ṭamēva matvā paravāsudevam

    raṅgēsayam rājavadarhaṇīyam |

  prābōḍhikīm yōkruta sūkṭimālām

    bhaktāṅghrirēṇum bhagavantamīḍē ||

“I worship the dust of the lotus feet of Toṇḍaraḍippoḍi Āḻvār who—possesses transcendental knowledge—rendered the garland of ten songs to wake up the Lord of Śrīraṅgam—who is to be worshipped like a king—glorifying the transcendental qualities of that Lord Vāsudeva.”

maṇḍaṅguḍi enbar māmaṛaiyōr manniya sīr *

  toṇḍaraḍippoḍi tonnagaram * - vaṇḍu

  tiṇartta vayal tennaraṅgattammānaip * paḷḷi

  uṇarttum pirān uditta ūr

“The learned scholars praise Tirumaṇḍaṅguḍi, the unique city, as the sacred birthplace of the pure devotee Toṇḍaraḍippoḍi Āḻvār who wakes up the Lord in reclining posture in the divine city Śrīraṅgam which is surrounded by paddy fields swarmed by droves of Beetles.”   

917  * kadiravan guṇa disaic śikharam vandaṇaindān *

    gana iruḷ aganṛadu kālaiyam poḻudāy *

  mathu virindoḻugina māmalar ellām *

    vānavar arasargaḷ vandu vandīṇḍi **

  edir disai niṛaindanar ivaroḍum pugunda *

    iruṅgaḷiṭṛṛīṭṭamum piḍiyoḍu murasum *

  adirdalil alai kaḍal pōnṛuḷadeṅgum *

    araṅgattammā paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē      

In this set of ten songs Toṇḍaraḍippoḍi Āḻvār sings the glories of the Lord of Śrīraṅgam and requests Him to arise from His divine sleep and bless the devotees: “O Lord who reclines in Śrīraṅgam! The sun has ascended to the peak in the eastern direction; the dense darkness has dissipated; a pleasant fresh day has arrived; lovely flowers have blossomed and are dripping honey; the demigods and the kings pushed their way (into the inner sanctum) to stand crowding in the southern direction (in the vision of the Lord); the noise raised all around by the bull elephants and the cow elephants (the vehicles of the demigods and kings) and by the vibration of the kettledrums was akin to the noise from a stormy ocean; (So) Please arise from Your divine sleep!”      

918  koḻuṅkoḍi mullaiyin koḻumalar aṇavik *

    kūrndadu guṇa disai mārudam iduvō *

  eḻundana malaraṇaip paḷḷi koḷ annam *

    īnpani nanainda tam iruñsiṛagudaṛi **

  viḻuṅgiya mudalaiyin pilampurai pēḻvāy *

    veḷḷeyiṛu uṛa adan viḍattanukku anuṅgi *

  aḻuṅgiya ānaiyin arunduyar keḍutta *

    araṅgattammā paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē      

“The east wind has started blowing gently caressing the elegant jasmine flowers; the swans have woken up flapping their damp wings to shake off the water from the night’s dewfall; O Lord of Śrīraṅgam! —who relieved the distress of the elephant whose leg was pierced by the canine teeth in the cave-like mouth of the crocodile—Please arise from Your divine sleep!”               

919  suḍaroḷi parandana sūḻ disai ellām *

    tunniya tāragai minnoḷi suruṅgi *

  paḍaroḷi pasuttanan pani madi ivanō *

    pāyiṛuḷ ahanṛadu paimpoḻil kamugin **

  maḍaliḍaik kīṛi vaṇ pāḷaigaḷ nāṛa *

    vaigaṛai kūrndadu mārudam iduvō *

  aḍaloḷi tigaḻ taru tigiriyan taḍakkai *

    araṅgattammā paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē       

“The sun’s rays have spread everywhere; the stars and the moon have started fading; the darkness is dispelled; the cool morning breeze is blowing and opening up the pods of the areca nut tree, spreading the fragrance; O Lord of Śrīraṅgam! —who wields the effulgent disc in His large, elegant hand—Please arise from Your divine sleep!”               

920  mēṭṭiḷa mēdigaḷ taḷaiviḍum āyargaḷ *

    vēyṅguḻal ōsaiyum viḍai maṇik kuralum *

  īṭṭiya isai disai parandana vayaluḷ *

    irindana curumbinam ilaṅgaiyar kulattai **

  vāṭṭiya varicilai vānavar ēṛē *

    māmuni vēḷviyaik kāttu * avabhiratam

  āṭṭiya aḍutiṛal ayoddhi em arasē *

    araṅgattammā paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē      

“O Lord of demigods, who annihilated the Rākṣasa clan in Laṅkā! O king of Ayodhyā, who protected the sacrifice performed by the Sage Viśvāmitra and ensured avabhṛtha bath was taken (on completion of the sacrifice) and who is very powerful to destroy the enemies! The melody from the flutes of the cowherd men and the chiming of the bells tied around the neck of the young and tall bulls driven by them for grazing, combined and spread in all directions, and the swarms of bumblebees have started humming. O Lord of Śrīraṅgam! Please arise from Your divine sleep!”     

921  pulambina puṭkaḷum pūmpoḻilgaḷin vāy *

    pōyiṭṛṛuk kaṅgul puhundadu pulari *

  kalandadu guṇa disaik kanai kaḍal aravam *

    kaḷi vaṇḍu miḻaṭṛṛiya kalambagam punainda **

  alaṅgalan toḍaiyal koṇḍu aḍi iṇai paṇivān *

    amararhaḷ pugundanar ādalil ammā *

  ilaṅgaiyar kōn vaḻipāḍu sey kōyil *

    emperumān paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē        

“The birds in the groves, full of flowers, have woken up and are making a lot of noise; the night has passed and the day has come; the sound of the wavy ocean in the east is heard; the bumblebees drunk with honey are humming loudly, and the demigods, carrying lovely garlands made of a variety of flowers, have assembled to worship Your lotus feet. So, Lord of Śrīraṅgam! Our Lord, who reclines in the temple worshipped by the king of Laṅkā (Vibhīṣaṇa), please arise from Your divine sleep!”    

922  iraviyar maṇi neḍum tēroḍum ivarō *

    iṛaiyavar padinoru viḍaiyarum ivarō *

  maruviya mayilinan aṛumugan ivanō *

    marutarum vasukkaḷum vandu vandīṇḍi **

  puraviyōḍu āḍalum pāḍalum tērum *

    kumara daṇḍam pugundīṇḍiya veḷḷam *

  aruvarai anaiya nin kōyil mun ivarō *

    araṅgattammā paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē      

“The twelve Ādityas with their opulent chariots; the eleven Rudras, the managers of the universe; the six-headed Skanda, or Kārttikeya whose vehicle is the peacock; the forty-nine Maruts, and the eight Vasus have come with their chariots and stand crowding (the inner sanctum) and pushing each other.[1] The demigods have come singing and dancing and are standing in the line of Your vision in this mountain-like temple. Lord of Śrīraṅgam, please arise from Your divine sleep!”    

923  andarattamararhaḷ kūṭṭaṅgaḷ ivaiyō *

    arundava munivarum marutarum ivarō *

  indiran ānaiyum tānum vandivanō *

    emperumān una kōyilin vāsal **

  sundarar nerukka viccādarar nūkka *

    iyakkarum mayaṅginar tiruvaḍit toḻuvān *

  andaram pāriḍam illai maṭṛṛiduvō *

    araṅgattammā paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē      

“O my Lord! Indra and his elephant; the demigods and their retinue; great saints; the Maruts; the Yakṣas; the Gandharvas and the Vidyādharas have come pushing each other and stand crowding to worship Your lotus feet; the heaven and the earth are fully crowded. Lord of Śrīraṅgam, please arise from Your divine sleep!”    

924  vampaviḻ vānavar vāyuṛai vaḻaṅga *

    mānidhi kapilai oṇkaṇṇāḍi mudalā *

  emperumān paḍimakkalam kāṇḍaṛku *

    ēṛpanavāyina koṇḍu nanmunivar **

  tumburu nāradar pugundanar ivarō *

    tōnṛinan iraviyum tulaṅgoḷi parappi *

  ambara talattil ninṛu agalhinṛadu iruḷ pōy *

    araṅgattammā paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē      

“The ever-young demigods and kāmadhenu have brought dūrvā grass (for Your cows) and very valuable gemstones and jewels to offer (to You); great ṛṣis and tumburu Nārada have brought an effulgent mirror for You to look at Yourself and other objects and suitable equipment like tumburu (to sing Your glories); also, the sun has risen spreading his bright rays everywhere, and the darkness has left the sky. Lord of Śrīraṅgam, please arise from Your divine sleep!”         

925  * ēdamil taṇṇumai ekkam mattaḷi *

    yāḻ kuḻal muḻavamōḍu isai disai keḻumi *

  gītaṅgaḷ pāḍinar kinnarar geruḍarhaḷ *

gandaruvar avar kaṅguluḷ ellām **

  mātavar vānavar cāraṇar iyakkar *

    sittarum mayaṅginar tiruvaḍit toḻuvān *

  ādalil avarkku nāḷōlakkam aruḷa *

    araṅgattammā paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē      

“The Kinnaras, Garuḍas, and the Gandharvas,—who are very expert in singing the glories of the Lord, echoing in all the directions, accompanied by their musical instruments like the unique small drum, one-string instrument (ektara), mṛdaṅga, vīṇā, and flutes—great ṛṣis, demigods, Cāraṇas, Yakṣas, and Siddhas have been waiting throughout the night eager to worship Your lotus feet. Lord of Śrīraṅgam, to bless them with Your audience, please arise from Your divine sleep!”        

926  * kaḍimalark kamalaṅgaḷ malarndana ivaiyō *

    kadiravan kanai kaḍal muḷaittanan ivanō *

  tuḍi iḍaiyār suri kuḻal piḻindudaṛit *

    tuhil uḍuttēṛinar sūḻ punal araṅgā **

  toḍaiyotta tuḷavamum kūḍaiyum polindu *

    tōnṛiya tōḷ toṇḍaraḍippoḍi ennum

  aḍiyanai * aḷiyan enṛaruḷi un aḍiyārkku

    āṭ paḍuttāy * paḷḷi eḻundaruḷāyē      

“O Lord of Śrīraṅgam surrounded by the river Kāverī! The fragrant lotus flowers have blossomed; the sun has risen above the stormy sea; the slender-waisted ladies have squeezed and dried their curly hair and have come out of the water fully dressed. Please consider this Toṇḍaraḍippoḍi, Your servant, —carrying on his shoulder the flower basket filled with well-made garlands—as an eligible person to receive Your mercy; to make me the servant of Your pure devotees, please arise from Your divine sleep!”
