           naṛiya malar mēl surumbārkka * eḻilār maññai naḍamāḍa *

          poṛi koḷ siṛai vaṇḍu isai pāḍum * puḷḷam bhūtaṅguḍi tānē                                                                                                        

“The eternal abode of the Lord—who is beyond understanding (by one’s own effort); who is the Lord of both the material and spiritual worlds; who is the master of this servant; who as Vāmana made an effulgent presence (in the sacrificial arena of Bali)—is Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi where in the groves of fragrant flowers the bees and the bumblebees constantly hum and elegant peacocks dance.”[1]

 poḷḷaik karatta pōdagattin * tunbam tavirtta punidaniḍam **

“The eternal abode of the Lord—who as the clever Vāmana cheated Bali and obtained all the planetary systems; who relieved the distress of the king elephant; who is the purest—is Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi where in the deep fields the fish frolic and the birds enter the water-filled fields to catch small fish for feeding their young ones.”

 māvāy piḷandu mallaḍarttu * marudam sāytta māladiḍam **

“The eternal abode of the Lord—who shot arrows to end the life of Rāvaṇa, the chief of the envious Rākṣasas of Laṅkā; who killed Keśī, the horse demon, by ripping open its mouth; who brought down the twin arjuna trees—is the elegant Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi where the fish jump in fear and swim away and the white storks scatter away when the coconut fruits fall down from the trees near the fields filled with lotus flowers.”

 vaṛpār tiraḷ tōḷ ainnāṅum * tuṇitta valvil irāmaniḍam **

 kaṛpār purisai seykunṛam * kavinār kūḍam māḷigaihaḷ *

 poṛpār māḍam eḻilārum * puḷḷam bhūtaṅguḍi tānē  

“The eternal abode of Lord Rāma—who (as Kṛṣṇa) blocked the torrential rains by holding the Govardhana Hill (as an umbrella); who wields the mighty bow Śārṅga with which He cut off the twenty strong shoulders of the powerful Rāvaṇa—is the elegant Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi which is surrounded by hills and decorated ramparts, and beautified by elegant residences, palaces, and meeting halls.”

 neyyār pālōḍu amudu seyda * nēmi aṅgai māyaniḍam **

“The eternal abode of the disc wielding Lord—who swallowed pots of  curd, ghee, and milk hidden by Mother Yaśodā who has elegant collyrium-smeared long eyes and dark tresses—is the elegant Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi where the red-legged storks feed on the eel fish in the water-filled fields and is the residence of truthful Vedic brāhmaṇas.”  

 

1353 minnin anna nuṇmaruṅgul * vēyēy taḍantōḷ melliyaṛkā *

 mannu sinatta maḻa viḍaigaḷ * ēḻ anṛaḍartta māladiḍam **

 mannu mudunīr aravinda malar mēl * varivaṇḍu isai pāḍa *

 punnai ponnēy tādudirkkum * puḷḷam bhūtaṅguḍi tānē  

“The eternal abode of the disc-wielding Lord—who tamed the seven mighty and demoniac bulls for the sake of the damsel Nappinnai with thin waist and bamboo-like stout shoulders—is the elegant Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi where the humming bumblebees swarm the lotus flowers blossomed in the eternally full deep lakes and the mastwood trees shed golden pollen grains.”    

 

1354 kuḍaiyā vilaṅgal koṇḍu ēndi * māri paḻudu ānirai kāttu *

 saḍaiyān ōḍa aḍal vāṇan * taḍantōḷ tuṇitta talaivaniḍam **

 kuḍiyā vaṇḍu kaḷḷuṇṇak * kōla nīlam maṭṭugukkum *

 puḍaiyār kaḻani eḻilārum * puḷḷam bhūtaṅguḍi tānē  

“The eternal abode of the Lord—who protected the cows by blocking the torrential rains with Govardhana Hills held as an umbrella; who, after driving away Rudra from the battlefield, cut off the broad shoulders of the challenging Bāṇāsura—is the elegant Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi surrounded by water-filled fields in which honey oozes out from plenty of blue water lily flowers attracting swarms of bees.”

 

1355 kaṛaiyār neḍuvēl maṛamannar vīya * visayan tēr kaḍavi *

 iṛaiyān kaiyil niṛaiyāda * muṇḍam niṛaitta endaiyiḍam **

 maṛaiyāl muttī avai vaḷarkkum * mannu pugaḻāl vaṇmaiyāl *

 poṛaiyāl mikka andaṇar vāḻ * puḷḷam bhūtaṅguḍi tānē  

“The eternal abode of the Lord—who guided Arjuna being his chariot driver and ensured the killing of the enemy kings who were wielding blood-stained spears; who filled the skull that was stuck to the palm of Rudra and relieved him from the curse—is the elegant Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi which is the residence of brāhmaṇas who were famous because of the daily chanting of the Vedas and performing fire sacrifices, their opulence, patience, and their propriety.”

 annamāhi arumaṛaihaḷ * aruḷic ceyda amalaniḍam **

 minnu sōdi navamaṇiyum * vēyin muttum sāmaraiyum *

 ponnum ponni koṇarndu alaikkum * puḷḷam bhūtaṅguḍi tānē  

“The eternal abode of the pure Lord—who appeared as a swan when the earth and the heaven were covered in total darkness and revealed the glorious Vedas again—is the elegant Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi where the gushing river Kāverī brings and dumps resplendent gems, bamboo pearls, whisks, and gold.” 

 

1357 * kaṭṛā maṛittu kāḷiyan tan * senni naḍuṅga naḍam payinṛa *

 poṭṛāmaraiyāḷ tan kēḷvan * puḷḷam bhūtaṅguḍi tan mēl **

 kaṭṛār paravum maṅgaiyar kōn * kārār puyaṛkaik kalikanṛi *

 sol tān īraindu ivai pāḍac * cōra nillā tuyar tāmē

“Those who recite these ten sweet songs—sung by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the chief of Tirumaṅgai who is celebrated by the scholars, and is very benevolent like the rain clouds—about the Lord in Tiruppuḷḷam Bhūtaṅguḍi who grazed the cows and calves; who tormented the serpent Kālīya by dancing on his hoods; and who is the husband of Śrī-Lakṣmī, born from a charming lotus flower will not be frustrated by the worldly miseries.”

“The abode of the Supreme Lord—who doesn’t consider His glories important (when He is dealing with His devotees); who went as the messenger of the Pāṇḍavas—is Tirukkkūḍalūr where there are noble ladies who have fingers slender like the flame glory flower, fragrant hair, and are dressed in soft clothes.”[1]

 

1359 seṛuntiṇ timil ēṛuḍaiya * pinnai 

 peṛuntaṇ kōlam * peṭṛār ūr pōl **

 naṛuntaṇ tīm* tēn uṇḍa vaṇḍu *

 kuṛiñji pāḍum * kūḍalūrē     

“The abode of the Supreme Lord—who tamed the seven demoniac bulls with stout humps and married the most desirable Nappinnai—is Tirukkkūḍalūr where the bumblebees, drunk with fragrant, cool, and sweet honey, hum in kuṛiñji meter.”

 

1360 piḷḷai uruvāyt tayir uṇḍu * aḍiyēn 

 uḷḷam pugunda * oruvar ūr pōl **

 kaḷḷa nārai vayaluḷ * kayal mīn 

 koḷḷai koḷḷum  * kūḍalūrē      

“The abode of the Supreme Lord—who as a boy (Kaṇṇan) gobbled up curd and who has entered and occupied my heart—is Tirukkkūḍalūr where the sly cranes devour the carp fish in abundance in the fields.”

 

1361 kūṭṛēr uruvin kuṛaḷāy * nilam nīr 

 ēṭṛān endai * perumān ūr pōl **

 sēṭṛēr uḻavar * kōdaip pōdūṇ *

 kōl tēn muralum * kūḍalūrē      

“The abode of the Supreme Lord—who assumed the celebrated form of Vāmana Dēva and obtained the earth in charity—is Tirukkkūḍalūr where the bees drink the honey in the flowers worn in their hair by the farmers ploughing the field and hum sweetly.”

 

1362 toṇḍar paravac * cuḍar senṛu aṇava *

 aṇḍattu amarum * aḍihaḷ ūr pōl **

 vaṇḍal alaiyuḷ * keṇḍai miḷira * 

 koṇḍal adirum * kūḍalūrē       

“The abode of the Supreme Lord—who (as Trivikrama) expanded even beyond the sky and the sun planet and was eulogised by the devotees —is Tirukkkūḍalūr where in the water bodies with alluvial soil, the swimming carp fish sparkle and mistaking it as lightning, the clouds rumble!”   

 

1363 takkan vēḷvi * tagartta talaivan *

 tukkam tuḍaitta * tuṇaivar ūr pōl **

 ekkaliḍu * nuṇmaṇal mēl * eṅgum 

 kokkin paḻam vīḻ * kūḍalūrē      

“The abode of the Supreme Lord—who mercifully removed the curse on Śiva, the destroyer of the sacrifice conducted by Dakṣa—is Tirukkkūḍalūr where the mangoes fall down from the trees all over the soft alluvial soil.”  

 

1364 karuntaṇ kaḍalum * malaiyum ulagum *

arundum aḍihaḷ * amarum ūr pōl **

 peruntaṇ mullaip * piḷḷai ōḍi *

 kurundam taḻuvum * kūḍalūrē      

“The abode of the Supreme Lord—who swallowed the dark cool oceans, mountains, and the planetary systems—is Tirukkkūḍalūr where the stout jasmine creepers grow embracing the wild lime trees.”

 

1365 kalaivāḻ piṇaiyōḍu aṇaiyum * tirunīr 

 malai vāḻ endai * maruvum ūr pōl **

 ilai tāḻ teṅgin mēl ninṛu * iḷanīrk 

 kulai tāḻ kiḍaṅgin * kūḍalūrē      

“The abode of the Supreme Lord—who resides in Tirunīrmalai where the bucks or stags and the does live in pairs[2]—is Tirukkkūḍalūr where the tender coconut bunches, hang low almost touching the water, from the coconut trees on the banks of the waterbodies.”  

 

1366 perugu kādal aḍiyēn * uḷḷam 

 urugap pugunda * oruvar ūr pōl **

 arugu kaidai malara * keṇḍai 

 kurugenṛu añjum * kūḍalūrē      

“The abode of the Supreme Lord—who has entered my heart making it filled with love and melt—is Tirukkkūḍalūr where the carp fish get agitated looking at the white  screwpine on the banks and mistaking them for the cranes (which feed on them).”

 

1367 * kāvip perunīr vaṇṇan * kaṇṇan 

 mēvit tigaḻum * kūḍalūr mēl **

 kōvait tamiḻāl * kaliyan sonna *

 pāvaip pāḍap * pāvam pōmē     

“Those who recite these ten songs of faultless Tamiḻ—sung by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the chief of Tirumaṅgai—about the dark blue water lily and dark blue ocean-hued Lord in Tirukkkūḍalūr will be rid of their sins.”

 tenṛal māmaṇam kamaḻ tara varu * tiruveḷḷaṛai ninṛānē  

“O Lord in a standing posture in Tiruveḷḷaṛai where the breeze wafts through the mango orchards and picks up the nice fragrance of the jasmine flowers and blows around![1] O God who wielded the victorious huge axe and annihilated the kṣatriyas on earth twenty-one times! Kindly reveal me the way to attain and serve Your lotus feet which is decorated by tinkling anklets.”

 

1369 vasaiyil nānmaṛai keḍutta ammalar ayaṛku aruḷi * mun parimuhamāy *

 isaikoḷ veda nūl enṛivai payandavanē! * enakku aruḷ puriyē **

 uyarkoḷ mādhavīp pōdoḍu ulāviya * mārudam vīdhiyin vāy *

 tisai ellām kamaḻum poḻil sūḻ * tiruveḷḷaṛai ninṛānē  

“O Lord in a standing posture in Tiruveḷḷaṛai surrounded by groves and where the breeze picks up the nice fragrance of the flowers of the tall hiptage trees and blows all around! Once when Brahmā lost the spotless Vedas, You appeared as Lord Hayagrīva, retrieved the musical Vedas, and taught them to Brahmā! Kindly be merciful to me.”    

 

1370 veyyanāy ulagēḻuḍan nalindavan * uḍalaham iru piḷavā *

 kaiyil nīḷ ugirp paḍaiyadu vāyttavanē! * enakku aruḷ puriyē **

 maiyinār taruvarālinam pāya * vaṇ taḍattiḍaik kamalaṅgaḷ *

 deyva nāṛum oṇ poygaihaḷ sūḻ * tiruveḷḷaṛai ninṛānē  

“O Lord in a standing posture in Tiruveḷḷaṛai which is surrounded by lovely lakes full of fragrant lotus flowers and schools of dark black snakehead fish frolic in the ponds! O one who possesses long nails as weapons with which You cleaved the chest into two of the barbarous Hiraṇyakaśipu who was harassing all the seven planetary systems! Kindly be merciful to me.”         

1371 vāmpariyuga mannar tam uyir sega * aivarhaṭku arasaḷitta *

 kāmbinār tiruveṅkaṭap poruppa! * nin kādalai aruḷ enakku **

 māmpoḻil taḷir kōdiya maḍakkuyil * vāyadu tuvarppeyda *

 tīmpalaṅganit tēnadu nugar * tiruveḷḷaṛai ninṛānē  

“O Lord in a standing posture in Tiruveḷḷaṛai where the sweet koels feast on the tender mango shoots and to remove the astringent taste in the tongue, they drink the nectar from the sweet jackfruits! O Lord who caused the death of the challenging horses and enemy kings riding them and awarded the kingdom to the Pāṇḍavas! Kindly bless me with pure love for You.” 

 

1372 mānavēl oṇkaṇ maḍavaral * maṇmagaḷ aḻuṅga munnīrp parappil *

 ēnamāhi anṛu iru nilam iḍandavanē! * enakku aruḷ puriyē **

 kāna māmullai kaḻaik karumbu ēṛi * veṇmuṛuval seydu alarhinṛa *

 tēnin vāy malar murugu ugukkum * tiruveḷḷaṛai ninṛānē  

“O Lord in a standing posture in Tiruveḷḷaṛai where the bumblebees are drunk with the nectar from the smiling white jasmine flowers on the wild creepers climbing to the tip of the sugarcane plants! One who went into the depths of the causal ocean, in the form of a boar, to retrieve the drowned Bhū-devī who possesses the qualities of a noble lady and lovely eyes resembling a sharp lance! Please be merciful to me.”

 

1373 poṅgu nīḷmuḍi amararhaḷ toḻudu eḻa * amudinaik koḍuttaḷippān *

 aṅgu ōr āmai adāhiya ādi! * nin aḍimaiyai aruḷ enakku **

 taṅgu pēḍaiyōḍu ūḍiya madukaram * taiyalār kuḻal aṇaivān *

 tiṅgaḷ tōy senni māḍam senṛaṇai * tiruveḷḷaṛai ninṛānē  

“O Lord in a standing posture in Tiruveḷḷaṛai where the male bees, because of the love-fight with the female bees, fly away to the palaces with towers which rise high touching the moon, to hide in the tresses of the women! O cause of all causes, who appeared as a tortoise (while churning the Milk Ocean) to ensure that the ambrosia is obtained by the demigods, with the effulgent long crowns, who worshipped You! Please bless me to be Your servant.”

 vēṛu vēṛuga villadu vaḷaittavanē! * enakku aruḷ puriyē **

 māṛil sōdiya maradagap pāsaḍait * tāmarai malar vārnda *

 tēṛal māndi vaṇḍu innisai mural * tiruveḷḷaṛai ninṛānē  

“O Lord in a standing posture in Tiruveḷḷaṛai where the bees hum sweetly after drinking the nectar from the bright flowers of lotus plants with green leaves! One who shot arrows from the Śārṅga bow cutting off all the ten heads of Rāvaṇa with bejewelled crowns! Please be merciful to me!” 

 

1375 mun ivvēḻulagu uṇarvinṛi iruḷ miha * umbarhaḷ toḻudētta *

 annamāhi anṛu arumaṛai payandavanē! * enakku aruḷ puriyē **

 mannu kēdagai sūdagam enṛivai * vanattiḍaic curumbu inaṅgaḷ *

 tennavenṛu vaṇḍu innisai mural * tiruveḷḷaṛai ninṛānē  

“O Lord in a standing posture in Tiruveḷḷaṛai where in the groves of screwpines , mango and various other trees, while the male bees buzz loudly, the female bees hum sweetly! Once when all the  planetary systems were enveloped by the darkness of ignorance and the demigods prayed to You, You appeared as a haṁsa and retrieved all the Vedic knowledge! Please be merciful to me!    

 

1376 āṅgu māvali vēḷviyil irandu senṛu * agaliḍam muḻudinaiyum *

 pāṅgināl koṇḍa parama! niṛpaṇindu eḻuvēn * enakku aruḷ puriyē **

 ōṅgu piṇḍiyin semmalar ēṛi * vaṇḍu uḻitara * māvēṛit

 tīṅgkuyil miḻaṭṛum paḍappai * tiruveḷḷaṛai ninṛānē   

“O Lord in a standing posture in Tiruveḷḷaṛai where in the groves the bumblebees swarm the red flowers of aśoka trees, and the sweet-voiced koels sing from the mango trees! O Puruṣottama who went to the sacrificial arena of Bali, begged for (three steps of) land and secured all the planetary systems! Kindly be merciful to me paying obeisances to You!”

 

1377 * mañjulā maṇi māḍaṅgaḷ sūḻ * tiruveḷḷaṛai adan mēya *

 añjanam puraiyum tiru uruvanai * ādiyai amudattai **

 nañju ulāviya vēl valavan * kalikanṛi sol aiyiraṇḍum *

 eñjal inṛi ninṛu ēṭṛa vallār * imaiyōrkku arasu āvarhaḷē

“Those who recite, without any fault, these ten songs—sung by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, who throws (at his enemies) poison-tipped lance—about the Lord who resides eternally in Tiruveḷḷaṛai surrounded by high rise palaces touching the clouds and decorated with valuable gemstones; who is collyrium-hued; who is the cause of all causes; who is dear like the nectar, will become the ruler of the demigods.”

“It is said that Tennaraṅgam[1]—surrounded by fertile fields  and the gushing river Kāverī which brings sandalwood and gemstones—is the abode of the Lord who created Brahmā from (the lotus from) His navel; who swallowed the planetary systems; the master of our clan; and the Lord of the demigods.”

 

1379 vaiyam uṇḍu ālilai mēvum māyan * maṇi nīḷ muḍi *

 paikoḷ nāgattaṇaiyān * payilum iḍam enbarāl **

 taiyal nallār kuḻal mālaiyum * maṭṛavar taḍamulai *

seyya sāndum kalandiḻi punal sūḻ * tennaraṅgamē   

“It is said that Tennaraṅgam—surrounded by river Kāverī which flows with its water mixed with the garlands adorning the hair and the sandal wood paste applied on the breasts of noble ladies (bathing)—is the abode of the incredible Lord who swallowed all the planets and reclined (as a baby) on a banyan leaf; who is adorned with a gemstones-studded effulgent crown; who is reclining on the bed of hooded Śeṣa Nāga.”  

 

1380 paṇḍu ivvaiyam aḷappān senṛu * māvali kaiyil nīr 

 koṇḍa * āḻit taḍakkaik * kuṛaḷan iḍam enbarāl **

 vaṇḍu pāḍum maduvār punal * vandiḻi kāviri *

 aṇḍa nāṛum poḻil sūḻndu * aḻagār tennaraṅgamē  

“It is said that Tennaraṅgam—surrounded by river Kāverī which flows with its water mixed with honey and many groves with sky-high tall trees and swarmed by humming bees—is the abode of Lord Vāmana who once went to Bali with the intention of getting back the planetary systems, accepted the water confirming the offering, in His hand which wields the disc.”

 

1381 viḷaitta vempōr viṛal vāḷarakkan * nagar pāḻpaḍa *

 vaḷaitta valvil taḍakkai avanukku * iḍam enbarāl **

 tuḷaikkai yānai maruppum agilum * koṇarndu undi * mun

 tiḷaikkum selvap punal kāviri sūḻ * tennaraṅgamē  

“It is said that Tennaraṅgam—surrounded by river Kāverī which brings and dumps the elephant tusks and aguru wood—is the abode of the Lord who wields the Śārṅga bow with which He destroyed Laṅkā, the city of the mighty Rāvaṇa who is an expert in a sword fight and who instigated the terrible war.”

“It is said that the elegant Tennaraṅgam—surrounded by walls plated with gold and worshipped by Indra, the king of the demigods, and all in the seven planetary systems—is the abode of Lord Rāma who in great anger threw arrows which killed Rāvaṇa, the husband of Mandodarī who has fragrant hair.”

“It is said that Tennaraṅgam—surrounded by river Kāverī which gushes through banana plantations, pulling down the plants with the fruit bunches and flows with turbulence—is the abode of Kaṇṇan who sucked the life of the demon Pūtanā who came well dressed like the slim-waisted Mother Yaśodā.” 

 

1384 kañjan neñjum kaḍu mallarum * śakaṭamum kālināl *

 tuñja venṛa suḍar āḻiyān * vāḻiḍam enbarāl **

 mañju sēr māḷigai * nīḍu agil pugaiyum * maṛaiyōr

señjol vēḷvip pugaiyum kamaḻum * tennaraṅgamē   

“It is said that Tennaraṅgam—which smells with the aguru smoke from the sky-high palaces and the smoke from the fire sacrifices performed as per Vedic directions by the Vedic brāhmaṇas—is the abode of the disc-wielding Lord who shattered Kaṁsa’s plans, the strong wrestlers, and Śakaṭāsura with His kick.”

 

1385 ēnam mīn āmaiyōḍu * ariyum siṛu kuṛaḷumāy *

 tānumāya * taraṇit talaivan iḍam enbarāl **

 vānum maṇṇum niṛaiyap * pugundu īṇḍi vaṇaṅgum * nal

“It is said that Tennaraṅgam—where a large gathering of both the demigods and human beings and also devotees enjoying (devotional service like tasting) a mixture of milk and honey worship—is the abode of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who appeared as a boar, a fish, a tortoise, Nṛsiṁhadeva, Vāmana, and also as Rāma.”

 

1386 sēyan enṛum mihap periyan * nuṇ nērmaiyināya * im

Māyai yārum aṛiyā vahaiyān * iḍam enbarāl **

 vēyin muttum maṇiyum koṇarndu * ārpunal kāviri *

 āya pon māmadiḷ sūḻndu * aḻagār tennaraṅgamē  

“It is said that Tennaraṅgam—which is surrounded by a strong gold-plated rampart and river Kāverī which brings and dumps pearls fallen from the bamboos and gemstones and is elegant—is the abode of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is not easily approachable, the Supreme Lord, smaller than the smallest, incredible and is beyond understanding.”

 nallisai mālaihaḷ * nāliraṇḍum iraṇḍum uḍan *

“Those who understand the purport and recite these ten melodious songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the chief of those living in Tirumaṅgai surrounded by strong stone ramparts—about Tennaraṅgam the abode of the Lord, whose chest is the eternal abode of Śrī- Lakṣmī born from a lotus flower, will become the ruler of this earth and then attain Vaikuṇṭha.”

Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār has rendered these ten songs in the words of the mother of Parakāla Nāyakī, lamenting about the condition of her daughter.

“My daughter is brazenly blabbering ‘Oh Veṅkaṭā!’ ‘Oh Veṅkaṭā!’ She doesn’t rest her head on my lap anymore and her long sword-like eyes have forgotten sleep. How can I digest the acts performed with my daughter by the Lord who is dark-hued like the bumblebee and the fresh rain cloud; the life of the eternally liberated associates in Vaikuṇṭha; and the master of Śrī- Lakṣmī who appeared from the Ocean of Milk?”

 

1389 kalaiyāḷā agalalkul * kanavaḷaiyum kaiyāḷā en seygēn nān? *

 vilaiyāḷā aḍiyēnai * vēṇḍudiyō? vēṇḍāyō? ennum ** meyya

 malaiyāḷan vānavar tam talaiyāḷan * marāmaram ēḻ eyda venṛic

 cilaiyāḷan * en magaḷaic ceydanahaḷ * eṅṅanam nān sindikkēnē?      

“(Since she has thinned) The clothes from the broad hip and the golden bangles from the hand slip off; what to do? She laments, ‘Will You accept me as Your slave or not?’ How can I digest the acts performed with my daughter by the Lord of Tirumeyyam who is the master of the eternally liberated associates and who possesses the victorious bow (with which He threw the arrow) that pierced the seven sal trees?”

 

1390 mānāya mennōkki * vāḷ neḍuṅgkaṇ nīr malhum vaḷaiyum sōrum *

 tēnāya naṛuntuḻāy alaṅgalin * tiṛam pēsi uṛaṅgāḷ kāṇmin **

 kānāyan kaḍi manaiyil tayir uṇḍu ney paruga * nandan peṭṛa

 ānāyan * en magaḷaic ceydanahaḷ * ammanaimīr! aṛihilēnē          

“My daughter’s long, bright eyes which are lovely like that of a doe are filled with tears; the bangles are slipping from her hand; glorifying the transcendental qualities of the garland made of fragrant tulasī leaves she is sleepless; please look at her; ladies! How can I digest the acts performed with my daughter by the son of Nanda Mahārāja, Gopāla Kṛṣṇa, who wanders in the forest, who gulps curd and drinks ghee stored in houses guarded well?”  

 

1391 tāy vāyil soṛ kēḷāḷ * tan āyattōḍu aṇaiyāḷ taḍamen koṅgai

 yē * ārac cāndu aṇiyāḷ * emperumān tiruvaraṅgam eṅgē? ennum **

 pēy māya mulai uṇḍu ivvulagu uṇḍa peru vayiṭṛan * pēsil naṅgāy! *

 māmāyan en magaḷaic ceydanahaḷ * maṅgaimīr! madikkilēnē         

 “Oh girl! Oh ladies! She doesn’t listen to her mother’s words; she doesn’t meet her friends; she doesn’t decorate her soft and well formed breasts with sandal paste; she keeps asking, ‘Where is Śrīraṅgam, the abode of my Lord?’ If I were to talk about the acts performed with my daughter by the incredible Lord who sucked the milk and her life from the breast of the demon Pūtanā; the  one with a huge belly who swallowed all the planetary systems, they are unlimited.”

 

1392 pūṇ mulai mēl cāndaṇiyāḷ * porukayal kaṇ mai eḻudāḷ pūvai pēṇāḷ *

ēṇaṛiyāḷ ettanaiyum * emperumān tiruvaraṅgam eṅgē ? ennum **

 nāṇmalarāḷ nāyaganāy * nāmaṛiya āyppāḍi vaḷarnda nambi *

 āṇmaganāy en magaḷaic ceydanahaḷ * ammanaimīr! aṛigilēnē      

“Oh ladies! She doesn’t apply sandal paste on her breasts decorated by jewels; neither she applies collyrium to her eyes which resemble a sparring pair of fish; nor she plays with her pet bird; she doesn’t desire any material objects; she just repeats, ‘Where is Śrīraṅgam, the abode of my Lord?’ How can I digest the intimate acts performed with my daughter by the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī who appeared from red lotus; and as we all know, who grew up in Gokulam?”  

 

1393 tādāḍu vana mālai * tārānō? enṛenṛē taḷarndāḷ kāṇmin *

 yādānum onṛu uraikkil * emperumān tiruvaraṅgam ennum ** pūmēl

 mādāḷan kuḍamāḍi madhusūdan * mannarkkāy munnam senṛa

 tūdāḷan * en magaḷaic ceydanahaḷ * eṅṅanam nān sollugēnē?     

“She keeps lamenting ‘Won’t He give me His garland of forest flowers spilling pollen dust?’ and becomes dull; if I tell her something she just says, ‘My Lord’s Śrīraṅgam;’ How can I recount the acts performed with my daughter by the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī who appeared from red lotus; who is an expert ‘pot dancer;’ and who went as a messenger of the Pāṇḍavas?”   

 

1394 vārāḷum iḷaṅgkoṅgai * vaṇṇam vēṛāyinavāṛu eṇṇāḷ * eṇṇil

 pērāḷan pērallāl pēsāḷ * ippeṇ peṭṛēn en seyhēn nān? *

 tārāḷan taṇ kuḍandai nagarāḷan * aivarkkāy amaril uytta

 tērāḷan * en magaḷaic ceydanahaḷ * eṅṅanam nān seppugēnē?      

“She is not concerned about her corseted tender breasts becoming pale; she thinks and talks about only the holy names of the Lord; I am proud/concerned that I am the mother of this girl, what to do? How can I recount the acts performed with my daughter by the Lord who is adorned with a wonderful garland; who rules the cool city of Kumbakōṇam; and who drove the chariot (of Arjuna) in the battle (of Mahābhārata).

 

1395 uṛavādum ilaḷ enṛu * oḻiyādu palar ēsum alar āyiṭṛāl *

 maṛavādē eppoḻudum * māyavanē! mādavanē! eṅginṛaḷāl **

 piṛavāda pērāḷan peṇṇāḷan maṇṇāḷan * viṇṇōr taṅgaḷ

 aṛavāḷan * en magaḷaic ceydanahaḷ * ammanaimīr! aṛihilēnē      

“She is blamed by all that ‘she doesn’t have any respect for her mother and father;’ (however she is not concerned and) she never forgets to chant, ‘O incredible one!’ and ‘O Mādhava!’ O ladies! How can I digest the acts performed with my daughter by the Lord who is glorious that He is not born because of karma (like us); the master of women (like gopīs) and the earthly people; and the benefactor of the demigods.”  

 

1396 pandōḍu kaḻal maruvāḷ * paiṅgiḷiyum pālūṭṭāḷ pāvai pēṇāḷ *

 vandānō! tiruvaraṅgan * vārānō? enṛenṛē vaḷaiyum sōrum **

 chandōgan pauḻiyan aintaḻal ōmbu * taittiriyan sāma vedi *

 andō! vandu en magaḷaic ceydanagaḷ * ammanaimīr! aṛigilēnē      

“She doesn’t touch the ball and the stones; she doesn’t feed her pet parrot; she doesn’t even look at her doll; she keeps blabbering, ‘Has Śrīraṅgan come?’ ‘Won’t He come?’ and has become thin, losing her bangles; O ladies! How can I digest the acts performed with my daughter by the Lord glorified by Chāndogya, Kauṣītaky, Taittirīya Upaniṣads and the Sāma Veda and worshipped by the ‘five fires.’” 

 

1397 * sēlugaḷum vayal puḍai sūḻ * tiruvaraṅgattu ammānaic cindai seyda *                                  

 nīla malarkkaṇ maḍavāḷ niṛai aḻivait * tāy moḻinda adanai ** nērār

 kāla vēl parakālan * kalikanṛi oli mālai kaṭṛu vallār *

 mālai sēr veṇkuḍaik kīḻ mannavarāyp * ponnulagil vāḻvar tāmē

“Those who understand the purport and recite this garland of songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār, the nemesis of his enemies, who possesses a spear, and is known as Parakālan—about the lamentation of the mother of blue lotus-like eyed Parakāla Nāyakī’s loss of modesty because of her total meditation on the Lord of Śrīraṅgam which is surrounded by fields where fish frolic, will rule the earth under a white parasol decorated by strings of pearls  and then attain Vaikuṇṭha.” 

1398 * kaimmāna maḻakaḷiṭṛaik * kaḍal kiḍanda karumaṇiyai *

 maimmāna maradagattai * maṛai uraitta tirumālai **

 emmānai enakku enṛum iniyānaip * panikātta 

 ammānai * yān kaṇḍadu * aṇinīrt tennaraṅgattē    

“I worshipped the Lord—who resembles a young elephant with a long trunk; who resembles a blue sapphire gemstone reclining on the sea; who resembles the dark green emerald gemstone; the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī who is eulogised by the Vedas; who is my master and is eternally sweet to me; and who saved the cattle from the rains—in water-rich Tennaraṅgam.”

 

1399 * pērānaik * kuṛuṅguḍi emperumānai * tiruttaṇgāl

 ūrānaik * karambanūr uttamanai ** muttilaṅgu

 kārār tiṇ kaḍal ēḻum * malai ēḻu ivvulagēḻu uṇḍum *

 ārādenṛu irundānaik * kaṇḍadu tennaraṅgattē   

“I worshipped the Lord—whose abode is Tiruppēr Nagar; who is the Lord of Tirukkuṛuṅguḍi; who resides eternally in Tiruttaṇgal; who is Lord Puruṣottama of Tirukkarambanūr; and who even after swallowing the dark, deep seven oceans containing brilliant coral stones, the seven mountains, and the seven planetary systems was not satiated[1]—in Tennaraṅgam.”

 

1400 ēnāhi ulagiḍandu * anṛu irunilanum peru visumbum *

 tānāya perumānait * tannaḍiyār manattu enṛum **

 tēnāhi amudāhit * tigaḻndānai magiḻndu orukāl *

 ānāyan ānānaik * kaṇḍadu tennaraṅgattē    

“I worshipped the Lord—who appeared as a boar and retrieved the earth from the depth of ocean; in whose body (the virāṭ-puruṣa) are the vast earth and the wide sky situated; who is always sweet like the honey and ambrosia in the hearts of His devotees; and who appeared as a cowherd boy—in Tennaraṅgam.”

 

1401 vaḷarndavanait taḍaṅgaḍaluḷ * valiyuruvil tiriśakaṭam *

taḷarndu adira udaittavanait * tariyādu anṛu iraṇiyanaip

 piḷandavanai ** perunilam īraḍi nīṭṭip * paṇḍu oru nāḷ

 aḷandavanai * yān kaṇḍadu * aṇinīrt tennaraṅgattē  

“I worshipped the Lord—who reclines in the vast ocean; who kicked and scattered the demon Śakaṭāsura; who in great anger tore off (the chest of) Hiraṇyakaśipu; and who extended His feet to measure and claim the vast planetary systems—in water-rich Tennaraṅgam.”

 

1402 nīr aḻalāy neḍu nilanāy * ninṛānai * anṛu arakkan

 ūr aḻalāl uṇḍānaik * kaṇḍār pin kāṇāmē **

 pēraḻalāyp peruvisumbāyp * pin maṛaiyōr mandirattin *

 āraḻalāl uṇḍānaik * kaṇḍadu tennaraṅgattē   

“I worshipped the Lord—who has transformed into water, fire, and the vast earth; who (appeared as Rāma and) burnt the city of Laṅkā, which was a feast to the eyes, not to be seen anymore; who is also the brahma-jyoti; who is the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha; and who eats the oblations offered by the Vedic brāhmaṇas through the fire—in Tennaraṅgam.”

 

1403 tan sinattait tavirttu aḍaindār * tava neṛiyai * tariyādu

 kañjanaik konṛu * anṛu ulagam uṇḍu umiḻnda kaṛpagattai **

 veñjinatta koḍuntoḻilōn * visai uruvai asaivitta *

añjiṛaip puḷ pāganai * yān kaṇḍadu tennaraṅgattē  

“I worshipped the Lord—who rewards those who eliminate their enviousness and surrender to Him with devotion; who killed Kaṁsa in great anger; the most benevolent Lord who swallowed (during pralaya) the planetary systems and brought them out (during creation); who defeated Śiva, who is in charge of destruction of the universe carried out by him in the mood of anger, and his powerful weapons; and who flies on the back of Garuḍa sporting powerful wings—in Tennaraṅgam.”

 

1404 * sindanaiyait tava neṛiyait * tirumālai * piriyādu

 vandu enadu manattu irunda * vaḍamalaiyai ** varivaṇḍār

 kondaṇainda poḻil kōval * ulagaḷappān aḍi nimirtta

 andaṇanai * yān kaṇḍadu * aṇinīrt tennaraṅgattē  

“I worshipped the Lord—who has filled my thoughts; who reveals the path (to attain Him); who is the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī and the Lord of Veṅkaṭa Hills; who has entered my heart and stays without leaving even for a second; and who is present as Lord Trivikrama, who extended His legs to measure the planetary systems, in Tirukkōvilūr which has many gardens with an abundance of flowers swarmed by bees—in water-rich Tennaraṅgam.”

 

1405 tuvaritta uḍaiyavarkkum * tūymai illāc camaṇarkkum *

 avargaṭku aṅgu aruḷillā * aruḷānai ** tannaḍainda

 emargaṭkum aḍiyēṛkum * emmāṛkum emmanaikkum *

 amararkkum pirānāraik * kaṇḍadu tennaraṅgattē   

“I worshipped the Lord—who doesn’t favour the saffron-clad Buddhists and the unclean Jains but is merciful to His devotees; He is the Lord of our clan, myself, my father, my mother and the eternally liberated who have taken shelter of Him—in Tennaraṅgam.”

 

1406 poy vaṇṇam manattu agaṭṛip * pulan aindum sela vaittu *

 mey vaṇṇam ninaindavarkku * mey ninṛa vittahanai **

 maivaṇṇam karumugil pōl * tigaḻ vaṇṇam maradagattin *

 avvaṇṇa vaṇṇanai * yān kaṇḍadu tennaraṅgattē   

“I worshipped the Lord—who has removed my attachment to the temporary material objects; who helped me to control my sense organs from enjoying sense gratification; who reveals Himself to those who think of Him only; who is incredible; whose body hue resembles the colour of collyrium and the rain cloud and the green of emerald gemstone—in Tennaraṅgam.”

 

1407 * āmaruvi nirai mēytta * aṇi araṅgattu ammānai *

 kāmaru sīrk kalikanṛi * oli seyda malipugaḻ sēr **

 nāmaruvu tamiḻ mālai * nāliraṇḍōḍu iraṇḍinaiyum *

 tāmaruvi vallār mēl * sārā tīvinai tānē

“Those who learn these ten glorious and sweet Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who possesses auspicious qualities—about the Lord who liked to graze the cows and is the Lord of majestic Śrīraṅgam will not be afflicted by sinful reactions.”

 tandaiyum tāyum makkaḷum mikka suṭṛamum * suṭṛi ninṛu agalāp

bandamum ** bandam aṛuppadōr marundum pānmaiyum * palluyirkku ellām *

 andamum vāḻvum āya emperumān * araṅgamā nagar amarndānē         

“The Lord—whose unlimited auspicious qualities are eulogised by the demigods like Indra, Brahmā, Śiva; who is the father, mother, the offsprings, the countrymen, relatives who don’t leave you, also the medicine to cut off the material attachment, the peace (after cutting off the material attachment), the destruction, and the creation—is in the reclining form in the temple of the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam.”

 

1410 maṇṇum mānilanum malaihaḷum kaḍalum * vānamum dānavar ulagum *

 tunnu māyiruḷāyt tulaṅgoḷi suruṅgit * tollai nānmaṛaihaḷum maṛaiya **

 pinnum vānavarkkum munivarkkum nalhip * piṛaṅgiruḷ niṛam keḍa * oru nāḷ

 annamāy anṛaṅgu arumaṛai payandān * araṅgamā nagar amarndānē         

“The Lord—who, when this vast earth, the mountains, the oceans, the sky, the nether world were all covered by a dense darkness negating the brightness, and the four Vedas disappeared, appeared as the swan and dispelled the darkness and gave back the invaluable Vedas to the demigods and the seers—is in the reclining form in the temple of the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam.”

 1411 māyirum kunṛam onṛu mattāga * māsuṇam adanōḍum aḷavi *

 pāyirum peḷavam pagaḍu viṇḍalaṛap * paḍutirai visumbiḍaip paḍara **

 sēyiru visumbum tiṅgaḷum suḍarum * devarum tāmuḍan tisaippa *

 āyiram tōḷāl alai kaḍal kaḍaindān * araṅgamā nagar amarndānē         

“The Lord—who used the wide and tall (Mandara) mountain as the pivot and a serpent (Vāsuki) as the rope and churned with His one thousand arms the vast, wide and turbulent Ocean of Milk which trumpeted like an elephant and its waves rose up to the sky, while the heaven, the moon, and the other luminant objects, and the demigods were wonder-struck—is in the reclining form in the temple of the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam.”

 

1412 eṅṅanē uyvar? dānavar ninaindāl * iraṇiyan ilaṅgu pūṇ agalam *

 poṅgu veṅgurudi pon malai piḷandu * poḻi tarum aruvi ottiḻiya **

 veṅgaṇ vāḷeyiṭṛōr veḷḷimā vilaṅgal * viṇṇuṛak kanal viḻittu eḻundadu *

 aṅṅanē okka ari uruvānān * araṅgamā nagar amarndānē         

“The Lord—who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva, with red-hot eyes and sword-like teeth, like a huge silver mountain rising sky-high and spitting fire, and split the bejewelled chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu with hot blood gushing out like a waterfall erupting, splitting Mount Meru—is in the reclining form in the temple of the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam.”

 

1413 āyiram kunṛam senṛu tokkanaiya * aḍal purai eḻil tigaḻ tiraḷ tōḷ *

 āyiram tuṇiya aḍal maḻup paṭṛi * maṭṛavan agal visumbu aṇaiya **

 āyiram peyarāl amarar senṛu iṛaiñja * aṛi tuyil alai kaḍal naḍuvē *

 āyiram suḍar vāy aravaṇait tuyinṛān * araṅgamā nagar amarndānē         

“The Lord—who (Paraśurāma) cut off the one thousand shoulders, which were powerful, elegant and like one thousand hills, of Kārtavīryārjuna with his sharp axe and sent him to the vast heaven; who is approached by the demigods and worshipped with His one thousand holy names; and who lies down in the Ocean of Milk on the serpent bed and is in yoga-nidrā—is in the reclining form in the temple of the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam.”

 

 

1414 suri kuḻal kanivāyt tiruvinaip piritta * koḍumaiyiṛ kaḍuvisai arakkan *

“The Lord—who vowed to pulverise the ten heads crowned with resplendent helmets decorated with gemstones of the evilest demon Rāvaṇa and destroy Laṅkā because he kidnapped mother Sītā with lovely hair and lips like scarlet gourd; who subdued the ocean king by shooting murderous arrows from His victorious bow and with the help of the army of monkeys built a bridge across the ocean with rocks and mountains—is in the reclining form in the temple of the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam.”

 

1415 ūḻiyāy ōmattucciyāy * orukāl uḍaiya tēr oruvanāy * ulagil

 sūḻimāl yānait tuyar keḍuttu * ilaṅgai malaṅga anṛu aḍusaram turandu **

 pāḻiyāl mikka pārttanukku aruḷip * pagalavan oḷi keḍa * pagalē

 āḻiyāl anṛaṅgu āḻiyai maṛaittān * araṅgamā nagar amarndānē         

“The Lord—who transformed into time and other material objects; who is the yajña-puruṣa; who is the Supersoul inside the sun-god who travels on a chariot with one wheel known as Saṁvatsara (year); who relieved the distress of Gajendra, the King of the elephants; who shot deadly arrows to demolish Laṅkā; who covered the sun with His disc to cover its light (and bring illusory sunset) to help the valiant Arjuna (to kill Jayadratha)—is in the reclining form in the temple of the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam.”

 

1416 pēyinār mulaiyūṇ piḷḷaiyāy * orukāl peru nilam viḻuṅgi adu umiḻnda

 vāyanāy * mālāy ālilai vaḷarndu * maṇi muḍi vānavar tamakkuc

 cēyanāy ** aḍiyēṛku aṇiyanāy vandu * en sindaiyuḷ ventuyar aṛukkum *

 āyanāy anṛu kunṛam onṛu eḍuttān * araṅgamā nagar amarndānē         

“The Lord—who, as a baby, sucked the poison-laced nipple of the demon Pūtanā; who swallowed (during pralaya) the vast earth and brought it out (during creation); who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead; who was in yoga-nidrā on a banyan leaf; who is unattainable to the demigods; who came to me and eliminated the hard miseries in my heart; who, as Gopāla Kṛṣṇa, lifted and held the Govardhana Hills as an umbrella—is in the reclining form in the temple of the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam.”

 

1417 * ponnum māmaṇiyum muttamum sumandu * porutirai mānadi puḍai sūḻndu *

 annamāḍu ulavum alai punal sūḻnda * araṅgamā nagar amarndānai **

 mannu māmāḍa maṅgaiyar talaivan * mānavēl kaliyan vāy olihaḷ *

 panniya panuval pāḍuvār * nāḷum paḻavinai paṭṛu aṛuppārē            

“Those who recite these ten glorious and sweet Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who possesses a victorious spear and is the chief of those in Tirumaṅgai with many strong multi-storeyed palaces—about the Lord who resides in the temple in majestic Śrīraṅgam surrounded by the gushing river Kāverī and wavy lakes inhabited by swans, will not be afflicted by sinful reactions.” 

1418 * ēḻai ēdalan kīḻ magan ennādu iraṅgi * maṭṛavaṛku innaruḷ surandu *

 māḻai mān maḍa nōkki un tōḻi * umbi embi enṛoḻindilai ** ugandu

tōḻan nī enakku iṅgoḻi enṛa soṛkaḷ vandu * aḍiyēn manattu irundiḍa * 

 āḻi vaṇṇa! nin aḍiyiṇai aḍaindēn * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānē!    

“O ocean-hued! O Lord residing in the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by lovely gardens! I have heard in disciplic succession that You (Lord Rāma) didn’t think Guha was ignorant, hunter, and low-born but was kind to him; with great affection and mercy You told him, ‘She (my wife Sītā-devī), who has doe-like innocent look, is your friend, my brother (Lakṣmaṇa) is your brother,’ and further, ‘Come near me, you are my friend;’ meditating on this gesture of Yours which has touched and melted my heart, I have surrendered at Your lotus feet.”     

 

1419 vāda māmagan markkaḍam vilaṅgu * maṭṛōr sādi enṛoḻindilai * ugandu

 kādal ādaram kaḍalinum peruhac * cey tagavinukku illai kaimmāṛu enṛu **

 kōdil vāymaiyināyoḍum uḍanē * uṇban nān enṛa ōṇporuḷ * enakkum

 ādal vēnḍum enṛu aḍiyiṇai aḍaindēn * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānē!    

O Lord residing in the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by lovely gardens! You didn’t think that the son of Vāyu (Hanuman) was low-born, an animal with lower consciousness, and that too a mischievous monkey but were kind to him; Your love and affection for him grew and You thought that it was not possible to suitably reciprocate for all his service to me; You told him, ‘O truthful one! I will eat with you;’ hoping that this kind gesture of Yours would be shown to me too, I have surrendered at Your lotus feet.”    

 

1420 kaḍikoḷ pūmpoḻil kāmaru poygai * vaigu tāmarai vāṅgiya vēḻam * 

 muḍiyum vaṇṇamōr muḻuvali mudalai paṭṛa * maṭṛadu nin caraṇ ninaippa **

 koḍiya vāy vilaṅginnuyir malaṅgak * koṇḍa sīṭṛam onṛuṇḍuḷadaṛindu * un

 aḍiyanēnum vandu aḍiyiṇai aḍaindēn * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānē!    

“O Lord residing in the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by lovely gardens! When the King of the elephants stepped into a lake, surrounded by gardens full of fragrant flowers to pluck a lotus flower, its leg was caught by a strong crocodile, and the elephant put into great distress took shelter under Your lotus feet, You became extremely angry and killed the evil-mouthed crocodile; I came to know about Your anger and surrendered at Your lotus feet (thinking that Your anger will save me too).”    

 

1421 nañju cōrvadōr veñjina aravam * veruvi vandu nin caraṇ enac caraṇā * 

 neñjil koṇḍu nin añjiṛaip paṛavaikku * aḍaikkalam koḍuttu aruḷ seydadu aṛindu **

 veñjolāḷargaḷ naman tamar kaḍiyar * koḍiya seyvanavuḷa * adaṛku aḍiyēn

 añji vandu nin aḍiyiṇai aḍaindēn * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānē!    

“O Lord residing in the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by lovely gardens! When a poison-spitting and envious serpent (Sumukha), in fear (of Garuḍa), approached You, and took shelter, You took pity on him and assured him protection and gave the responsibility of protecting him to Your carrier Garuḍa; knowing about Your wonderful action and in fear of the various cruel acts executed by the harshly worded and evil looking Yamadutas, I surrendered at Your lotus feet.”[1]     

 

1422 māga mānilam muḻuvadum vandu iṛaiñjum * malaraḍi kaṇḍa māmaṛaiyāḷan * 

 tōgai māmayil annavar inbam * tuṭṛilāmaiyil atta! iṅgu oḻindu **

 bhogam nī eydip pinnum nammiḍaikkē * pōduvāy enṛa ponnaruḷ *  enakkum

 āha vēṇḍum enṛu aḍiyiṇai aḍaindēn * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānē!    

“O Lord residing in the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by lovely gardens! Your lotus feet are worshipped by the residents of Vaikuṇṭha, the earth, and all other planetary systems; when Govinda Swami, a meritorious brāhmaṇa surrendered to Your lotus feet, (seeking mokṣa), (understanding his inner desire) You told him, ‘Since you have not enjoyed conjugal pleasure with women, you stay back for some more time, and after enjoying sense gratification come back to me.’ Hoping for similar mercy to me (understanding my desire that I should become Your eternal servant), I surrendered at Your lotus feet.”

 

 

1423 mannu nānmaṛai māmuni peṭṛa maindanai * madiyāda veṅgkūṭṛam

 tannai añji * nin caraṇ enac caraṇāyt * tagavil kālanaiyuga munindoḻiyā **

 pinnai enṛum nin tiruvaḍi piriyā vaṇṇam * eṇṇiya pēraruḷ *  enakkum

 annadu āhum enṛu aḍiyiṇai aḍaindēn * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānē!    

“O Lord residing in the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by lovely gardens! When Mārkaṇḍeya, the son of a Vedic scholar (Mṛkaṇḍa Muni) surrendered unto You, seeking protection from the stubborn and angry Yama, You protected him driving away Yama; further, You blessed him that he will never leave Your lotus feet. Hoping that I should also be blessed so, I surrendered at Your lotus feet.”

 

1424 ōdu vāymaiyum uvaniyap piṛappum * unakku mun tanda andaṇan oruvan * 

 kādal en magan pugaliḍam kāṇēn * kaṇḍu nī taruvāy enakku enṛu ** 

 kōdil vāymaiyinān unai vēṇḍiya * kuṛai muḍittu avan siṛuvanaik koḍuttāy * 

 ādalāl vandu un aḍiyiṇai aḍaindēn * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānē!    

“O Lord residing in the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by lovely gardens! When an exalted brāhmaṇa (Sāndīpani Muni) who taught you the Vedas and gave You the second birth (sacred thread ceremony) necessary to recite the Vedas, prayed to You, ‘I do not know where is my dear son now after death; please bring him back to me,’ You were happy to bring back his son. Hoping that You will fulfil my desire too, I surrendered at Your lotus feet.”    

 

1425 veda vāymoḻi andaṇan oruvan * endai! nin caraṇ ennuḍai manaivi * 

 kādal makkaḷaip payattalum kāṇāḷ * kaḍiyadōr deyvam koṇḍoḷikkum enṛaḻaippa **

 ēdalār munnē innaruḷ avaṛkuc ceydu * un makkaḷ maṭṛivar enṛu koḍuttāy * 

 ādalāl vandu un aḍiyiṇai aḍaindēn * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānē!    

“O Lord residing in the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by lovely gardens! A Vedic brāhmaṇa appealed to You, ‘My Lord! I surrender to you; the dear children delivered by my wife disappear the moment they are born; an evil power takes and hides them; please help me.’ You were merciful to him and while his wife was being heckled by others, You brought back their children and gave them. Hoping that You will be merciful to me too, I surrendered at Your lotus feet.”   

 

1426 * tuḷaṅgu nīṇmuḍi arasar tam kurisil * toṇḍai mannavan tiṇ tiṛal oruvaṛku *

 uḷaṅgkoḷ anbinōḍu innaruḷ surandu * aṅgōḍu nāḻigai ēḻuḍan iruppa ** 

 vaḷaṅgkoḷ mandiram maṭṛavaṛku aruḷic ceydavāṛu * aḍiyēn aṛindu *  ulagam

 aḷanda ponnaḍiyē aḍaindu uyndēn * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānē!    

“O Lord residing in the majestic city of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by lovely gardens! You decided to show Your love and mercy to a powerful, victorious and opulent king of Toṇḍai Nāḍu; instead of wasting his time only on materialistic duties, You taught him to chant the aṣṭākṣara mantra, explained its meaning, and helped him to attain its seven beneficial effects. Knowing about this, I surrendered unto Your lotus feet which measured the planetary systems.”[2]

 

1427 * māḍamāḷigai sūḻ tirumaṅgai mannan * onnalar taṅgaḷai vellum * 

 āḍalmā valavan kali kanṛi * aṇipoḻil tiruvaraṅgattammānai ** 

 nīḍu tol pugaḻāḻi vallānai * endaiyai neḍumālai ninainda * 

 pāḍal pattivai pāḍumin tonḍīr! * pāḍa nummiḍaip pāvam nillāvē

“O devotees of the Lord! Please recite these ten glorious and sweet Tamiḻ songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who is the chief of those in Tirumaṅgai with many multi-storeyed palaces, an expert in riding the horse called ‘Āḍalmā’ who was victorious and an adroit dancer—about the Lord who reclines in the temple in majestic Śrīraṅgam surrounded by beautiful gardens; who wields the glorious disc weapon; and my Lord, the glorious Śrī Nārāyaṇa, will not be afflicted by sinful reactions.” 

 

[1] Serpent Sumukha: He was supposed to be killed by Garuḍa, but Mātali, Indra’s chariot driver, wanted Sumukha to marry his daughter. So, he requested Indra to give ambrosia to Sumukha to make him immortal. When Garuḍa strongly objected and exposed his pride, Lord Viṣṇu made him realise that he was strong because of the Lord’s mercy. The Lord asked Indra to give ambrosia to Sumukha and also instructed Garuḍa to be his eternal guardian.

 Seven benefits of chanting the aṣṭākṣara mantra: 1, Getting rid of the illusion that the body is all 2, understanding that one is not independent 3, avoiding worship of demigods 4, detachment from material desires 5, avoiding the association of non-devotees 6, detachment from sense gratification and 7, the association of devotees.  

1428 * kaiyilaṅgu āḻi saṅgan * karumugil tiruniṛattan *

 poyyilan meyyan tan tāḷ * aḍaivarēl aḍimai ākkum **

 seyyalar kamalam ōṅgu * seṛi poḻil ten tiruppēr *

 paiyaravaṇaiyān nāmam * paravi nān uyndavāṛē!  

“Chanting the holy names of the Lord—who wields the disc and the conch; who is fresh rain cloud-hued; who is the Absolute Truth; who reveals Himself to His devotees; Who accepts those who surrender to His Lotus feet as His eternal servants; who reclines on the many-hooded serpent in Ten Tiruppēr with lotus flowers bloomed fields and many dense groves[1]—I have easily attained Him!”    

 

1429 vaṅgamār kaḍalhaḷ ēḻum * malaiyum vānahamum matṛṛum *

 aṅgaṇmā ñālam ellām * amudu seydu umiḻnda endai **

 tiṅgaḷ māmugil aṇavu * seṛi poḻil ten tiruppēr *

 eṅgaḷ māl iṛaivan nāmam * ētti nān uyndavāṛē!     

“Chanting the holy names of the Lord—who swallowed the seven seas, the seven mountains, the sky, the vast earth and everything else and brought them out later and who is present in Ten Tiruppēr with many dense groves reaching to the sky and the moon—how nicely I lived!”    

 

1430 oruvanai undippū mēl * ōṅguvittu āgam tannāl *

 oruvanaic cābam nīkki * umbar āḷ enṛu viṭṭān **

 peruvarai madiḷhaḷ sūḻnda * perunagar aravaṇai mēl *

 karuvarai vaṇṇan tenpēr * karudi nān uyndavāṛē!    

“Meditating on the holy names of the Lord—who created Brahmā in the lotus flower sprouted from His navel; who nullified the curse on Rudra by giving the blood from His chest and restored him as the chief of the upper planets; and who reclines like a black mountain on the serpent in Ten Tiruppēr surrounded by huge ramparts like hills—I have easily attained Him!”    

1431 ūnamar talai onṛu ēndi * ulagelām tiriyum īsan *

 īnamar sābam nīkkāy enna * oṇ punalai īndān **

 tēnamar poḻilhaḷ sūḻnda * seṛivayal ten tiruppēr *

 vānavar talaivan nāmam * vāḻtti nān uyndavāṛē!    

“Meditating on the holy names of the Lord—who created Brahmā in the lotus flower that sprouted from His navel; who nullified the curse on Rudra by giving the blood from His chest and restored him as the chief of the upper planets; and who reclines like a black mountain on the serpent in Ten Tiruppēr surrounded by huge ramparts like hills—I have easily attained Him!”    

 

1432 vakkaran vāy munkīṇḍa * māyanē! enṛu vānōr

 pukku * araṇ tandu aruḷāy ennap * pon āgattānai **

 nakkari uruvamāhi * nagam kiḷarndu iḍandu uganda *

 sakkarac celvan tenpērt * talaivan tāḷ aḍaindu uyndēnē  

“Surrendering to the lotus feet of the Lord—who was worshipped by the demigods praying, ‘O incredible Lord who cleaved the mouth of Dantavakra, please provide us protection;’ who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva, made a loud, shrill sound of laughter, and was huge, was happy to catch Hiraṇyakaśipu and tear off his chest; who wields the effulgent disc; and who is present in Ten Tiruppēr—I have easily attained Him!”    

 

1433 vilaṅgalāl kaḍal aḍaittu * viḷaṅgiḻai poruṭṭu * villāl

 ilaṅgai mānagarkku iṛaivan * irubhadu puyam tuṇittān **

 nalaṅgkoḷ nānmaṛai vallārhaḷ * ōttoli ēttak kēṭṭu *

 malaṅgu pāy vayal tiruppēr * maruvi nān vāḻndavāṛē!  

“I worshipped the Lord who, to get back mother Sītā, bereft of her resplendent jewels, built a bridge of rocks and hills across the ocean and cut off the twenty shoulders of Rāvaṇa, the king of the huge city of Laṅkā, with His bow; and who resides in Tiruppēr—where hearing the vibrant sound of the Vedic chanting by meritorious, expert Vedic brāhmaṇas, the fish in the many surrounding fields, jump and swim away in fear—and attained Him quickly!”    

 

 

1434 veṇṇey tān amudu seyya * veguṇḍu mattāycci ōcci *

 kaṇṇiyar kuṛuṅgayitṛṛāl * kaṭṭa veṭṭenṛu irundān **

 tiṇṇamā madiḷhaḷ sūḻnda * ten tiruppēruḷ * vēlai

 vaṇṇanār nāma nāḷum * vāy moḻindu uyndavāṛē!   

“By always chanting the holy names of the Lord—who allowed mother Yaśodā, who in anger raised the churning rod as if to beat Him, to tie Him up with a rope of many joints because He stole and gobbled up butter; who resides in Ten Tiruppēr surrounded by strong and huge ramparts; who is ocean-hued—I have easily attained Him!”     

 

1435 amponār ulagam ēḻum aṛiya * āyppāḍi tannuḷ *

 kombanār pinnai kōlam * kūḍudaṛku ēṛu konṛān **

 semponār madiḷgaḷ sūḻnda * ten tiruppēruḷ mēvum *

 empirān nāmam nāḷum * ētti nān uyndavāṛē!       

“By always chanting the holy names of the Lord—who, in a svayaṁvara ceremony (where the bride chooses a groom for her) attended by men from all the seven planetary systems) in the cowherd men’s community, with the desire to embrace the slender damsel Nappinnai, killed the seven demoniac bulls; who resides in Ten Tiruppēr surrounded by strong, golden ramparts—I have easily attained Him!”    

 

1436 nāl vagai vedam aindu vēḷvi * āṛaṅgam vallār *

 mēlai vānavaril mikka * vediyar ādi kālam **

 sēlugaḷ vayal tiruppērc * ceṅgaṇ mālōḍum vāḻvār *

 sīlamā tavattar sindaiyāḷi * en sindaiyānē     

“The Lord who has eternally occupied the hearts of the pure brāhmaṇas—who are experts in the four Vedas, the six Vedāṅgas, and the five fire sacrifices; who are more exalted than the demigods; and who live, since ancient times, with the lotus-eyed Lord in Tiruppēr with the fields abundant in carp fish—will live eternally in my heart too.”    

 

1437 * vaṇḍaṛai poḻil tiruppēr * vari aravaṇaiyil paḷḷi

 koṇḍu * uṛaihinṛa mālaik * koḍi madiḷ māḍa maṅgai **

 tiṇtiṛal tōḷ kaliyan * señjolāl moḻinda mālai *

 koṇḍivai pāḍi āḍak * kūḍuvar nīḷ visumbē

“Those who recite these ten glorious and sweet Tamiḻ songs and dance—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who appeared in Tirumaṅgai surrounded by ramparts and with many multi-storeyed palaces and who has strong shoulders—about the Lord who reclines on the serpent bed in Tiruppēr with groves swarmed by humming bees, will attain Vaikuṇṭha .”

“O heart! Go to Nandipura Viṇṇagaram the eternal abode of the glorious, merciful Lord who is the Supersoul of the blemishless earth, Agni, Vāyu, water, and ether; who is the controller of pure mind, sleep, and death; who was afraid of mother Yaśodā when she tied Him up with a rope in anger; who, still stole at the opportune moment and gobbled up curd; who danced with the pots; and who is broad-chested.” 

 

1439 uyyum vagaiyuṇḍu sona seyyil * ulagēḻum oḻiyāmai muna nāḷ *

 meyyin aḷavē amudu seyya vala * aiyan avan mēvu nagar tān **

 maiya varivaṇḍu madu uṇḍu kiḷaiyōḍu * malar kiṇḍi adan mēl *

 naivaḷam naviṭṛu poḻil * nandipura viṇṇagaram naṇṇu manamē!

“O heart! If you do what I say, you can become perfect! Go to Nandipura Viṇṇagaram[1]—which has many groves where swarms of beautiful black bumblebees search the flowers to drink the honey and then hum in different tunes—the eternal abode of the Lord who expertly swallowed all the seven planetary systems which perfectly fit in His stomach.”  

 

1440 umbar ulagēḻu kaḍal ēḻu malai ēḻum * oḻiyāmai muna nāḷ *

 tampon vayiṛāraḷavum uṇḍu avai umiḻnda * taḍamārvar tagai sēr **

 vambu malarhinṛa poḻil paimpon varutumbi maṇi * kaṅgul vayal sūḻ * 

 namban uṛaihinṛa nagar * nandipura viṇṇagaram naṇṇu manamē! 

“O heart! Go to Nandipura Viṇṇagaram—which is beautified by groves where a multitude of flowers blossom and golden-hued dragonflies roam around, and is surrounded by fertile fields—the eternal residence of the Lord who swallowed all the seven planetary systems, the seven oceans, the seven mountains and later brought them out; who has a broad chest; who is glorious; and who is trusted totally (by His devotees).”    

 

1441 piṛaiyin oḷi eyiṛilaha muṛugi edir porudumena * vanda asurar *

 iṛaigaḷ avai neṛu neṛana veṛiya avar vayiṛaḻala * ninṛa perumān **

 siṛai koḷ mayil kuyil payila malarhaḷ uga aḷi murala * aḍikoḷ neḍumā *

 naṛai sey poḻil maḻai tavaḻum * nandipura viṇṇagaram naṇṇu manamē!        

“O heart! Go to Nandipura Viṇṇagaram—where in the beautiful groves, well fed by the clouds, the iridescent tail-feathered peacocks and cuckoos are abundant; flowers have fallen down all over; the bumblebees hum; (the fruits in) the tall mango trees spread sweet smell—the residence of the Lord who disarmed and slaughtered the asuras with shining canine teeth who came to fight with Him and emerged victorious.”

 

1442 mūḷa eri sindi muni eydi amar seydumena * vanda asurar *

 tōḷum avar tāḷum muḍiyōḍu poḍiyāha * noḍiyāmaḷaveydān **

 vāḷum vari villum vaḷai āḻi kadai saṅgam * ivai aṅgai uḍaiyān *

 nāḷum uṛaiginṛa nagar * nandipura viṇṇagaram naṇṇu manamē! 

“O heart! Go to Nandipura Viṇṇagaram, the eternal residence of the Lord who showered a rain of arrows on the asuras who came to fight creating a lot of uproar by shouting and lighting fire here and there and cut off their shoulders, legs and heads in a second; who wields the five weapons, the Nandaka sword, the elegant Śārṅga bow, the Sudarśana cakra, the Kaumodakī club, and the Pāñcajanya conch.”     

                                                         

1443 tambiyoḍu tām oruvar tan tuṇaivi kādal * tuṇaiyāga muna nāḷ *

 vembi eri kānagam ulāvum avar tām * inidu mēvu nagar tān **

 kombu kudi koṇḍu kuyil kūva mayil ālum * eḻilār puṛavu sēr *

 nambi uṛaihinṛa nagar * nandipura viṇṇagaram naṇṇu manamē!  

“O heart! Go to Nandipura Viṇṇagaram—which has many beautiful groves where the cuckoos call loudly perched on the branches and the peacocks dance—which is the eternal residence of the all auspicious and all opulent Lord who as Rāma was roaming around in the hot and humid Daṇḍakāraṇya forest with His brother Lakṣmaṇa and dearest wife Sītā-devī.”   

1444 tandai manamundu tuyar nanda iruḷ vanda viṛal * nandan madalai *

 endai ivan enṛu amarar kanda malar koṇḍu toḻa * ninṛa nagar tān **

 manda muḻavōsai maḻaiyāga eḻu kār * mayilhaḷ āḍu poḻil sūḻ *

 nandi paṇi seyda nagar * nandipura viṇṇagaram naṇṇu manamē!  

“O heart! Go to Nandipura Viṇṇagaram—which is surrounded by many beautiful groves where the peacocks, which mate during the rainy season, on hearing the rhythmic sound of the drums start dancing thinking that the clouds are rumbling; and which temple has been renovated by a king called Nandi Varman—which is the eternal residence of Kaṇṇan, the son of Nanda Gopa whose sadness of not having a child was removed by the adorable baby Kaṇṇan, who came to Gokula in the night (from Mathura); and who is worshipped by the demigods as their Lord by offering fragrant flowers.”

 

1445 eṇṇil ninaivedi ini illai iṛai enṛu * muniyāḷar tiruvār *

 paṇṇil mali kīdamoḍu pāḍi avar āḍaloḍu * kūḍa eḻilār **

 maṇṇil idu pōla nagar illai ena * vānavarhaḷ tām malarhaḷ tūy *

 naṇṇi uṛaihinṛa nagar * nandipura viṇṇagaram naṇṇu manamē! 

“O heart! Go to Nandipura Viṇṇagaram, the eternal residence of the Lord who is realised in deep meditation as the most worshippable Lord by the great saints who glorify Him by songs in nice musical meter and dance according to the tune; the demigods glorify Nandipura Viṇṇagaram as the best holy city and worship the Lord with flowers.” 

 

1446 vaṅgamali pauvam adu māmugaḍin ucci puha * mikka perunīr *

 aṅgam aḻiyār avanadu āṇai talai sūḍum * aḍiyār aṛidiyēl **

 poṅgu punal undu maṇi kaṅgul iruḷ sīṛum oḷi * eṅgum uḷadāl *

 naṅgaḷ perumān uṛaiyum * nandipura viṇṇagaram naṇṇu manamē! 

“O heart! Please understand that the devotees who perfectly follow the orders of the Lord will not come to any harm even when the oceans swell and touch the sky during pralaya and so, go to Nandipura Viṇṇagaram, which is the eternal residence of the Lord; and which is illuminated by the gemstones brought by the gushing flow of river water.”

 

1447 * naṛai sey poḻil maḻai tavaḻum  * nandipura viṇṇagaram naṇṇi uṛaiyum *

 uṛai koḷ pugar āḻi suri saṅgam * avai aṅgai uḍaiyānai ** oḷi sēr

 kaṛai vaḷarum vēl valla * kaliyan oli mālai ivai aindum aindum *

 muṛaiyil ivai payila vala aḍiyavargaḷ koḍuvinaihaḷ * muḻudahalumē

“Those who recite these ten glorious and sweet songs—rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who possesses an effulgent and blood-stained spear—about the Lord who wields the brilliant disc, the conch, and other weapons and about eternally residing in Nandipura Viṇṇagaram with many groves covered by the clouds, will be relieved of all sinful reactions.”
