 sīrārum māḍat tirukkōvalūr adanuḷ * 

 kārār karumuhilaik kāṇap pukku * - ōrāt 

 tirukkaṇḍēn enṛu uraitta sīrān kaḻalē * 

 uraik kaṇḍāy neñjē! ugandu

“O my heart! Eulogise the glorious Pēyāḻvār who went to Tirukkōvalūr, which has many beautiful palaces, to worship the rain-cloud-hued Lord and enjoyed a divine vision of the Lord (in a small cave in the company of Poigai Āḻvār and Bhūtattāḻvār) and rendered one hundred divine songs starting with the word ‘Tirukkaṇḍēn (worshipped the opulent Lord).’    

 

2282 * tirukkaṇḍēn * pon mēni kaṇḍēn * tihaḻum 

 arukkanaṇi niṛamum kaṇḍēn ** - serukkiḷarum 

 ponnāḻi kaṇḍēn * puri saṅgam kaikkaṇḍēn *

“Today when I was blessed with the divine vision of the Lord, along with the ocean-hued Lord I worshipped mother Lakṣmī; worshipped His transcendental form; I worshipped His magnificently effulgent form like the bright sun; I worshipped in one of His hands also the disc which shows its might on the battlefield; and, I also worshipped the dextral conch on the other hand.”    

 

2283 inṛē kaḻal kaṇḍēn * ēḻ piṛappum yān aṛuttēn * 

 pon tōy varai mārbil pūntuḻāy ** - anṛu 

 tirukkaṇḍu koṇḍa * tirumālē! * unnai 

 marukkaṇḍu koṇḍen manam                   2 

“O consort of mother Lakṣmī! The (fragrance of the) tulasī garland decorating Your mountain-like chest adorned with gold jewelry was enjoyed by mother Lakṣmī who appeared when the Milk Ocean was churned! Since the mind of this servant is fixed on You, today I was fortunate to worship Your lotus feet and my cycle of birth and death has been cut off.”     

 

2284 manattuḷḷān * mākaḍal nīr uḷḷān * malarāḷ 

 tanattuḷḷān * taṇtuḻāy mārban ** - sinattuc 

 cerunarugac cetṛṛu uhanda * tēṅgōda vaṇṇan * 

 varu naragam tīrkkum marundu              3 

“The Supreme Lord who reclines in the vast Ocean of milk; who lies on the chest of mother Lakṣmī; whose chest is decorated with a cool garland of tulasī leaves; who, with great anger, annihilates His enemies; who is ocean-hued; and who is the medicine to cure the hellish cycle of birth and death has occupied my heart.”    

 

2285 marundum poruḷum * amudamum tānē * 

 tirundiya seṅgaṇmāl āṅgē ** - porundiyum

 ninṛu ulagam uṇḍu umiḻndum * nīr ētṛṛum mūvaḍiyāl * 

 anṛu ulagam tāyōn aḍi                    4 

“The Lotus feet of the Supreme Lord who has red lotus-like eyes; who is completely fixed on the job of protection of the cosmic creation; who swallowed the planetary systems (to protect from pralaya); who begged from Bali and expanded to measure the planetary systems in three steps are the medicine for curing the disease of material misery, the wealth to obtain one’s needs, and the most relishable ambrosia.”  

 

2286 aḍi vaṇṇam tāmarai * anṛu ulagam tāyōn * 

 paḍi vaṇṇam pārkkaḍal nīr vaṇṇam ** - muḍi vaṇṇam 

 ōrāḻi veyyōn * oḷiyum aqtanṛē * 

 ārāḻi koṇḍāṛku aḻagu                 5 

“The colour of the lotus feet of the Lord who extended and measured the planetary systems is reddish like the lotus; the body hue is like the dark ocean surrounding the world; the brightness of His helmet is like the brilliance of the sun who rides on a chariot with a single wheel; His effulgence is like the sunshine; thus is the beauty of the Lord who wields the disc.”   

 

2287 aḻaganṛē āḻiyāṛku * āḻi nīr vaṇṇam * 

 aḻaganṛē aṇḍaṅgkaḍattal ** - aḻaganṛē 

 aṅgai nīr ētṛṛāṛku * alar mēlōn kāl kaḻuva * 

 gaṅgai nīr kānṛa kaḻal              6 

“The ocean hue of the body hue of the disc-wielding Lord is very lovely; His measuring the upper planetary systems is beautiful; and the lotus foot which brought out the Ganges water when Brahmā washed the lotus foot of the Lord who accepted in His palm the water poured by Bali is very charming.”    

 

2288 kaḻal toḻudum vā neñjē! * kārkkaḍal nīr vēlai * 

 poḻil aḷanda puḷḷūrdic celvan ** - eḻil aḷantaṅgu 

 eṇṇaṛku ariyānai * epporuṭkum sēyānai * 

 naṇṇaṛku ariyānai nām                       7

“O heart! Let us worship the lotus feet of the Lord who measured the earth which is surrounded by dark ocean water; who rides on Garuḍa; who is the most opulent; whose beauty is beyond description; who is far away from all objects; and, who can not be attained with one’s effort.”   

 

2289 nāmam pala solli * nārāyaṇā enṛu * 

 nāmaṅgkaiyāl toḻudum nanneñjē! - vā ** maruvi 

 maṇṇulagam uṇḍu umiḻnda * vaṇḍaṛaiyum taṇtuḻāy * 

 kaṇṇanaiyē kāṇga naṅgkaṇ                     8 

“O good heart! Let us chant holy names like ‘Nārāyaṇā’ and worship Him bringing our hands together; let our eyes look at only Kaṇṇan who swallowed the earth and brought out (later); and who is adorned with a garland of cool tulasī leaves swarmed by humming bees.”   

 

2290 kaṇṇum kamalam * kamalamē kaittalamum * 

 maṇṇaḷanda pādamum matṛṛavaiyē ** - eṇṇil 

 karumā muhil vaṇṇan * kārkkaḍal nīr vaṇṇan * 

 tirumāmaṇivaṇṇan tēsu                 9 

“When we meditate on the beauty of the Lord who is rain cloud-hued, or dark ocean-hued or blue sapphire gemstone-hued, His eyes are lotus-like, His hands are lotus-like too, and His feet which measured the earth are lotus-like too.”   

 

2291 tēsum tiṛalum * tiruvum uruvamum * 

 māsil kuḍippiṛappum matṛṛavaiyum - pēsil ** 

 valam purinda vānsaṅgam * koṇḍān pērōda * 

 nalam purindu senṛaḍaiyum nangu           10 

“If one starts to chant the holy names of the Lord who wields the dextral conch, body luster, strength, wealth, beauty, birth in a family devoted to the Lord, and many other benefits will accrue of their own accord.”  

 

2292 nangōdum * nāl vēdattuḷḷān * naṛaviriyum 

 poṅgōdaruvip punal vaṇṇan ** - saṅgōdap 

 pāṛkaḍalān * pāmbaṇaiyin mēlān * payinṛu uraippār 

 nūṛkaḍalān nuṇṇaṛivinān                           11 

“The Lord who is the subject of the four Vedas which are to be recited with devotion, who has a transcendental body sweeter than honey, (cool) like the water of a waterfall and is ocean-hued, who reclines on Ananta Śeṣa in the Ocean of Milk, and who is glorified in the ocean-like scriptures which are learnt and chanted by the devotees can not be understood by one’s effort (but only with the guidance of a guru).”    

 

2293 aṛivennum tāḷ koḷuvi * aimpulanum tammil * 

 seṛivennum tiṇ kadavam semmi ** - maṛai enṛum 

 nangōdi * nanguṇarvār kāṇbarē * nāḷ tōṛum 

 paiṅgōda vaṇṇan paḍi                       12 

“Those devotees who chant the Vedas properly (under the guidance of a guru), close the door for the five senses (keep them under control), bolt the door with knowledge, and meditate on the Lord will always see the Lord (in their hearts).”

I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who is Śyāmasundara, Kṛṣṇa Himself with inconceivable innumerable attributes, whom the pure devotees see in their heart of hearts with the eye of devotion tinged with the salve of love. (Śrī brahma-saṁhitā 5.38)

 

2294 paḍivaṭṭat tāmarai * paṇḍulagam nīr ētṛṛu * 

 aḍivaṭṭattāl aḷappa nīṇḍa - muḍivaṭṭam ** 

 āhāyam ūḍaṛuttu * aṇḍam pōy nīṇḍadē * 

 mākāyamāy ninṛa māṛku                       13 

“Once, when the Lord begged land from Bali, His body extended to measure the round earth resembling the blossomed lotus; that expanded body crossed the upper planetary systems and went beyond the universe!   

 

2295 māṛpāl manam suḻippa * maṅgaiyar tōḷ kai viṭṭu * 

 nūṛpāl manam vaikka noyvidām ** - nāṛpāla 

 vedattān veṅkaṭattān * viṇṇōr muḍi tōyum * 

 pādattān pādam paṇindu                  14 

“If one takes shelter of His lotus feet and fixes the heart on the Supreme Lord who is the subject of the Vedas, who stands in Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills, and whose lotus feet are touched by the crowns of the nitya-muktas, it will be easy to give up the desire to embrace the shoulders of the women and instead focus on reading the scriptures.”  

 

2296 paṇindu uyarnda pauvap * paḍutiraihaḷ mōda * 

 paṇinda paṇamaṇihaḷālē - aṇindu ** aṅgu 

 anantan aṇaik * kiḍakkum ammān * aḍiyēn 

 manam tan aṇaik kiḍakkum vandu                15 

“The Lord who reclines on the bed of Ananta Śeṣa whose hoods, decorated by gemstones, are spread like an umbrella to prevent the wavy ocean’s water spray falling on His body came and reclined on the bed of the heart of this servant.”    

 

2297 * vandudaitta veṇtiraihaḷ * sempavaḷa veṇmuttam * 

 andi viḷakkum aṇi viḷakkām ** - endai 

 oruvallit tāmaraiyāḷ * onṛiya sīr mārvan * 

 tiruvallikkēṇiyān senṛu                     16 

 “The Lord on whose elegant chest resides mother Lakṣmī, born on a lotus flower with lovely petals, and who stands in Tiruvallikkēṇi, where the red corals and white pearls, pushed on to the shore by the ocean waves, shine like lamps lit in the evening is my Lord.”  

 

2298 senṛa nāḷ sellāda * seṅgkaṇ māl eṅgaḷ māl * 

 enṛa nāḷ ennāḷum nāḷāhum ** - enṛum 

 iṛavāda endai * iṇai aḍikkē āḷāy * 

 maṛavādu vāḻttuha en vāy                 17

“Let me surrender to the lotus feet of the eternal Lord and my tongue praise Him; then all the days gone by, days yet to come, and today when I say, ‘The red lotus-eyed Lord is my Supreme Lord,’ are all auspicious days.”    

 

2299 vāy moḻindu vāmananāy * māvali pāl * mūvaḍi maṇ 

 nī aḷandu koṇḍa neḍumālē! ** - tāviya nin 

 eñjā iṇai aḍikkē * ēḻ piṛappum āḷāhi * 

 añjādirukka aruḷ                              18 

“O Supreme Lord who went to Bali as Vāmana, spoke sweetly, begged for three feet of land, and measured (all the planetary systems as Trivikrama)! Please grant me that in all my births I remain fearless and surrendered to Your lotus feet which have extended all over the universe without leaving anything.”

 

2300 aruḷādu oḻiyumē? * ālilai mēl * anṛu 

teruḷāda * piḷḷaiyāyc cērndān ** - iruḷāda 

 sindaiyarāyc cēvaḍikkē * semmalar tūyk kai toḻudu * 

 mundaiyarāy niṛpārkku mun                 19 

“Will not the Lord who once reclined as a small baby on a banyan leaf be merciful to His devotees whose minds are fixed on Him, who worship Him offering fresh flowers to His lotus feet, and compete with each other for serving Him?” 

 

2301 mun ulagam * uṇḍu umiḻntāykku * avvulagam īraḍiyāl * 

 pin aḷandu kōḍal peridonṛē? ** - ennē! 

 tirumālē! * seṅgkaṇ neḍiyānē! * eṅgaḷ 

 perumānē! nī idanaip pēsu                    20 

“Is measuring the planetary systems in two steps a great feat for You who earlier (as a small baby) swallowed all those planetary systems and brought them out later? O husband of mother Lakṣmī! Our Lord! Wont You please clarify?”  

 

 

2302 pēsuvār * evvaḷavu pēsuvar * avvaḷavē 

 vāsa malart tuḻāy mālaiyān ** - tēsuḍaiya 

 cakkarattān * saṅginān sārṅgattān * poṅgarava 

 vakkaranaik konṛān vaḍivu                   21 

“The auspicious qualities and incredible deeds of the Lord (are unlimited and can not be told completely) who is decorated with garlands of tulasī leaves and fragrant flowers; who wields the effulgent disc, the conch, and the bow Śārṅga; and who killed Dantavakra who challenged Him with great fanfare can be praised by anyone according to his ability (it is auspicious anyhow).”  

 

2303 vaḍivār muḍikōṭṭi * vānavarhaḷ * nāḷum 

 kaḍiyār malar tūvik kāṇum - paḍiyānai ** 

 semmaiyāl uḷḷuruhic * cevvanē neñjamē! * 

 meymmaiyē kāṇa virumbu                    22 

“O heart! You should have the true desire and engage in pure devotional service to see and worship the Lord who is worshipped daily by the nitya-muktas by bowing down with their crowned heads and offering fragrant flowers.”  

 

2304 virumbi viṇ maṇ aḷanda * añjiṛaiya vaṇḍār * 

 surumbu toḷaiyil senṛūda ** - arumbum 

 punantuḻāy mālaiyān * ponnaṅgkaḻaṛkē * 

 manam tuḻāy mālāy  varum                   23 

“My heart is always attracted to the beautiful lotus feet of the Lord who enjoyed measuring the earth and the upper planetary systems and who is adorned with garlands of fresh tulasī leaves which are swarmed by lovely-winged bees which blow air and keep the garlands fresh.”   

 

2305 varuṅgāl irunilanum * māl visumbum kātṛṛum * 

 neruṅgu tī nīr uruvum ānān ** - porundum 

 suḍarāḻi * onṛuḍaiyān sūḻ kaḻalē * nāḷum 

 toḍarāḻi neñjē! toḻudu              24 

“O my devoted heart! Always worship and catch hold of the lotus feet of the Lord—which capture the hearts of the devotees—who is the vast earth, unlimited sky, air, fire, and water; and, who wields the effulgent disc.”   

 

2306 toḻudāl paḻudunḍē? * tūnīr ulagam * 

 muḻudunḍu moykuḻalāḷ āycci ** - viḻuduṇḍa

vāyānai * māl viḍai ēḻ setṛṛānai * vānavarkkum 

 sēyānai neñjē! siṛandu                 25 

“O heart! Is there anything wrong with lovingly worshiping the Lord who swallowed the planetary systems with the oceans and also the butter churned by mother Yaśodā with lovely hair; who tamed the seven demoniac bulls; and, who is not reachable to the demigods even?”  

 

2307 siṛanda en sindaiyum * seṅgkaṇ aravum * 

 niṛainda sīr nīḷ kacci uḷḷum ** - uṛaindaduvum 

 veṅkaṭamum veqkāvum * vēḷukkaip pāḍiyumē * 

 tām kaḍavār taṇtuḻāyār                26 

“The eternal abodes of the Lord who is adorned with a garland of cool tulasī leaves are my loving heart, the bed of red-eyed Ananta Śeṣa, opulent Tirukkacci, Tiruveṅkaṭam, Tiruveqkā, and Tiruvelukkai.”[2] 

 

2308 ārē tuyaruḻandār * tunbutṛṛārāṇḍaiyār? * 

 kārē malinda karuṅgaḍalai ** - nērē 

 kaḍaindānaik * kāraṇanai nīraṇai mēl * paḷḷi 

 aḍaindānai nāḷum aḍaindu                   27 

“Do the devotees who worship daily the Lord who churned the great Ocean of Milk; who is the cause of all causes; and who reclines on Ananta Śeṣa in the Milk Ocean, even if they have committed sins, suffer the sinful reactions? (Not at all); Where are the devotees who underwent miseries? (Nowhere).”   

 

2309 aḍaindadu aravaṇai mēl * aivarkkāy * anṛu 

miḍaindadu * bhārata vempōr ** - uḍaindaduvum 

 āycci pāl mattukkē * ammanē! vāḷ eyitṛṛup * 

 pēycci pāl uṇḍa pirān                     28 

“The Lord who sucked the breast of the demon Pūtanā and killed her reclines on the bed of Ananta Śeṣa; He orchestrated the great Mahābhārata war for the sake of the five Pāṇḍavas and yet He cringed in fear when threatened by mother Yaśodā with a churning rod; O my Lord!”    

 

2310 pēycci pāl uṇḍa * perumānaip pērndeḍuttu * 

 āycci mulai koḍuttāḷ añjādē ** - vāytta 

 iruḷār tirumēni * inpavaḷac cevvāy * 

 teruḷā moḻiyānaic cērndu         29 

“(Even though) Kaṇṇan sucked the breast of the demon Pūtanā and killed her, mother Yaśodā picked Him up and gave her breast for sucking without fear; to her, the dark-hued Lord with coral red lips is just a baby blabbering sweetly.”    

 

2311 sērnda tirumāl * kaḍal kuḍandai veṅkaṭam * 

 nērnda en sindai niṛai visumbum ** - vāynda 

 maṛai pāḍagam anantan * vaṇtuḻāyk kaṇṇi * 

 iṛai pāḍiyāya ivai                       30 

“The Ocean of Milk, Kumbakoṇam, Tiruveṅkaṭam, my pure heart, the vast Vaikuṇṭha -loka, the sacred Vedas, Tiruppāḍagam, and Ananta Śeṣa are the eternal royal abodes of the benevolent Lord who is adorned with a beautiful garland of tulasī leaves.” 

 

2312 ivaiyavan kōyil * iraṇiyanadu āgam * 

 avai seydu ari uruvam ānān ** - sevi teriyā 

 nāgattān * nāl vēdattu uḷḷān * naṛavētṛṛān 

 pāgattān pāṛkaḍal uḷān                                31 

“Following are the abodes of the Lord who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva and split the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu; who reclines on the bed of Ananta Śeṣa who sees and hears with His eyes; who is the object of the Vedas; who accommodates Śiva, who holds the Ganges, in His body; and who reclines in the Milk Ocean:”  

 

2313 pāṛkaḍalum veṅkaṭamum * pāmbum panivisumbum * 

 nūṛkaḍalum nuṇṇūla tāmarai mēl ** - pāṛpaṭṭu 

 irundār manamum * iḍamāhak koṇḍān * 

 kurundositta gōpālakan                              32 

“The Ocean of Milk, Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills, Ananta Śeṣa, Vaikuṇṭha, free from material miseries, ocean-like scriptures, and the hearts of the yogis whose senses are fixed on the Hṛdaya-kamala (of the Lord) described in the revealed scriptures are the abodes of Kaṇṇan who broke the Indian frankincense tree (Boswellia serrata) (and killed the demon hiding in it).”  

 

2314 bālahanāy * ālilai mēl paiya * ulagellām 

 mēl oru nāḷ * uṇḍavanē! meymmaiyē ** - mālavanē! 

 mandarattāl * mānīrk kaḍal kaḍaindu * vānamudam 

 andarattārkku īndāy nī anṛu                          33 

“O Supreme Lord! Once You reclined on a tender banyan leaf as a baby after swallowing all the planetary systems! Once You churned the vast Ocean of Milk with Mandara Mountain as the pivot and gave the divine ambrosia to the demigods.”   

 

2315 anṛu ivvulagam * aḷanda asaivē kol? * 

 ninṛu irundu vēḷukkai nīḷnagarvāy ** - anṛu 

 kiḍandānaik * kēḍil sīrānai * mun kañjaik 

 kaḍandānai neñjamē! kāṇ                                 34 

“O heart! Worship the Lord who extended and measured all the planetary systems, probably to take rest after the effort, sat in Tiruvēḷukkai, and reclined in Tiruvekkā; who has unlimited auspicious qualities; and who killed Kaṁsa.”   

 

2316 kāṇ kāṇ ena * virumbum kaṇgaḷ * kadirilagu 

 pūṇdār * agalattān ponmēni ** - pāṇkaṇ 

 toḻil pāḍi * vaṇḍaṛaiyum toṅgalān * sempon 

 kaḻal pāḍi yām toḻudum kai                       35 

“My eyes long to see the divine form of the Lord whose chest is adorned with luminant jewels and garland; let us worship the reddish lotus feet of the Lord who is decorated with a garland swarmed by humming bumblebees and sing in sweet tunes praising His glorious activities.”  

 

2317 kaiya kanalāḻi * kārkkaḍalvāy veṇsaṅgam * 

 veyya gadai sārṅgam veñjuḍarvāḷ ** - seyya 

 paḍai paravai pāḻi * pani nīrulagam * 

 aḍi aḷanda māyar avarkku

“The Ocean of Milk is the reclining place for the Lord whose activities are incredible like measuring the planetary systems and who wields powerful weapons like the fiery disc, white conch that appeared in the dark ocean, the mighty mace, Śārṅga bow, and the shining sword.”  

 

2318 avaṛku aḍimaippaṭṭēn * agattān puṛattān * 

 uvarkkum karuṅgaḍal nīr uḷḷān ** - tuvarkkum 

 pavaḷavāyp pūmahaḷum * panmaṇip pūṇāram * 

 tihaḻum tirumārban tān                         37 

“I have surrendered to the Lord on whose chest mother Lakṣmī with reddish coral-like mouth resides and is decorated with jewels and necklaces studded with various gemstones; He is present in the salty ocean water, in the air, and in my heart (as Supersoul).”   

 

2319 tānē tanakku uvaman * tan uruvē evvuruvum * 

 tānē tavavuruvum tāragaiyum ** - tānē 

 eri suḍarum māl varaiyum * eṇtisaiyum * aṇḍattu 

 irusuḍarum āya iṛai                          38 

“All objects that exist are His transformation; He is the austere Brahmā and ṛṣis, the stars, the fire, the mountain, the eight directions, the sun, and the moon; nobody is equal to Him or above Him.” 

 

2320 iṛaiyāy nilanāhi * eṇtisaiyum tānāy * 

 maṛaiyāy maṛaip poruḷāy vānāy ** - piṛai vāynda 

 veḷḷattaruvi * viḷaṅgoli nīr veṅkaṭattān * 

 uḷḷattin uḷḷē uḷan                           39 

“The Supreme Lord who is the earth, the eight directions, the Vedas, the object of the Vedas, the ether, and who resides on Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills which rises high touching the moon, and has many waterfalls, is in my heart.” 

 

2321 uḷan kaṇḍāy nalneñjē! * uttaman enṛum 

 uḷan kaṇḍāy * uḷḷuvār uḷḷattu - uḷan kaṇḍāy ** 

 viṇṇoḍuṅgak kōḍuyarum * vīṅgaruvi veṅkaṭattān * 

 maṇṇoḍuṅgat tān aḷanda man                 40 

“O my dear heart! The Supreme Personality of Godhead who resides on Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills which rises high touching the upper planets and has many waterfalls; who measured the earth in just one step; and who is always enthusiastic to protect His devotees eternally resides in the hearts of His pure devotees.”    

 

2322 mannu maṇi muḍi nīṇḍu * aṇḍam pōy eṇtisaiyum * 

 tunnu poḻil anaittum sūḻ kaḻalē ** - minnai 

 uḍaiyāhak koṇḍu * anṛu ulagaḷandān * kunṛam 

 kuḍaiyāha ā kātta kō                            41

 

“The Lord who once held Govardhana Hills as an umbrella to protect the cow herds measured the planetary systems with His gemstones-studded crown piercing through the coverings of the universe, His step covering all the eight directions and the vast Bhū-maṇḍala, and with the lightning illuminating His yellow garment.”

“(O heart!) Know the great anger of the Lord who as a cowherd boy grazed the herds of cows; who enchanted all by playing His flute; who split the mouth of the mighty horse demon; who is blue sapphire gemstone-hued; and who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva and tore off the strong body of Hiraṇyakaśipu.” 

 

2324 sinamā mada kaḷitṛṛin * tiṇmaruppaic cāyttu * 

 punamēya bhūmi adanai ** - tanamāhap 

 pēragalattu uḷḷoḍukkum * pērāra mārvanār * 

 ōragalattu uḷḷadu ulagu                        43 

“The planetary systems are maintained by the will of the Lord who broke the tusk (and killed) the demoniac elephant; who swallowed and protected the planetary systems; and, whose chest is decorated with valuable jewels.” 

 

2325 ulagamum * ūḻiyum āḻiyum * oṇkēḻ 

 alar kadirum * sentīyum āvān ** - pala kadirhaḷ 

 pāritta * paimpon muḍiyān aḍi iṇaikkē * 

 pūrittu en neñjē! puri                           44 

“O my heart! Desire for attaining the lotus feet of the Lord who is the planetary systems, the pralaya, the oceans, the sun & moon with luminant rays, and the reddish fire, and who is adorned with a beautiful golden crown which is shining with many hues.”   

 

2326 purindu mada vēḻam * māppiḍiyōḍu ūḍi * 

 tirindu sinattāl porudu ** - virinda sīr 

 veṇkōṭṭu * muttudirkkum veṅkaṭamē * mēloru nāḷ 

 maṇkōṭṭuk koṇḍān malai                       45 

“Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills where the mighty male elephant mates with the female elephant, fights with it and roams around and rams angrily the rocks, spilling white pearls, is the abode of the Lord who once lifted the earth on His feline tooth.”    

                                                           

2327 malai mugaḍu mēl vaittu * vāsukiyaic cutṛṛi * 

 talai mugaḍu tān oru kai patṛṛi ** - alai muhaṭṭu 

 aṇḍam pōy nīr teṛippa * anṛu kaḍal kaḍaindān * 

 piṇḍamāy ninṛa pirān                         46 

“The Lord who is the cause of all causes once kept Mantara Mountain on His back (in the form of a tortoise) as the churning rod, tied serpent Vāsuki around it as the churning rope, held the head of the serpent in His hand, and churned the Ocean of Milk, and the waves reached the end of the universe.”    

 

2328 ninṛa perumānē! nīr ētṛṛu * ulagellām 

 senṛa perumānē! * seṅgkaṇṇā! ** - anṛu 

 turagavāy kīṇḍa * tuḻāy muḍiyāy! * naṅgaḷ 

 narakavāy kīṇḍāyum nī                     47 

“O Vāmana who obtained the water of vow (from Bali)! O Lord who extended to all the planetary systems! Reddish lotus-eyed Kaṇṇā! You split the mouth and destroyed the horse demon! O Lord whose hair is decorated with tulasī garland! You have destroyed our path to hell too!”   

 

2329 nīyanṛē nīr ētṛṛu * ulagam aḍi aḷandāy? * 

 nīyanṛē ninṛu nirai mēyttāy? ** - nīyanṛē 

 māvāyuram piḷandu * māmarudinūḍu pōy * 

 devāsuram porudāy setṛṛu?                48

“Didn’t You accept the water of vow and measure all the planetary systems with Your lotus foot? Didn’t You stand (lifting Govardhana Hills) to protect the herds of cows? Didn’t You split the mouth of the horse demon; crawl in between the huge twin arjuna trees and bring them down; and, orchestrate the war between the demigods and the asuras and eliminate the asuras?” 

 

2330 setṛṛaduvum * sērā iraṇiyanai * senṛētṛṛup 

 petṛṛaduvum * mānilam pinnaikkāy ** - mutṛṛal 

 muriyētṛṛin * munninṛu moympoḻittāy! * mūric 

 curiyēṛu saṅgināy! sūḻndu                  49 

“O Lord wielding the conch in Your hand! You stood fearlessly in front of the demoniac bulls and tamed them for the sake of Nappinnai! You killed effortlessly the defiant Hiraṇyakaśipu! You begged and obtained the planetary systems from Bali!  

 

2331 sūḻnda tuḻāy alaṅgal * sōdi maṇi muḍi māl * 

 tāḻnda aruvit taḍavaraivāy ** - āḻnda 

 maṇi nīrc cunai vaḷarnda * māmudalai konṛān * 

 aṇi nīla vaṇṇattavan                     50 

“The elegant bluish-hued Supreme Lord whose gemstones-studded crown is glowing because of the abundant garlands of tulasī decorating it killed the huge crocodile in the lovely lake on the hill from which many waterfalls pour down.”  

 

2332 avanē aruvaraiyāl * āniraihaḷ kāttān * 

 avanē aṇi marudam sāyttān ** - avanē 

 kalaṅgāp perunagaram * kāṭṭuvān kaṇḍīr * 

 ilaṅkāpuram erittān eydu                 51 

“Know that He is the Lord who lifted the unshakeable Govardhana Hills and protected the herds of cows; know that He is the Lord who brought down the twin arjuna trees; that Lord who burnt Laṅkā and shot arrows (to kill the asuras) will show us Vaikuṇṭha, the abode devoid of material miseries.”

 

2333 eydān marāmaram * ēḻum irāmanāy * 

 eydān ammān maṛiyai ēndiḻaikkāy ** - eydaduvum 

 tennilaṅgaik kōn vīḻa * cenṛu kuṛaḷ uruvāy * 

 munnilaṅgaik koṇḍān muyanṛu                     52 

“Appeared as Rāma and shot an arrow to pierce the seven sal trees; for the sake of beautiful mother Sītā, He followed and shot an arrow to kill the magical deer; He shot arrows to kill Rāvaṇa, the king of Laṅkā; and He went as Vāmana to Bali, and with His deceptive skills retrieved the planetary systems.”    

 

2334 muyanṛu toḻu neñjē! * mūri nīr vēlai * 

 iyanṛamarattu ālilaiyin mēlāl ** - payinṛaṅgōr 

 maṇṇalaṅgkoḷ veḷḷattu * māyak kuḻaviyāy * 

 taṇṇalaṅgal mālaiyān tāḷ                     53 

“O heart! Worship with love the lotus feet of the Lord, decorated with a cool fresh garland, who appeared as a wonderful baby, reclined for a long time on a banyan leaf floating on the pralaya waters flooding and destroying the planetary systems.” 

 

2335 tāḷāl sakaṭam * udaittup pagaḍundi * 

 kīḷā marudiḍai pōyk kēḻalāy ** - mīḷādu 

 maṇṇagalam kīṇḍu * aṅgōr māduhanda mārvaṛku * 

 peṇṇagalam kādal peridu                  54 

“The love of the Lord—who kicked and scattered Śakaṭāsura; who kicked and killed the demoniac elephant; who crawled in between the twin arjuna trees and brought them down; who appeared as a bore and retrieved the earth from the depth of the ocean; and on whose chest resides mother Lakṣmī with love—for Bhū-devī is immense.”

“When the Lord is adorned with a big necklace on His mountain-like chest, it looks like a huge cloud is streaked with lightning; and, the colour of His long eyes, are reddish like the lotus flower which is swarmed by bees humming melodiously shaming others’ singing.”      

 

2337 niṛam veḷidu seydu * pasidu karidenṛu * 

 iṛai uruvam yām aṛiyōm eṇṇil ** - niṛaivuḍaiya

nāmaṅgai tānum * nalam puhaḻa vallaḷē? * 

 pūmaṅgai kēḷvan polivu                          56 

“When we try to think of the body hue of the Supreme Lord, we realise that we do not know if it is white or red or green or black; (but) can Saraswati-devī, who is the epitome of knowledge, glorify the incredible qualities of the husband of the mother Lakṣmī? (No, she also doesn’t know).    

 

2338 polindiruṇḍa kārvānil * minnē pōl tōnṛi * 

 malindu tiruvirunda mārvan ** - polinda

garuḍan mēl koṇḍa * kariyān kaḻalē * 

 teruḍan mēl kaṇḍāy teḷi                      57 

“(O heart!) Know that the lotus feet of the dark-hued Lord whose chest is adorned by mother Lakṣmī shine like a lightning streak in the dark rain cloud and is carried by the resplendent Garuḍa is transcendental to jñāna.”     

 

2339 teḷinda silādalattin * mēl irunda mandi * 

 aḷinda kaḍuvanaiyē nōkki ** - viḷaṅgiya 

 veṇmadiyam * tāvennum veṅkaṭamē * mēloru nāḷ 

 maṇmadiyil koṇḍuhandān vāḻvu                 58 

“Tiruveṅkaṭam, where the female monkey sitting on a rock asks her mate to catch and bring the bright moon (the hills are very high almost touching the moon), is the abode of the Supreme Lord who cleverly retrieved the planetary systems from Bali.” 

 

2340 vāḻum vahai aṛindēn * mai pōl neḍuvaraivāy * 

 tāḻum aruvi pōl tār kiḍappa ** - sūḻum 

 tirumāmaṇivaṇṇan * seṅgkaṇmāl * eṅgaḷ 

 perumān aḍi sērap petṛṛu                        59 

“I realised the way for deliverance by surrendering to the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord whose chest is adorned with a garland which looks like two streams of waterfalls on a dark huge mountain and attracts mother Lakṣmī who never leaves Him; who is blue sapphire gemstone-hued; and has eyes like the reddish lotus flower.”       

 

2341 petṛṛam piṇai marudam * pēymulai māccakaṭam * 

 mutṛṛakkāttūḍu pōy uṇḍudaittu ** - katṛṛuk 

 kuṇilai * viḷaṅgkanikkuk koṇḍu eṛindān * vetṛṛip 

 paṇilam vāy vaittu uhandān paṇḍu                60 

“The Lord who protected the herds of cows; who crawled in between the twin arjuna trees (and brought them down); who sucked the (poison-laced) breast of Pūtanā (and killed her); who kicked (and scattered) Śakaṭāsura; and, who threw the calf demon on the woodapple tree (killing two demons) blew the conch victoriously (in Mahābhārata war).”  

 

2342 * paṇḍellām veṅkaṭam * pāṛkaḍal vaikuntam * 

 konḍaṅgu uṛaivārkkuk kōyil pōl ** - vaṇḍu 

 vaḷaṅgiḷarum nīḷsōlai * vaṇpūṅgkaḍigai *

“The Ocean of Milk, Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills, wonderful Tirukkaḍigai Hills which has vast groves swarmed by bumblebees, Tiruviṇṇagaram of the eternally youthful Lord were the abodes (earlier) of the Lord eternally residing in Vaikuṇṭha (before my heart became His only abode).”[3]  

 

2343 viṇṇagaram veqkā * viritirainīr veṅkaṭam * 

 maṇṇagaram māmāḍa vēḷukkai ** - maṇṇagatta 

 ten kuḍandai * tēnār tiruvaraṅgam tenkōṭṭi * 

 tan kuḍaṅgai nīr ētṛṛān tāḻvu               62 

“Tiruviṇṇagaram, Tiruveqkā, Tiruveṅkaṭam with a lot of waterfalls, Tiruvēḷukkai which is like Vaikuṇṭha on earth and has many huge palaces, lovely Kumbakōṇam, Śrīraṅgam which has many honey-rich groves, Tirukkōṭṭiyūr are some of the abodes of the (humble) Lord (as Vāmana) who accepted the water of vow (from Bali).”  

 

2344 tāḻ saḍaiyum nīḷmuḍiyum * oṇmaḻuvum cakkaramum * 

 sūḻaravum ponnāṇum tōnṛumāl ** - sūḻum 

 tiraṇḍaruvi pāyum * tirumalai mēl endaikku * 

iraṇḍuruvum onṛāy isaindu                    63   

“It’s incredible that my Lord in Tirumala Hills where there are many waterfalls displays a unified form (Śaṅkara Nārāyaṇa) of the two different forms (Śiva and Nārāyaṇa) – a long and hanging matted hair, wielding a weapon called maḻu (axe) and also the disc weapon, a serpent around the hip, and a gold chain around the hip    

 

2345 isainda aravamum * veṛpum kaḍalum * 

 pasaindaṅgamudu paḍuppa ** - asaindu 

 kaḍainda varuttamō? * kacci veqkāvil * 

 kiḍandu irundu ninṛaduvum aṅgu?            64 

“Is the Lord reclining in Tiruveqkā in Kāncipuram, sitting (in Tiruppāḍagam), and standing in (Tiruūragam) because He became tired after churning the ocean with serpent Vāsuki as the rope, Mandara Mountain as the rod, and the ocean as the pot and generated the ambrosia?   

 

2346 aṅgaṛkiḍarinṛi * andip poḻudattu * 

 maṅga iraṇiyanadu āgattai ** - poṅgi 

 ari uruvamāyp piḷanda * ammānavanē * 

 kari uruvam kombosittān kāyndu              65 

“The Lord who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva, split the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu and killed him at dusk to protect Prahlāda, is the one who broke the tusk and killed the demoniac elephant (as Kaṇṇan).”   

 

2347 kāyndiruḷai mātṛṛik * kadirilagu māmaṇihaḷ * 

 ēynda paṇakkadir mēl vevvuyirppa ** - vāynda 

 madhu kaiṭavarum * vayiṛuruhi māṇḍār * 

 adu kēḍavarkku iṛudiyāṅgu                  66 

“Lord Ananta Śeṣa breathed fire from His hoods, decorated with glowing gemstones, burning the demons Madhu and Kaiṭabha; those who are inimical to the Lord will face a similar fate.”     

 

2348 āṅgu malarum * kuviyumālundivāy * 

 ōṅgu kamalattin oṇpōdu ** - āṅgait 

 tigiri suḍar enṛum * veṇsaṅgam * vānil 

 pagaru madiyenṛum pārttu                67 

“The lovely lotus flower that sprouted from the naval of the Lord keeps blossoming and closing mistaking the bright disc on the Lord’s right hand for sun and the white conch in His left hand for moon.”  

 

2349 pārtta kaḍuvan * sunai nīr niḻal kaṇḍu * 

 pērttōr kaḍuvan enap pērndu ** - kārtta 

 kaḷaṅganikkuk * kai nīṭṭum veṅkaṭamē * mēl nāḷ 

 viḷaṅganikkuk kanṛeṛindān veṛpu               68 

“Tiruveṅkaṭam where a monkey, looking at its reflection in the lake water, fearing it to be another monkey leaves the place but comes back out of desire, stretches its hand asking for fruits (from its reflection), is the abode of the Lord who threw the calf demon on the woodapple tree (to kill the demon in it).”       

 

 

2350 veṛpenṛu * veṅkaṭam pāḍum * viyantuḻāy 

 kaṛpenṛu sūḍum * karuṅgkuḻal mēl ** - mal ponṛa 

 nīṇḍa tōḷ māl kiḍanda * nīḷ kaḍal nīrāḍuvān * 

 pūṇḍa nāḷ ellām puhum                             69 

“The devotee always sings about Tiruveṅkaṭam; adorns tulasī leaves (offered to the Lord) on his hair; every morning he bathes thinking that he is bathing in the Ocean of Milk where the Lord who crushed the wrestlers with His strong arms reclines.”    

 

2351 puhumadattāl * vāy pūsik kīḻ tāḻndu * aruvi 

 uhu madattāl * kāl kaḻuvik kaiyāl ** - mihu madat tēn 

 viṇḍa malar koṇḍu * viṛal veṅkaṭavanaiyē * 

 kaṇḍu vaṇaṅgum kaḷiṛu                           70 

“The male elephant in musth on Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills cleanses its mouth and does ācamana (sipping water for purification) with the temporin flowing (from temporal ducts on the sides of the head), washes its legs with it falling like a waterfall, plucks a fully blossomed flower filled with delicious honey, and offers it to the Supreme Lord Tiruveṅkaṭa and bows down.” 

 

2352 kaḷiṛu muhil kuttak * kai eḍuttōḍi * 

 oḷiṛu marupposikai yāḷi - biḷiṛi 

 viḻa ** konṛu ninṛadirum * veṅkaṭamē * mēl nāḷ 

 kuḻakkanṛu koṇḍeṛindān kunṛu                     71 

“Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills where while the elephant runs trumpeting and attacks the clouds (thinking they were enemy elephants), the mighty yāḷi breaks the tusk of the elephant, kills the shrieking elephant and roars victoriously is the hill of the Lord who threw the calf demon on the demon on the woodapple tree (and killed them both).”   [4]  

 

2353 kunṛu onṛināya * kuṛamahaḷir kōlvaḷaik kai *

 viḷaṅgu madi kōḷ viḍukkum * veṅkaṭamē * mēlai

“Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills where the wives of the hunters, who never leave the hills, and whose hands are decorated with colourful bangles, climb over and play with the bamboo plants which grow very tall reaching the moon, (fight with and) win over the evil shadow planet Rāhu and release the obstructed bright rays of the moon is the divine abode of the Lord of the eternally youthful nitya-muktas in Vaikuṇṭha.”   

 

2354 iḍam valam ēḻ pūṇḍa * iravit tēr ōṭṭi * 

 vaḍamuga veṅkaṭattu mannum ** - kuḍam nayanda 

 kūttanāy ninṛān * kuraikaḻalē kūṛuvadē * 

 nāttannāl uḷḷa nalam                         73 

“The most beneficial act that one can perform with one’s tongue is to glorify the Lord who (as the Supersoul in the heart of the sun-god) conducts his chariot, pulled by seven horses, passing the Meru Mountain on its left or right; who resides eternally on Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills; who as Kaṇṇan performed pot dance expertly; and, whose legs are adorned with anklets that tinkle loudly.”[5] 

 

2355 nalamē validu kol? * nañjūṭṭuvan pēy * 

 nilamē puraṇḍu pōy vīḻa ** - calamē tān 

 veṅgkoṅgai uṇḍānai * mīṭṭāycci ūṭṭuvān * 

 tan koṅgai vāy vaittāḷ sārndu               74 

“When baby Kaṇṇan sucked the poison-laced breast and killed the demon Pūtanā who came with the evil intention to kill Him, mother Yaśodā immediately picked Him up and offered her breast to Him; How great her love for Kaṇṇan was?!” 

 

2356 sārndagaḍu tēyppat * taḍāviya kōṭṭucci vāy * 

 ūrndiyaṅgum veṇmadiyin oṇmuyalai ** - sērndu 

 sinavēṅgai pārkkum * tirumalaiyē * āyan 

 punavēṅgai nāṛum poruppu                           75 

“Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills where when the moon slowly scrapes over the tall peaks, the hungry tiger intensely keeps looking at the rabbit (shadow) and tall grown Indian kino trees shed fragrant flowers is the hill of Kaṇṇan.”        

 

2357 poruppiḍaiyē ninṛum * punal kuḷittum * aindu 

 neruppiḍaiyē niṛkavum nīr vēṇḍā ** - viruppuḍaiya 

 veqkāvē sērndānai * meymmalar tūyk kai toḻudāl * 

 aqkāvē tīvinaihaḷ āyndu                       76 

“(O wordly people!) There is no need to stand on mountain tops, dip in rivers and lakes, or stand amid the five types of fires and perform austerity; if one sincerely worships the reclining Lord in the famous Tiruveqkā, offering flowers, one’s sinful reactions will wilt away.”

 

2358 āynda arumaṛaiyōn * nānmugattōn nankuṛaṅgil * 

 vāynda kuḻaviyāy vāḷ arakkan ** - ēynda 

 muḍippōdu * mūnṛēḻ enṛeṇṇinān * ārnda 

 aḍippōdu naṅgaṭku araṇ                             77 

“The lotus feet of the Lord who lay as a baby on the lap of the four-headed Brahmā, the expert Vedic scholar, and cautioned him that Rāvaṇa had come by counting ten with His toes is our eternal shelter.”

Note: It is told that once Rāvaṇa pleased Brahmā by performing severe austerities and begged for boons; the Lord took the form of a baby, lay on the lap of Brahmā and cautioned him that the person was Rāvaṇa in disguise by counting ten (to indicate ten heads) with His toes and granting him the boons would be disastrous.    

 

2359 araṇām namakku enṛum * āḻi valavan * 

 muraṇāḷ valam suḻinda moymban ** - saraṇā mēl 

 ēdu gadi? ēdu nilai? * ēdu piṛappu? ennādē * 

 ōdu gadi māyanaiyē ōrttu                     78

“(O heart!) If you surrender to the mighty Lord—without wondering what will be your fate, your next birth, etc., —who wields the disc on His right hand and who snuffed the life and power of the Mura, He will be our eternal protector; realize this and worship that Lord who displays incredible qualities and activities as Your only shelter.”   

Note: The story of Bhaumāsura – how he kidnapped and made captive sixteen thousand princesses by collecting them from the palaces of various kings and how he and his companion Mura were killed by Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Lord of wonderful character –is all described by Śukadeva Gosvāmī to King Parīkṣit in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.59). 

 

2360 ōrtta manattarāy * aintaḍakki ārāyndu * 

 pērttāl piṛappēḻum pērkkalām ** - kārtta

 niraiyāra mārvanaiyē ninṛu                       79

“If one keeps one’s five senses under control, contemplates on the entanglements of material life, renounces the material life and focuses the mind on the Lord who is ocean-hued, and is adorned with a garland of fresh, fragrant tulasī leaves, and many ornaments covering His chest, one can get freed from the cycle of birth and death.      

 

2361 ninṛu edirāya * niraimaṇittēr vāṇan tōḷ * 

 onṛiya īraiñjñūṛu uḍan tuṇiya ** - venṛilaṅgum 

 ār paḍuvān * nēmi aravaṇaiyān * sēvaḍikkē 

 nēr paḍuvān tān muyalum neñju                    80 

“My heart desires to surrender only to the lotus feet of the Lord who wields the victorious and sharp disc weapon which effortlessly cut off the one thousand shoulders of Bāṇāsura who came riding on his bejeweled chariot to fight (with the Lord) and who reclines on Ananta Śeṣa.”

“O my heart! Even though it is impossible to contemplate the Lord's unlimited glories, try to fix on His benevolence, and glorify Him; even if we think of the Lord once, He enters and stays eternally in the heart; (unfortunately) why are we not able to remember Him?”  

 

2363 uṇaril uṇarvariyan * uḷḷam puhundu * 

 puṇarilum kāṇbariyan uṇmai ** - iṇaraṇaiyak 

 koṅgaṇaindu vaṇḍaṛaiyum * taṇtuḻāyk kōmānai * 

 eṅgaṇaindu kāṇḍum ini?                     82 

“We can not understand the Lord with our efforts; even though He is present in our heart, He can not be realised; then, how and where can we see the Lord who is adorned with a garland of cool tulasī leaves and honey-dripping flowers swarmed by humming bumblebees?”  

 

2364 iniyavan māyan * ena uraipparēlum * 

 iniyavan kāṇbariyanēlum ** - iniyavan 

 kaḷḷattāl maṇ koṇḍu * viṇ kaḍanda paiṅgaḻalān *

“Though people say, ‘He is a great mystic’, or He is difficult to be seen, that Lord who begged land from Bali and cheated him by measuring all the planetary systems remains in my heart.”      

 

2365 uḷanāya * nānmaṛaiyin uṭporuḷai * uḷḷattu 

 uḷanāhat * tērndu uṇarvarēlum ** - uḷanāya 

 vaṇtāmarai neḍuṅgaṇ * māyavanai yāvarē? * 

 kaṇḍār uhappar kavi                             84 

“Though jñānīs can understand that the Lord who is the subject of the four Vedas is in our hearts, is there anybody who has seen that incredible Lord whose eyes are lovely and long like a lotus? (Nobody); some compose songs and feel happy.”  

 

 

2366 kaviyinār kaipunaindu * kaṇṇār kaḻal pōy * 

 seviyinār kēḷviyarāyc cērndār ** - puviyinār 

 pōtṛṛi uraikkap * poliyumē? * pinnaikkā 

 ētṛṛuyirai aṭṭān eḻil                           85 

“Even if all the people of the world come together to glorify the Lord, chant songs, bow down to His majestic lotus feet, and hear about His incredible activities, is it possible to truly describe the glories of the Lord who killed the seven bulls for the sake of Nappinnai?” 

 

2367 eḻil koṇḍu * minnukkoḍi eḍuttu * vēhat 

 toḻil koṇḍu * tān muḻaṅgit tōnṛum ** - eḻil koṇḍa 

 nīr mēha manna * neḍumāl niṛam pōla *  

 kār vānam kāṭṭum kalandu                        86 

“The dark sky during the rainy season—with the dark rain cloud moving very fast (like the elephant king Gajendra), and thundering (like the conch Pāñcajanya), and the lightning streak like mother Lakṣmī—resembles the Lord with the dark body hue.” 

 

2368 kalandu maṇi imaikkum kaṇṇā! * nin mēni 

 malarndu * maradagamē kāṭṭum ** - nalantihaḻum 

 kondinvāy vaṇḍaṛaiyum * taṇtuḻāyk kōmānai * 

 andi vān kāṭṭum adu                          87 

“O Kaṇṇā adorned with the effulgent Kaustubha gemstone! The bright emerald stone resembles Your body hue; the evening sky resembles You adorned with a garland of fresh tulasī leaves and honey-dripping flowers swarmed by humming bumblebees.”  

 

2369 adu nanṛu idu tīdenṛu * aiyappaḍādē * 

 madhu ninṛa taṇtuḻāy mārvan ** - podu ninṛa * 

 ponnaṅgkaḻalē toḻumin * muḻu vinaihaḷ 

 munnam kaḻalum muḍindu                    88 

“Without wondering ‘What’s right?’ and ‘What’s wrong?’ worship the most desirable lotus feet of the Lord adorned with a garland of fresh tulasī leaves and honey-dripping flowers; certainly all the sinful reactions will be destroyed.”   

 

2370 muḍinda poḻudil kuṛavāṇar * ēnam 

 paḍinduḻusāl * paintinaihaḷvitta ** - taḍindeḻunda 

 vēyṅgkaḻai pōy * viṇ tiṛakkum veṅkaṭamē * mēloru nāḷ 

 tīṅgkuḻal vāy vaittān silambu                 89 

“Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills where the old hunters sow grain seeds in the lands dug by the wild pigs (as they cannot plough the lands) and the cut bamboo plants still grow sky-high (due to the fertility of the lands) is the hill of Kaṇṇan who played His bamboo flute very sweetly.”  

 

2371 silambum seṛikaḻalum * senṛisaippa * viṇṇāṛu 

 alambiya sēvaḍi pōy ** aṇḍam - pulambiya tōḷ 

 eṇtisaiyum sūḻa * iḍam pōdādu en kolō? * 

 vaṇṭuḻāy māl aḷanda maṇ                     90 

“When the (Lord Trivikrama’s) lotus feet, adorned with anklets ringing loudly and washed by the celestial Ganges water, touched the coverings of the universe, there wasn’t enough space to expand for His shoulders which have covered the eight directions; weren’t the fourteen planetary systems too small for the Lord who is adorned with a beautiful garland of tulasī leaves?      

 

2372 maṇ uṇḍum * pēycci mulai uṇḍum ātṛṛādāy * 

 veṇṇey viḻuṅga vehuṇḍu ** āycci - kaṇṇik 

 kayitṛṛināl kaṭṭat * tān kaṭṭuṇḍu irundān * 

 vayitṛṛinōḍu ātṛṛā mahan                          91 

“When her son (Kaṇṇan) could not fill His stomach even after swallowing all the cosmic creation (during pralaya) and sucking milk from the poisoned-laced breast of the demon Pūtanā stole and ate butter, mother Yaśodā became very angry and tied Him up with a rope with many knots; the all-powerful Lord remained bound (like a normal child).”

Note: Rope with many knots: The pūrvācāryas have explained that since mother Yaśodā was tying Him up often with a rope, Kaṇṇan had cut all the long ropes in the house into small pieces. So, mother Yaśodā had to tie many small ropes together to make a single rope long enough to tie up Kaṇṇan. That’s why the rope had many knots – ‘Kaṇṇinuṇ siṛuttāmbu.’ This way Kaṇṇan made it difficult to tie Him up but yielded to mother Yaśodā’s helplessness and surrender, displaying His love for His devotees.      

 

2373 mahan oruvarkku allāda * māmēni māyan * 

 mahanām avan mahan tan kādal - mahanai ** 

 siṛai seyda vāṇan tōḷ * setṛṛān kaḻalē * 

 niṛai seydu en neñjē! ninai                     92 

“O my heart! Surrender to the lotus feet of the mystical Lord with an incredible body who is not a son to anybody (not born because of karma but for the sake of His pastimes), who was a son (of Vasudeva), and who cut off the one thousand shoulders of Bāṇāsura because he imprisoned Aniruddha, the dear son of His son Pradyumna.”

2374 ninaittu ulagil ār teḷivār? * nīṇḍa tirumāl * 

 anaittulagum uḷ oḍukki āl mēl ** - kanaittulavu 

 veḷḷattōr piḷḷaiyāy * meḷḷat tuyinṛānai * 

 uḷḷattē vai neñjē! uyttu                  93 

“O my heart! Surrender to the consort of mother Lakṣmī who grew (to measure the planetary systems); who became a mystical child, swallowed the cosmic creation, and floated on a banyan leaf in the pralaya waters; is there anybody in this world who desires to surrender to Him and get delivered? (Nobody)”   

 

2375 uyttu uṇarvennum * oḷi koḷ viḷakkētṛṛi * 

 vaittu avanai nāḍi valaippaḍuttēn ** - mettenavē 

 ninṛān irundān * kiḍandān en neñjattu * 

 ponṛāmai māyan puhundu                          94 

“Lighting the lamp of transcendental wisdom I searched out the Lord and captured Him in my heart; He, happily settled in my heart – (first) He stood; (then) He sat; (finally) He lay down.”

Note: Pēyāḻvār is referring to the three Divya Desams in Kāncipuram, Tamiḻ Nāḍu – Tiruūragam (standing), Tiruppāḍagam (sitting), and Tiruveqā (lying).   

 

2376 puhundu ilaṅgum * andip poḻudattu * ariyāy 

 ihaḻnda * iraṇiyanadu āgam ** - sugirndeṅgum 

 sindap piḷanda * tirumāl tiruvaḍiyē * 

 vandittu en neñjamē! vāḻttu                 95 

“O my heart! Bow down to and glorify the lotus feet of the consort of mother Lakṣmī who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva and at dusk split the body of the arrogant Hiraṇyakaśipu, blood splashing all around.”   

 

2377 vāḻttiya vāyarāy * vānōr maṇimaguḍam * 

 tāḻtti vaṇaṅgat taḻumbāmē ** - kēḻtta 

 aḍit tāmarai * malar mēl maṅgai maṇāḷan * 

 aḍit tāmaraiyāmalar                            96 

“The lotus feet of the husband of mother Lakṣmī, born on a lotus flower, which the demigods glorify, and when they bow down, their gemstones-studded crowns touch them causing scars.”   

 

2378 alar eḍutta undiyān * āṅgu eḻilāya * 

 malar eḍutta māmēni māyan ** - alar eḍutta 

 vaṇṇattān * māmalarān vār saḍaiyān * enṛivargaṭku 

 eṇṇat tān āmō? imai                           97 

“Can kamala tree flower-hued Indra, lotus-flower born Brahmā, or matted-haired Śiva comprehend the Lord from whose navel a lotus has sprouted and who is ironwood flower-hued (dark blue)? (Not possible)

Note: Kamala tree (Mallotus philippensis) flower is golden yellow-hued. 

 

2379 imam sūḻ malaiyum * iruvisumbum kātṛṛum * 

 amañjūḻndaṛa viḷaṅgit tōnṛum ** - naman sūḻ 

 narahattu * nammai naṇuhāmal kāppān * 

 turagattai vāy piḷandān toṭṭu                98 

“The Lord who tore off the mouth of Keśī, the horse demon as huge as the Himālayas, as high as the sky, and as fast as the wind will protect us from going to hell.”    

 

2380 * toṭṭa paḍai eṭṭum * tōlāda venṛiyān * 

aṭṭabuyakarattān añjñānṛu ** - kuṭṭattuk 

 kōḷ mudalai tuñjak * kuṛitteṛinda cakkarattān * 

 tāḷ mudalē naṅgaṭkuc cārvu                99 

“The lotus feet of the Lord who wields the eight transcendental weapons (conchshell, wheel, club, lotus flower, arrow, bow, shield, and sword) is ever victorious and can never be vanquished; who is present as Tiruvaṭṭabuyakara (eight-handed) in Kāncipuram, Tamiḻ Nāḍu; and who threw the disc weapon to cut off the head of the mighty crocodile is our sole refuge.”     

 

2381 * sārvu namakkenṛum cakkarattān * taṇtuḻāyt 

 tārvāḻ * varai mārban tān muyaṅgum ** - kārārnda 

 vānamaruminnimaikkum * vaṇtāmarai neḍuṅgaṇ * 

 tēnamarum pū mēl tiru                      100 

“Mother Lakṣmī who is loved by the Lord wielding the disc and adorned with a cool garland of tulasī leaves on His mountain-like chest; who is shining like lightning in the cloudy sky; who has lotus-like long eyes; and, whose abode is a honey-rich lotus flower is our eternal shelter.”
