Emberumānār aruḷic ceydadu
mundutṛṛa neñjē! muyatṛṛi taritturaittu *
vandittu vāyāra vāḻtti * - sanda
murugūrum sōlai sūḻ moypūm porunal *
kurugūran māṛan pēr kūṛu
“O my heart which is eager to serve Nammāḻvār! Please (read and) retain (in mind) his divine rendition which starts with the word ‘muyatṛṛi,’ recite, and worship and praise full-heartedly Nammāḻvār, the master of the beautiful city of Tirunagari which has many groves of sandalwood trees overflowing with honey, is surrounded by many water bodies, and where the river Tāmraparṇī flows; keep reciting the divine name of Nammāḻvār.”
2585 * muyatṛṛi sumandu eḻundu * mundutṛṛa neñjē! *
iyatṛṛuvāy emmoḍu nī kūḍi ** - nayappuḍaiya
nāvīn toḍai kiḷavi * uḷ podivōm * naṛpūvaip
pūvīnṛa vaṇṇan pugaḻ 1
“O my heart, You are surging ahead (of me) with great enthusiasm to sing the glories of the Lord! Please join me and together we can render (the songs); let us weave the auspicious qualities of the ironwood flower-hued (blue) Lord, with choice words, into divine songs and sing with love.”
2586 pugaḻvōm paḻippōm * pugaḻōm paḻiyōm *
igaḻvōm madippōm * madiyōm - igaḻōm ** matṛṛu
eṅgaḷ māl! seṅgaṇ māl! * sīṛal nī tīvinaiyōm *

“O red lotus-eyed Lord dear to us! (Since we are not qualified) If we glorify You, (actually) it will be degrading You; (realising this) if we do not glorify You, we will not degrade You; (even) if we think of You respectfully, (really) we will be insulting You; (so) if we do not think of You respectfully, we will not be insulting You. O Lord! Please do not get angry (with our predicament); it is all because of our sins.”

ivai enṛivai aṛivanēlum ** - ivai ellām

ennāl seyaṛpāladu en? 3
“My Lord! Though I understand that it is good that (ignorant people like me) do not think about You or glorify You and that it is not good that we think about You and glorify You, we can neither ‘not think about You and glorify You’ nor ‘think about You and glorify You;’ what this insignificant I can do on my own?”
2588 ennin mihu pugaḻār yāvarē? * pinnaiyum matṛṛu

“Since my heart is surrendered to my dark-hued Kaṇṇan who is deep like an ocean and radiant like a huge bright light, who could be more fortunate than me? On analysing, (I realise that) there is no one more fortunate than me.”
2589 petṛṛa tāy nīyē * piṛappitta tandai nī *
matṛṛaiyār āvārum nī pēsil ** - etṛṛēyō!
māya! māmāyavaḷai * māya mulai vāy vaitta *
nī ammā! kāṭṭum neṛi 5
“O mystical Lord! O my mother! Thinking about the benefits You have showered on me - like a mother You have always done what I like, also like a father You have always done what is beneficial for me, and You are my teacher too; to kill the evil demon Pūtanā, You sucked her (poisoned) nipple; (likewise) Your teachings to me are wonderful!”
2590 neṛi kāṭṭi nīkkudiyō? * nin pāl karumā
muṛimēni kāṭṭudiyō? ** mēl nāḷ - aṛiyōmai *
en seyvān eṇṇināy? kaṇṇanē! * īdu uraiyāy
en seydāl en paḍōm yām? 6
“O Kaṇṇā! Do You want to leave us on our own by teaching us rules and regulations like karma and jñāna? (or) Do You want to bless us by showing Your form like a tender shoot from a dark mango tree? What do You want to do with us, eternally ignorant? Kindly reveal Your plan for us; even if You wish to benefit us, we will end up harming ourselves.”

“O Lord, who kept the reddish-hued lotus-residing mother Lakṣmī on His chest and lifted mother earth (on His horn)! My consciousness has already surrendered at Your lotus feet but this sinful body is still far away.”
2592 arugum suvaḍum terivuṇarōm * anbē
perugum miha * iduven? pēsīr ** - paruhalām
paṇbuḍaiyīr! pāraḷandīr! * pāviyēm kaṇ kāṇbariya *
nuṇpuḍaiyīr! nummai numakku 8
“O Lord with relishable auspicious qualities! One who measured all the planetary systems! One with great opulences which the sinful we cannot see with our eyes! We do not know how to attain You; (still) my love for You keeps growing; What’s the reason? Please tell me.”
2593 numakkaḍiyōm enṛenṛu * nonduraittu en? * mālār
tamakku avar tām * sārvariyarānāl? ** - emakku ini
yādānum * āhiḍu kāṇ neñjē! * avar tiṛattē

“O my heart! What is the point in lamenting that the Lord is unattainable? Let anything happen to me; You keep thinking about the Lord and keep chanting, ‘I am Your surrendered servant.’”

“O my good heart! How many to serve the Lord - the thirty-three demigods including the eight Vasus, the eleven Rudras, the twelve Ādityas, and the two Aśvinī-kumāras, and we too? Alas! How does our surrender matters (to Him)? We are very sinful.”

vāḻā vahai validal nin valiyē ** - āḻāda

nīrum nīyāy ninṛa nī 11
“You are keeping the earth floating; You are the water; You are the fire; You are the air; You are the sky; when You are everything, is it a great act for You to take away the life of the cruel Rāvaṇa, who was proud of his valor? (Not at all)”
2596 nī anṛē āḻtuyaril * vīḻvippān ninṛu uḻanṛāy? *
pōyonṛu solli en? pō neñjē! ** - nī enṛum
kāḻttu upadēsam tarinum * kaikkoḷḷāy * kaṇṇan tāḷ
vāḻttuvadē kaṇḍāy vaḻakku 12
“O heart! Aren’t your desires (leading to sense gratifying acts) responsible for pushing me into the miserable ocean of material life? Because of your insolence, you never listen to my advice; (anyway) let it be; what’s the point in arguing about it now? (At least now understand that) praising and worshipping the lotus feet of the Lord is the only good thing (to do).”

“O my Lord! What I want to propose is not unreasonable; it is seen that when the lesser people request something, the noblemen fulfill it even at their loss. However, I am not suggesting that there would be some loss for You; I request You to kindly accept me as Your servant and reveal Your effulgent form.”
2598 sāyāl kariyānai * uḷḷaṛiyārāy neñjē! *
pēyār mulai koḍuttār pēyarāy ** - nī yār? pōyt
tēmpūṇ suvaittu * ūn aṛindaṛindum * tīvinaiyām
pāmbār vāyk kainīṭṭal pārtti 14
“O heart! The demon Pūtanā, instead of enjoying the love of Kaṇṇan, the (little) black elephant, with the evil plan (of killing Him) offered Him her poison-laced nipple (and got killed); are you related to her? When you are not (spiritually) qualified because of getting mired in sense gratification, you want to engage in transcendental activities (like desiring to look at the divine form of the Lord and thereby invite His wrath) which is akin to keeping one’s hand in the mouth of a poisonous snake.”

“O heart! If we glorify the divine qualities of the reddish-eyed Lord—reclining on the stormy Ocean of Milk with its waves caressing His body and lotus feet—our insurmountable miseries will be eliminated; His fame will not be affected (by our glorification) in any way; by seeing and experiencing You can realise this fact (It’s obvious).”
2600 sīrāl piṛandu * siṛappāl vaḷarādu *
pērvāmanāgākkāl pērāḷā! ** - mārbārap
pulgi nī uṇḍu umiḻnda * bhūmi nīr ēṛparidē? *
sollu nīyām aṛiyac cūḻndu 16
“O Supreme Lord! If You haven’t taken birth and grown in royal opulence or assumed the name Vāmana would it not have been possible (for You) to retrieve the planetary systems (from Bali)—which You have embraced (as a boar incarnation), swallowed (during pralaya) and later brought out—by (any means other than) begging? Kindly explain this so that we can understand.”
2601 sūḻndu aḍiyār vēṇḍinakkāl * tōnṛādu viṭṭālum *
vāḻndiḍuvar pinnum tam vāy tiṛavār ** - sūḻndu eṅgum
vāḷ varaihaḷ pōl arakkan * van talaihaḷ tām iḍiya *

“If the mighty Rāma, who attacked Rāvaṇa and cut off his huge and luminant heads with His mountain-like bow
(comes to the world) calls all the people and tells them, ‘O people! You all have to surrender to me,’ and even if nobody surrenders, He will not be agitated but remain calm; He will never complain about this (to mother Sītā).”
Or
is worshipped and requested by His devotees to appear before them and, if He doesn’t respond, the devotees will not be disappointed but remain calm, continuing their worship; they will never reveal this to anyone.”

pāmbāl āppuṇḍu pāḍutṛṛālum ** - sōmbādu ip

“Even when tied with a rope (by mother Yaśodā) which left a glorious scar and bound by the serpent Kāliya and harassed, You created many types of living beings without procrastinating. O Cause of all Causes! Who knows Your divine form? Please tell.”
2603 sollil kuṛai illai * sūdaṛiyā neñjamē! *
elli pagal ennādu eppōdum ** - tollaik kaṇ
māttānaikkellām * ōr aivaraiyē māṛāha *
kāttānaik kāṇḍum nī kāṇ 19
“O naïve heart! If we talk about the Lord our speech will be purified (or) our miseries will be eliminated; we can see the Lord who was protecting day and night the Pāṇḍavas who fought against Duryodhana and his big army; yes, you can see.”
2604 kāṇap puhil aṛivu * kaik koṇḍa nalneñjam *
nāṇappaḍumanṛē? nām pēsil ** - māṇi
uruvāhik koṇḍu * ulagam nīr ētṛṛa sīrān *
tiruvāgam tīṇḍitṛṛuc cenṛu 20
“O wise heart! If we understand that the Supreme Lord went as Vāmana, got the planetary systems by begging, and expanded and touched all the worlds with His body, then we would be ashamed of our words (by which we ask the Lord to appear before us instead of awaiting His mercy).”
2605 senṛaṅgu vennaragil * sērāmal kāppadaṛku *

“The lotus feet of the rain cloud-hued Lord which covered the earth and the ocean surrounding the world are now tightly placed in my heart to save me from falling into the hellish planets.”

tarukkum iḍam pāṭṭinoḍum * valvinaiyār tām * vītṛ
ṛirukkum iḍam kāṇādu iḷaittu 22
“The merciful Lord has entered my heart! All my terrible sins, which were torturing me, have been displaced and are roaming around looking for a place to live; probably they are wailing in sorrow and leg pain now.”
2607 iḷaippāy iḷaiyāppāy * neñjamē! sonnēn *
iḷaikka naman tamarhaḷ patṛṛi - iḷaippeyda **
nāytandu mōdāmal * nalhuvān nalkāppān *
tāy tandai evvuyirkkum tān 23
“O heart! When the Yamadūtas catch hold of us it is excruciating and further, they unleash their hounds on us which mangle us sorely; if the Lord saves us from this terrible ordeal or not, the truth is that He is the mother and father of all living beings. I have told you this now; if you have faith You will be saved, if not you will suffer.”
2608 tānē tanit tōnṛal * tan aḷappu onṛillādān *
tānē piṛarhaṭkum tatṛṛōnṛal ** - tānē
iḷaikkil pār kīḻ mēlām * mīṇḍu amaippānānāl *
aḷakkiṛpār pārin mēl ār? 24
“There is nobody equal or superior to the Lord; He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead; He has pervaded into all objects; all good or bad things happen in this world according to His will; who in this world can estimate His opulences?”
2609 ārānum * ādānum seyya * agal iḍattai
ārāyndu * adu tiruttal āvadē? ** - sīrār
manattalai * vantunbattai mātṛṛinēn * vānōr
inat talaivan kaṇṇanāl yān 25
“Let others do whatever they wish; in this vast world is it possible to check others’ activities and correct them? I have rid my heart of the insurmountable miseries with the grace of Kaṇṇan, the Lord of all nitya-muktas.”

“My heart and I have agreed to beat my terrible sins with the staff of mercy granted by the Lord who has a beautiful dark body hue and chase them away to the wilderness.”

seṛikaḻalhaḷ tāḷ nimirttuc * cenṛu ulagam ellām *

“O Trivikrama! We do not know which of the following pleased You when You stretched and measured the planetary systems – measuring the entire earth with Your lotus foot or the upper planetary systems with Your crown and the lotus foot?”

inṛē nām kāṇādiruppaduvum ** - enṛēnum
kaṭkaṇṇāl * kāṇāda avvuruvai * neñjennum
uṭkaṇṇēl kāṇum uṇarndu 28
“When our heart, our inner eye opens up (when we fully understand the name, form, and glories) and we visualise the beautiful form of the Lord, which the material eyes cannot see, then the dark-hued, disc-wielding wonderful form of the Lord can be seen by the material eyes too. We are unhappy as we are unable to see Him now because of our non-realisation of the Lord.”
2613 uṇara oruvarkku * eḷiyanē? sevvē *
iṇarum tuḻāy alaṅgal endai ** - uṇarat
tanakku eḷiyar evvaḷavar * avvaḷavan ānāl *
enakkeḷiyan emperumān iṅgu 29
“Does the Lord reveal Himself to those who try by (philosophical approach or undergoing austerities) their efforts? (No); the Lord, adorned with a garland of tulasī which continues to grow (because of His body contact), reveals Himself as much as His devotees love Him. So, I can understand the Lord easily.”

seṅgaṇmāl * sīrkkum siṛiduḷḷam ** - aṅgē
maḍi aḍakki niṛpadanil * valvinaiyār tām * mīṇḍu

“My sins cannot remain comfortably anymore in my heart because the space is insufficient to accommodate the auspicious qualities of my Lord whose eyes are reddish; the tough sins should get out instead of trying to remain crowded.”

“We have found out the best way to eliminate our tough sins; we have become the footprint and shadow of the Lord who danced with pots on His head and returned to His abode of the Milk Ocean.”

“Despite telling my heart to surrender to Dāmodara who favours those who surrender to Him, it ignores my request and continues to engage in sense gratification; what to do in this situation?”
2617 yādānum onṛaṛiyil * tannuhakkil en kolō? *
yādānum nērndaṇuhāvāṛu tān? ** - yādānum

“The Lord with His disc weapon minces to pieces the asuras who always engage in evil acts and never try to become good; why do the people not approach the Lord? Because, despite possessing intelligence and the quality of being happy, most of the people are asuric in nature.

“O ocean-hued Supreme Personality of Godhead! One who can eliminate even our terrible sins! When I approached You and heard about the elegance of Your yoga-nidrā on the Ocean of Milk, my legs faltered, heart spluttered, and eyes reeled.”
2619 ninṛum irundum * kiḍandum tiritandum *
onṛumō ātṛṛān en neñjahalān ** - anṛu aṅgai
vanpuḍaiyāl ponpeyarōn * vāy tagarttu mārviḍandān *
anbuḍaiyan anṛē avan? 35
“The Lord struck the mouth with His elegant hands and tore off the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu is very loving to His devotees and never gets satisfied with His support to them. He is sometimes standing, sitting, reclining, or walking, but never leaves my heart.”

“Instead of wondering if the Lord is very difficult to approach or easy or neither easy nor difficult or is He not at all possible to approach, we should know without any doubt that He is very easy to approach which has been confirmed in His appearance as Kaṇṇan; so, if we surrender to Him, we can establish any kind of relationship with Him as we desire (neutral, servant, friend, parent, and lover).

“O good heart! (You know that) It is very rare to be born with six senses (as a human being); we are fortunate to be one; (so) be firmly situated in devotion and always engage in glorifying the merciful Lord adorned with a garland of tulasī leaves swarmed by bumblebees.”
2622 amaikkum poḻuduṇḍē? * ārāyil neñjē! *
imaikkum poḻudum iḍaicci - kumaittiṛaṅgaḷ **

“O heart! Can we waste even a second? Try to get your sins nullified by always talking about—even if to make fun of—the naughty activities of Kaṇṇan—adorned with a fragrant garland of tulasī leaves—and the punishments given by mother Yaśodā.”

“O heart! Are we committing a mistake by rather than praying to the Lord adorned with a fresh garland of tulasī leaves and when mercifully taken by Him to Vaikuṇṭha and serving Him lovingly, (staying here and) just always glorifying His auspicious qualities? Please tell me.”

This material creation will not be subservient to anyone else.”

“The worldly people, though endowed with a heart to follow a good path do not use it to think of the Lord and a mouth with a tongue, do not analyse, understand, and glorify the Lord; aren’t they committing a great sin by wasting the remaining lifetime too?”

“O heart! The truth that I want to tell you daily is that the Supreme Lord, who is ocean-hued and lotus-eyed, is our shelter who should never be left, and He saves us from the miserable cycle of birth and death; always remember this.”

Please do not expect these worldly people to think of You, worship You, and beg for some benefit (because they run behind the demigods for their needs); Do they have any realisation to come to You and worship You? (Not at all); are they in a place where they can get the right realisation? (No, they are in a place of passion and ignorance covering goodness). (But) Will we ever be afflicted by that kind of foolish thinking? (Never, since we are firmly established as Your surrendered devotee).”

“Our eyes wish to see and worship the divine form of the Lord who went as Vāmana and begged land and who sucked milk and the life-air from the poison-laced nipple of the demon Pūtanā and do not wish to see anything else! Will the mouth desire to gobble up food instead of singing His glories?”

“Lord Kṛṣṇa keeps changing His auspicious forms (to guide and) to prevent the people from following atheistic paths; He is inaccessible to demoniac people; He whose activities are incredible once extended His form and measured all the planetary systems; it is not possible to know how He guides us but (if we follow) the result will be beneficial; it’s wonderful!”

“O heart! Lord Nṛsiṁha, who firmly held Hiraṇyakaśipu (on His lap), killed Him by splitting open his chest with blood sprouting and gushing out all around, will He not eliminate the terrible sins that hold us back in this material world?”

“O foolish heart! If you decide that attaining Vaikuṇṭha is the best for you, fulfilling that wish is not at all difficult for the Lord; or if you reject Vaikuṇṭha and want to enjoy opulences in this material world, that is also not difficult for Kaṇṇan; just learn to glorify His lotus feet.”

“The terrible sins (which have been chased away from afflicting me) have angry red eyes and sullen faces; who can approach and torture me when the ocean of the auspicious qualities of the Supreme Lord has flooded my consciousness?”

“I have seated the Lord—with thick golden hair who is called by a thousand names; who wields the disc whose effulgence has covered that of the sun and the moon; and, who is the mother and father capable of removing my miseries—in my heart; now, let anything happen to me (I don’t care).”

Hasn’t the effulgent lotus flower sprouted from Your navel? (Śiva appeared from Brahmā who appeared from Your naval lotus; this proves that You are the only cause of all).”

“If the people do not get rid of their miseries due to terrible sins of past lives by thinking about and singing the glories of the Lord—who is rain cloud-hued, wields the disc weapon in His hand, has a vast stomach which accommodates all the worlds (during pralaya), reclines on the bed of Ananta Śeṣa, and is full of auspicious qualities—what will they think about to pass the time?”
