 toṇḍarum amararum paṇiya ninṛu * aṅgu aṇḍamoḍu agaliḍam aḷandavanē! **

 āṇḍāy! unaik kāṇbadōr * aruḷ enakku aruḷudiyēl *

 vēṇḍēn manai vāḻkkaiyai * viṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O my Lord! O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar![1] Your lotus feet are worshipped by the demigods and the devotees with the desire, ‘Our sinful reactions should be totally eradicated’ who bring garlands of fresh, fragrant flowers swarmed by bees to offer to You; O Lord who measured the vast earth and the planetary systems! If You kindly grant me the vision to see You, I will be saved from the cycle of birth and death.”

 

1449 aṇṇal seydu alai kaḍal kaḍaindu * adanuḷ kaṇṇudal nañjuṇṇak kaṇḍavanē! *

 viṇṇavar amuduṇa amudil varum * peṇṇamudu uṇḍa emperumānē! **

 āṇḍāy! unaik kāṇbadōr * aruḷ enakku aruḷudiyēl *

 vēṇḍēn manai vāḻkkaiyai * viṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O my Lord! O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! Taking total charge of the churning of the Milk Ocean, You asked Rudra with the third eye to swallow the deadly kālakūṭa poison! While the demigods took the ambrosia, the goddess of fortune, Ramā, who appeared from the ambrosia was dedicated to being enjoyed by You! If You kindly grant me the vision to see You, I will be saved from the cycle of birth and death.”

 

1450 kuḻal niṛa vaṇṇa! nin kūṛu koṇḍa * taḻal niṛa vaṇṇan naṇṇār nagaram 

 viḻa * nani malai silai vaḷaivu seydu * aṅgu aḻal niṛa ambaduvānavanē! **

 āṇḍāy! unaik kāṇbadōr * aruḷ enakku aruḷudiyēl *

 vēṇḍēn manai vāḻkkaiyai * viṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O my Lord! O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! O dark-hued like the hair! You empowered the flame-hued Rudra, who occupies a portion of Your body, to burn the city of Tripura of the inimical asuras by making the huge Mount Meru as the bow, and energised the flame-hued arrow by Your entry! If You kindly grant me the vision to see You, I will be saved from the cycle of birth and death.”

 

1451 nilavoḍu veyil nila iru suḍarum * ulagamum uyirgaḷum uṇḍu oru kāl *

 kalai taru kuḻaviyin uru vinaiyāy * alaikaḍal ālilai vaḷarndavanē! **

 āṇḍāy! unaik kāṇbadōr * aruḷ enakku aruḷudiyēl *

 vēṇḍēn manai vāḻkkaiyai * viṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O my Lord! O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! At the time of pralaya, You swallowed the cool moon and the hot sun, the planetary systems, and the living beings, and in the turbulent waters, You reclined on a banyan leaf in the form of a baby! If You kindly grant me the vision to see You, I will be saved from the cycle of birth and death.”

 

1452 pāreḻu kaḍaleḻu malaiyeḻumāyc * cīrkeḻum ivvulagēḻum ellām *

 ārkeḻu vayiṭṛinil aḍakki ninṛu * aṅgu ōreḻuttu ōruruvānavanē! **

 āṇḍāy! unaik kāṇbadōr * aruḷ enakku aruḷudiyēl *

 vēṇḍēn manai vāḻkkaiyai * viṇṇagar mēyavanē!   5

“O my Lord! O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! You are the earth with the seven islands, the seven oceans, the seven mountains; at the time of pralaya, You swallowed the seven opulent planetary systems and kept them in Your beautiful stomach! You are the beginning of everything like the syllable ‘a’ (‘’) is the beginning of all writings. If You kindly grant me the vision to see You, I will be saved from the cycle of birth and death.”

 

 

1453 kārkeḻu kaḍalhaḷum malaihaḷumāy * ērkeḻum ulagamumāhi * muda

 lārgaḷum aṛivaru nilaiyinaiyāyc * sīrkeḻu nānmaṛai ānavanē! **

 āṇḍāy! unaik kāṇbadōr * aruḷ enakku aruḷudiyēl *

 vēṇḍēn manai vāḻkkaiyai * viṇṇagar mēyavanē!  

“O my Lord! O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! You are the seven oceans, the seven mountains, the seven opulent planetary systems; You are not understandable to the chief demigods like Brahmā and Śiva; and You are also the four Vedas! If You kindly grant me the vision to see You, I will be saved from the cycle of birth and death.”

 

1454 urukkuṛu naṛuney koṇḍu āraḻalil * irukkuṛum andaṇar sandiyin vāy *

 perukkamoḍu amararhaḷ amara nalgum * irukkinil innisai ānavanē! **

 āṇḍāy! unaik kāṇbadōr * aruḷ enakku aruḷudiyēl *

 vēṇḍēn manai vāḻkkaiyai * viṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O my Lord! O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! You are the musical note of the Vedas suitable to chant while the Vedic brahmaṇas, who are desirous of getting wealthier by pleasing the demigods, pour fragrant, clarified butter in the fire, everyday evening! If You kindly grant me the vision to see You, I will be saved from the cycle of birth and death.”

 

1455 kādal seydu iḷaiyavar kalavi tarum * vēdanai vinaiyadu veruvudalām *

 ādalin unadaḍi aṇuguvan nān * pōdalār neḍu muḍip puṇṇiyanē! **

 āṇḍāy! unaik kāṇbadōr * aruḷ enakku aruḷudiyēl *

 vēṇḍēn manai vāḻkkaiyai * viṇṇagar mēyavanē!   8

“O my Lord! O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar!  āṇḍāy! unaik kāṇbadōr * aruḷ enakku aruḷudiyēl *

 vēṇḍēn manai vāḻkkaiyai * viṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O my Lord! O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! You are the Vedas learnt by chanting in disciplic succession; You are the chief demigods like Brahmā, Śiva, and Indra! I have surrendered at Your lotus feet rejecting the cycle of birth and death; if You kindly grant me the vision to see You, I will be saved from the cycle of birth and death.”

 

 1457 * pūmaru poḻil aṇi * viṇṇagar mēl *

 kāmaru sīrk * kali kanṛi sonna **

 pāmaru tamiḻ ivai * pāḍa vallār *

 vāmanan aḍi iṇai * maruvuvarē      

“Those who recite these ten Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who possesses all the desired Vaiṣṇava qualities—about Tiruviṇṇagar with many groves full of fragrant flowers, will attain the lotus feet of the Lord.”

1458 * poṛuttēn punsol neñjil * poruḷ inbam ena iraṇḍum

 iṛuttēn * aimpulaṅaṭkiḍanāyina * vāyiloṭṭi

 aṛuttēn ** ārvac ceṭṛam avai tannai * manattahaṭṛi

 veṛuttēn * ninnaḍaindēn * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanē!  

“O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! I tolerated the abuses of others; I engaged in sense gratification to satisfy my desires for wealth and sex; I performed actions favouring those whom I loved and inimical to my enemies; now, having developed an aversion for these materialistic desires and activities, I eliminated them from my heart and surrendered to You.”

 

1459 maṛandēn unnai munnam * maṛanda madiyil manattāl *

 iṛandēn ettanaiyum * adanāl iḍumbaik kuḻiyil **

 piṛandē eyttu oḻindēn * perumān! tirumārbā! *

 siṛandēn ninnaḍikkē * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! O Lord keeping Śrī-lakṣmī on the chest! Earlier I had totally forgotten You; due to ignorance I degraded to the lowest level; so, I suffered caught in the cycle of birth and death; now, I am qualified to surrender at Your lotus feet.”

 

1460 mānēy nōkkiyar tam * vayiṭṛuk kuḻiyil uḻaikkum * ūnēr

ākkai tannai * udavāmai uṇarndu uṇarndu **

vānē! mānilamē! * vandu vandu en manattu irunda

tēnē! * ninnaḍaindēn * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! O Lord, You are both the spiritual and material worlds! O nectar, You have entered voluntarily and reside eternally in my heart! due to ignorance I degraded to the lowest level; so, I suffered caught in the cycle of birth and death; now, I am qualified to surrender at Your lotus feet.”

 

 

1461 piṛindēn peṭṛa makkaḷ * peṇḍir enṛivar pin udavādu

 aṛindēn * nī paṇitta aruḷ ennum * oḷ vāḷ uruvi

 eṛindēn ** aimpulaṅaḷ iḍar tīra * eṛindu vandu

 seṛindēn * ninnaḍikkē * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanē!    

“O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! Realising that sons, wife, and other relatives cannot save one from death, I left them; I cut off the misery caused by sense gratification with the effulgent sword of the knowledge from the revealed scriptures; now, devoid of all material contaminations, I surrender at Your lotus feet.”

 

1462 pāṇ tēn vaṇḍaṛaiyum kuḻalārhaḷ * pallāṇḍu isaippa *

 āṇḍār vaiyam ellām * arasāhi ** mun āṇḍavarē

 māṇḍār enṛu vandār andō! * manai vāḻkkai tannai

 vēṇḍēn * ninnaḍaindēn * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanē!    

“O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! Glorified by the women with hair (decorated with flowers) swarmed by humming honey bees, many kings ruled the earth; but, all those kings are dead as everybody else; I do not want this temporary material life; I surrender at Your lotus feet.”

 

 1463 kallā aimpulangkaḷ avai * kaṇḍavāṛu seyyahillēn *

 mallā! mallamaruḷ mallar māḷa * mallaḍartta

 mallā! ** mallalam sīr * madiḷ nīr ilaṅgai aḻitta

 villā! * ninnaḍaindēn * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! I do not want to be controlled by the unruly senses. O mighty Lord! O expert wrestler! You defeated the great wrestlers easily and killed them; O wielder of the bow which devastated Laṅkā protected by the surrounding rampart and the ocean! I surrender at Your lotus feet.”

 

1464 vēṛā yān irandēn * veguḷādu manakkoḷ endāy! *

 āṛā vennaragattu * aḍiyēnai iḍak karudi **

 kūṛā aivar vandu kumaikkak * kuḍi viṭṭavarai *

 tēṛādu unnaḍaindēn * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! O my Lord! I beg You, please listen to me without getting angry (for having ignored You all along); the senses, taking control of me, continuously harassed me and tried to keep me in the never-ending, miserable cycle of birth and death; but, I have renounced those senses given by You (actually to engage in devotional service) and surrender at Your lotus feet.”

 

1465 tīvāy valvinaiyār * uḍan ninṛu siṛandavar pōl *

 mēvā vennaragattu * iḍavuṭṛu viraindu vandār **

 mūvā vānavar tam mudalvā! * madi kōḷ viḍutta

devā! * ninnaḍaindēn * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! Very fearsome sinful reactions, not leaving me like very close relatives, are very actively pushing me into the deadly hell; o ever youthful Lord of the demigods! O Lord who relieved the moon from its curse! I have surrendered at Your lotus feet.”

 

1466 pōdār tāmaraiyāḷ * pulavik kulavānavar tam

 kōdā! * kōdil seṅgōl * kuḍai mannar iḍai naḍanda

 tūdā! * tūmoḻiyāy! suḍar pōl * en manattirunda

 vedā! * ninnaḍaindēn * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanē!   

“O Lord residing in Tiruviṇṇagar! The beloved of Śrī-lakṣmī, Bhū-devī, and Your eternal associates! One who went as the messenger (of Pāṇḍavas) to the Kauravas who, wielding the sceptre and remaining under the parasol (wrested from the Pāṇḍavas), were ruling! One whose words are auspicious! O the source of Vedic scriptures, shining as a lamp, You are in my heart! I have surrendered at Your lotus feet.”

 

1467 * tēnār pūm puṛavil * tiruviṇṇagar mēyavanai *

 vānārum madiḷ sūḻ * vayal maṅgaiyar kōn maruvār **

 ūnār vēl kaliyan * oli sey tamiḻ mālai vallār *

 kōnāy vānavar tam * koḍi mānagar kūḍuvarē

“Those who can recite these ten Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who possesses a spear which pierces the bodies of the enemies and is the chief of Tirumaṅgai surrounded by sky-high ramparts and fertile fields—about the Lord eternally residing in Tiruviṇṇagar with many groves full of honey-filled flowers, will attain Vaikuṇṭha decorated by the flags of the eternal associates of the Lord!”

1468 * tuṛappēn allēn * inbam tuṛavādu * nin uruvam

 maṛappēn allēn * enṛum maṛavādu ** yān ulagil

 piṛappēnāga eṇṇēn * piṛavāmai peṭṛadu * nin

 tiṛattēnā tanmaiyāl * tiruviṇṇagarānē!    

“O Lord of Tiruviṇṇagar! I will never lose the bliss of worshipping You; with that determination, I will never forget Your incredibly beautiful form; always remembering Your form, I do not want to continue in the cycle of birth and death; I could escape from the cycle of birth and death only because of surrendering to You.”

 

1469 tuṛandēn ārvac ceṭṛac * cuṭṛam tuṛandamaiyāl *

 siṛandēn ninnaḍikkē * aḍimai tirumālē! **

 aṛandānāyt tirivāy! * unnai en manattahattē *

 tiṛambāmal koṇḍēn * tiruviṇṇagarānē!     

“O Lord of Tiruviṇṇagar! O Lord Tirumāl! As an upholder of dharma, You always reward people according to their adherence to dharma! Since I renounced bodily relationships, mundane love, and enmity, I became eligible to serve Your lotus feet; I have placed You firmly in my heart.”

 

1470 mānēy nōkku nallār * madi pōl mugattu ulavum *

 ūnēy kaṇ vāḷikku * uḍaindōṭṭattu unnaḍaindēn **

 kōnē! kuṛuṅguḍiyuḷ kuḻagā! * tirunaṛaiyūrt

 tēnē! * varupunal sūḻ * tiruviṇṇagarānē!     

“O Lord of Tiruviṇṇagar surrounded by rich water bodies! O Supreme Lord! O equitable Lord in standing posture in Tirukkuṛuṅguḍi! Terrified by the arrow of the beguiling look from the eyes of women with moon-like faces and eyes like those of a doe, I came running and surrendered to You.”

 

1471 sāndēndu men mulaiyār * taḍantōḷ puṇar inba veḷḷattu

 āḻndēn * arunaragattu aḻundum * payan paḍaittēn **

 pōndēn puṇṇiyanē! * unnai eydi en tīvinaihaḷ

 tīrndēn * ninnaḍaindēn * tiruviṇṇagarānē!     

“O Lord of Tiruviṇṇagar! I was drowned in the ocean of materialistic pleasure experienced by embracing the attractive shoulders of damsels with tender breasts smeared with sandal paste; so, the hellish cycle of repeated birth and death was awaiting me; o sinless Lord! I came and surrendered to You and was relieved of my terrible sins.”

 

1472 maṭṛōr deyvam eṇṇēn * unnai en manattu vaittup

 peṭṛēn * peṭṛaduvum * piṛavāmai emperumān! **

 vaṭṛā nīḷ kaḍal sūḻ * ilaṅgai irāvaṇanaic

 ceṭṛāy! * koṭṛavanē! * tiruviṇṇagarānē!     

“O Lord of Tiruviṇṇagar! O one who killed Rāvaṇa of Laṅkā surrounded by a deep ocean! O the Supreme Personality of Godhead! I will not even think of any other god; O my Lord! Placing You in my heart, I have been liberated from the hellish cycle of repeated birth and death.”

 

1473 maiyoṇ karuṅgkaḍalum * nilanum maṇivaraiyum *

     seyya suḍar iraṇḍum * ivaiyāya ninnai ** neñjil

 uyyum vahai uṇarndēn * uṇmaiyāl ini * yādum maṭṛōr

 deyvam piṛidaṛiyēn * tiruviṇṇagarānē!     

“O Lord of Tiruviṇṇagar! I realised the truth that the dark ocean, the earth, the mountains, the luminant sun and the moon are Your expansion! So, I will not even think of any demigod.”

 

1474 vēṛē kūṛuvaduṇḍu * aḍiyēn viritturaikku

 māṛē * nī paṇiyādu aḍai * nin tirumanattu **

 kūṛēn neñju tannāl * guṇam koṇḍu * maṭṛōr deyvam

 tēṛēn unnai allāl * tiruviṇṇagarānē!

“O Lord of Tiruviṇṇagar! Please permit me to make an appeal to You! Please help me say it briefly and not elaborate on it and kindly accept it; So, I will never think of any demigod; even if they have very good qualities, I will not consider them.”

 

1475 muḷindīnda veṅgaḍattu * mūrip peruṅgaḷiṭṛāl *

 viḷindīnda māmaram pōl * vīḻndārai ninaiyādē **

 aḷindōrnda sindai * nin pāl aḍiyēṛkku * vānulagam

 teḷindē enṛu eyduvadu? * tiruviṇṇagarānē!    

“O Lord of Tiruviṇṇagar! Like the big trees pushed down by the elephants in the hot and humid forest dry out and die, many people have disappeared due to their sinful reactions; (unlike them) my consciousness has been purified by Your remembrance; when will I attain Vaikuṇṭha getting liberated from the material miseries?”    

 

1476 sollāy tirumārvā! * unakkāhit toṇḍu paṭṭa 

 nallēnai * vinaihaḷ naliyāmai * nambu nambī **

 mallā! kuḍamāḍī! * madhusūdanē! * ulagil

 sellā nallisaiyāy! * tiruviṇṇagarānē!      

“O Lord of Tiruviṇṇagar! O mighty one! O pot dancer! O Madhusūdanā! O one with glories unheard of in the world! O Absolute Truth! O one whose chest is the abode of Śrī-lakṣmī! Please favour me; kindly protect this dedicated servant from sinful reactions.”  

 

1477 * tārār malark kamalat * taḍam sūḻnda taṇ puṛavil *

 sīrār neḍumaṛuhil * tiruviṇṇagarānai **

 kārār puyal taḍakkaik * kaliyan oli mālai *

 ārār ivai vallār * avarkku allal nillāvē

“Whoever recites these ten Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who is munificent like the rain clouds and has very long hands—about the Lord eternally residing in Tiruviṇṇagar surrounded by many cool lotus ponds and has opulent, long streets will not be tormented by sinful reactions!”

1478 * kaṇṇum suḻanṛu pīḷaiyōḍu * īḷai vandu ēṅgināl *

 paṇṇin moḻiyār * paiya naḍamin ennāda mun **

 viṇṇum malaiyum * vedamum vēḷviyum āyinān *

 naṇṇu naṛaiyūr * nām toḻudum eḻu neñjamē!   

“O my heart! Before the eyes, covered with discharge, roll (in exhaustion), the throat is blocked with phlegm, and the body is weakened, and the sweet-voiced women caution (mockingly), ‘Please walk slowly,’ come, let us (go and) worship the Lord, who has expanded as the sky, the mountains, the Vedas, and the yajñās, in His favourite abode, Tirunaṛaiyūr.”

 

1479 koṅguṇ kuḻalār * kūḍi irundu sirittu * nīr

 iṅgen? irumi * empāl vandadenṛu ihaḻāda mun **

 tiṅgaḷ eri kāl * señjuḍarāyavan tēsuḍai *

 naṅgaḷ naṛaiyūr * nām toḻudum eḻu neñjamē!   

“O my heart! Before the gathering of the fragrant-haired women mocks and asks, ‘Why have you come to us (and that too) with this cough?’ come, let us (go and) worship the Lord, who has expanded as the moon, Agni, the wind, and the sun, in Tirunaṛaiyūr, our famous shelter.”

 

1480 koṅgār kuḻalār * kūḍi irundu sirittu * emmai

 eṅgkōlam aiyā! * en? inik kāṇbadu ennāda mun **

seṅgōl valavan * tān paṇindu ēttit tihaḻumūr *

 naṅgōn naṛaiyūr * nām toḻudum eḻu neñjamē!   

“O my heart! Before the gathering of women with their hair decorated by honey-filled flowers mocks and asks, ‘O old man! When you are old, why have you come to look at us and our decoration?’ come, let us (go and) worship the Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr, protected and worshipped by the Chōḻa king (Seṅgkaṇāṇ Kōchōḻan).”

 

1481 kombum aravamum * valliyum venṛa nuṇṇēriḍai *

 vambuṇ kuḻalār * vāsal aḍaittu igaḻāda mun **

 sempon kamuhinam tān * kaniyum seḻum cōlai sūḻ *

 namban naṛaiyūr * nām toḻudum eḻu neñjamē!    

“O my heart! Before women with hips slenderer than the common rattan plant, a serpent, or a tender creeper and fragrant hair, insult by closing the door, come, let us (go and) worship the Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by fertile groves where the betel nut trees are laden with many golden-hued bunches of fruits.”  

 

1482 vilaṅgum kayalum * vēlum oṇ kāviyum venṛa kaṇ *

 calam koṇḍa sollār tāṅgaḷ * sirittu ihaḻāda mun **

 malaṅgum varālum * vāḷaiyum pāy vayal sūḻ taru *

 nalaṅgkoḷ naṛaiyūr * nām toḻudum eḻu neñjamē!   

“O my heart! Before women with eyes that have defeated the doe, the fish, the spear, and the lovely red lotus and enticing speech mock and insult, come, let us (go and) worship the Lord in the auspicious Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by fields where many varieties of fish like veraval), common snakehead), belt fish etc.,”    

 

1483 minnēr iḍaiyār * vēṭkaiyai māṭṛi irundu *

 en nīr irumi * empāl vandadu? enṛu igaḻāda mun **

 tonnīr ilaṅgai malaṅga * vilaṅgeri ūṭṭinān *

 nannīr naṛaiyūr * nām toḻudum eḻu neñjamē!    

“O my heart! Before women with slender hips and who were loving earlier, mock and insult asking, ‘Why did you come to us coughing?’ come, let us (go and) worship the Lord in water-rich Tirunaṛaiyūr who caused great distress to (the asuras of) Laṅkā, surrounded by ocean, by burning it by Hanumān.”

 

1484 villēr nudalār * vēṭkaiyai māṭṛic cirittu * ivan

 pollān tiraindān ennum * puṛanuṛai kēṭpadan mun **

 sollār maṛai nāṅgkōdi * ulagil nilāyavar *

 nallār naṛaiyūr * nām toḻudum eḻu neñjamē!      

“O my heart! Before women with bow-like foreheads and who were loving earlier, mock saying insulting words like, ‘This old man is a rascal; now he has wilted’ come, let us (go and) worship the Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr the abode of meritorious Vedic scholars who chant the sacred Vedas and teach to others.”

“O my heart! Before women with sword-like eyes who once called, ‘O cupid,’ mock saying (to other women), ‘Ask this coughing old man why he has come here?’ come, let us (go and) worship the Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr where (temple) festivities and sacrifices are performed daily.”

 

1486 kani sērndu ilaṅgu nal vāyavar * kādanmai viṭṭiḍa *

 kuni sērnduḍalam * kōlil taḷarndu iḷaiyāda mun **

 pani sēr visumbil * pāl madi kōḷ viḍuttān iḍam *

“O my heart! Before women with lips reddish like the scarlet gourd fruit lose their interest looking at the hunched and weakened body and the walking stick, come, let us (go and) worship the Lord, who relieved the curse on the cool moon,  in the glorious abode of Tirunaṛaiyūr.”

 naṛai sēr poḻil sūḻ * naṛaiyūr toḻu neñjamē! enṛa **

 kaṛaiyār neḍu vēl maṅgaiyar kōn * kalikanṛi sol *

“Thos who recite these auspicious songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who is the chief of Tirumaṅgai and possesses a long, blood-stained spear—advising, ‘O heart! Go and worship the Lord in Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by groves with honey-filled flowers before the women with foreheads like crescent moon reject us (due to old age)’ will associate with the eternally liberated.”

1488 * kalaṅga munnīr kaḍaindu * amudam koṇḍu * imaiyōr

 valaṅgai āḻi iḍaṅgaic caṅgam * uḍaiyānūr *

“The abode of the Lord—who agitated and churned the ocean to bring out the ambrosia and gave it to the agitated demigods; who is the brahma-jyotir; who wields the disc in His right hand and the conch in the left—is Tirunaṛaiyūr where meritorious brāhmaṇas reside.”

 

1489 munaiyār sīyamāhi * avuṇan muraṇ mārvam *

 punai vāḷ ugirāl * pōḻpaḍa īrnda punidanūr **

 sinaiyār tēmāñ * centaḷir kōdik kuyil kūvum *

 nanaiyār sōlai sūḻndu * aḻagāya naṛaiyūrē     

“The abode of the fierce Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva—who cleaved the strong chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu with His sharp, luminous nails; who is the purest—is the beautiful Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by gardens with many flowering plants and mango trees laden with sweet fruits and red tender sprouts.”

 

1490 ānaip puravi * tēroḍu kālāḷ aṇi koṇḍa *

 sēnait togaiyaic cāḍi * ilaṅgai seṭṛānūr **

 mīnait taḻuvi vīḻndu eḻum * maḷḷarkku alamandu *

 nānap pudalil * āmai oḷikkum naṛaiyūrē    

“The abode of the Lord—who destroyed the huge army consisting of elephants, horses, chariots, and asuras and devastated Laṅkā—is the beautiful Tirunaṛaiyūr where in the fields the farmers who try to catch fish with both hands, lose the balance, and fall down and again get up and the tortoises get afraid and hide in the kans grass bushes.”

 

1491 uṛiyār veṇṇey uṇḍu * uralōḍum kaṭṭuṇḍu *

 veṛiyār kūndal * pinnai poruṭṭu ān venṛānūr **

 poṛiyār maññjai * pūmpoḻil tōṛum naḍamāḍa *

“The abode of the Lord—who swallowed butter stored in the pots in the rope hangars and so was tied to the mortar (as a punishment); and who tamed the seven demoniac bulls to win the hand of fragrant-haired Nappinnai—is the beautiful Tirunaṛaiyūr where lovely peacocks dance in the groves and the bumblebees, perched on the just blossomed flowers, hum.”   

 

1492 viḍai ēḻ venṛu * mentōḷ āyccikku anbanāy *

 naḍaiyāl ninṛa * marudam sāytta nādanūr **

 peḍaiyōḍu annam * peyvaḷaiyār tam pin senṛu *

“The abode of the Lord—who tamed the seven demoniac bulls and became the husband of the slender-shouldered Nappinnai; and who crawled in between and brought down the twin arjuna trees—is the beautiful Tirunaṛaiyūr where pairs of swans walk behind the damsels, with elegant bangles decorating their hands, trying to imitate their walk, and (unable to do so) hide in shame.”

 

1493 paguvāy vanpēy * koṅgai suvaittu āruyir uṇḍu *

 puguvāy ninṛa * pōdagam vīḻap porudānūr **

 neguvāy neydal * pūmadu māndik kamalattin *

 naguvāy malar mēl * annam uṛaṅgum naṛaiyūrē    

“The abode of the Lord—who sucked the breast and killed Pūtanā, the evil demon with a big gaping mouth; and who killed the huge, demoniac elephant at the entrance of Mathurā—is the beautiful Tirunaṛaiyūr where the swans, after drinking honey from the big blue lotus flowers, slept in the large lotus flowers.”

“The abode of the Lord—who brought back (as guru-dakṣiṇā) the dead son of His guru (Sāndīpani Muni) who gave Him the sacred thread and the Vedic knowledge—is the beautiful Tirunaṛaiyūr where the birds fly down to the clear-watered lakes to gather the snails to feed their baby birds in the nests on the trees.”

“The abode of the blemishless Lord—who drove the chariot of Arjuna, pulled by white horses, and helped to destroy the huge army of the Kauravas and kill the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha)—is the beautiful Tirunaṛaiyūr where the male cranes, which after feasting on fat fish enjoy drinking, along with the female cranes, the honey from the lotus flowers.”

“The abode of the Supreme Personality of Godhead—who drove the chariot of Arjuna and (orchestrating the Mahābhārata war) reduced the burden of the earth—is the beautiful Tirunaṛaiyūr which is surrounded by fertile fields encircled by hedgerow of plants with sprouts dripping honey and where cranes wander.”

 

1497 * tāmat tuḷaba * nīḷ muḍi māyan tān ninṛa *

 nāmat tiraḷ māmāḷigai sūḻnda * naṛaiyūr mēl **

 kāmak kadir vēl vallān * kaliyan oli mālai *

“Those who can recite these auspicious songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who is an expert wielder of a dazzling spear—about Tirunaṛaiyūr which is surrounded by many glorious and large palaces and is the permanent abode of the incredible Lord whose head is adorned with a garland of tulasī leaves will always be protected by the consort of Śrī-lakṣmī.”

1498 * ambaramum perunilanum tisaihaḷ eṭṭum * alaikaḍalum kulavaraiyum uṇḍa kaṇḍan *

 kombamarum vaḍa marattin ilai mēl * paḷḷi kūḍinān tiruvaḍiyē kūḍagiṛpīr! **

“O devotees who desire to attain the lotus feet of the Lord—who swallowed the sky, the vast earth, the eight directions, the oceans, and the mountains; and who reclined on the tender leaf of a banyan tree—please go to the temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr where bumblebees which after enjoying the honey from the fragrant champak flowers just blossomed, sit on the Spanish cherry flowers;[1] and which was worshipped by Sembian Kōcceṅgaṇān (a cōḷa king).”

 

1499 koḻuṅgayalāy neḍu veḷḷam koṇḍa kālam * kulavaraiyin mīdōḍi aṇḍattappāl *

 eḻundu inidu viḷaiyāḍum īsan endai * iṇaiyaḍik kīḻ inidu iruppīr! inavaṇḍālum **

 uḻum seṛuvil maṇi koṇarndu karai mēl sindi * ulagellām candanamum agilum koḷḷa *

 seḻum ponni vaḷaṅgoḍukkum cōḻan sērnda * tirunaṛaiyūr maṇimāḍam sērmiṅaḷē        

“O devotees who desire to live happily under the shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord—who exhibited the sweet pastime of roaming around (dragging the boat carrying the Manu named King Satyavrata and the scriptures) and going above the seven mountains and touching the end of the universe—please go to the temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr where the river Kāverī, swarmed by bumblebees, brings gems and dumps them on the borders of the fertile fields, and also sandalwood and agarwood which are collected by the people;  and which (the temple) was repaired by Sembian Kōcceṅgaṇān.”

 

1500 pavva nīruḍai āḍaiyāhac cuṭṛip * pāragalam tiruvaḍiyāp pavanam meyyā *

 sevvi mādiram eṭṭum tōḷā * aṇḍam tirumuḍiyā ninṛān pāl sellagiṛpīr **

 kavvai mākaḷiṛu undi veṇṇiyēṭṛa * kaḻal mannar maṇi muḍi mēl kāgam ēṛa *

 deyva vāḷ valam koṇḍa cōḻan sērnda * tirunaṛaiyūr maṇimāḍam sērmiṅaḷē     

“O devotees who desire to live happily under the shelter of the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord—who has the ocean water as the clothing around His lower half of the body, the earth as His lotus feet, the air as the body, the eight directions as His shoulders, and the universe as His head—please go to the temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr which was repaired by the cōḷa king who wielding his divine-powered sword cut off the heads of the enemy kings who came on mighty elephants to fight in Veṇṇi and which (the heads) were eaten by the crows.”[2]

 veṅgkaṇ mākaḷiṛu undi veṇṇiyēṭṛa * viṛal mannar tiṛal aḻiya vemmā uytta *

 ceṅgaṇān kōccōḻan sērnda kōyil * tirunaṛaiyūr maṇimāḍam sērmiṅaḷē     

“O devotees who desire to take shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord—who took the form of a fierce-looking Nṛsiṁhadeva, caught hold of the mighty-shouldered Hiraṇyakaśipu who was arrogant because of the boons obtained, and with the sharp and effulgent nails in His beautiful hands tore off his chest making the blood gush out—please go to the temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr which was worshipped by the cōḷa king Kōcceṅgaṇān who led an army of powerful horses and defeated the valiant enemy kings who came on mighty elephants to fight in Veṇṇi.”

 

1502 anṛu ulaga mūnṛinaiyum aḷandu * vēṛōr ari uruvāy iraṇiyanadu āgam kīṇḍu *

 venṛu avanai viṇṇulagil sela uyttāṛku * virundāvīr! mēleḻundu vilaṅgal pāyndu **

 pon sidaṛi maṇi koṇarndu karai mēl sindip * pulam parandu nilam parakkum ponni nāḍan *

 ten tamiḻan vaḍapulak kōn cōḻan sērnda * tirunaṛaiyūr maṇimāḍam sērmiṅaḷē     

“O devotees who desire to be the guests of the Lord—who measured and regained all the planetary systems (as Trivikrama); and who took the form of a fierce-looking Nṛsiṁhadeva and split the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu and sent him to the heaven—please go to the temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr which was worshipped by the cōḷa king—who was the chief of the country which was nourished by the river Kāverī rushing down breaking the hills on the way, throwing gold all around, bringing and dumping gems on the banks and spreading throughout the country—the king of Tamiḻ Nādu in the south and the country in the north also.”

 

1503 tannālē tannuruvam payanda tānāyt * tayaṅgoḷi sēr mūvulagum tānāy vānāy *

 tannālē tānuruvin mūrti mūnṛāyt * tānāyan āyinān caraṇ enṛu uyvīr! **

 minnāḍu vēlēndu viḷainda vēḷai * viṇṇēṛat tani vēl uyttu ulagam āṇḍa *

 tennāḍan kuḍakoṅgan cōḻan sērnda * tirunaṛaiyūr maṇimāḍam sērmiṅaḷē    

“O devotees who desire to take shelter of the Lord—who has no origin; who is sat-cit-ānanda vigraha; who is the cause of all the cosmic creation; who is the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha; who expanded as the Trinity (Viṣṇu, Brahmā and Śiva); and who appeared as Gopāla Kṛṣṇa—please go to the temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr which was worshipped by the cōḷa king who threw his unique spear on a king called Viḷaindavēḷ who was wielding a powerful spear and killed him; who was the king of Tamiḻ Nādu in the south and was the ruler of the Koṅgu country in the west also.”

 ilait taḍatta kuḻalūdi āyar mādar * inavaḷai koṇḍān aḍik kīḻ eydagiṛpīr! **

“O devotees who desire to take shelter under the lotus feet of the Lord—who sucked the poison laced nipple of the demon Pūtanā and killed her; who was the king of the ancient city of Dwārakā; who grazed the cows playing the flute made of a big leaf; who stole the bangles of the young cowherd damsels—please go to the temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr which was worshipped by the glorious cōḷa king who was the chief of the country which was nourished by the lovely river Kāverī which brings and dumps gems on the banks for the benefit of all and who was wielding a bow in his powerful hand.”

 

1505 murukkilaṅgu kanittuvarvāyp pinnai kēḷvan * mannellām mun aviyac cenṛu * venṛic

 cerukkaḷattut tiṛal aḻiyac ceṭṛa vēndan * siram tuṇittān tiruvaḍi num senni vaippīr! **

 irukkilaṅgu tirumoḻi vāy eṇtōḷ īsaṛku * eḻil māḍam eḻupadu seydu ulagamāṇḍa *

 tirukkulattu vaḷaccōḻan sērnda kōyil * tirunaṛaiyūr maṇimāḍam sērmiṅaḷē     

“O devotees who desire to keep the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord on their heads—who is the husband of Nappinnai whose lips are reddish like the flame-of-the-forest flower and ivy gourd fruit; who (as Parasurāma) killed (twenty-one generations of) kṣatriyas; and who cut off the head of the arrogant Kārtavīryārjuna on the battlefield[3]—please go to the temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr which was worshipped by the cōḷa king who always recited special prayers in the Vedas like Puruṣa-sūkta; who built seventy beautiful temples for the eight-armed Śiva; who was born in a royal family and was opulent.”

1506 tārāḷan taṇṇaraṅga vāḷan * pūmēl taniyāḷan muniyāḷar ētta ninṛa

pērāḷan * āyiram pēruḍaiya vāḷan * pinnaikku maṇavāḷan perumai kēṭpīr! **

 pārāḷar ivarivar enṛu aḻundai ēṭṛa * paḍai mannar uḍal tuṇiyap parimā uytta *

 tērāḷan kōccōḻan sērnda kōyil * tirunaṛaiyūr maṇimāḍam sērmiṅaḷē     

“O devotees who desire to hear the glories of the Lord—who is adorned with a garland; who is the Lord of Śrīraṅgam; who is the consort of Lakṣmī born on a lotus; whose glories are sung by the saints; who has a thousand names; who is the husband of Nappinnai—please go to the temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr which was worshipped by the cōḷa king Kōcceṅgaṇān who is an expert fighter on a chariot and who led an army of powerful horses and killed the valiant and very popular enemy kings who came to fight in Tiruvaḻundūr.”[4]

 vemmoḻi kēṭṭu añjādē meymmai sollil * viṇṇavarkku virundāhum perundakkōrē           

“It is a fact that those, in this vast earth, who can recite these sweet songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who is a very truthful poet; who is the chief of Tirumaṅgai; and who is an expert reciter of the transcendental scriptures—about Lord Puṇḍarīkākṣa present in Tirunaṛaiyūr which is the residence of Vaiṣṇavas who are truthful and experts in reciting the Vedas need not face the fearsome situation of listening to the harsh words in Yamaloka but instead will (go to Vaikuṇṭha and) be praised by the eternal associates of the Lord.”

“The Lord who accepted me as His devotee and eternal servant and who shot arrows from His deadly bow and cut off the arms and the heads of the asuras who challenged Him is the Lord whose eternal abode is Tirunaṛaiyūr which has streets with the houses of men as beautiful as the cupid and (the demigod) Kārtikeya and women with lovely eyes like the spear and where there is the sound of festivities, all around the year.”

“The Lord who appeared as Paraśurāma and slashed the bodies and cut off the heads of twenty-one generations of the kṣatriyas with His unique and sharp axe and who is adorned with a garland is the Lord who is in a standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr where in the various vast groves, in some places there are blossoms of sparkling jasmine flowers which resemble the teeth of the women there; in some other places there are blossoms of dark blue lily flowers which resemble the eyes of those women; and somewhere else there are blossoms of many lotus flowers resembling the face of those women.”   

 

1510 teḷḷār kaḍalvāy viḍavāya * sinavāḷ aravil tuyil amarndu *

 tuḷḷā varu mān vīḻa * vāḷi turandān irandān māvali maṇ **

“The Lord who, in the Ocean of Milk, is reclining on the effulgent Ananta Śeṣa who is angry and spitting venom on the enemies; who shot an arrow killing the magic deer which came prancing; and who begged the planets from king Bali is the Lord who is in a standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr where in the many vast groves full of birds, there are blossoms of elegant red lotus flowers which resemble the elegant eyes of the lovely women there and blossoms of many beautiful lotus flowers resembling the face of those women.”

“The Lord who was tied to a mortar by Mother Yaśodā for stealing butter and was crying incessantly is the Lord who is in a standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr where the bumblebees enjoy drinking homey from fresh flowers, the flowers are thrown all around by the cool breeze, and it seems that the soft jasmine flowers smile brightly.”    

 

1512 villār viḻavil vaḍamadurai * virumbi virumbā mallaḍarttu *

 kallār tiraḷ tōḷ kañjanaik kāyndān * pāyndān kāḷiyan mēl **

 sollār surudi muṛaiyōdic * cōmuc ceyyum toḻilinōr *

“The Lord who willingly went to attend the bow sacrifice in Mathurā killed the wrestlers and also Kaṁsa who had mountain-like mighty shoulders, and who jumped on the hoods of the serpent Kāliya and subdued him is the Lord who is in a standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr which is the residence of many Vedic scholars who chant the sacred Vedas properly and perform sacrifices like the soma-yajña.”

 

1513 vaḷḷi koḻunan mudalāya * makkaḷōḍu mukkaṇān 

 veḷgi ōḍa * viṛal vāṇan * viyantōḷ vanattait tuṇittu ugandān **

 paḷḷi kamalattu iḍaippaṭṭa * paguvāy alavan mugam nōkki *

 naḷḷiyūḍum vayal sūḻnda * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambiyē   

“The Lord who defeated and made the three-eyed Rudra and his sons including Kārtikeya, the husband of Vaḷḷi, run away in shame and cut off the vast forest-like shoulders of the powerful Bāṇāsura is the Lord who is in a standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr which is surrounded by fields where when the large-mouthed male crab, which was caught in a lotus flower which closed at sunset, returned to its hole next day morning, looking at its face and body smeared with the pollen dust, the female crab became angry and shunned it (thinking that it had slept with another female crab).”[1]

 paḍaiyān ** vedam nāṅgu aindu vēḷvi * aṅgam āṛu isai ēḻ *

 naḍaiyā valla andaṇar vāḻ * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambiyē     

“The Lord who drove the chariot of Arjuna and ensured the destruction of the huge army of men wielding spears, who protected the cowherd men by lifting and holding the Govardhana Hills as an umbrella, and who wields the sharp disc is in a standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr where Vedic scholars who keep chanting the four Vedas, the six Vedāṅgas, the seven music notes and keep performing the pañca-mahā-yajña reside.”

 

1515 pandār viralāḷ pāñjāli * kūndal muḍikkap bhāradattu *

 kandār kaḷiṭṛuk kaḻal mannar kalaṅgkac * caṅgam vāy vaittān **

 cendāmarai mēl ayanōḍu * sivanum anaiya perumaiyōr *

 nandā vaṇkai maṛaiyōr vāḻ * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambiyē     

“The Lord, who on the battlefield, blew the conch terrifying the Kauravas and their friendly kings mounted on strong elephants (and ensured their destruction) so that Draupadī could tie up her hair, is in a standing position in Tirunaṛaiyūr where Vedic brāhmaṇas, who are as glorious and powerful as Brahmā and Rudra, live.”

 

1516 āṛum piṛaiyum aravamum * aḍambum saḍai mēl aṇindu * uḍalam 

 nīṛum pūsi ēṛūrum * iṛaiyōn senṛu kuṛai irappa **

 māṛu onṛillā vāsa nīr * varai mārbagalattu aḷittu ugandān *

 nāṛum poḻil sūḻndu aḻagāya * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambiyē

“The Lord, who mercifully gave the unique fragrant sweat from His mountain-like chest to remove the curse on Śiva, who wears the river Ganges, the crescent moon, serpents, and fish poison tree flower on his matted hair, whose body is smeared with ash, and who travels on a bull is in a standing position in the beautiful Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by fragrant groves.”[2]

 

1517 * nanmai uḍaiya maṛaiyōr vāḻ * naṛaiyūr ninṛa nambiyai *

 kanni madiḷ sūḻ vayal maṅgaik * kaliyan oli sey tamiḻ mālai **

 panni ulagil pāḍuvār * pāḍu sārā paḻa vinaigaḷ *

 manni ulagam āṇḍu pōy * vānōr vaṇaṅga vāḻvārē

“Those who can realise and recite these sweet Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who is the chief of Tirumaṅgai surrounded by eternal ramparts and fields—about the Lord eternally present in Tirunaṛaiyūr, where meritorious Vedic scholars reside, will not suffer from past sinful reactions, will live for a long time ruling this world and then go to Vaikuṇṭha and associate with the eternal associates of the Lord.”

 nān senṛu nāḍi * naṛaiyūril kaṇḍēnē       

“I searched and worshipped the Lord—who appeared as the glorious dwarf brahmacārī whose chest was covered by deerskin who begged the planetary systems from king Bali, then measured (with his feet) and claimed them; who is present on the Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills which has many nectar-rich groves on its slopes—in Tirunaṛaiyūr.”  

 

1519 munnīrai munnāḷ * kaḍaindānai * mūḻtta nāḷ 

 annīrai mīnāy * amaitta perumānai **

 tennāli mēya * tirumālai emmānai *

nannīr vayal sūḻ * naṛaiyūril kaṇḍēnē           

“I worshipped the Lord—who once churned the ocean; who appeared as the glorious Matsya, (fish incarnation) and conquered the pralaya waters; who is the consort of Lakṣmī and eternally resides in the lovely city of Tiruvāli—in Tirunaṛaiyūr.”  

 

1520 tūvāya puḷ ūrndu * vandu tuṛai vēḻam *

 mūvāmai nalhi * mudalai tuṇittānai **

 devādi devanaic * ceṅgamalak kaṇṇānai *

 nāvāyuḷānai * naṛaiyūril kaṇḍēnē        

“I worshipped Lord Puṇḍarīkākṣa—who travelled on Garuḍa, who chants constantly the sacred Vedic hymns, and relieved the distress of the king of elephants by cutting off the crocodile into two halves; who is the chief of the demigods; and who resides in Tirunāvāy[1]—in Tirunaṛaiyūr.”  

 

1521 ōḍā ariyāy * iraṇiyanai ūn iḍanda *

 sēḍār poḻil sūḻ * tirunīrmalaiyānai **

 vāḍā malart tuḻāy * mālai muḍiyānai *

 nāḷ tōṛum nāḍi * naṛaiyūril kaṇḍēnē       

“I searched and worshipped the Lord—who appeared as the undaunted Nṛsiṁhadeva and split the body of Hiraṇyakaśipu; who resides in Tirunīrmalai surrounded by fertile groves; and whose head is adorned with a garland of ever-fresh tulasī leaves—in Tirunaṛaiyūr.”  

 

1522 kallār madiḷ sūḻ * kaḍi ilaṅgaik kār arakkan *

 vallāgam kīḷa * vari veñjaram turanda 

 villānai ** selva vibīḍaṇaṛku * vēṛāha *

 nallānai nāḍi * naṛaiyūril kaṇḍēnē        

“I searched and worshipped the Lord—who shot deadly arrows from His bow to kill the arrogant and evil Rāvaṇa of Laṅkā surrounded by ramparts built with stones; who was merciful to Vibhīṣaṇa who left his opulence and surrendered (to Rāma)—in Tirunaṛaiyūr.”  

 

1523 umbar ulagōḍu * uyir ellām undiyil *

 vambu malar mēl * paḍaittānai māyōnai **

 ambanna kaṇṇāḷ * asōdai tan siṅgattai *

 nambanai nāḍi * naṛaiyūril kaṇḍēnē        

“I searched and worshipped the Lord—who created the celestial and the earthly planets with all the living beings in the fragrant lotus flower stem sprouted from His naval; who possesses incredibly auspicious qualities and actions; who is the lion cub of Mother Yaśodā whose eyes are like an arrow; and who is the ultimate shelter for the faithful—in Tirunaṛaiyūr.”  

 

1524 kaṭṭēṛu nīḷ sōlaik * kāṇḍavattait tīmūṭṭi 

 viṭṭānai * meyyam amarnda perumānai **

 maṭṭēṛu kaṛpagattai * mādarkkāy * vaṇ tuvarai 

 naṭṭānai nāḍi * naṛaiyūril kaṇḍēnē       

“I searched and worshipped the Lord—who permitted Agni to burn the vast Khāṇḍava forest with many dense groves; who resides in Tirumeyyam; and who uprooted the nectar-rich kalpavṛkṣa tree (from heaven) and planted in Dwārakā as wanted by Satyabhāmā—in Tirunaṛaiyūr.”  

 

1525 maṇṇin mī bāram keḍuppān * maṛa mannar *

 paṇṇin mēl vanda * paḍai ellām bhāradattu **

 viṇṇin mīdēṛa * visayan tēr ūrndānai *

 naṇṇi nān nāḍi * naṛaiyūril kaṇḍēnē      

I searched keenly and worshipped the Lord—who orchestrated the Mahābhārata war to reduce the burden of the earth and drove the chariot of Arjuna to eliminate all the kings and their huge armies—in Tirunaṛaiyūr.”  

 

1526 * poṅgēṛu nīḷ sōdip * ponnāḻi tannōḍum *

 saṅgēṛu kōlat * taḍakkaip perumānai **

 koṅgēṛu sōlaik * kuḍandaik kiḍandānai *

 naṅgōnai nāḍi * naṛaiyūril kaṇḍēnē       

I searched and worshipped our Lord—who wields the ever increasingly luminant disc and conch in His hands and who reclines in Kumbakōṇam surrounded by nectar-rich groves—in Tirunaṛaiyūr.”  

 

1527 * mannu madurai * vasudevar vāḻ mudalai *

 nannaṛaiyūr ninṛa nambiyai ** vambaviḻtārk

 kannavilum tōḷān * kaliyan oli vallār *

 ponnulagil vānavarkkup * puttēḷir āhuvarē

“Those who can recite these sweet Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who has mountain-like shoulders and is adorned with a fragrant garland—about the Lord who appeared as the favourite child of Vasudeva in the divine Mathurā and who is eternally present in Tirunaṛaiyūr, will go to Vaikuṇṭha and become the  most celebrated among the eternal associates of the Lord.”

“O heart! Attain the lotus feet of the Lord who relived the curse of Śiva with matted hair who roamed all over the three planetary systems; who is the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī; and who resides in Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by fertile fields where the elegant male swan always accompanied by the female swan sips the honey from the depetaled lotus flowers.”

 

1529 kaḻiyārum kanasaṅgam * kalandu eṅgum niṛaindēṛi *

 vaḻiyāra muttīnṛu * vaḷaṅgoḍukkum tirunaṛaiyūr **

 paḻiyārum viṛal arakkan * parumuḍihaḷ avai sidaṛa *

 aḻalāṛum saram turandān * aḍiyiṇaiyē aḍai neñjē!   

“O heart! Attain the lotus feet of the Lord who shot fiery arrows and cut off the ten heads of the evil and powerful Rāvaṇa and who resides in Tirunaṛaiyūr which is very rich because of the heaps of pearls released by the rows and rows of bulky oysters brought from the salt fields and dumped in the streets (by the river Kāverī).”

 

1530 suḷai koṇḍa palaṅgkanihaḷ * tēn pāya kadalihaḷin *

 tiḷai koṇḍa paḻam keḻumu * tigaḻ sōlait tirunaṛaiyūr **

 vaḷai koṇḍa vaṇṇattan * pin tōnṛal * mūvulagōḍu

 aḷai veṇṇey uṇḍān tan * aḍiyiṇaiyē aḍai neñjē!   

“O heart! Attain the lotus feet of the Lord who is the younger brother of white conch-hued Balarāma; who swallowed the three planetary systems and curd and butter; and who resides in Tirunaṛaiyūr which has many groves where nectar oozes from many bulky jackfruits and the plantain trees are full of fat banana clusters.”  

 

1531 tunṛōḷit tuhiṛpaḍalam * tunni eṅgum māḷigai mēl *

 ninṛāra vān mūḍum * nīḷ selvat tirunaṛaiyūr **

 manṛārak kuḍamāḍi * varai eḍuttu maḻai taḍutta *

 kunṛārum tiraḷ tōḷan * kuraikaḻalē aḍai neñjē!   

“O heart! Attain the victorious anklet-adorned lotus feet of the Lord who is an expert pot dancer; who lifted and held the Govardhana Hills to protect from the rains; who has mountainous shoulders and who resides in the opulent Tirunaṛaiyūr where the multitude of festoons hoisted on the palaces fly high and cover the sky.”  

 

 1532 agiṛ kuṛaḍum sandanamum * amponnum aṇimuttum *

 mihak koṇarndu tirai undum * viyan ponnit tirunaṛaiyūr **

 pahal karanda suḍarāḻip paḍaiyān * ivvulagēḻum *

 puhak karanda tiruvayiṭṛan * ponnaḍiyē aḍai neñjē!   

“O heart! Attain the lovely lotus feet of the Lord who wields the fiery disc weapon which covered the sun (during the Mahābhārata war); who swallowed and protected all the planetary systems within His stomach; and who resides in Tirunaṛaiyūr where the wonderful river Kāverī brings and dumps plenty of aguru woods and sandalwoods, pure gold, and lovely pearls.”  

 

1533 ponmuttum ariyugirum * puḻaik kaimmā karikkōḍum *

 minnat taṇ tirai undum * viyan ponnit tirunaṛaiyūr **

 minnotta nuṇmaruṅgul * melliyalai * tirumārbil

 mannat tān vaittugandān * malaraḍiyē aḍai neñjē!  

“O heart! Attain the lovely lotus feet of the Lord who is pleased to keep slender-waisted Śrī-Lakṣmī on His chest; and who resides in Tirunaṛaiyūr where the wonderful river Kāverī brings and dumps glittering gold, pearls, nails of the lions, and tusks of the elephants.”  

 

1534 sīr taḻaitta kadirc cennel * seṅgamalattu iḍaiyiḍaiyin *

 pār taḻaittuk karumbōṅgip * payan viḷaikkum tirunaṛaiyūr **

 kār taḻaitta tiru uruvan * kaṇṇa pirān viṇṇavar kōn *

 tār taḻaitta tuḻāy muḍiyan * taḷiraḍiyē aḍai neñjē!

“O heart! Attain the tender lotus feet of Lord Kaṇṇan who is rain cloud-hued; who is the Lord of the demigods; whose head is adorned with flowers and a garland of tulasī leaves; and who resides in Tirunaṛaiyūr where in the fields between the mature paddy with rich panicules and the lotus plants tall sugarcane plants bent low are grown.”  

   

 1535 * kulaiyārnda paḻukkāyum * pasuṅgāyum pāḷai muttum *

 talaiyārnda iḷaṅgkamugin * taḍañjōlait tirunaṛaiyūr **

 malaiyārnda kōlam sēr * maṇimāḍam miha manni *

 nilaiyāra ninṛān tan * nīḷkaḻalē aḍai neñjē!    

“O heart! Attain the large lotus feet of the Lord who is standing in the lovely mountainous temple in Tirunaṛaiyūr where in the fertile groves there are plenty of betel nut trees with many bunches of ripe fruits, ripening fruits and plates of pearl-like flowers.”  

                                                         

1536 maṛaiyārum peruvēḷvik * koḻum puhai pōy vaḷarndu eṅgum *

 niṛaiyāra vān mūḍum * nīḷselvat tirunaṛaiyūr **

 piṛaiyārum saḍaiyānum * piramanum mun toḻudētta *

 iṛaiyāgi ninṛān tan * iṇaiyaḍiyē aḍai neñjē!    

“O heart! Attain the lotus feet of the Lord who is worshipped by Śiva with matted hair and a crescent moon on it and Brahmā in the opulent Tirunaṛaiyūr where the sacred smoke from the fire sacrifices performed according to Vedic prescriptions spread all over and rise high covering the sky.”  

 

1537 * tiṇ kaḷaga madiḷ puḍai sūḻ * tirunaṛaiyūr ninṛānai *

 vaṇ kaḷaga nilaveṛikkum * vayal maṅgai nagarāḷan **

 paṇ kaḷagam payinṛa sīrp * pāḍal ivai pattum vallār *

 viṇ kaḷagattu imaiyavarāy * vīṭṛirundu vāḻvārē

“Those who can recite these ten perfect songs of the best meter—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who is the chief of Tirumaṅgai which has fertile fields where the swans looking like moon roam around—about the Lord who is present in Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by ramparts fortified with lime, will go to Vaikuṇṭha and live with the eternal associates of the Lord.”

 

1538 * kiḍanda nambi kuḍandai mēvik * kēḻalāy ulagai 

 iḍanda nambi * eṅgaḷ nambi * eṛiñar araṇ aḻiya **

 kaḍanda nambi kaḍiyār ilaṅgai * ulagai īraḍiyāl *

 naḍanda nambi nāmam sollil * namō nārāyaṇamē   

“In fact, the holy name of the Lord, who is in a reclining position in Kumbakōṇam; who appeared as a boar and retrieved the earth from the ocean depth; who is our benefactor; who destroyed the fort of the cruel asuras and devastated the city of Laṅkā; and the Supreme Lord who measured all the planetary systems with just two steps, is Namo Nārāyaṇa.”

 

1539 viḍam tān uḍaiya aravam veruvac * ceruvil muna nāḷ * mun

 taḍam tāmarai nīrp * poygai pukku mikka tāḍāḷan **

 iḍandān vaiyam kēḻalāhi * ulagai īraḍiyāl *

 naḍandān uḍaiya nāmam sollil * namō nārāyaṇamē   

“In fact, the holy name of the Lord, whose lotus feet are glorified for Him having jumped in the lake of big lotus flowers, while the cowherd boys were looking on in great fear, terrifying and taming the poisonous serpent Kālīya; who appeared as a boar and picked up the earth from the ocean depth; and the Supreme Lord who measured all the planetary systems with just two steps, is ‘Namo Nārāyaṇa.”

 

1540 pūṇādu analum * taṛu kaṇ vēḻam maṛuga * vaḷai maruppai 

 pēṇān vāṅgi * amudam koṇḍa perumān tirumārvan **

 pāṇā vaṇḍu muralum kūndal * āycci tayir veṇṇey *

 nāṇādu uṇḍān nāmam sollil * namō nārāyaṇamē   

“In fact, the holy name of the Lord, who easily broke the tusks of the violent elephant (Kuvalayāpīḍa) which was uncontrollable; who churned the ocean to bring out ambrosia; whose chest is the abode of Śrī-Lakṣmī;  and who stole and ate the curd and butter stored by Mother Yaśodā, whose hair is swarmed by humming bees, is ‘Namo Nārāyaṇa.”

1541 kallār madiḷ sūḻ * kacci nagaruḷ naccip * pāḍagattuḷ 

 ellā ulagum vaṇaṅga * irunda ammān ** ilaṅgaik kōn 

 vallāḷ āgam * villāl muninda endai * vibīḍaṇaṛku 

 nallān uḍaiya nāmam sollil * namō nārāyaṇamē        

“In fact, the holy name of the Lord, who wanted to reside in Kāṇcīpuram which is surrounded by walls of strong stones, and so sat in Tiruppāḍagam worshipped by all the lokās; who killed the strong Rāvaṇa, the king of Laṅkā with His mighty bow; and who was merciful to Vibhīṣaṇa, is ‘Namo Nārāyaṇa.”[1]

 

1542 kuḍaiyā varaiyāl * nirai mun kātta perumān * maruvāda 

 viḍai tān ēḻum venṛān * kōval ninṛān ** tennilaṅgai 

 aḍaiyā arakkar vīyap porudu * mēvi veṅgkūṭṛam *

 naḍaiyā uṇṇak kaṇḍān nāmam * namō nārāyaṇamē       

“In fact, the holy name of the Lord, who wanted to reside in Kāṇcīpuram which is surrounded by walls of strong stones, and so sat in Tiruppāḍagam worshipped by all the lokās; who killed the strong Rāvaṇa, the king of Laṅkā with His mighty bow; and who was merciful to Vibhīṣaṇa, is ‘Namo Nārāyaṇa.”

 

1543 kāna eṇgum kuraṅgum * musuvum paḍaiyā * aḍal arakkar 

 mānam aḻittu ninṛa * venṛi ammān ** enakku enṛum 

 tēnum pālum amudumāya * tirumāl tirunāmam *

 nānum sonnēn namarum uraimin * namō nārāyaṇamē      

“The holy name Namo Nārāyaṇa of the victorious Lord—who annihilated the evil asuras with an army of wild bears, and varieties of monkeys—is like honey, milk, and ambrosia to me; I chant the holy name and request all my associates to chant too.”

 

1544 ninṛa varaiyum kiḍanda kaḍalum * tisaiyum irunilanum *

 onṛum oḻiyā vaṇṇam * eṇṇi ninṛa ammānār **

 kunṛu kuḍaiyā eḍutta * aḍihaḷuḍaiya tirunāmam *

 nanṛu kāṇmin toṇḍīr! sonnēn * namō nārāyaṇamē      

The holy name of the Lord—who protects the seven mountains, the seven seas, the directions, the earth and more (pralaya after pralaya), and who held the Govardhana Hills as an umbrella—is Namo Nārāyaṇa. O devotees! Please chant the holy name as I do attentively.”  

 

1545 kaḍuṅgāl māri kallē poḻiya * allē emakkenṛu 

 paḍuṅgāl * nīyē saraṇ enṛu * āyar añja añjā mun **

 neḍuṅgāl kunṛam kuḍai onṛēndi * niraiyaic ciramattāl *

 naḍuṅgā vaṇṇam kāttān nāmam * namō nārāyaṇamē      

“The holy name of the Lord—who, when the terrified cowherd men came running to Him and took shelter of Him, protected the herds of cows from the misery of torrential rains associated with the forceful wind by holding the Govardhana Hills as an umbrella—is Namo Nārāyaṇa.

 

1546 poṅgu puṇarik kaḍal sūḻ āḍai * nilamā magaḷ malarmā 

 maṅgai * piraman sivan indiran * vānavar nāyaharāya **

 eṅgaḷ aḍigaḷ imaiyōr * talaivar uḍaiya tirunāmam *

 naṅgaḷ vinaihaḷ tavira uraimin * namō nārāyaṇamē       

“The holy name of the Lord—who is the Lord of the lotus-born Śrī-Lakṣmī who has the ocean as her dress, Brahmā, Śiva, Indra, and all the other demigods; who is our master and the Lord of the eternal associates—is Namo Nārāyaṇa. Chant the holy name to get rid of your sinful reactions.”

 

 

1547 * vāvit taḍam sūḻ maṇi muttāṭṛu * naṛaiyūr neḍumālai *

 nāvil paravi neñjil koṇḍu * nambi nāmattai **

 kāvit taḍaṅgaṇ maḍavār kēḷvan * kaliyan oli mālai *

 mēvic colla vallār pāvam * nillā vīyumē

“Those who can devotedly recite these ten perfect songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who was liked by ladies with wide eyes like the blue water lily—glorifying and meditating upon the Lord who is present in Tirunaṛaiyūr surrounded by lakes, ponds and the river Maṇi Muttāṛu, will be rid of their sinful reactions.”
