eternally residing in Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by well-irrigated fields, will engage in service in Vaikuṇṭha and live there eternally in bliss.”

1568 * sinavil seṅgaṇ arakkar uyir māḷac ceṭṛa villi enṛu kaṭṛavar tandam manamuḷ

koṇḍu * enṛum eppōdum ninṛēttum māmuniyai * maram ēḻ eyda maindanai **

 nanavil senṛārkkum naṇṇaṛkariyānai * nān aḍiyēn naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambiyai *

 kanavil kaṇḍēn inṛu kaṇḍamaiyāl * en  kaṇṇiṇaihaḷ kaḷippak kaḷittēnē    

“When I saw in my heart today the Lord in standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr—who is meditated upon by the scholars in their heart as the Lord who possesses the deadly bow which annihilated the red-eyed and evil asuras; who can be worshipped at any time and in any situation; who is always thinking what more is to be done for the devotees; who is very powerful to have pierced the seven sal trees with a single arrow; and, who is not approachable even to the self-realized jñānīs—my eyes and I too were happy.”  

 

1569 tāy ninainda kanṛē okka * ennaiyum tannaiyē ninaikkac ceydu * tān enak

 kāy ninaindu aruḷ seyyum appanai * anṛu ivvaiyagam uṇḍu umiḻndiṭṭa

 vāyanai ** magarak kuḻaik kādanai maindanai * madiḷ kōval iḍaikaḻi

 āyanai * amararkku ariyēṭṛai * en anbanai anṛi ādariyēnē       

“I will not take shelter of anyone other than the benefactor Lord who not only made me think of only Him like the calf which thinks of its mother only but also thought of the beneficial things for me and granted them; who swallowed all the planetary systems and later brought them out; who is adorned with crocodile-shaped earrings; who is eternally youthful; who is in a standing position as Gopāla in Tirukkōvalūr; who is majestic like a lion and a bull; and who is the Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr, merciful to me.”  

 

1570 vanda nāḷ vandu en neñjiḍam koṇḍān * maṭṛōr neñjaṛiyān * aḍiyēnuḍaic

 cindaiyāy vandu tenpularkku ennaic cēr koḍān * idu sikkenap peṭṛēn **

 kondulām poḻil sūḻ kuḍandait talaik kōvinaik * kuḍamāḍiya kūttanai *

 endaiyai endai tandai tammānai * empirānai ettāl maṛakkēnē?    

“The Lord who resides in Tirukkuḍandai, surrounded by groves full of flowers, is an expert pot dancer, my father, the Lord of my father, and his father, and is the Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr; He, on His own, came and occupied my heart; He doesn’t even consider anybody else’s heart as His residence; He purified my consciousness; He granted me protection from the Yamadūtas; how can I ever forget Him?”

 

1571 uraṅgaḷāl iyanṛa mannar māḷap * bhāratattu oru tēr aivarkkāyc cenṛu *

 iraṅgi ūrndu avarkku innaruḷ seyyum empirānai * vambār punal kāviri **

 araṅgamāḷi ennāḷi viṇṇāḷi * āḻi sūḻ ilaṅgai malaṅgac cenṛu *

 saraṅgaḷ āṇḍa taṇtāmaraik kaṇṇanukku anṛi * en manam tāḻndu nillādē     

“The merciful lotus-eyed Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr orchestrated the Mahābhārata war, mercifully guided the Pāṇḍavas, became the chariot driver (of Arjuna), eliminated the arrogant kings under Duryodhana, and assured victory for the Pāṇḍavas; He is the Lord of  Śrīraṅgam temple surrounded by the sacred river Kāverī; He is my master; He is the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha; He went to Laṅkā, surrounded by the ocean, and destroyed it by shooting arrows; and, I will surrender to Him only.”

 

1572 āṅgu vennaragattu aḻundum pōdu * añjēl enṛu aḍiyēnai aṅgē vandu

 tāṅgu * tāmarai anna ponnār aḍi empirānai * umbarkku aṇiyāy ninṛa **

veṅkaṭattu ariyaip parikīṛiyai * veṇṇey uṇḍu uraliniḍai āppuṇḍa

 tīṅgkarumbinai * tēnai nanpālinai anṛi en manam sindai seyyādē      

“My heart will not meditate on anybody else other than the Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr who came and pacified me and saved me when I was suffering in very cruel hells; who has elegant feet like the lotus; who is my benefactor; who is the lion-like Lord of the Veṅkaṭa Hills, the crown jewel for the celestial world; who tore off the mouth of the horse demon (Keśī); who was tied to a mortar for having stolen and gobbled up butter; and who is very sweet like sugarcane juice, honey, and milk.”

 

1573 eṭṭanaip poḻudāhilum * enṛum en manattu agalādirukkum pugaḻ *

 taṭṭalartta ponnē alarkōṅgin * tāḻ poḻil tirumāliruñjōlai aṅg

 kaṭṭiyai ** karumbīnṛa incāṭṛaik * kādalāl maṛai nāṅum munnōdiya

 paṭṭanai * paravait tuyilēṭṛai * en paṇbanai anṛip pāḍal seyyēnē    

“I will not sing the glories of anybody else other than my merciful and glorious Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr who doesn’t leave my heart even for a second; who is present in Tirumāliruñjōlai which has groves full of Malabar ironwood trees with golden flowers bloomed like plates; who is very sweet like sugar candy and sugarcane juice; the scholar who once learned the four Vedas (from Sāndīpani Muni); and the Supreme Lord who is reclining in the Ocean of Milk.”    

 

1574 paṇṇin inmoḻi yāḻ narambil peṭṛa * pālaiyāhi iṅgē puhundu * en

 kaṇṇum neñjum vāyum iḍaṅgkoṇḍān * koṇḍa pin maṛaiyōr manam tannuḷ **

 viṇṇuḷār perumānai emmānai * vīṅgu nīr makaram tiḷaikkum kaḍal

 vaṇṇan * māmaṇi vaṇṇan em aṇṇal * vaṇṇamē anṛi vāy uraiyādē     

“My mouth will not utter the auspicious qualities of anybody else other than my Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr who, like the very sweet pālai meter played by vibrating the strings of (the musical instrument) Vīṇā, pleasantly entered my heart and took up my eyes, the heart, and the mouth as His residence; then, He took up the hearts of the Vedic scholars as His residence; who is my master; and who is ocean-hued and blue gemstone-hued.”

 

1575 ini eppāvam vandeydum? sollīr * emakku immaiyē aruḷ peṭṛamaiyāl * aḍum

 tuniyait tīrttu inbamē taruhinṛadōr * tōṭṛat tonneṛiyai ** vaiyam toḻappaḍum

 muniyai vānavarāl vaṇaṅgkappaḍum muttinaip * pattar tām nugarhinṛadōr

 kaniyai * kādal seydu en uḷḷam koṇḍa kaḷvanai * inṛu kaṇḍu koṇḍēnē      

“I realised today the loving thief Lord who stole my heart. Since I attained the Lord’s grace in this birth, can any sin afflict me anymore? He is the most auspicious tool who removes the miserable sinful reactions; He is accepted as the ultimate shelter by all the people; He is like a valuable pearl worshipped by the demigods; and is a fruit coveted by the devotees.” 

 

1576 en seyhēn aḍiyēn? uraiyīr * idaṛku enṛum en manattē irukkum pugaḻ *

 tañjaiyāḷiyaip ponpeyarōn * neñjam anṛu iḍandavanait taḻalē purai **

 minsey vāḷarakkan nagar pāḻ paḍac * cūḻkaḍal siṛai vaittu imaiyōr toḻum *

 ponsey māl varaiyai maṇik kunṛinai anṛi * en manam pōṭṛiyennādē     

“Can my heart glorify anybody else other than the blue gemstone-hued mountain-like Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr? How can this servant (I) repay His debt? He stays eternally in my heart with love; He is the Lord of Tanjai Māmaṇik Koil; He appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva and tore off the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu; He built a bridge across the ocean and crossed over to Laṅkā, the country of the arrogant Rāvaṇa who possessed a terrible sword, and annihilated it; and He is like a mountain worshipped and taken shelter of by the demigods.”

 

1577 * tōḍu viṇḍalar pūmpoḻil maṅgaiyar tōnṛal * vāḷkaliyan tiruvāli

 nāḍan * nannaṛaiyūr ninṛa nambi tan ** nalla māmalar sēvaḍi senniyil

 sūḍiyum toḻudum eḻundāḍiyum * toṇḍargaṭku avan sonna sol mālai *

 pāḍal pattivai pāḍumin toṇḍīr! * pāḍa nummiḍaip pāvam nillāvē    

“O devotees! Please recite this garland of ten songs rendered for your liberation by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār—who is the chief of those living in Tirumaṅgai which has groves full of well-bloomed large flowers; who is the chief of Tiruvāli and wielder of a sword; who keeps the lotus feet of the Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr on his head, worships Him, and dances in ecstasy—if you recite, you will not be afflicted by sins.”

1578 * kaṇ sōra veṅgkurudi vandiḻiya * ventaḻal pōl kūndalāḷai *

 maṇ sēra mulai uṇḍa māmadalāy! * vānavar tam kōvē! enṛu **

 viṇ sērum iḷantiṅgkaḷ agaḍuriñju * maṇi māḍa malhu * selvat

 taṇ sēṛai emperumān tāḷ toḻuvār kāṇmin * en talai mēlārē     

“Only those who worship the lotus feet of Sāranātha Perumāḷ in Tiruccēṛai, which is very opulent, cool, and full of palatial tall houses touching the moon, are my masters. They eulogise the Lord, ‘O Supreme Personality of Godhead! O child! You sucked the poison-laced nipple of the demon Pūtanā, who had reddish hair like fire, and killed her, her eyes rolling and blinking, and blood pouring out.”  

 

1579 ampuruva vari neḍuṅgaṇ * alar magaḷai varai agalattamarndu * mallal

 komburuva viḷaṅgani mēl * iḷaṅganṛu koṇḍeṛinda kūttar pōlām **

 vambalarum taṇ sōlai vaṇ sēṛai * vān undu kōyil mēya *

 emperumān tāḷ toḻuvār * eppoḻudum en manattē irukkinṛārē      

“Those who worship the lotus feet of Sāranātha Perumāḷ, eternally residing in the temple rising high touching the sky, in Tiruccēṛai, which is full of fragrant groves, always reside in my heart. The Lord possesses mother Lakṣmī, who has long eyes with red and black streaks and elegant eyebrows, on His mountain-like chest; He threw (and killed) the demon calf (Vatsāsura) on the tall wood apple tree, and He has an elegant gait.” 

 

1580 mīdōḍi vāḷ eyiṛu minnilaga * mun vilahum uruvināḷai *

 kādōḍu koḍi mūkku anṛu uḍan aṛutta * kaittalattā! enṛu ninṛu **

 tādōḍu vaṇḍalambum * taṇ sēṛai emperumān tāḷai ētti *

 pōdōḍu punal tūvum puṇṇiyarē * viṇṇavaril polihinṛārē      

“Those fortunate devotees who offer flower and sacred water and worship the lotus feet of  Sāranātha Perumāḷ—residing in cool Tiruccēṛai, where humming bumblebees swarm the flowers, praising Him, ‘O Lord who cut off the ear and the nose of Śūrpaṇakhā who was huge and possessed luminant feline teeth projecting out!’—are glorious than the eternally liberated souls.”      

1581 tērāḷum vāḷ arakkan * ten ilaṅgai veñjamattup ponṛi vīḻa *

 pōrāḷum silai adanāl * poru kaṇaigaḷ pōkkuvittāy enṛu ** nāḷum

 tārāḷum varai mārban * taṇ sēṛai emperumān umbar āḷum *

 pērāḷan pērōdum periyōrai * oru kālum pirihilēnē       

“I will never leave the association of the pure devotees who chant daily the holy names of Sāranātha Perumāḷ in Tiruccēṛai who has a mountain-like chest adorned with a garland, is the Lord of the spiritual planets, and is very glorious and worship Him saying, ‘O Lord who shot arrows with the victorious bow and destroyed the beautiful city of Laṅkā of Rāvaṇa who was an expert charioteer and possessed a deadly sword!”   

 

1582 vandikkum maṭṛavarkkum * māsuḍambil  vallamaṇar tamakkum allēn *

 mundic cenṛu ari uruvāy iraṇiyanai *  muraṇ aḻitta mudalvarkkallāl **

 sandappū malarc cōlait * taṇ sēṛai  emperumān tāḷai * nāḷum

 sindippārkku en uḷḷam * tēnūṛi  eppoḻudum tittikkumē       

“I am surrendered to the Lord, the cause of all causes, who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva and destroyed the powerful Hiraṇyakaśipu, and I ignore the atheists -  the Jains who are not clean and enter into an unwarranted argument and the Buddhists who roam around chanting, ‘Vande.’ My heart feels ecstatic and sweet like nectar in the association of the devotees who daily worship the lotus feet of Sāranātha Perumāḷ in the cool Tiruccēṛai which has many groves with sandalwood trees.”  

 

1583 paṇḍu ēnamāy ulagai anṛu iḍanda * paṇbāḷā enṛu ninṛu *

 toṇḍānēn tiruvaḍiyē tuṇai allāl * tuṇaiyilēn solluhinṛēn **

“Glorifying You saying, ‘O noble Lord, in the form of a boar You lifted up the earth on Your tusk!’ I became a servant of Your lotus feet; I declare that I do not have any shelter other than Your lotus feet; look at how my eyes and heart rejoice to behold the devotees of Sāranātha Perumāḷ in the beautiful Tiruccēṛai which has many groves with flowers swarmed by the bumblebees.”  

 

 

1584 paiviriyum variyaravil * paḍukaḍaluḷ tuyilamarnda paṇbā! enṛum *

 maiviriyum maṇi varai pōl * māyavanē! enṛenṛum vaṇḍār nīlam **

 seyviriyum taṇ sēṛai emperumān * tiruvaḍiyaic cindittēṛku * en

“My love is for the surrendered devotees of Sāranātha Perumāḷ in the cool Tiruccēṛai—where in the fertile fields the bumblebees swarm the dark blue waterlilies—whose lotus feet are meditated upon by me and who has taken full control of my five senses; who is glorified again and again saying, ‘O noble Lord reclining in the Ocean of Milk on Śeṣa Nāga who has hoods vastly spread!’ ‘O incredible Lord who has a mountain-like dark blue gemstone-hued body.”     

 

1585 uṇṇādu veṅgkūṭṛam * ōvāda pāvaṅgaḷ sērā * mēlai

 viṇṇōrum maṇṇōrum vandiṛaiñjum * mentaḷir pōl aḍiyinānai **

 paṇṇāra vaṇḍu iyambum * paimpoḻil sūḻ taṇ sēṛai ammān tannai *

 kaṇṇārak kaṇḍuruhik * kaiyārat toḻuvāraik karuduṅgālē     

“If one meditates upon the devotees who lovingly look at and fervently worship with hearts melting the Sāranātha Perumāḷ—in the cool Tiruccēṛai which is surrounded by groves swarmed by bumblebees humming in popular meters—who is worshipped by the demigods and the people on the earth and whose lotus feet are tender like the soft sprouts, that person will not be disturbed by the cruel Yama and eternal sinful reactions.”   

 

1586 kaḷḷattēn poyyagattēn ādalāl * pōdorukāl kavalai ennum *

veḷḷattēṛku en kolō? * viḷai vayaluḷ karu nīlam kaḷaiñar tāḷāl

 taḷḷa ** tēn maṇa nāṛum * taṇ sēṛai emperumān tāḷai * nāḷum

 uḷḷattē vaippārukku idu kāṇīr * en uḷḷam uruhumāṛē     

“Look at my heart melting with love for the devotees who always keep in their heart and meditate on the lotus feet of Sāranātha Perumāḷ in Tiruccēṛai which is fragrant because of the honey pouring out from the dark blue waterlilies, grown in the fertile paddy fields, when they are pushed aside with their legs by the farmers engaged in removing the weeds. I am a false and wicked person who is always in miserable material woes; how did I become so fortunate (to be associated with the devotees)?”   

 

1587 * pūmāṇ sēr karuṅguḻalār pōl naḍandu * vayal ninṛa peḍaiyōḍu * annam

 tēmāvin inniḻalil kaṇ tuyilum * taṇ sēṛai ammān tannai **

 vāmān tērp parakālan * kali kanṛi oli mālai koṇḍu toṇḍīr! *

 tūmāṇ sēr ponnaḍi mēl sūṭṭumin * num tuṇaik kaiyāl toḻudu ninṛē

“O devotees! Please recite and offer this garland of ten songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, who possesses a chariot drawn by mighty horses, about Sāranātha Perumāḷ who is reclining under the cool shade of a sweet mango tree in the grove in Tiruccēṛai where in the fertile fields the male swans, accompanied by the female swans, walk like damsels with black hair decorated with fragrant flowers—at the lotus feet of the Lord and join Your palms together in worship.”

1588 * tandai kālil peruvilaṅgu * tāḷ aviḻa * naḷḷiruṭkaṇ

 vanda endai perumānār * maruvi ninṛa ūr pōlum **

 mundi vānam maḻai poḻiya * mūvāvuruvin maṛaiyāḷar *

 andi mūnṛum anal ōmbum * aṇiyār vīdi aḻundūrē  

“The eternal abode of the Lord—who when appeared at midnight, the chain and the big lock binding the leg of His father (Vasudeva) broke and fell down—is Thiruvaḻundūr where the clouds pour rain even before the Yajña is performed; ever youthful brāhmaṇas perform fire sacrifices three times a day; and, the streets are clean and beautiful.”[1]  

 

1589 pāritteḻunda * paḍai mannar tammai māḷa * bhārathattut

 tēril pāganāy ūrnda * deva devan ūr pōlum **

 nīril paṇaitta neḍuvāḷaikku * añjip pōna kuruginaṅgaḷ *

 āral kavuḷōḍu arugaṇaiyum * aṇiyār vayal sūḻ aḻundūrē  

“The eternal abode of the Supreme Lord—who orchestrated the Mahābhāratha war, drove the chariot of Arjuna and ensured the annihilation of the arrogant enemy kings—is Thiruvaḻundūr surrounded by fertile fields where the herons fly away in fear of the large belt fish but come back a little later, keeping the already caught small zig-zag eel fish in the side of the mouth, desiring to catch more.”     

 

1590 sempon madiḷ sūḻ tennilaṅgaikku iṛaivan * siraṅgaḷ aiyiraṇḍum *

 umbar vāḷikku ilakkāha * udirtta uravōn ūr pōlum **

 kombil ārnda mādavi mēl * kōdi mēynda vaṇḍinaṅgaḷ *

 ambarāvum kaṇmaḍavār * aimpālaṇaiyum aḻundūrē   

“The eternal abode of the majestic Lord—who shot a brahmāstra to cut off the ten heads of Rāvaṇa, the king of Laṅkā which is surrounded by ramparts covered by gold plates—is Thiruvaḻundūr where the swarm of bumblebees, after having drank the honey from the sprouts of hiptage trees, land on the fragrant hair of the damsels with arrow-like eyes.”  

 

1591 veḷḷattuḷ ōr ālilai mēl * mēvi aḍiyēn manam puhundu * en

 uḷḷattuḷḷum kaṇṇuḷḷum * ninṛār ninṛa ūr pōlum **

 puḷḷup piḷḷaikku irai tēḍip * pōna kādal peḍaiyōḍum *

 aḷḷal seṛuvil kayal nāḍum * aṇiyār vayal sūḻ aḻundūrē  

“The eternal abode of the majestic Lord—who floated as a baby on a banyan leaf on the pralaya floods, entered my heart and is permanently residing in my heart and eyes—is Thiruvaḻundūr where the bird couples search for fish in the muddy fertile fields for their loving children.”   

                                                         

1592 pagalum iravum tānēyāyp * pārum viṇṇum tānēyāy *

 nigaril suḍarāy iruḷāhi * ninṛār ninṛa ūr pōlum **

 tuhilin koḍiyum tērttugaḷum * tunni mādar kūndal vāy *

 agilin puhaiyāl muhil ēykkum * aṇiyār vīdi aḻundūrē  

“The eternal abode of the majestic Lord—who is both day and night, earth and spiritual sky and the cause of the bright luminaries in the sky and also the darkness—is Thiruvaḻundūr with broad streets and where it seems that it is always the rainy season because of the fluttering flags (on the high-rise houses), the dust clouds raised by the speeding chariots, and the dense smoke from the aguru woods burnt to dry the hair of the women.” 

 

1593 ēḍilaṅgu tāmarai pōl * sevvāy muṛuval seydaruḷi *

 māḍu vandu en manam puhundu * ninṛār ninṛā ūr pōlum **

 nīḍu māḍat tanic cūlam pōḻak * koṇḍal tuḷi tūva *

 āḍalaravattu ārppu ōvā * aṇiyār vīdi aḻundūrē  

“The eternal abode of the majestic Lord—whose smiling red lips resemble the red petals of the fully bloomed lotus; He came near me and entered my heart—is Thiruvaḻundūr with broad streets and where the tridents fixed on the tall palaces pierce the clouds causing downpour; and the sounds of celebrations constantly ring”

 

1594 mālaip puhundu malaraṇai mēl vaihi * aḍiyēn manam puhundu * en

 nīlak kaṇgaḷ pani malha * ninṛār ninṛa ūr pōlum **

 vēlaik kaḍal pōl neḍu vīdi * viṇ tōy sudai veṇmaṇi māḍattu *

 ālaip pugaiyāl aḻal kadirai maṛaikkum * vīdi aḻundūrē  

In the mood of Parakāla Nāyakī: “The eternal abode of the majestic Lord—who came in the evening, lay on my bed of flowers, entered my heart, and made my blue lotus-like eyes shed tears (as He wanted to leave)—is Thiruvaḻundūr with broad streets, stretching like the ocean shore, where the white, sky-high palaces were shielded from the sun rays by the dense smoke emitted by the sugar factories.” 

 

1595 vañji maruṅguliḍai nōva * maṇandu ninṛa kanavahattu * en

 neñju niṛaiyak kai kūppi * ninṛār ninṛa ūr pōlum **

 pañji anna mellaḍi * naṛpāvaimārhaḷ * āḍagattin

 añjilambin ārppu ōvā * aṇiyār vīdi aḻundūrē   

In the mood of Parakāla Nāyakī: “The eternal abode of the majestic Lord—who united with me in the dream, making my guducci creeper-like slender hip pleasurably painful and stood accepting my fully satiated gesture with palms joined together[2]—is Thiruvaḻundūr with broad streets which ring always with the sound from the elegant golden anklets worn by the noble ladies with feet soft like cotton.”

 

1596 en aimpulanum eḻilum koṇḍu * iṅgē nerunal eḻundaruḷi *

 ponnaṅgkalaihaḷ meliveydap * pōna punidar ūr pōlum **

 mannu mudunīr aravinda malar mēl * varivaṇḍu isai pāḍa *

 annam peḍaiyōḍu uḍanāḍum * aṇiyār vayal sūḻ aḻundūrē  

In the mood of Parakāla Nāyakī: “The eternal abode of the blemishless Lord—who came to me, plundered my five senses and beauty, disheveled my elegant clothes, and left me—is Thiruvaḻundūr with broad streets where in the ever full, deep waterbodies, the lotus flowers are swarmed by striped bees humming tunes; and the swans accompanied by their mates dance (to the tunes).” 

 

1597 * nellil kuvaḷai kaṇ kāṭṭa * nīril kumudam vāy kāṭṭa *

 allik kamalam mugam kāṭṭum * kaḻani aḻundūr ninṛānai **

 vallip podumbil kuyil kūvum * maṅgai vēndan parakālan *

 sollil polinda tamiḻ mālai * sollap pāvam nillāvē

“If one recites these ten Tamiḻ songs of auspicious words—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the chief of Tirumaṅgai echoing with the sweet cooing of koels in the groves of flowering creepers, about the Lord residing in Thiruvaḻundūr where the dark blue water lilies, grown among the paddy crops, are like the eyes (of the women there); the red lotus flowers, grown in the water, are like their mouths; and the lotus flowers with big petals, are their faces—will be rid of all sins.”

“I worshipped the Lord who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva and cleaved the strong chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu; who wields the conch in the right hand and the fiery disc in the left; who has charming lotus-like eyes; and who is eternally residing in Thiruvaḻundūr where brāhmaṇas, as scholarly as Brahmā born from the lotus sprouted from the Lord’s navel, reside.”

 

1599 kōvānār maḍiyak * kolaiyār maḻuk koṇḍaruḷum *

 mūvā vānavanai * muḻunīr vaṇṇanai ** aḍiyārkku

 ā!ā! enṛiraṅgit * tennaḻundaiyil manni ninṛa *

devādi devanai * yān kaṇḍu koṇḍu tiḷaittēnē       

“In ecstasy, I worshipped the Lord who wields the deadly axe which killed twenty-one generations of kṣatriyas; who is eternally youthful; who is dark ocean-hued; who is very merciful to the devotees; who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and who eternally resides in Thiruvaḻundūr.”  

 

1600 uḍaiyānai * olinīr ulagaṅgaḷ paḍaittānai *

 viḍaiyānōḍa anṛu * viṛalāḻi visaittānai **

 aḍaiyār tennilaṅgai aḻittānai * aṇiyaḻundūr

 uḍaiyānai * aḍiyēn aḍaindu uyndu pōnēnē       

“I surrendered to the Supreme Lord—who created the oceans and the planetary systems; who employed the powerful disc weapon and made Śiva run away from the battlefield; who destroyed Laṅkā and the asuras; and who resides in the beautiful Thiruvaḻundūr—and was delivered.”   

 

 

1601 kunṛāl māri taḍuttavanaik * kula vēḻam anṛu

 ponṛāmai * adanukku aruḷ seyda pōrēṭṛai **

 anṛu āvin naṛuney amarnduṇṇa * aṇiyaḻundūr

 ninṛānai * aḍiyēn kaṇḍu koṇḍu niṛaindēnē     

“I am fully satisfied with worshipping the Lord—who held the Govardhana Hills as an umbrella and protected (the cowherd community and their cows and calves) from torrential rains; who saved the king of elephants from the crocodile; who is like a charging bull; and who swallowed fragrant cow’s ghee—in the beautiful Thiruvaḻundūr.”   

 

1602 kañjanaik kāyndānaik * kaṇṇamaṅgaiyuḷ ninṛānai *

 vañjanap pēy mulaiyūḍu * uyir vāy maḍuttu uṇḍānai **

 señjol nānmaṛaiyōr * tennaḻundaiyil manni ninṛa *

 añjanak kunṛam tannai * aḍiyēn kaṇḍu koṇḍēnē         

“I worshipped the collyrium mountain-like dark-hued Lord—who killed Kaṁsa; who stands in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai; who sucked the nipple and the life air of the evil demon Pūtanā and killed her[1]—in the beautiful Thiruvaḻundūr where expert Vedic scholars reside.”   

 

1603 periyānai * amarar talaivaṛkum piramanukkum *

 uriyānai uhandān avanukkum * uṇarvadanukku

 ariyānai **  aḻundūr maṛaiyōrhaḷ * aḍipaṇiyum

 kariyānai * aḍiyēn kaṇḍu koṇḍu kaḷittēnē        

“I happily worshipped the dark blue-hued Lord—who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead; who is not understood even by Indra, Brahmā, and Śiva who roams around wearing the skin of an elephant—in the beautiful Thiruvaḻundūr where Vedic scholars worship His lotus feet.”

 

 

1604 tiruvāḻ mārvan tannait * tisai maṇ nīr eri mudalā *

 uruvāy ninṛavanai * oli sērum mārudattai **

 aruvāy ninṛavanait * tennaḻundaiyil manni ninṛa *

 karuvār kaṛpagattaik * kaṇḍu koṇḍu kaḷittēnē    

“I happily worshipped the wish-fulfilling tree-like Lord—in whose chest mother Lakṣmī resides; who has transformed into the directions, the earth, the water, and the fire; who is the Lord of Vāyu who possesses the quality of sound also; and who is invisible—in Thiruvaḻundūr.”  

 

1605 nilaiyāḷāha * ennai uhandānai * nilamagaḷ tan

 mulaiyāḷ vittahanai * mudu nānmaṛai vīdi toṛum **

 alaiyārum kaḍal pōl muḻaṅgum * tennaḻundaiyil manni ninṛa *

 kalaiyār soṛporuḷaik * kaṇḍu koṇḍu kaḷittēnē     

“I happily worshipped the Lord—who mercifully accepted me as His eternal servant; who is the amorous consort of Bhū-devī; who is the substance of the śāstras—in Thiruvaḻundūr where the chanting of the four Vedas resounds in all the streets like the thunderous sound of the stormy ocean.”

 

1606 * pērānaik * kuḍandaip perumānai * ilaṅgoḷi sēr

 vārār vanamulaiyāḷ * malar maṅgai nāyaganai **

 ārā innamudait * tennaḻundaiyil manni ninṛa *

 kārār karumuhilaik * kaṇḍu koṇḍu kaḷittēnē      

“I happily worshipped the rain clouds-hued Lord—who is reclining in Tiruppēr and in Kumbakōṇam; who is the consort of mother Lakṣmī; and who is like nectar which is never enough—in Thiruvaḻundūr.”   

 

1607 * tiṛal murugananaiyār * tennaḻundaiyil manni ninṛa *

 aṛamudalvan avanai * aṇi āliyar kōn maruvār **

 kaṛai neḍuvēl valavan * kalikanṛi sol aiyiraṇḍum *

 muṛai vaḻuvāmai vallār * muḻudāḷvar vānulagē

“Those who can recite properly these ten Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the chief of the beautiful Tiruvāli and who possesses a long spear which has the bloodstains of the enemies—about the Lord who is the Absolute Truth residing in Thiruvaḻundūr where many powerful men like the demigod Murugan (Kārtikeya) reside—will attain Vaikuṇṭha.”

 andō! ninnaḍi anṛi maṭṛaṛiyēn * aḻundūr mēl tisai ninṛa ammānē!    

“O Lord who stood in west Thiruvaḻundūr! You have permanently occupied my heart along with mother Lakṣmī who has tender fingers, arms decorated with lovely bangles, and is like a beautiful doll! One who is dark-hued! Your cool and beautiful form resembles a cloud! You are the substance of Upaniṣads such as Chāndogya, Kauṣītakī, and Taittirīya, and Sāma Veda! O Trivikrama! I do not know any shelter other than Your lotus feet.”  

 

1610 neyyār āḻiyum saṅgamum ēndum * nīṇḍa tōḷuḍaiyāy! * aḍiyēnaic

 ceyyāda ulagattiḍaic ceydāy * siṛumaikkum perumaikkum uḷpuhundu **

 poyyāl aivar en meykuḍi ēṛip * pōṭṛi vāḻvadaṛku añji ninnaḍaindēn *

 aiyā! ninnaḍi anṛi maṭṛaṛiyēn * aḻundūr mēl tisai ninṛa ammānē!     

“O Lord who stood in west Thiruvaḻundūr! You possess long arms which wield the ghee-smeared disc and the conch! You put this servant of Yours under many material miseries; my five evil senses induced me to engage in sense gratification and over endeavouring; being afraid of this subservient life I surrendered to You; I do not know any shelter other than Your lotus feet.”  

1611 paranē! pañjavan pauḻiyan cōḻan * pār mannar mannar tām paṇindu ēttum

 varanē! * mādhavanē! madhusūdā! * maṭṛōr naltuṇai ninnalāl ilēn kāṇ **

 naranē! nāraṇanē! * tirunaṛaiyūr nambī! * emperumān! umbarāḷum

 aranē! * ādivarāgam mun ānāy! * aḻundūr mēl tisai ninṛa ammānē!     

“O Lord who stood in west Thiruvaḻundūr! O Supreme Personality of Godhead! O incredible Lord who is bowed down to and worshipped by kings and emperors called variously as Pañjavan, Pauḻiyan, Cōḻan! Mādhavā! Madhusūdā! Nara -Nārāyaṇā! O immaculate Lord residing in Tirunaṛaiyūr! Our Lord! O Supersoul of Rudra, the chief of demigods! O one who appeared as the ancient boar! I do not have a protector better than You!”    

 

1612 viṇḍān viṇ puha veñjamattu ariyāyp * pariyōn mārvagam paṭṛip piḷandu *

 paṇḍu ānuyya ōr mālvarai ēndum * paṇbāḷā! paranē! pavittiranē! **

 kaṇḍēn nān kali yugattadan tanmai * karumam āvadum entanakku aṛindēn *

 aṇḍā! ninnaḍi anṛi maṭṛaṛiyēn * aḻundūr mēl tisai ninṛa ammānē!     

“O Lord who stood in west Thiruvaḻundūr! You appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva, and sent the evil Hiraṇyakaśipu to heaven by catching him and cleaving his chest! O benevolent one, You held the Govardhana Hills as an umbrella to protect the cows! O the Supreme! O the immaculate! O Lord of the universes! I have realised this Kali-yuga’s nature and understood how to counter it; I do not know any shelter other than Your lotus feet.”  

 

1613 tōyā intayir ney amuduṇṇac connār * solli nagum parisē * peṭṛa

 tāyāl āppuṇḍirundu aḻudēṅgum tāḍāḷā! * taraiyōrkkum viṇṇōrkkum

 sēyāy! ** kirēda tirēda duvāpara kali yugam * ivai nāṅum mun ānāy! *

 āyā! ninnaḍi anṛi maṭṛaṛiyēn * aḻundūr mēl tisai ninṛa ammānē!     

“O Lord who stood in west Thiruvaḻundūr! O merciful Lord who gobbled tasty curd and ghee and cried pitifully when tied to a mortar by mother Yaśodā and was ridiculed by the cowherd women! You are unattainable to both those in this world and heaven! You are Satya-yuga, Tretā-yuga, Dvāpara-yuga and Kali-yuga! Gopāla Kṛṣṇa! I do not know any shelter other than Your lotus feet.”  

 

 

1614 kaṛuttuk kañjanai añja munindāy! * kārvaṇṇā! kaḍal pōl oḷivaṇṇā! *

 iṛuttiṭṭān viḍai ēḻum mun venṛāy! * endāy! andaram ēḻum mun ānāy! **

 aṛuttut tinṛiḍa añji ninnaḍaindēn *  aḻundūr mēl tisai ninṛa ammānē!    

“O Lord who stood in west Thiruvaḻundūr! You killed Kaṁsa who was hateful and afraid of You! You are cool like the rain cloud! You are dark-hued like the ocean! Once You tamed the seven demoniac bulls! My Lord! You are the Lord of the seven upper planets! Even though I wanted to bear the miseries due to the five senses, they tormented me so much that I have surrendered at Your lotus feet.”  

 

1615 neḍiyānē! kaḍiyār kali nambī! *

  ninnaiyē ninaindu iṅgu iruppēnai *

 kaḍiyār kāḷaiyar aivar pugundu *

  kāval seyda akkāvalaip piḻaittu **

 kuḍipōndu unnaḍik kīḻ vandu pugundēn *

  kūṛai sōṛu ivai tandu enakkaruḷi *

 aḍiyēnaip paṇi āṇḍukoḷ endāy! *

  aḻundūr mēl tisai ninṛa ammānē!     

“O Lord who stood in west Thiruvaḻundūr! O the Supreme! O pure Lord reclining in the Milk Ocean! My Lord! Though I kept meditating on You, the evil and strong senses kept me under their control; escaping from that prison, I have come to take shelter under Your lotus feet; please accept me as Your eternal servant and offer me shelter and food (Your lotus feet).”    

 

1616 kōvāy aivar en meykuḍi ēṛik * kūṛai sōṛu ivai tā enṛu kumaittup

 pōhār * nān avaraip poṛukkahilēn punidā! * puṭkoḍiyāy! neḍumālē! **

 tīvāy nāgaṇaiyil tuyilvānē! * tirumālē! inic seyvadonṛu aṛiyēn *

 ā!ā! enṛu aḍiyēṛku iṛai iraṅgāy * aḻundūr mēl tisai ninṛa ammānē!     

“O Lord who stood in west Thiruvaḻundūr! O immaculate! One who has Garuḍa on the flag! O Supreme! One who is reclining on the bed of Śeṣa Nāga who spits fire (on the enemies)! O Lord of mother Lakṣmī! The five senses control me and pester me demanding engagement in sense gratification; I am unable to bear their torture; I have come to take shelter under Your lotus feet; I do not know what to do; please be merciful to this servant.”    

 

1617 * anna mannu paimpūmpoḻil sūḻnda * aḻundūr mēl tisai ninṛa ammānai *

kanni mannu tiṇtōḷ kali kanṛi āli nāḍan * maṅgaik kula vēndan **

“Those who can recite properly this valuable gemstone necklace-like garland of ten sweet Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the chief of Tiruvāli and Tirumaṅgai who possesses ever-strong shoulders—about the Lord residing in west Thiruvaḻundūr which is surrounded by vast groves inhabited by swans—will live long as kings and rule the world under a big white parasol.” 

1618 * seṅgkamalat tirumagaḷum puviyum * sempon tiruvaḍiyin iṇai varuḍa munivar ētta *

 vaṅgamali taḍaṅgkaḍaluḷ anantan ennum * variyaravin aṇait tuyinṛa māyōn kāṇmin **

 eṅgumali niṛai pugaḻ nāl vedam * aindu vēḷvihaḷum kēḷvihaḷum iyanṛa tanmai *

 aṅgkamalattu ayan anaiyār payilum selvattu * aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛuhanda amarar kōvē    

“Look at the incredible Lord, the Lord of the eternally liberated, whose reddish lotus feet are massaged by mother Lakṣmī and mother earth; who is eulogised by great saints; who is reclining on Ananta Śeṣa in the Ocean of Milk; and who is mercifully standing in Thiruvaḻundūr where brāhmaṇas who are scholars in the four Vedas and hundreds of other scriptures, expert performers of pañca-mahā-yajñas and are as scholarly as Brahmā born from the lotus sprouted from the Lord’s navel, eternally reside.”

 

1619 mun ivvulagēḻum iruḷ maṇḍi uṇṇa * munivaroḍu dānavarhaḷ tisaippa * vandu

 pannukalai nāl vedap poruḷai ellām * parimugamāy aruḷiya em paraman kāṇmin **

 annam mali peḍaiyōḍum amarum selvattu aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛuhanda amarar kōvē    

“Look at our Supreme Lord, the Lord of the eternally liberated, who appeared as Hayagrīva and retrieved the four Vedas and other scriptures when ajñāna (dark ignorance) covered the seven planetary systems and the saints and the asuras were bewildered, is mercifully standing in Thiruvaḻundūr where in the fields mature paddy crops wave like whisks; conches are blown; and the male swans accompanied by their loving mates sit on the lotus flower beds.”

 

1620 kulattalaiya mada vēḻam poygai pukkuk * kōḷ mudalai piḍikka adaṛku anuṅgi ninṛu *

 nilattigaḻum malarc cuḍarēy sōdī! enna * neñjiḍar tīrttaruḷiya en nimalan kāṇmin **

 malaittigaḻ candagil kanakamaṇiyum koṇḍu * vandundi vayalgaḷ toṛum maḍaihaḷ pāya *

 alaittu varum ponni vaḷam peruhum selvattu * aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛuhanda amarar kōvē    

“Look at our Supreme Lord, the Lord of the eternally liberated, our blemishless Lord who relieved the misery of the king of elephants when he got into a lake and a crocodile caught his leg and in severe pain and exhaustion the elephant called out, ‘O one who is cool and resplendent like the spreading moonlight!’ He is mercifully standing in Thiruvaḻundūr which is very opulent because of the gushing river Kāverī which brings and dumps the sandalwood, agarwood, gold, and gemstones from the Sahyādri hills (Western Ghats) and fills all the fields with abundant water.”

 

1621 silambu mudal kalan aṇindōr seṅgaṇ kunṛam * tigaḻndadenat tiruvuruvam panṛi āgi *

ilaṅgu puvi maḍandai tanai iḍandu pulgi * eyiṭṛiḍai vaittaruḷiya em īsan kāṇmin **

 pulambu siṛai vaṇḍolippap pūgam tokka * poḻilhaḷ toṛum kuyil kūva mayilhaḷ āla *

 alambu tiraip punal puḍai sūḻndu aḻagār selvattu * aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛuhanda amarar kōvē    

“Look at our Supreme Lord, the Lord of the eternally liberated, who appeared as a huge boar, resembling a huge mountain with red eyes adorned with anklets and other ornaments, lifted up the effulgent mother earth from the depth of the ocean, embraced her, and held her on His horn, is mercifully standing in the beautiful Thiruvaḻundūr which is opulent because of the rushing river Kāverī flowing all around and in the groves full of betel nut trees the bees hum, koels call, and peacocks dance.   

 

1622 sinamēvum aḍal ariyin uruvamāhit * tiṛal mēvum iraṇiyanadu āgam kīṇḍu *

 manamēvu vañjanaiyāl vanda pēycci * māḷa uyir vavviya em māyōn kāṇmin **

 inamēvu varivaḷaikkai ēndum kōvai * yēyvāya maragadam pōl kiḷiyin insol *

 anamēvu naḍai maḍavār payilum selvattu * aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛuhanda amarar kōvē    

“Look at our mystical Lord, the Lord of the eternally liberated, who appeared as a powerful and angry Nṛsiṁhadeva and split the chest of mighty Hiraṇyakaśipu; who sucked the life air and killed the demon Pūtanā who came with an evil intention (to kill Him) is mercifully standing in the beautiful Thiruvaḻundūr which has the fame for being the residence of many damsels adorned with a bunch of multi-coloured bangles, with swan-like gait, and sweet words like the emerald green-hued parrot, which has a red beak like the ivy gourd fruit, held on their hand.”  

 

1623 vānavar tam tuyar tīra vandu tōnṛi * māṇuruvāy mūvaḍi māvaliyai vēṇḍi *

 tānamara ēḻulagum aḷanda venṛit * tani mudal cakkarap paḍai en talaivan kāṇmin **

 tēnamarum poḻil taḻuvum eḻil koḷ vīdic * ceḻumāḍa māḷigaihaḷ kūḍantōṛum *

 ānatolsīr maṛaiyāḷar payilum selvattu * aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛuhanda amarar kōvē

“Look at our Lord, the Lord of the eternally liberated, who, to relieve the distress of the demigods, appeared as a brahmacārī (Vāmana), begged three feet of land from Bali, and covered all the planetary systems with His two steps; and who wields the victorious, matchless, and the powerful disc weapon in His hand is mercifully standing in the beautiful, and opulent Thiruvaḻundūr surrounded by honey-rich groves and where expert Vedic brāhmaṇas who are very knowledgeable reside in rich multi-storied palaces and nice houses everywhere.”          

 

1624 pandaṇainda melviralāḷ sītaikkāhip * pagalavan mīdiyaṅgāda ilaṅgai vēndan *

 andamil tiṇ karam siraṅgaḷ puraṇḍu vīḻa * aḍukaṇaiyāl eyduhanda ammān kāṇmin **

 sentamiḻum vaḍakalaiyum tihaḻnda nāvar * tisaimuganai anaiyavarhaḷ semmai mikka *

 andaṇar tam āgudiyin puhaiyār selvattu * aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛuhanda amarar kōvē    

“Look at our Lord, the Lord of the eternally liberated, who, for the sake of mother Sītā, shot deadly arrows to cut off the strong shoulders and the heads of Rāvaṇa—the king of Laṅkā where the sun did not shine above in fear (of Rāvaṇa)—and made them roll on the ground is mercifully standing in the beautiful, and opulent Thiruvaḻundūr` which is covered by the smoke from the yajñas performed by meritorious brāhmaṇas who can recite both chaste Tamiḻ and Sanskrit hymns and are equivalent to Brahmā in scholarship.”

 

1625 kumbamihu mada vēḻam kulaiyak kombu paṛittu * maḻa viḍai aḍarttuk kuravai kōttu *

 vambaviḻum malark kuḻalāḷ āycci vaitta * tayir veṇṇey uṇḍuhanda māyōn kāṇmin **

 sempavaḷa maradagam nanmuttam kāṭṭat * tihaḻ pūgam kadali pala vaḷam mikku eṅgum *

 ampon madiḷ poḻil puḍai sūḻndu aḻagār selvattu * aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛuhanda amarar kōvē    8

“Look at our mystical Lord, the Lord of the eternally liberated, who, broke the tusk and killed the wild, demoniac elephant; who tamed the seven powerful bulls; who performed the rāsa dance; who happily gobbled the curd and butter stored in the pots on the rope hangars by mother Yaśodā whose hair is decorated with fragrant flowers; and who is incredible is mercifully standing in the beautiful, and opulent Thiruvaḻundūr` where plenty of plantain trees and betel nut trees displaying red coral-like flowers, green emerald-like fruits, and white pearl-like buds are there, and which is surrounded by gold-plated ramparts and groves.”      

 

 

1626 ūḍēṛu kañjanoḍu mallum villum * oṇkariyum uruḷśakaḍum uḍaiyac ceṭṛa *

 nīḍēṛu peruvalit tōḷuḍaiya venṛi * nilavu pugaḻ nēmi aṅgai neḍiyōn kāṇmin **

 sēḍēṛu poḻil taḻuvum eḻil koḷ vīdit * tiruviḻavil maṇi aṇinda tiṇṇai tōṛum *

 āḍēṛu malark kuḻalār payilum selvattu * aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛuhanda amarar kōvē    

“Look at our mystical Lord, the Lord of the eternally liberated, who killed Kaṁsa seated on the throne, his wrestlers, his mighty bow, and his powerful elephant, and Śakaṭāsura in the form of a wheel; who has huge, strong shoulders; who wields the disc weapon famous because of being ever victorious; and who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead is mercifully standing in the beautiful, and opulent Thiruvaḻundūr` which is surrounded by fertile groves and where the gem-studded porticos are crowded by the damsels, whose hair is decorated by flowers and who are expert dancers, to watch the festival processions on the elegant streets.”

 

1627 * panṛiyāy mīnāhi ariyāyp * pāraip paḍaittuk kāttu uṇḍu umiḻnda paraman tannai *

 anṛu amararkku adipadiyum ayanum sēyum * aḍi paṇiya aṇiyaḻundūr ninṛa kōvai **

 kanṛi neḍuvēl valavan āli nāḍan * kalikanṛi oli seyda inbap pāḍal *

 onṛinoḍu nāngum ōraindum vallār * olikaḍal sūḻ ulagāḷum umbar tāmē

“Those who can recite and realise these melodious ten sweet Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the chief of Tiruvāli who possesses a victorious spear, and is also known as Kalikanṛi—about the Lord who appeared as Varāha, Matsya, Nṛsiṁhadeva; who created, protected, swallowed, and brought out the earth; who is the Absolute Truth; who is standing in Thiruvaḻundūr, His lotus feet worshipped by Indra, Brahmā, and his son Śiva; and who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead—will become kings and rule the world.” 

1628 * kaḷḷam manam viḷḷum vahai * karudik kaḻal toḻuvīr *

 veḷḷam mudu paravait * tirai viriya ** karai eṅgum

 teḷḷum maṇi tigaḻum * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanattu

 uḷḷum * enadu uḷḷattuḷum * uṛaivārai uḷḷīrē    

“Those devotees who want to worship the lotus feet of the Lord to eliminate the evil thoughts from their hearts should meditate on the Lord eternally reclining inside the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam (yoga-nidrā)’ in Siṛupuliyūr[1]—where the waves of the ancient ocean bring and dump gemstones on the shore—and in my heart also.”

 

1629 teruvil tiri siṛu nōnbiyar * señjōṭṛoḍu kañji

 maruvi * pirindavar vāymoḻi * madiyādu vandaḍaivīr! **

 tiruvil poli maṛaiyōr * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanattu *

 uruvak kuṛaḷaḍihaḷ * aḍi uṇarmin uṇarvīrē          

“O wise men! Come to the Lord, rejecting the words of the Jains who deviated (from the devotional path) desiring red rice and porridge as part of their trivial fasting and who roam on the streets; meditate on the lotus feet of the Lord who appeared as the charming Vāmana and is residing inside the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam’ in Siṛupuliyūr where opulent Vedic brāhmaṇas live.”    

 

1630 paṛaiyum vinai toḻudu uymin nīr * paṇiyum siṛu toṇḍīr! *

 aṛaiyum punal orupāl * vayal orupāl poḻil orupāl **

 siṛai vaṇḍinam aṛaiyum * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanattu

 uṛaiyum * iṛai aḍi alladu * onṛu iṛaiyum aṛiyēnē           

“O worldly people! You should get delivered by worshipping the Lord and get rid of your sins; I do not know anything other than the lotus feet of the Lord residing inside the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam’ in Siṛupuliyūr where swarms of the bumblebees fly humming on the flowing water, in the fields, and the groves.”    

 1631 vānār madi podiyum saḍai * maḻuvāḷiyoḍu orupāl *

 tānāhiya talaivan avan * amararkku adipadiyām **

 tēnār poḻil taḻuvum * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanattu

 ānāyanadu * aḍiyalladu * onṛaṛiyēn aḍiyēnē          

“I do not know anything other than the lotus feet of Gopāla Kṛṣṇa—who is the Supreme Lord and whose part of the body are Śiva who has the crescent moon on his matted hair and a hatchet in his hand and Indra the master of the demigods—residing inside the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam’ in Siṛupuliyūr which is surrounded by honey-rich groves.”

 

1632 nandā neḍunaragattiḍai * naṇugā vahai * nāḷum

endāy! ena * imaiyōr toḻudēttum iḍam ** eṛi nīrc

centāmarai malarum * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanattu *

 antāmarai aḍiyāy! * unadaḍiyēṛku aruḷ puriyē    

“O Lord, whose lotus feet are daily worshipped by the demigods praying, ‘My Lord!’ residing inside the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam’ in Siṛupuliyūr where in the water-rich lakes are plenty of red lotus flowers; whose elegant feet are like the lotus flower; please be merciful to this servant of Yours and save me from the eternal hell!”  

 

1633 muḻu nīlamum malar āmbalum * aravindamum viravi *

 kaḻunīroḍu maḍavār avar * kaṇvāy mugamalarum **

 seḻunīr vayal taḻuvum * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanam *

 toḻunīrmaiyadu uḍaiyār * aḍi toḻuvār tuyar ilarē      

“Those who always worship the lotus feet of the devotees who worship the Lord residing inside the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam’ in Siṛupuliyūr which is surrounded by well-irrigated fields which are full of dark blue water lilies, the red water lilies, and the lotus flower which resemble respectively the eyes, lips and the face of the ladies.”   

 

1634 * sēyōṅgu * taṇ tirumāliruñjōlai malai uṛaiyum

 māyā! * enakkuraiyāy idu * maṛai nāṅginuḷāyō? **

 tīyōmpugai maṛaiyōr * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanattu

 āyō? * unadaḍiyār manattāyō? aṛiyēnē      

“O incredible Lord eternally residing in the tall Tirumāliruñjōlai Hills! Are You in the four Vedas? Are You in the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam’ in Siṛupuliyūr where brāhmaṇas performing fire sacrifices live? Are You in the hearts of Your devotees? I do not know; kindly reveal the truth.”  

 

1635 maiyār vari nīlam * malark kaṇṇār manam viṭṭiṭṭu *

 uyvān una kaḻalē * toḻudu eḻuvēn kiḷi maḍavār **

 sevvāy moḻi payilum * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanattu *

 aivāy aravaṇai mēl * uṛai amalā! aruḷāyē            

“O immaculate Lord reclining on the bed of the five-headed Śeṣa Nāga in the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam’ in Siṛupuliyūr where the parrots learn to repeat the words from the mouth of the ladies with red lips! I have removed from my heart the ladies, whose collyrium-smeared eyes are streaked and resemble the black water lilies; and with the desire to be delivered, I worship Your lotus feet; kindly be merciful to me.”     

 

1636 * karumā mugil uruvā! * kanal uruvā! punal uruvā! *

 perumāl varai uruvā! * piṛa uruvā! ninaduruvā! **

 tirumāmagaḷ maruvum * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanattu *

 arumākaḍal amudē! * unadu aḍiyē saraṇāmē      

“O Lord in the form of a rain cloud! O one in the form of fire! O Lord in the form of cool water! O Lord in a mountain-like form! O one in many forms! O Lord in incredible ‘arcā-vigraha’ form! O Lord like the unattainable nectar of the ocean, residing in the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam’ in Siṛupuliyūr, the eternal abode of mother Lakṣmī! Your lotus feet are my shelter.”  

 

1637 * sīrār neḍumaṛugil * siṛupuliyūrc calasayanattu *

 ērār mugilvaṇṇan tanai * imaiyōr perumānai **

 kārār vayal maṅgaikkiṛai * kaliyan oli mālai *

“Those who can worship the Lord  reciting these ten songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the chief of Tirumaṅgai which has plenty of fertile fields—about the Lord who resides in the Sanctum Sanctorum in ‘Chalasayanam’ in Siṛupuliyūr which has well laid long streets; who is rain cloud-hued; and who is the chief of the demigods—will be rid of their sins.”

 mynniṛakkaḍalaik kaḍal vaṇṇanai * mālai ālilaip paḷḷi koḷ māyanai **

 nennalaip pagalai iṭṛai nāḷinai * nāḷaiyāy varum tiṅgaḷai āṇḍinai *

 kannalaik karumbiniḍait tēṛalaik * kaṇṇamaṅgaiyuḷ kaṇḍu koṇḍēnē     

“I roamed around searching and found the Lord—who is the goal of pure devotional service; who is the Absolute Truth who delivers (His devotees); who cannot be understood (by atheists); who wields the conch; who is dark ocean-hued; who is majestic like the ocean; who is the Supreme Lord; who is the incredible Lord who reclined on a banyan leaf (as a baby in the pralaya waters); who is like the lingering nice memory of the past; who is the pleasant experience of today; who gives the happiness of the future; who is the Lord of the month and the year; who is sweet like the sugar candy and the juice of sugarcane—in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai.”

 

1640 eṅgaḷukku aruḷ seyhinṛa īsanai * vāsavār kuḻalāḷ malai maṅgai tan

 paṅganai * paṅgil vaittu uhandān tannaip * pānmaiyaip pani māmadiyam tavaḻ **

 maṅgulaic cuḍarai vaḍa māmalai ucciyai * nacci nām vaṇaṅgappaḍum

 kaṅgulai * pagalaic cenṛu nāḍik * kaṇṇamaṅgaiyuḷ kaṇḍu koṇḍēnē

     

“I roamed around searching and found the Lord—who is very merciful to us; who has given a part in His body to Rudra who has given half of his body to the fragrant haired Pārvatī; who is full of auspicious qualities; who is the sky traversed by the cool moon; who is the Supersoul of the sun;—in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai.”

 

1641 pēy mulaittala nañjuṇḍa piḷḷaiyait * teḷḷiyār vaṇaṅgappaḍun devanai *

 māyanai madiḷ kōval iḍaikaḻi maindanai * anṛi andaṇar sindaiyuḷ

 īsanai ** ilaṅgum suḍarc cōdiyai * endaiyai enakku eyppinil vaippinai *

 kāsinai maṇiyaic cenṛu nāḍik * kaṇṇamaṅgaiyuḷ kaṇḍu koṇḍēnē    

“I roamed around searching and found the Lord—who sucked the poison from the breast of the demon Pūtanā; who is worshipped by the self-realised jñānīs; whose activities are incredible; who jostled for a place among the first three Āḻvārs (Poigai Āḻvār, Būtatāḻvār, Peiāḻvār in a small cave) in Tirukkōvalūr; who resides in the heart of the devotees and guides them; who is the effulgent brahma-jyoti; my Lord; who aids me in a crisis like wealth saved for old age; who is like gold; and who is like an invaluable gemstone—in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai.”

 āṭṛalai aṇḍattu appuṛattu uyttiḍum aiyanaik * kaiyil āḻi onṛēndiya

“I roamed around searching and found the Lord—who is like a powerful bull; who resides in Tiruppiridi in the Himālayas; who provides for this life and the results after this life; who is all-powerful; who can deliver His devotees and provide a place in Vaikuṇṭha; the nemesis (for enemies) who wields the disc weapon; who is like a blue sapphire gemstone hill; the heap of pearl who resides in Tiruninṛavūr; who is like a pleasant breeze; and who is the life-giving water—in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai.”           

 

1643 tuppanait turaṅgam paḍac cīṛiya tōnṛalaic * cuḍar vān kalan peydadōr

 ceppinai * tirumaṅgai maṇāḷanait * devanait tihaḻum pavaḷattoḷi

 oppanai ** ulagēḻinai ūḻiyai āḻi ēndiya kaiyanai * andaṇar

 kaṛpinai * kaḻunīr malarum vayal * kaṇṇamaṅgaiyuḷ kaṇḍu koṇḍēnē

“I found the Lord—who is resolute; who is glorified for killing the demon in horse form; who is like a copper box for storing valuable jewels; who is the husband of mother Lakṣmī; who is like the resplendence of the coral; who is the Lord of all the planetary systems; who is time; who wields the disc weapon; and who is the subject of the learning of Vedic seers—in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai which has many fields with plenty of red lotus flowers.”                  

 

1644 tiruttanait tisai nānmugan tandaiyait * deva devanai mūvaril munniya

 viruttanai * viḷaṅgum suḍarc cōdiyai *  viṇṇai maṇṇinaik kaṇṇudal kūḍiya

 aruttanai ** ariyaip pari kīṛiya appanai * appilār aḻalāy ninṛa

 karuttanai * kaḷi vaṇḍaṛaiyum poḻil * kaṇṇamaṅgaiyuḷ kaṇḍu koṇḍēnē    

“I found the Lord—who is fully satisfied; who is the father of Brahmā; who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead; who is the chief among the three (Viṣṇu, Śiva, Brahmā); who is the effulgent brahma-jyoti; who is the chief of the upper planets and the earth; who has given the three-eyed Śiva a part in His body; who is known as Hari; who killed the horse demon; and the cause of all causes in whom all the objects enter and stay during mahā pralaya—in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai which has many groves swarmed with happily humming bees.”    

 

1645 veñjinak kaḷiṭṛai viḷaṅgāy viḻak * kanṛu vīsiya īsanai * pēy magaḷ

 tuñja nañju suvaittuṇḍa tōnṛalait * tōnṛal vāḷarakkan keḍat tōnṛiya

 nañjinai ** amudattinai nādanai * naccuvār ucci mēl niṛkum nambiyai *

 kañjanait tuñja vañjitta vañjanaik * kaṇṇamaṅgaiyuḷ kaṇḍu koṇḍēnē     

“I found the Lord—who is like an angry elephant in musth; who killed Vatsāsura by throwing him on the wood apple tree and thereby killing Kapitāsura also; who as a baby sucked the poison from the nipple along with the life of the demon Pūtanā; who appeared as the lethal poison for the sword-wielding Rāvaṇa, the king of Laṅkā; who is the ambrosia for His devotees; who is the Lord of all; who protects the heads of those who love Him; and the chivalrous Lord who killed the evil Kaṁsa—in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai.”  

 

1646 paṇṇinaip paṇṇil ninṛadōr pānmaiyaip * pāluḷ neyyinai māluruvāy ninṛa

 viṇṇinai * viḷaṅgum suḍarc cōdiyai * vēḷviyai viḷakkin oḷi tannai **

 maṇṇinai malaiyai alai nīrinai * mālai māmadiyai maṛaiyōr taṅgaḷ

 kaṇṇinai * kaṇgaḷāraḷavum ninṛu * kaṇṇamaṅgaiyuḷ kaṇḍu koṇḍēnē    

“I found the Lord—who is melodious like music; who is gentle like the basic quality of a melodious song; who is present everywhere, but invisible like ghee is present unmanifested in milk; who is the Lord of the vast spiritual world; who is brahma-jyotir; who is yajna; who is luminous like the light of the lamp; who is tolerant like earth; who is unshakeable like a mountain; who goes anywhere like water; who is loving to His devotees; who grants spiritual wisdom; and who is like eyes to the Vedic seers—in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai to the total satisfaction of my eyes.”  

    

1647 * kaṇṇamaṅgaiyuḷ kaṇḍu koṇḍēn enṛu * kādalāl kalikanṛi urai seyda *

 vaṇṇa oṇtamiḻ onbadōḍu onṛivai * vallarāy uraippār madiyam tavaḻ **

 viṇṇil viṇṇavarāy magiḻveyduvar * meymmai sollin veṇsaṅgam onṛēndiya

 kaṇṇa! * nindanakkum kuṛippāhil kaṛkalām * kaviyin poruḷ tānē

“Those who can devotedly recite these ten melodious and perfect Tamiḻ songs—rendered lovingly by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār about worshipping the Lord in Tirukkaṇṇamaṅgai—will go to the celestial world, where the moon travels, and enjoy as a demigod. In fact, O Lord wielding the white conch! If You desire so, You can also listen and understand these songs!”
