 mundutṛṛa neñjē! muyatṛṛi taritturaittu * 

 vandittu vāyāra vāḻtti * - sanda 

 murugūrum sōlai sūḻ moypūm porunal * 

 kurugūran māṛan pēr kūṛu 

“O my heart which is eager to serve Nammāḻvār! Please (read and) retain (in mind) his divine rendition which starts with the word ‘muyatṛṛi,’ recite, and worship and praise full-heartedly Nammāḻvār, the master of the beautiful city of Tirunagari which has many groves of sandalwood trees overflowing with honey, is surrounded by many water bodies, and where the river Tāmraparṇī flows; keep reciting the divine name of Nammāḻvār.”      

2585 * muyatṛṛi sumandu eḻundu * mundutṛṛa neñjē! * 

 iyatṛṛuvāy emmoḍu nī kūḍi ** - nayappuḍaiya 

 nāvīn toḍai kiḷavi * uḷ podivōm * naṛpūvaip 

 pūvīnṛa vaṇṇan pugaḻ       1 

“O my heart, You are surging ahead (of me) with great enthusiasm to sing the glories of the Lord! Please join me and together we can render (the songs); let us weave the auspicious qualities of the ironwood flower-hued (blue) Lord, with choice words, into divine songs and sing with love.”   

2586 pugaḻvōm paḻippōm * pugaḻōm paḻiyōm * 

 igaḻvōm madippōm * madiyōm - igaḻōm ** matṛṛu 

 eṅgaḷ māl! seṅgaṇ māl! * sīṛal nī tīvinaiyōm *

 eṅgaḷ māl kaṇḍāy ivai       2

“O red lotus-eyed Lord dear to us! (Since we are not qualified) If we glorify You, (actually) it will be degrading You; (realising this) if we do not glorify You, we will not degrade You; (even) if we think of You respectfully, (really) we will be insulting You; (so) if we do not think of You respectfully, we will not be insulting You. O Lord! Please do not get angry (with our predicament); it is all because of our sins.”        

 

2587 ivai anṛē nalla * ivai anṛē tīya * 

 ivai enṛivai aṛivanēlum ** - ivai ellām 

 ennāl aḍaippu nīkka * oṇṇādu iṛaiyavanē! * 

 ennāl seyaṛpāladu en?       3

“My Lord! Though I understand that it is good that (ignorant people like me) do not think about You or glorify You and that it is not good that we think about You and glorify You, we can neither ‘not think about You and glorify You’ nor ‘think about You and glorify You;’ what this insignificant I can do on my own?”  

 

2588 ennin mihu pugaḻār yāvarē? * pinnaiyum matṛṛu 

 eṇṇil * mihu pugaḻēn yān allāl ** - enna 

 karuñjōdik * kaṇṇan kaḍal puraiyum * sīlap 

 peruñjōdikku en neñju āḷpetṛṛu     4

“Since my heart is surrendered to my dark-hued Kaṇṇan who is deep like an ocean and radiant like a huge bright light, who could be more fortunate than me? On analysing, (I realise that) there is no one more fortunate than me.”  

 

2589 petṛṛa tāy nīyē * piṛappitta tandai nī * 

 matṛṛaiyār āvārum nī pēsil ** - etṛṛēyō! 

 māya! māmāyavaḷai * māya mulai vāy vaitta * 

 nī ammā! kāṭṭum neṛi       5

“O mystical Lord! O my mother! Thinking about the benefits You have showered on me - like a mother You have always done what I like, also like a father You have always done what is beneficial for me, and You are my teacher too; to kill the evil demon Pūtanā, You sucked her (poisoned) nipple; (likewise) Your teachings to me are wonderful!”  

 

2590 neṛi kāṭṭi nīkkudiyō? * nin pāl karumā 

 muṛimēni kāṭṭudiyō? ** mēl nāḷ - aṛiyōmai * 

en seyvān eṇṇināy? kaṇṇanē! * īdu uraiyāy 

 en seydāl en paḍōm yām?       6

“O Kaṇṇā! Do You want to leave us on our own by teaching us rules and regulations like karma and jñāna? (or) Do You want to bless us by showing Your form like a tender shoot from a dark mango tree? What do You want to do with us, eternally ignorant? Kindly reveal Your plan for us; even if You wish to benefit us, we will end up harming ourselves.”      

 

2591 yāmē aruvinaiyōm sēyōm * en neñjinār 

 tāmē * aṇukkarāyc cārndoḻindār ** - pūmēya 

 semmādai * nin mārvil sērvittu * pāriḍanda 

 ammā! nin pādattarugu       7

“O Lord, who kept the reddish-hued lotus-residing mother Lakṣmī on His chest and lifted mother earth (on His horn)! My consciousness has already surrendered at Your lotus feet but this sinful body is still far away.” 

 

2592 arugum suvaḍum terivuṇarōm * anbē 

 perugum miha * iduven? pēsīr ** - paruhalām 

 paṇbuḍaiyīr! pāraḷandīr! * pāviyēm kaṇ kāṇbariya * 

 nuṇpuḍaiyīr! nummai numakku      8

“O Lord with relishable auspicious qualities! One who measured all the planetary systems! One with great opulences which the sinful we cannot see with our eyes! We do not know how to attain You; (still) my love for You keeps growing; What’s the reason? Please tell me.”     

 

2593 numakkaḍiyōm enṛenṛu * nonduraittu en? * mālār 

 tamakku avar tām * sārvariyarānāl? ** - emakku ini 

 yādānum * āhiḍu kāṇ neñjē! * avar tiṛattē 

 yādānum sindittiru       9

“O my heart! What is the point in lamenting that the Lord is unattainable? Let anything happen to me; You keep thinking about the Lord and keep chanting, ‘I am Your surrendered servant.’”

 

2594 irunālvar * īraindin mēl oruvar * eṭṭō 

 ḍoru nālvar * ōriruvar allāl ** - tirumāṛku 

 yāmār? vaṇakkamār? * ēpāvam nanneñjē! * 

 nāmā miha uḍaiyōm nāḻ       10

“O my good heart! How many to serve the Lord - the thirty-three demigods including the eight Vasus, the eleven Rudras, the twelve Ādityas, and the two Aśvinī-kumāras, and we too? Alas! How does our surrender matters (to Him)? We are very sinful.”      

 

2595 nāḻālamar muyanṛa * vallarakkan innuyirai * 

 vāḻā vahai validal nin valiyē ** - āḻāda 

 pārum nī vānum nī * kālum nī tīyum nī * 

 nīrum nīyāy ninṛa nī       11

“You are keeping the earth floating; You are the water; You are the fire; You are the air; You are the sky; when You are everything, is it a great act for You to take away the life of the cruel Rāvaṇa, who was proud of his valor? (Not at all)”   

 

2596 nī anṛē āḻtuyaril * vīḻvippān ninṛu uḻanṛāy? * 

 pōyonṛu solli en? pō neñjē! ** - nī enṛum 

 kāḻttu upadēsam tarinum * kaikkoḷḷāy * kaṇṇan tāḷ 

 vāḻttuvadē kaṇḍāy vaḻakku      12

“O heart! Aren’t your desires (leading to sense gratifying acts) responsible for pushing me into the miserable ocean of material life? Because of your insolence, you never listen to my advice; (anyway) let it be; what’s the point in arguing about it now? (At least now understand that) praising and worshipping the lotus feet of the Lord is the only good thing (to do).”      

 

2597 vaḻakkoḍu māṛu koḷ anṛu * aḍiyār vēṇḍa * 

 iḻakkavum kāṇḍum iṛaiva! - iḻappuṇḍē? ** 

 emmāṭkoṇḍāhilum * yān vēṇḍa en kaṇgaḷ * 

 tammāl kāṭṭu un mēniccāy      13

“O my Lord! What I want to propose is not unreasonable; it is seen that when the lesser people request something, the noblemen fulfill it even at their loss. However, I am not suggesting that there would be some loss for You; I request You to kindly accept me as Your servant and reveal Your effulgent form.”        

 

2598 sāyāl kariyānai * uḷḷaṛiyārāy neñjē! * 

 pēyār mulai koḍuttār pēyarāy ** - nī yār? pōyt

 tēmpūṇ suvaittu * ūn aṛindaṛindum * tīvinaiyām

 pāmbār vāyk kainīṭṭal pārtti      14

“O heart! The demon Pūtanā, instead of enjoying the love of Kaṇṇan, the (little) black elephant, with the evil plan (of killing Him) offered Him her poison-laced nipple (and got killed); are you related to her? When you are not (spiritually) qualified because of getting mired in sense gratification, you want to engage in transcendental activities (like desiring to look at the divine form of the Lord and thereby invite His wrath) which is akin to keeping one’s hand in the mouth of a poisonous snake.”   

 

2599 pārttōr ediridā neñjē! * paḍu tuyaram 

 pērttōdap * pīḍaḻivām pēccillai ** - ārttu ōdam 

 tam mēni * tāḷ taḍavat tām kiḍandu * tammuḍaiya

 semmēnik kaṇ vaḷarvār sīr       15

“O heart! If we glorify the divine qualities of the reddish-eyed Lord—reclining on the stormy Ocean of Milk with its waves caressing His body and lotus feet—our insurmountable miseries will be eliminated; His fame will not be affected (by our glorification) in any way; by seeing and experiencing You can realise this fact (It’s obvious).”  

 

2600 sīrāl piṛandu * siṛappāl vaḷarādu * 

 pērvāmanāgākkāl pērāḷā! ** - mārbārap 

 pulgi nī uṇḍu umiḻnda * bhūmi nīr ēṛparidē? * 

 sollu nīyām aṛiyac cūḻndu      16

“O Supreme Lord! If You haven’t taken birth and grown in royal opulence or assumed the name Vāmana would it not have been possible (for You) to retrieve the planetary systems (from Bali)—which You have embraced (as a boar incarnation), swallowed (during pralaya) and later brought out—by (any means other than) begging? Kindly explain this so that we can understand.”  

 

2601 sūḻndu aḍiyār vēṇḍinakkāl * tōnṛādu viṭṭālum * 

 vāḻndiḍuvar pinnum tam vāy tiṛavār ** - sūḻndu eṅgum 

 vāḷ varaihaḷ pōl arakkan * van talaihaḷ tām iḍiya * 

 tāḷ varai vil ēndinār tām      17

“If the mighty Rāma, who attacked Rāvaṇa and cut off his huge and luminant heads with His mountain-like bow

(comes to the world) calls all the people and tells them, ‘O people! You all have to surrender to me,’ and even if nobody surrenders, He will not be agitated but remain calm; He will never complain about this (to mother Sītā).” 

Or

is worshipped and requested by His devotees to appear before them and, if He doesn’t respond, the devotees will not be disappointed but remain calm, continuing their worship; they will never reveal this to anyone.”       

 

2602 tāmbāl āppuṇḍālum * attaḻumbu tān iḷaha * 

 pāmbāl āppuṇḍu pāḍutṛṛālum ** - sōmbādu ip 

 palluruvai ellām * paḍarvitta vittā! * un 

 tolluruvai yār aṛivār? sollu      18

“Even when tied with a rope (by mother Yaśodā) which left a glorious scar and bound by the serpent Kāliya and harassed, You created many types of living beings without procrastinating. O Cause of all Causes! Who knows Your divine form? Please tell.” 

  

2603 sollil kuṛai illai * sūdaṛiyā neñjamē! * 

 elli pagal ennādu eppōdum ** - tollaik kaṇ 

 māttānaikkellām * ōr aivaraiyē māṛāha * 

 kāttānaik kāṇḍum nī kāṇ      19

“O naïve heart! If we talk about the Lord our speech will be purified (or) our miseries will be eliminated; we can see the Lord who was protecting day and night the Pāṇḍavas who fought against Duryodhana and his big army; yes, you can see.”  

 

2604 kāṇap puhil aṛivu * kaik koṇḍa nalneñjam * 

 nāṇappaḍumanṛē? nām pēsil ** - māṇi 

 uruvāhik koṇḍu * ulagam nīr ētṛṛa sīrān * 

 tiruvāgam tīṇḍitṛṛuc cenṛu      20

“O wise heart! If we understand that the Supreme Lord went as Vāmana, got the planetary systems by begging, and expanded and touched all the worlds with His body, then we would be ashamed of our words (by which we ask the Lord to appear before us instead of awaiting His mercy).”   

 

2605 senṛaṅgu vennaragil * sērāmal kāppadaṛku * 

 inṛiṅgu en neñjāl iḍukkuṇḍa ** - anṛaṅgup 

 pāruruvum pār vaḷaitta * nīruruvum kaṇ pudaiya * 

 kāruruvan tān nimirtta kāl      21

“The lotus feet of the rain cloud-hued Lord which covered the earth and the ocean surrounding the world are now tightly placed in my heart to save me from falling into the hellish planets.”  

 

2606 kālē podat tirindu * kattuvarām inanāḷ * 

 mālār kuḍi puhundār en manattē ** - mēlāl 

 tarukkum iḍam pāṭṭinoḍum * valvinaiyār tām * vītṛ 

 ṛirukkum iḍam kāṇādu iḷaittu      22

“The merciful Lord has entered my heart! All my terrible sins, which were torturing me, have been displaced and are roaming around looking for a place to live; probably they are wailing in sorrow and leg pain now.”  

 

2607 iḷaippāy iḷaiyāppāy * neñjamē! sonnēn * 

 iḷaikka naman tamarhaḷ patṛṛi - iḷaippeyda ** 

 nāytandu mōdāmal * nalhuvān nalkāppān * 

 tāy tandai evvuyirkkum tān      23

“O heart! When the Yamadūtas catch hold of us it is excruciating and further, they unleash their hounds on us which mangle us sorely; if the Lord saves us from this terrible ordeal or not, the truth is that He is the mother and father of all living beings. I have told you this now; if you have faith You will be saved, if not you will suffer.”        

 

2608 tānē tanit tōnṛal * tan aḷappu onṛillādān * 

 tānē piṛarhaṭkum tatṛṛōnṛal ** - tānē 

 iḷaikkil pār kīḻ mēlām * mīṇḍu amaippānānāl * 

aḷakkiṛpār pārin mēl ār?       24

“There is nobody equal or superior to the Lord; He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead; He has pervaded into all objects; all good or bad things happen in this world according to His will; who in this world can estimate His opulences?”   

 

2609 ārānum * ādānum seyya * agal iḍattai

 ārāyndu * adu tiruttal āvadē? ** - sīrār 

 manattalai * vantunbattai mātṛṛinēn * vānōr 

 inat talaivan kaṇṇanāl yān      25

“Let others do whatever they wish; in this vast world is it possible to check others’ activities and correct them? I have rid my heart of the insurmountable miseries with the grace of Kaṇṇan, the Lord of all nitya-muktas.”    

 

2610 yānum en neñjum * isaindoḻindōm * valvinaiyaik 

 kānum malaiyum pugak kaḍivān ** - tānōr 

 iruḷ anna māmēni * em iṛaiyār tanda * 

 aruḷ ennum taṇḍāl aḍittu      26

“My heart and I have agreed to beat my terrible sins with the staff of mercy granted by the Lord who has a beautiful dark body hue and chase them away to the wilderness.”    

 

2611 aḍiyāl paḍi kaḍanda muttō? * adanṛēl 

 muḍiyāl * visumbaḷanda muttō? ** - neḍiyāy! 

 seṛikaḻalhaḷ tāḷ nimirttuc * cenṛu ulagam ellām * 

 aṛigilam āl nī aḷanda anṛu      27

“O Trivikrama! We do not know which of the following pleased You when You stretched and measured the planetary systems – measuring the entire earth with Your lotus foot or the upper planetary systems with Your crown and the lotus foot?”   

 

2612 anṛē nam kaṇ kāṇum * āḻiyān kār uruvam * 

 inṛē nām kāṇādiruppaduvum ** - enṛēnum 

 kaṭkaṇṇāl * kāṇāda avvuruvai * neñjennum 

 uṭkaṇṇēl kāṇum uṇarndu       28

“When our heart, our inner eye opens up (when we fully understand the name, form, and glories) and we visualise the beautiful form of the Lord, which the material eyes cannot see, then the dark-hued, disc-wielding wonderful form of the Lord can be seen by the material eyes too. We are unhappy as we are unable to see Him now because of our non-realisation of the Lord.”    

 

2613 uṇara oruvarkku * eḷiyanē? sevvē * 

 iṇarum tuḻāy alaṅgal endai ** - uṇarat 

 tanakku eḷiyar evvaḷavar * avvaḷavan ānāl * 

 enakkeḷiyan emperumān iṅgu      29

“Does the Lord reveal Himself to those who try by (philosophical approach or undergoing austerities) their efforts? (No); the Lord, adorned with a garland of tulasī which continues to grow (because of His body contact), reveals Himself as much as His devotees love Him. So, I can understand the Lord easily.”     

 

2614 iṅgillai * paṇḍu pōl vītṛṛiruttal * ennuḍaiya 

 seṅgaṇmāl * sīrkkum siṛiduḷḷam ** - aṅgē 

 maḍi aḍakki niṛpadanil * valvinaiyār tām * mīṇḍu

 aḍi eḍuppadanṛō aḻagu?       30

“My sins cannot remain comfortably anymore in my heart because the space is insufficient to accommodate the auspicious qualities of my Lord whose eyes are reddish; the tough sins should get out instead of trying to remain crowded.”    

 

2615 aḻagum aṛivōmāy * valvinaiyait tīrppān * 

 niḻalum aḍitāṛumānōm ** - suḻalak 

 kuḍaṅgaḷ * talai mīdeḍuttuk koṇḍāḍi * anṛu at 

 taḍaṅgkaḍalai mēyār tamakku      31

“We have found out the best way to eliminate our tough sins; we have become the footprint and shadow of the Lord who danced with pots on His head and returned to His abode of the Milk Ocean.”

 

2616 tamakku aḍimai vēṇḍuvār * dāmodaranār

 tamakku * aḍimai sey enṛāl seyyādu ** - emakku enṛum

tām seyyum tīvinaikkē * tāḻvuṛuvar neñjinār * 

 yān seyvadu ivviḍattu iṅgu yādu?     32

“Despite telling my heart to surrender to Dāmodara who favours those who surrender to Him, it ignores my request and continues to engage in sense gratification; what to do in this situation?”

 yādānum nērndaṇuhāvāṛu tān? ** - yādānum 

 tēṛumā seyyā * asurarhaḷai * nēmiyāl 

 pāṛu pāṛākkinān pāl       33

“The Lord with His disc weapon minces to pieces the asuras who always engage in evil acts and never try to become good; why do the people not approach the Lord? Because, despite possessing intelligence and the quality of being happy, most of the people are asuric in nature.     

 

2618 pālāḻi * nī kiḍakkum paṇbai * yām kēṭṭēyum * 

 kālāḻum neñjaḻiyum kaṇ suḻalum ** - nīlāḻic 

 cōdiyāy! ādiyāy! * tolvinai empāl kaḍiyum * 

 nīdiyāy! niṛsārndu ninṛu      34

“O ocean-hued Supreme Personality of Godhead! One who can eliminate even our terrible sins! When I approached You and heard about the elegance of Your yoga-nidrā on the Ocean of Milk, my legs faltered, heart spluttered, and eyes reeled.”     

 

2619 ninṛum irundum * kiḍandum tiritandum * 

 onṛumō ātṛṛān en neñjahalān ** - anṛu aṅgai 

 vanpuḍaiyāl ponpeyarōn * vāy tagarttu mārviḍandān * 

 anbuḍaiyan anṛē avan?       35

“The Lord struck the mouth with His elegant hands and tore off the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu is very loving to His devotees and never gets satisfied with His support to them. He is sometimes standing, sitting, reclining, or walking, but never leaves my heart.”     

 

2620 avanām ivanām uvanām * matṛṛu umbar 

 avanām * avan enṛirādē ** - avanām 

 avanē enat teḷindu * kaṇṇanukkē tīrndāl * 

 avanē evanēlumām        36

“Instead of wondering if the Lord is very difficult to approach or easy or neither easy nor difficult or is He not at all possible to approach, we should know without any doubt that He is very easy to approach which has been confirmed in His appearance as Kaṇṇan; so, if we surrender to Him, we can establish any kind of relationship with Him as we desire (neutral, servant, friend, parent, and lover).   

 

2621 āmāṛu aṛivuḍaiyār * āvadu aridanṛē? * 

 nāmē adu uḍaiyōm nanneñjē! ** - pūmēy 

 madukaramē * taṇtuḻāy mālārai * vāḻttām 

 adukaramē anbāl amai       37

“O good heart! (You know that) It is very rare to be born with six senses (as a human being); we are fortunate to be one; (so) be firmly situated in devotion and always engage in glorifying the merciful Lord adorned with a garland of tulasī leaves swarmed by bumblebees.”    

 

2622 amaikkum poḻuduṇḍē? * ārāyil neñjē! * 

 imaikkum poḻudum iḍaicci - kumaittiṛaṅgaḷ ** 

 ēsiyē āyinum * īntuḻāy māyanaiyē * 

 pēsiyē pōkkāy piḻai       38

“O heart! Can we waste even a second? Try to get your sins nullified by always talking about—even if to make fun of—the naughty activities of Kaṇṇan—adorned with a fragrant garland of tulasī leaves—and the punishments given by mother Yaśodā.”       

 

2623 piḻaikka muyanṛōmō? * neñjamē! pēsāy * 

 taḻaikkum tuḻāy mārvan tannai ** - aḻaittu orukāl 

 pōy upakāram * poliyak koḷḷādu * avan pugaḻē 

 vāy upakāram koṇḍa vāyppu      39 

“O heart! Are we committing a mistake by rather than praying to the Lord adorned with a fresh garland of tulasī leaves and when mercifully taken by Him to Vaikuṇṭha and serving Him lovingly, (staying here and) just always glorifying His auspicious qualities? Please tell me.”  

2624 vāyppō idu oppa * matṛṛillai vā neñjē! * 

 pōyp pōoy vennaragil pūviyēl ** - tīppāla 

 pēyt tāy * uyirkalāyp pāl uṇḍu * avaḷ uyirai 

 māyttānai vāḻttē vali       40

“Come heart! We will never get an opportunity like this again; don’t sweet talk me and push me into terrible hell; it’s a great honor for us to glorify the Lord who sucked both the milk and the life air of the evil-intentioned demon Pūtanā who came as a mother.”     

 

2625 valiyamena ninaindu * vandedirnda mallar * 

 valiya muḍi iḍiya vāṅgi ** - valiya nin 

 ponnāḻik kaiyāl * puḍaittiḍudi kīḷādē * 

 palnāḷum niṛkum ippār       41

“With Your strong and disc-wielding hand, You pulverised the wrestlers who thought they were powerful and smashed their strong heads into pieces; (because of this and other pastimes wherein You eliminated many other demons) this world will remain for a long time without getting destroyed.”   

 

2626 pār uṇḍān pār umiḻndān * pār iḍandān pār aḷandān * 

pāriḍam munpaḍaittān enbarāl ** - pāriḍam 

 āvānum * tānānāl āriḍamē? * matṛṛoruvarkku 

 āvān pugāvāl avai        42

“He (Lord Nārāyaṇa) swallowed the worlds and later brought them out; (as Varāha) He lifted the earth (on His horn); (as Trivikrama) He measured the worlds; the Vedic scholars say that He created the worlds and has pervaded everything; (then) who else can be our shelter? This material creation will not be subservient to anyone else.”         

 

2627 avayamena ninaindu * vanda surar pālē * 

 navaiyai naḷirvippān tannai ** - kavaiyil 

 manattuyara vaittirundu * vāḻttādārkku uṇḍō? *

 manattuyarai māykkum vahai      43

“When even the demigods take shelter of the Lord to get their problems solved, what is the way to get their distresses relieved if the people do not think of the Lord, focus their minds on Him, and glorify Him?”   

 

2628 vahai sērnda nalneñjum * nāvuḍaiya vāyum * 

 miha vāyndu vīḻā enilum ** - miha vāyndu 

 mālait tām * vāḻttādu iruppar idu anṛē? * 

 mēlait tām seyyum vinai       44

“The worldly people, though endowed with a heart to follow a good path do not use it to think of the Lord and a mouth with a tongue, do not analyse, understand, and glorify the Lord; aren’t they committing a great sin by wasting the remaining lifetime too?”   

 

2629 vinaiyār tara muyalum * vemmaiyai añji * 

 tinaiyām siṛidaḷavum sella - ninaiyādu **

“Fearing the miseries that can be caused by our sinful actions and not wasting even a fraction of a time, I sing the glories of the Lord worshipped by the nitya-muktas.”

 

2630 nān kūṛum * kūtṛṛāvadu ittanaiyē * nāḷnāḷum 

 tēṅgōda * nīruruvan seṅgkaṇmāl ** - nīṅgāda 

 mākadiyām vennaragil * sērāmal kāppadaṛku * 

 nīkatiyā neñjē! ninai       46

“O heart! The truth that I want to tell you daily is that the Supreme Lord, who is ocean-hued and lotus-eyed, is our shelter who should never be left, and He saves us from the miserable cycle of birth and death; always remember this.”     

 

2631 ninaittu iṛaiñji māniḍavar * onṛirappar enṛē * 

 ninaittiḍavum vēṇḍā nī nērē ** - ninaittu iṛaiñja

 evvaḷavar * evviḍattōr mālē! * adu tānum 

 evvaḷavum uṇḍō? emakku       47

“O Supreme Lord! Please do not expect these worldly people to think of You, worship You, and beg for some benefit (because they run behind the demigods for their needs); Do they have any realisation to come to You and worship You? (Not at all); are they in a place where they can get the right realisation? (No, they are in a place of passion and ignorance covering goodness). (But) Will we ever be afflicted by that kind of foolish thinking? (Never, since we are firmly established as Your surrendered devotee).”  

 

2632 emakku yām viṇṇāṭṭukku * uccamadām vīṭṭai * 

 amaittu irundōm aqdanṛē yāmāṛu? ** - amaippolinda 

 mentōḷi kāraṇamā * veṅgōṭṭu ēṛu ēḻuḍanē * 

 konṛānaiyē manattuk koṇḍu      48

“We always contemplate on the Lord who for the sake of the bamboo-like stout and slender-shouldered Nappinnai, tamed in a second, the seven sharp-horned demoniac bulls and consider Vaikuṇṭha, the supreme abode, as our eternal residence; is that not the right consciousness (of a devotee)?”  

 

2633 koṇḍal tān māl varai tān * mākaḍal tān kūr iruḷ tān * 

 vaṇḍaṛāp pūvai tān matṛṛut tān ** - kaṇḍa nāḷ 

 kār uruvam * kāṇ tōṛum neñju ōḍum * kaṇṇanār 

 pēruru enṛemmaip pirindu       49

“When and wherever I see the clouds, huge mountains, black ocean, dark night, kāyam flower, and any other black form, thinking that they are the beautiful dark form of Kaṇṇan, my heart runs away to them.”   

 

2634 pirindonṛu nōkkādu * tammuḍaiya pinnē * 

 tirinduḻalum sindanaiyār tammai ** - purindu orukāl 

 āvā! ena iraṅgār * andō! validē kol? * 

 māvāy piḷandār manam       50

“Alas! Is the heart of the Lord who split the mouth of the Keśī demon very hard? He is never merciful to my heart which never leaves me or looks at anything else and roams around with me in the service of the Lord.”    

 

2635 manam āḷum ōr aivar * vankuṛumbar tammai * 

 sinam āḷvittu ōr iḍattē sērttu ** - punamēya 

taṇtuḻāyān aḍiyait * tān kāṇum aqdanṛē * 

 vaṇtuḻām sīrārkku māṇbu      51

“Is it not—that bringing the five senses, the tough troublemakers who bring even the heart under their control, under one’s control and engage them in the devotional service of the lotus feet of the Lord who is adorned with a cool garland of tulasī leaves—the proper deed of the noble Vaiṣṇavas?”    

 

2636 māṇpāvittu anjnānṛu * maṇ irandān * māyavaḷ nañju 

 ūṇ pāvittu * uṇḍānadu ōr uruvam ** - kāṇbān naṅ

 kaṇṇavā * matṛṛonṛu kāṇuṛā * sīr paravādu 

 uṇṇa vāy tān uṛumō onṛu?      52 

“Our eyes wish to see and worship the divine form of the Lord who went as Vāmana and begged land and who sucked milk and the life-air from the poison-laced nipple of the demon Pūtanā and do not wish to see anything else! Will the mouth desire to gobble up food instead of singing His glories?”

   

2637 onṛuṇḍu seṅgkaṇmāl! yān uraippadu * un aḍiyārkku 

 en seyvan enṛē irutti nī ** - nin pugaḻil 

 vaikum * tam sindaiyilum matṛṛinidō? * nī avarkku 

 vaikuṇṭham enṛaruḷum vān       53

“O reddish-eyed Supreme Lord! I wish to say something; You keep look for an opportunity to benefit Your devotees, but Your devotees consider always glorifying Your auspicious qualities is sweeter than Vaikuṇṭha, offered by You.”  

 

2638 vānō? maṛikaḍalō? * mārutamō? tīyagamō? * 

 kānō? oruṅgitṛṛum kaṇḍilam āl ** - ānīnṛa 

 kanṛuyarat tām eṛindu * kāy udirttār tāḷ paindōm * 

 vantuyarai yāvā! maruṅgu      54 

“We surrendered to the lotus feet of Kaṇṇan who threw up Vatsāsura on the woodapple tree and fell the fruits; (since then) our terrible sins have disappeared; did they disappear into the sky, ocean, air, fire, or forest? Alas (not known)! 

 

2639 maruṅgōdam mōdum * maṇi nāgaṇaiyār * 

 maruṅgē vara ariyarēlum ** - oruṅgē 

 emakku avaraik kāṇalām * eppōdum uḷḷāl * 

 manak kavalai tīrppār varavu      55

“Though the Lord who relieves our worries and reclines on jewelled-hooded Ananta Śeṣa on the Ocean of Milk is difficult to approach, we can always see Him in our heart.”    

 

2640 varavāṛonṛillaiyāl * vāḻvinidāl * ellē! 

 oruvāṛu * oruvan pugāvāṛu ** - urumāṛum 

 āyavar tām sēyavar tām * anṛu ulagam tāyavar tām * 

 māyavar tām kāṭṭum vaḻi      56

“Lord Kṛṣṇa keeps changing His auspicious forms (to guide and) to prevent the people from following atheistic paths; He is inaccessible to demoniac people; He whose activities are incredible once extended His form and measured all the planetary systems; it is not possible to know how He guides us but (if we follow) the result will be beneficial; it’s wonderful!”      

 

2641 vaḻit taṅgu valvinaiyai * mātṛṛānō? neñjē! * 

 taḻīikkoṇḍu pōr avuṇan tannai ** - suḻittu eṅgum

 tāḻviḍaṅgkaḷ patṛṛip * pulāl veḷḷam tān ugaḷa * 

 vāḻvaḍaṅga mārviḍanda māl?      57

“O heart! Lord Nṛsiṁha, who firmly held Hiraṇyakaśipu (on His lap), killed Him by splitting open his chest with blood sprouting and gushing out all around, will He not eliminate the terrible sins that hold us back in this material world?”  

 

2642 mālē! paḍic cōdi mātṛṛēl * ini unadu

 pālē pōl * sīril paḻuttoḻindēn ** - mēlāl 

 piṛappinmai petṛṛu * aḍik kīḻk kutṛṛēval anṛu * 

 maṛappinmai yān vēṇḍum māḍu      58 

“O Supreme Lord! I have drowned in Your auspicious qualities; now, I do not desire the boon of attaining Vaikuṇṭha and serving at Your lotus feet; I desire to see Your divine and effulgent form always and the wealth that I never forget You.”   

2643 māḍē varap peṛuvarām enṛē * valvinaiyār 

 kāḍānum * ādānum kaikkoḷḷār ** - ūḍē pōyp 

 pērōdam sindu * tiraikkaṇ vaḷarum * pērāḷan 

 pērōdac cindikkap pērndu      59

“Why are the terrible sins not leaving us to go and hide in the forest or elsewhere the moment we think of chanting the holy names of the Lord who reclines in the Milk Ocean? Do they believe that they can continue to stay?”  

 

2644 pērndonṛu nōkkādu * pinniṛpāy nillāppāy * 

 īntuḻāy māyanaiyē en neñjē! ** - pērndeṅgum 

 tollaimā vennaragil * sērāmal kāppadaṛku * 

illai kāṇ matṛṛōr iṛai       60 

“O my heart! Better do not think of anything other than the mystical Lord adorned with a fresh garland of tulasīleaves or get lost if you don’t want to; (know that) there is no other god to protect us from falling into the terrible hell.”

  

2645 iṛai muṛaiyān sēvaḍi mēl * maṇ aḷanda annāḷ * 

 maṛai muṛaiyāl vānāḍar kūḍi ** - muṛai muṛaiyin

 tādilagu * pūtteḷittāl ovvādē? * tāḻ visumbin 

 mīdilagit tān kiḍakkum mīn      61

“Don’t the myriads of the bright stars in the sky look like fresh flowers showered while chanting Vedic hymns, by the hordes of demigods on the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead when He extended His legs and measured the worlds?”      

 

2646 mīnennuṅ kambil * veṛiyennum veḷḷi vēy * 

 vānennum kēḍilā vānkuḍaikku ** - tānōr 

 maṇik kāmbu pōl nimirndu * maṇ aḷandān * naṅgaḷ

 piṇikkām perumarundu pin       62

“The stars were the pearls-studded spokes, the moon was the silver base plate, and the sky was the clothing of the eternal umbrella and the Lord extended (to measure the worlds) as a matchless blue-sapphire stone-hued stem (of the umbrella); that Lord is the best medicine for our disease of material life.”      

 

2647 pin turakkum kātṛṛiḻanda * sūṛkoṇḍal pērndum pōy * 

 vantiraikkaṇ vandaṇainda vāymaittē ** - anṛu 

 tirucceyya nēmiyān * tī arakki mūkkum * 

 parucceviyum īrnda paran      63

“The rain cloud that is blown by the wind and rests finally over the sea reminds me of Lord Rāma—who wields the red-hot disc and who cut off the nose and the fat ears of the demon Śūrpaṇakhā—returning to (after completing His pastimes in the material world) and reclining on the Ocean of Milk.”    

 

2648 paranām avanādal * pāvipparāhil * 

 uranāl oru mūnṛu pōdum ** - maram ēḻu anṛu 

 eydānaip * puḷḷin vāy kīṇḍānaiyē * amarar 

 kai tān toḻāvē kalandu?      64

“Won’t the demigods worship with folded hands those who have realised that both Rāma who pierced the seven sal trees and Lord Kṛṣṇa who split the mouth of Bakāsura are the Supreme Personalities of Godhead?”   

 

2649 kalandu naliyum * kaḍuntuyarai neñjē! * 

 malaṅga aḍittu maḍippān ** - vilaṅgal pōl 

 tolmālaik keśavanai * nāraṇanai mādhavanai * 

 solmālai eppoḻudum sūṭṭu      65

“O heart! If you want the terrible sins that torture you to be thrashed and chased away, then always offer garlands of songs glorifying the mountain-like and our eternal benefactor Keśava! Nārāyaṇa! Mādhava!”   

 

2650 sūṭṭāya nēmiyān * tollarakkan innuyirai * 

 māṭṭē tuyar iḻaitta māyavanai ** - īṭṭa 

 veṛi koṇḍa * taṇtuḻāy vēdiyanai * neñjē! 

 aṛi kaṇḍāy sonnēn adu       66

“O my heart, listen to me! Always remember the divine Lord whose hand is decorated with the disc weapon; the incredible Lord who killed Rāvaṇa who was harassing everyone for a long time; and, the auspicious Lord who is adorned with a fragrant cool garland of tulasī leaves.”    

 

2651 aduvō nanṛenṛu * aṅgu amarulagō vēṇḍil * 

 aduvōr poruḷ illai anṛē ** - aduvoḻindu 

 maṇ inṛu āḷvēn enilum * kūḍum maḍaneñjē! * 

 kaṇṇan tāḷ vāḻttuvadē kal      67

“O foolish heart! If you decide that attaining Vaikuṇṭha is the best for you, fulfilling that wish is not at all difficult for the Lord; or if you reject Vaikuṇṭha and want to enjoy opulences in this material world, that is also not difficult for Kaṇṇan; just learn to glorify His lotus feet.”  

 

2652 kallum kanaikaḍalum * vaikuṇṭha vānāḍum * 

 pullenṛu oḻindana kol? ēpāvam! ** - vella 

 neḍiyān niṛam kariyān * uḷpuhundu nīṅgān * 

 aḍiyēnadu uḷḷattaham       68

“The dark-hued Kaṇṇan, who is undefeatable, has entered my heart and will not leave at all; (so) the Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills, the stormy Milk Ocean, and Vaikuṇṭha have lost their charm for me, o what a pity!”    

 

2653 agam sivanda kaṇṇinarāy * valvinaiyar āvār * 

 mugam sidaivarām anṛē mukki ** - mihum tirumāl

sīrkkaḍalai uḷ podinda * sindanaiyēn tannai * 

 ārkku aḍalām sevvē aḍarttu?      69

“The terrible sins (which have been chased away from afflicting me) have angry red eyes and sullen faces; who can approach and torture me when the ocean of the auspicious qualities of the Supreme Lord has flooded my consciousness?”   

2654 aḍarpon muḍiyānai * āyiram pērānai * 

 suḍarkoḷ suḍar āḻiyānai ** - iḍar kaḍiyum 

 mātā pituvāha * vaittēn enaduḷḷē * 

 yādāgil yādē ini?        70

“I have seated the Lord—with thick golden hair who is called by a thousand names; who wields the disc whose effulgence has covered that of the sun and the moon; and, who is the mother and father capable of removing my miseries—in my heart; now, let anything happen to me (I don’t care).” 

 

2655 ini ninṛu nin perumai * yān uraippadu ennē? * 

 tani ninṛa sārvilā mūrti! ** - pani nīr 

 agattulavu * señjaḍaiyān āgattān * nāṅgu 

 mugattān nin undi mudal      71 

“O Lord! You are the only cause of all causes; You are independent; Śiva, in whose matted reddish hair the cool Ganges rests, is a part of Your divine body; Brahmā has his abode on the lotus that sprouted from Your navel; then, what can I say to glorify You?”   

2656 mudalām tiruvuruvam * mūnṛu enbar * onṛē 

 mudalāhum * mūnṛukkum enbar - mudalvā! ** 

 niharilahu kāruruvā! * nin agattadanṛē? * 

 pugarilahu tāmaraiyin pū       72 

“O Supreme cause of all causes! Some say that Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva are the first and chief forms; some others say that there is a chief above the three; O Lord with a wonderful rain cloud-hue! Hasn’t the effulgent lotus flower sprouted from Your navel? (Śiva appeared from Brahmā who appeared from Your naval lotus; this proves that You are the only cause of all).”       

2657 pūvaiyum kāyāvum * nīlamum pūkkinṛa * 

 kāvi malar enṛum kāṇtōṛum ** - pāviyēn 

 mellāvi * mey mihavē pūrikkum * avvavai 

 ellām pirān uruvē enṛu       73 

“Whenever I see the flowers of kāyam, ironwood, blue lotus, or red lotus, I see the dark blue-hued divine form of the Lord, and my soul and body get vitalised.”   

2658 enṛum oru nāḷ * oḻiyāmai yān irandāl * 

 onṛum iraṅgār urukkāṭṭār ** - kunṛu 

 kuḍaiyāha * ākātta kōvalanār * neñjē! 

 puḍai tān peridē puvi       74

“(Even) Though I worship Gopāla Kṛṣṇa, who held Govardhana Hills as an umbrella to protect the cows every day, not missing even a single day, He is not merciful to show His divine form; is this earth a highland where the flood of His mercy cannot reach?”  

 

2659 puviyum iruvisumbum ninnagatta * nī en 

 seviyin vaḻi puhundu en uḷḷāy ** - avivinṛi 

 yān periyan nī periyai * enbadanai yār aṛivār? * 

 ūn paruhu nēmiyāy! uḷḷu       75

“O Lord who wields the disc weapon which minces the bodies of the asuras! This material world and the vast celestial world are in You and, You have entered my heart through my ear and remain there ever; (now) who knows I am big (because I keep in me You who keeps both the worlds in Him) or You are big? You please think about this.”   

 

2660 uḷḷilum uḷḷam taḍikkum * vinaip paḍalam * 

 viḷḷa viḻittu unnai meyyutṛṛāl ** - uḷḷa 

 ulagaḷavum * yānum uḷan āvan en kolō? * 

 ulagaḷanda mūrtti! urai       76

“O Lord Trivikrama! When I think of You, my heart swells (in happiness); if my hoards of sins are eliminated by You, and with Your causeless mercy if You enter me, would I too pervade all the creation (like You)? Is it possible? Please tell me.”

 

2661 uraikkilōr sutṛṛattār * utṛṛār enṛu ārē? * 

 iraikkum kaḍal kiḍanda endāy! ** - uraippellām

 ninnanṛi * matṛṛilēn kaṇḍāy! * enadu uyirkku ōr 

 sol nanṛiyāhum tuṇai       77

“O Lord reclining in the Ocean of Milk! To tell the truth, are there any relatives and friends (other than You) for me? Please know that You are everything for me; Your divine words (Bhagavad-gītā) are my true savior.” 

 

2662 tuṇai nāḷ perum kiḷaiyum * tolkulamum * sutṛṛat 

 tiṇai nāḷum * inbu uḍaittāmēlum * - kaṇai nāṇil

 ōvāt toḻil sārṅgan * tolsīrai nalneñjē! * 

ōvāda ūṇāha uṇ        78

“O good heart! Even if friends, long life, many sons and grandsons, a good family lineage, and close relatives were to give you happiness, (instead of sorrow, without getting attached to them) you should always meditate on the divine qualities of Rāma who wields the bow that keeps raining arrows non-stop on the enemies.”     

 

2663 uḷnāṭṭut tēsanṛē! * ūḻvinaiyai añjumē? * 

 viṇṇāṭṭai onṛāha meccumē? ** - maṇṇāṭṭil 

 ārāhi * evviḻi vitṛṛānālum * āḻi aṅgaip 

 pērāyaṛku āḷām piṛappu       79

“One may be born in any caste and do any kind of lowly work, but if that person surrenders to Lord Kṛṣṇa who wields the disc in His elegant hand, it is as glorious as being in Vaikuṇṭha, there is no need to fear about one’s sins of many births, and the heaven will not be desirable (to that person).”  

 

2664 piṛappu iṛappu mūppup * piṇi tuṛandu * pinnum 

 iṛakkavum inbu uḍaittāmēlum ** - maṛappellām 

 ēdamē * enṛallāl eṇṇuvanē? * maṇ aḷandān 

 pādamē ēttāp pagal       80

“If one is rid of birth, death, old age, and disease and, even attains kaivalya-mokṣa, but could not do the glorification of the lotus feet of Lord Trivikrama, then I will consider that happiness as a misery only.”   

 

2665 pagal irā enbaduvum * pāviyādu * emmai 

 igal seydu * irupoḻudum āḷvar ** - tagavāt 

 toḻumbar ivar sīrkkum * tuṇai ilar enṛōrār * 

 seḻumparavai mēyār terindu      81 

“The Lord who reclines in the Milk Ocean does not consider at all that ‘This lowly man doesn’t deserve my mercy and doesn’t have the association of pure devotees;’ but He offers me the happiness of engaging in His devotional service, day and night, without any interruption.”     

2666 terindu uṇarvonṛu inmaiyāl * tīvinaiyēn * vāḷā 

 irundu oḻindēn * kīḻnāḷgaḷ ellām ** - karanturuvin 

 ammānai * annjānṛu pin toḍarnda * āḻi aṅgai 

 ammānai ēttādu ayarttu      82 

“This most sinful I, due to lack of wisdom, have wasted my earlier days foolishly without worshipping Lord Rāma, adorned with a lovely ring, who went after the magical deer, Mārīca, and killed him.”

 

2667 ayarppāy ayarāppāy * neñjamē! sonnēn * 

 uyappōm neṛi iduvē kaṇḍāy ** - seyaṛpāla 

 vallavē seykiṛudi * neñjamē! añjinēn * 

 mallar nāḷ vavvinanai vāḻttu      83

“O heart! You may forget (the Lord and suffer) or always remember (Him and live happily), but I am afraid that you may engage in bad activities; (so) my advice to you is always keep glorifying the Lord Kaṇṇan who ended the lives of the wrestlers, that is the only way for salvation.”   

 

2668 vāḻtti avan aḍiyaip pūppunaindu * nin talaiyait 

 tāḻttu * irukai kūppu enṛāl kūppāda - pāḻtta vidi! ** 

 eṅgutṛṛāy enṛavanai * ēttādu en neñjamē! * 

 taṅgattān āmēlum taṅgu      84

“O my heart! When I ask you to glorify the lotus feet of the Lord, offer flowers, bow down your head, and fold your hands in respect you don’t do it because of (my) bad karma; if you (think you) can survive without calling out, ‘Where are You, my Lord?’ and worship Him, try it.”   

 

2669 taṅgā muyatṛṛiya vāyt * tāḻ visumbin mīdu pāyndu * 

 eṅgē pukku ettavam seydiṭṭana kol? ** - poṅgōdat

 taṇ ambāl * vēlai vāyk kaṇ vaḷarum * ennuḍaiya

 kaṇṇan pāl nalniṛam koḷkār      85

“Where and what severe austerities the rain clouds, which tirelessly roam around in the vast sky, have performed to acquire the same wonderful dark blue body hue of Kaṇṇan reclining on the wavy and cool Ocean of Milk?”  

 

2670 * kār kalanda mēniyān * kai kalanda āḻiyān * 

 pār kalanda valvayitṛṛān pāmbaṇaiyān ** - sīr kalanda 

 sol ninaindu pōkkārēl * sūḻ vinaiyin āḻtuyarai * 

 en ninaindu pōkkuvar ippōdu?      86 

“If the people do not get rid of their miseries due to terrible sins of past lives by thinking about and singing the glories of the Lord—who is rain cloud-hued, wields the disc weapon in His hand, has a vast stomach which accommodates all the worlds (during pralaya), reclines on the bed of Ananta Śeṣa, and is full of auspicious qualities—what will they think about to pass the time?”  

2671 * ippōdum innum * inic ciṛidu ninṛālum * 

 eppōdum īdē sol en neñjē! ** - eppōdum 

 kai kaḻalā nēmiyān * nam mēl vinai kaḍivān * 

 moykaḻalē ētta muyal       87 

“O my heart! Always glorify the lovely lotus feet of the Lord who wields the disc always to rid us of our sins; this is my best advice for now, future, or any time.”
