Mudaliyāṇḍān aruḷic ceydadu
kaidai sēr pūmpoḻil sūḻ kacci nagar vanduditta *
poygaip pirān kaviñar pōrēṛu * - vaiyattu
aḍiyavarhaḷ vāḻa aruntamiḻ nūtṛṛandādi *
paḍiviḷaṅgac ceydān parindu
“In the famous city of Kāncipuram, Tamiḻ Nāḍu, surrounded by beautiful gardens which have many screwpine plants, Poigai Āḻvār the mighty bull amongst poets was born. He kindly rendered the Nūtṛṛandādi (One hundred songs), in chaste Tamiḻ, so that the devotees of this world may cherish (the songs) and live.”
2082 * vaiyam tagaḷiyā * vārkaḍalē neyyāha *
veyya kadirōn viḷakkāha ** - seyya
suḍar āḻiyān aḍikkē * sūṭṭinēn sol mālai *
iḍarāḻi nīṅguhavē enṛu
“Keeping the earth as the lamp, the surrounding ocean as ghee, and the sun with hot rays as the light, I offered this garland of words at the lotus feet of the Lord who wields the resplendent disc, praying that the ocean of obstacles may kindly be cleared.”
2083 enṛu kaḍal kaḍaindadu? * evvulagam nīrētṛṛadu? *
onṛum adanai uṇarēn nān ** - anṛu adu
aḍaittu uḍaittuk * kaṇ paḍutta āḻi * idu nī
paḍaittu iḍandu uṇḍu umiḻnda pār
“I do not know anything about when the (Milky) ocean was churned or which world was received by the offering of water (by Bali to Vāmana) ; You built a bridge across an ocean; You broke open (the covering of the earth to bring the water to the earth from) the Garbhodaka ocean; You recline enjoying Yoga-nidrā in the Milky Ocean; this earth is created by You, held up by You, swallowed by You, and later brought out by You.”
2084 pāraḷavum ōraḍi vaittu * ōraḍiyum pāruḍutta *
nīraḷavum sella nimirndadē ** - sūruruvin
pēyaḷavu kaṇḍa * perumān! aṛihilēn *
nīyaḷavu kaṇḍa neṛi
“O Lord! You covered the entire earth with one step; You extended another step to reach the Garbhodaka ocean that surrounds the earth; You understood the evil intention of the demon Pūtanā who came in the form of a mother; I cannot measure or understand Your incredible actions.”
2085 neṛi vāsal tānēyāy ninṛānai * aindu
poṛi vāsal * pōrkkadavam sārtti ** - aṛivānām
ālamara nīḻal * aṛam nālvarkku anṛu uraitta *
ālam amar kaṇḍattaran
“Śiva, who holds kālakūṭa poison (produced during the churning of the Milk Ocean) in his throat, once sat under the shade of a banyan tree and taught dharma to four sages (Agastya Muni, Dakṣa, Pulastya, and Kaśyapa); by controlling the tormenting five senses, will he be able to understand the Lord who is the cause of all causes? (No)”
2086 aran nāraṇan nāmam * ānviḍai puḷḷūrdi *
urai nūl maṛai uṛaiyum kōyil ** - varai nīr
karumam aḻippu aḷippuk * kaiyadu vēl nēmi *
uruvam eri kār mēni onṛu
“His (Śiva) name is Hara indicating destruction, while Lord’s name is Nārāyaṇa indicating protection; his carrier is the arrogant bull, while the Lord’s carrier is Garuḍa who chants Vedic hymns incessantly; scriptures on him are written by human beings, while Lord is described in the holy Vedic scriptures; his abode is the tough Mount Kailāsa, while the Lord’s abode is the Ocean of Milk reflecting His benevolence; he is responsible for destruction, while the Lord is responsible for protection; he wields the deadly Tri-śūla while the Lord wields the disc which is a merciful fiery form of time; he has a material body, while the Lord’s body is rain-cloud-hued sat-cit-ānanda form.
2087 onṛum maṛandaṛiyēn * ōda nīr vaṇṇanai nān *
inṛu maṛappanō? ēḻaigāḷ! ** - anṛu
karuvaraṅgattuḷ kiḍandu * kai toḻudēn kaṇḍēn *
tiruvaraṅga mēyān tisai
“O people bereft of wisdom! Even when I was in the womb, I looked in the direction of Śrīraṅgam temple and folded my hands in worship; I did not forget the cool ocean-hued Lord even for a moment; today (when I have fully realised about Him) will I forget Him (not at all possible).”
(Poigai Āḻvār was actually found in a small pond near Śrī Yatottakāri temple, Tiruvekkā, Kāncipuram. Poigai means pond).
2088 tisaiyum * tisaiyuṛu deyvamum * deyvattu
isaiyum * karumaṅgaḷ ellām ** - asaivil sīrk
kaṇṇan neḍumāl * kaḍal kaḍainda * kārōda
vaṇṇan paḍaitta mayakku
“Kaṇṇan, who has unlimited auspicious qualities; who is glorious; who churned the Milk Ocean; and who is dark-hued like the rain cloud or dark sea, has created many illusory material wonders like this world, and the demigods with their limited powers (like creation) to distract those who do not surrender to Him.”
2089 mayaṅga valampuri vāy vaittu * vānattu
iyaṅgum * eṛikadirōn tannai ** - muyaṅgu amaruḷ
tērāḻiyāl maṛaittadu * en? nī tirumālē! *
pōrāḻik kaiyāl porudu
“O consort of Lakṣmī! On the battlefield (in the Mahābhārata war) You blew Your conch shattering the hearts of the Kaurava’s army, and challenged Bhīṣma with a chariot wheel as if it were His Sudarśana cakra*; why did You cover the sun with Your cakra?*”
* Seeing Bhīṣma killing the foremost Pāṇḍava warriors, and that Arjuna was not fighting to his full power, Kṛṣṇa became thoughtful. Bhīṣma could kill the combined armies of the gods and Asuras if left unchecked. Kṛṣṇa threw down the reins and leapt from the chariot. Taking up a nearby chariot wheel, He raised it above His head as if it were His own favorite weapon, the Sudarśana chakra. He ran toward Bhīṣma as a lion might run at an elephant.
*Arjuna had vowed that before the end of the day’s battle, he would kill Jayadratha who had killed his son Abhimanyu on the previous day. Only minutes remained till sunset, and he could hardly see Jayadratha, so thick was the shower of arrows, darts and lances thrown by the Kaurava heroes. Kṛṣṇa saw His friend’s predicament. He raised His right hand and immediately His Sudarśana chakra appeared at the end of His outstretched finger. Throwing that disc, He covered the sun like an eclipse and at once darkness enveloped the field. Thinking that the sun had set, the Kauravas cheered. Then Kṛṣṇa asked Arjuna to shoot a powerful arrow at Jayadratha who stood unprotected and Arjuna did so.
2090 porukōṭṭōr ēnamāyp * pukkiḍandāykku * anṛu un
oru kōṭṭin mēl kiḍandadanṛē ** - viritōṭṭa
sēvaḍiyai nīṭṭit * tisai naḍuṅga viṇ tuḷaṅga *
māvaḍivin nī aḷanda maṇ
“O Lord adorned with dazzling earrings! When You extended Your lotus foot to measure the world, those on the earth and the heaven were trembling in fear; when You appeared as a boar with canine teeth and tusk and brought up the earth from the Garbhoda ocean, wasn’t the (massive) earth resting on Your single tusk?”
2091 maṇṇum malaiyum * maṛikaḍalum mārudamum *
viṇṇum viḻuṅgiyadu mey enbar ** - eṇṇil
alagaḷavu kaṇḍa * sīrāḻiyāykku * anṛu iv
vulagaḷavum uṇḍō? un vāy
“The devotees swear that (as a baby) You swallowed the earth, seven mountains, the oceans, the wind, the sky and all; contemplating on this, since Your organs like leg can be extended beyond the coverings of the earth and You have unlimited auspicious qualities, when You swallowed the earth etc., was Your mouth as big as this earth? (There is no doubt that His mouth could be opened as big as He wanted.)”
2092 vāy avanai alladu * vāḻttādu * kai ulagam
tāyavanai alladu * tām toḻā ** - pēy mulai nañju
ūṇāha uṇḍān * uruvoḍu pēr allāl *
kāṇā kaṇ kēḷā sevi
“My mouth will not glorify anyone other than the Supreme Lord; my hands will not fold in worship to anyone other than Trivikrama who expanded to measure the planetary systems; my eyes will not see any other form and my ears will not hear any other names than of Kaṇṇan who sucked the poisoned-laced breast of the demon Pūtanā.”
2093 sevi vāy kaṇ mūkku * uḍal enṛu aimpulanum * sentī
puvi kāl * nīr viṇ bhūtam aindum ** - aviyāda
jñānamum vēḷviyum * nal aṛamum enbarē *
ēnamāy ninṛāṛku iyalvu
“It is told that the five knowledge-seeking sense organs like the ear, the body made of the five elements, uninterrupted devotional service without any motivation, yajna (like saṅkīrtana-yajña for Kali-yuga), and good qualities are the tools required to attain the Lord who appeared as a boar; (is it true?)”
Note: The Śrī Vaiṣṇavas believe that the Lord’s causeless mercy and surrender to Him are the only means to attain Him. In contrast, the other Vaiṣṇava sampradāyas like Madhva, and Gauḍīya sampradāyas consider uninterrupted devotional service without any motivation, even after surrender, as the only way.
2094 iyalvāha * īntuḻāyān aḍikkē sella *
muyalvār iyal amarar munnam ** - iyalvāha
nīdiyālōdi * niyamaṅgaḷāl parava *
ādiyāy ninṛār avar
“Sādhana-siddhas have taken great efforts to attain the lotus feet of the Lord adorned with a lovely garland of tulasī leaves; (to help the people in general) the Lord takes great efforts (like appearing as incarnations, sending His messengers) to educate the people to learn Vedas thoroughly, realise their purport and worship Him to attain Him.”
2095 avaravar tām tām * aṛindavāṛu ētti *
ivarivar emperumān enṛu ** - suvar misaic
cārttiyum * vaittum toḻuvar * ulagaḷanda
mūrtti uruvē mudal
“People, according to their mode of passion or ignorance, glorify certain demigods, promote them as gods, draw their images on the wall, or establish their idols, and worship them; (however) the Lord who measured all the planetary systems is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.”
2096 mudalāvār mūvarē * ammūvar uḷḷum
mudalāvān * mūri nīr vaṇṇan ** - mudalāya
nallān aruḷ allāl * nāma nīr vaiyagattu *
pallār aruḷum paḻudu
“Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva are the primary gods; Among them, the dark ocean-hued Lord is the Supreme; He is the cause of all causes, is full of auspicious qualities, and His mercy will confer auspicious benefits (which are permanent like devotion); in this material world, except His mercy, the mercy of the demigods are of no use (as the benefits conferred by them are material and temporary).”
2097 paḻudē palapagalum * pōyina enṛu * añji
aḻudēn * aravaṇai mēl kaṇḍu - toḻudēn **
kaḍalōdam kāl alaippak * kaṇ vaḷarum * seṅgkaṇ
aḍalōda vaṇṇar aḍi
“Today I saw and worshipped the lotus feet of the Lord who is reclining with His feet gently touched by the waves; who has lotus eyes; and whose body hue resembles the colour of the stormy ocean; I cried that I have wasted my life so far (by not becoming a devotee of the Lord earlier) and in fear of how the future days would be (in case he could not continue his devotion).”
2098 aḍiyum paḍi kaḍappat * tōḷ tisai mēl sella *
muḍiyum visumbu aḷandadu enbar ** - vaḍi ugirāl
īrndān * iraṇiyanadu āgam * iruñjiṛaip puḷ
ūrndān ulagaḷanda nānṛu
“It is said that when the Lord, who tore open the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu with His sharp nails; who is carried by Garuḍa with large wings, measured the planetary systems, His legs measured the earth, the shoulders expanded in all the directions, and the crown measured the celestial world.” (Poigai Āḻvār expresses His misfortune that he could not see the pastimes).
2099 nānṛa mulait talai nañjuṇḍu * uṛi veṇṇey
tōnṛa uṇḍān * venṛi sūḻ kaḷitṛṛai - ūnṛi **
poruduḍaivu kaṇḍānum * puḷḷin vāy kīṇḍānum *
marudiḍai pōy maṇṇaḷanda māl
“The benevolent Lord sucked the poison-laced breast of the demon Pūtanā; gobbled up the butter stored in the pots kept in the rope hangars and became known as ‘butter-thief’; fought with and killed the mighty demoniac elephant; split the beak of the demon Bakāsura; crawled in between (and brought down) the twin arjuna trees, and measured the planetary systems.”
2100 mālum karuṅgaḍalē! * en nōtṛṛāy? * vaiyagam uṇḍu
ālinilait tuyinṛa āḻiyān ** - kōlak
karu mēnic * ceṅgkaṇ māl kaṇ paḍaiyuḷ * enṛum
tirumēni nī tīṇḍap petṛṛu
“O dark ocean in trance (because of caressing the body of the Lord)! What austerities did you undertake to caress always the body of the reclining Lord who swallowed all the planetary systems and reclined on a tender banyan leaf; who wields the disc; and who has red lotus-like eyes?”
2101 petṛṛār taḷai kaḻalap * pērndu ōr kuṛaḷ uruvāy *
setṛṛār paḍi kaḍanda seṅgkaṇ māl ** - natṛṛā
marai malarc cēvaḍiyai * vānavar kai kūppi *
nirai malar koṇḍu * ēttuvarāl ninṛu
“O (how fortunate are the demigods)! The demigods worshipped with fresh flowers and bowed down to the red lotus-like elegant feet of the red lotus-like-eyed Lord, who appeared as Kaṇṇan, released His parents from the shackles; and who appeared as a dwarf Vāmana and measured and retrieved the planetary systems from Bali who was proud.”
2102 ninṛu nilam aṅgai * nīr ētṛṛu mūvaḍiyāl *
senṛu tisai aḷanda seṅgkaṇmāṛku ** - enṛum
paḍai āḻi puḷḷūrdi * pāmbaṇaiyān pādam *
aḍai āḻi neñjē! aṛi
O my stubborn heart! Attain the lotus feet of the Lord who reclines on the serpent bed; who went to the sacrificial arena of Bali and received the offered water in His beautiful palm, and in three measures by His lotus feet retrieved all the planetary systems; (know that) the red lotus-eyed Lord always wields the disc, and is carried by Garuḍa.”
2103 aṛiyum ulagellām * yānēyum allēn *
poṛikoḷ siṛai uvaṇam ūrndāy ** - veṛi kamaḻum
kāmbēy mentōḷi * kaḍai veṇṇey uṇḍāyai *
tāmbē koṇḍu ārtta taḻumbu
“O Lord carried by Garuḍa! (Please know) That because You gobbled up the fragrant butter churned and stored by bamboo-like slim-shouldered mother Yaśodā, she tied You with a rope (to a mortar) which left a scar (on Your stomach) is not known to me alone but to the entire world.”
2104 taḻumbirunda sārṅga nāṇ * tōyndavām aṅgai *
taḻumbirunda tāḷ śakaṭam sāḍi ** - taḻumbirunda
pūṅgkōdaiyāḷ veruvap * ponpeyarōn mārbu iḍanda *
vīṅgōda vaṇṇar viral
(Āḻvār describes to his heart the identification marks on the body of the Lord)
“Look! There are scars on the elegant arms due to the rubbing by the string of the Sārṅga bow of the dark ocean-hued Lord; there is a scar on His lotus feet which kicked (and shattered) Śakaṭāsura; and when He tore open with great anger the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu, watched with fear by mother Lakṣmī (ever on His chest), scars appeared on His fingers.”
2105 viralōḍu vāy tōynda * veṇṇey kaṇḍu * āycci
uralōḍu uṛap piṇitta nānṛu ** - kural ōvādu
ēṅgi ninaindu * ayalār kāṇa irundilaiyē? *
ōṅgōda vaṇṇā! urai
“O dark ocean hued Kaṇṇā! Catching You with butter smeared on Your fingers and mouth, when mother Yaśodā tied You to a mortar, didn’t You cry loudly and still think how to escape and steal more butter, and didn’t all the neighbours come and watch the scene? Tell the truth.”
2106 urai mēl koṇḍu * en uḷḷam ōvādu * eppōdum
varai mēl * maradagamē pōla ** - tirai mēl
kiḍandānaik * kīṇḍānai * kēḻalāyp bhūmi
iḍandānai ētti eḻum
“I always meditate on and glorify the wonderful pastimes of the Lord who reclines on the Ocean of Milk like a (white) mountain covered with emerald-green hue; who split the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu; and, who appeared as a boar and retrieved the earth (from the depth of the ocean).”
2107 eḻuvār viḍai koḷvār * īn tuḻāyānai *
vaḻuvā vahai ninaindu vaigal - toḻuvār **
vinaic cuḍarai nanduvikkum * veṅkaṭamē * vānōr
manac cuḍarait tūṇḍum malai
“(The Lord on) Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills extinguishes the fire of sinful reactions of all the three types of devotees – be it those who stop worshipping once they get the wealth they desired or those who also stop worshipping once they get liberated (kaivalya or inner freedom desired by the Māyāvādīs) or the pure devotees who never stop worshipping or meditating on the Lord adorned with a fragrant garland of tulasī leaves but kindles the flame of devotion in the hearts of the nitya-muktas.”
2108 malaiyāl kuḍai kavittu * māvāy piḷandu *
silaiyāl marāmaram ēḻ setṛṛu ** - kolai yānaip
pōrkkōḍu osittanavum * pūṅgkurundam sāyttanavum *
kārkkōḍu patṛṛiyān kai
“The lotus hand(s) of the Lord which wield(s) the conch which thunders like the rain cloud are/is those/that which held Govardhana Hills as an umbrella; split open the mouth of the horse demon; threw the arrow which pierced through the seven sal trees; broke the tusk of the demoniac elephant; and brought down the wild orange tree (in which a demon was hiding).”
2109 kaiya valampuriyum nēmiyum * kārvaṇṇattu
aiya! * malarmagaḷ nin āgattāḷ ** - seyya
maṛaiyān nin undiyān * māmadiḷ mūnṛeyda *
iṛaiyān nin āgattu iṛai
“O rain-cloud-hued Lord! The conch and the disc decorate Your hands; Śrī- Lakṣmī never leaves Your chest; Brahmā who keeps chanting the Vedas is on (the lotus sprouted from) Your stomach; and Śiva who burnt Tripura protected by a high ramparts is on the right side of Your body.” (Lord’s opulences are described).
2110 iṛaiyum nilanum * iruvisumbum kātṛṛum *
aṛai punalum sentīyum āvān ** - piṛai maruppin
paiṅgkaṇ māl yānai * paḍu tuyaram kāttu aḷitta *
seṅgkaṇ māl kaṇḍāy teḷi
“O my heart, know these! The red lotus-eyed Lord is the master of Vaikuṇṭha; He is the earth, the vast sky, the wind, the stormy oceans, and the reddish fire; He saved the elephant king Gajendra, who has tusks curved like the crescent moon and bright eyes, from great misery.” (Lord’s opulence and benevolence).
2111 teḷidāha * uḷḷattaic cenniṛīi * jñānat
teḷidāha * naṅguṇarvār sindai ** - eḷidāhat
tāy nāḍu kanṛē pōl * taṇ tuḻāyān aḍikkē *
pōy nāḍik koḷḷum purindu
“The hearts of those who keep their mind under control, fix it on devotion (to the Lord) and realise that ‘the Lord is the master and we are His servants,’ will easily and lovingly attain the lotus feet of the Lord adorned with a garland of cool tulasī leaves like a calf searches out and reaches its mother cow in a big herd without any difficulty.” (The way to attain the Lord).
2112 puri oru kai patṛṛi * ōr pon āḻi ēndi *
ari uruvum āḷ uruvumāhi ** - eri uruva
vaṇṇattān mārbiḍanda * māl aḍiyai allāl * matṛṛu
eṇṇat tān āmō? imai
“O heart! Is it possible to think of even for a moment anything else other than the lotus feet of the benevolent Lord who wields a conch in one hand and the matchless, beautiful disc in the other; who appeared as Lord Nṛhari and tore open the chest of the fiery-hued Hiraṇyakaśipu with His nails?” (Not at all possible).
2113 imaiyāda kaṇṇāl * iruḷ agala nōkki *
amaiyāp poṛi pulaṅgaḷ aindum - namaiyāmal **
āgattu aṇaippār * aṇaivarē * āyira vāy
nāgattaṇaiyān nagar
“Will those who do not remove the darkness of ignorance, realise their true position (as servants of the Lord) and do not control the sense organs but enjoy embracing the women attain Vaikuṇṭha, the abode of the Lord who reclines on the bed of Ananta Śeṣa who has one thousand mouths?” (Never).
2114 nagaram aruḷ purindu * nānmugaṛkup pū mēl *
pagara maṛai payanda paṇban ** - peyarinaiyē
pundiyāl sindiyādu * ōdi uru eṇṇum *
andiyālām payan aṅgen?
“What is the use of chanting Vedic mantras or performing sandhyāvandanam and other karma-kāṇḍīya obligations if one does not meditate on or chant the holy names of the Lord who has kindly given shelter to Brahmā in the lotus sprouted from His navel; who revealed the Vedic scriptures for chanting and understanding the truth and, who has unlimited auspicious qualities.”
2115 en oruvar mey enbar * ēḻ ulaguṇḍu * ālilaiyil
mun oruvanāya mugilvaṇṇā! ** - ninnuruhip
pēyt tāy mulai tandāḷ * pērndilaḷāl * pēr amarkkaṇ
āyt tāy mulai tandavāṛu!
“O rain-cloud-hued Lord! You swallowed the seven planetary systems and reclined on a banyan leaf (as a baby) all alone! The great saints say it is true that while the demon Pūtanā who came as a mother expressing great love for you and offered her (poisoned-laced) breast to be sucked by You fell dead, in the same place of death, mother Yaśodā breastfed You with true love. Isn’t it wonderful?”
2116 āṛiya anbil * aḍiyār tam ārvattāl *
kūṛiya kutṛṛamāk koḷḷal nī - tēṛi **
neḍiyōy! aḍi * aḍaidaṛkanṛē * īraindu
muḍiyān paḍaitta muraṇ
“(O Lord!) Please do not take offense to the faulty prayers offered to You with love by those devotees who are not pure; isn’t it true that despite the offenses deliberately committed by Rāvaṇa didn’t He (Jaya and Vijaya) attain Your glorious lotus feet eventually?
2117 muraṇai vali * tolaidaṛku āmenṛē * munnam
taraṇi tanadāhat tānē ** - iraṇiyanaip
puṇ niranda vaḷḷugirāl * ponnāḻik kaiyāl * nī
maṇ irandu koṇḍa vagai
“Didn’t You beg land from Bali—with the same hands which wield the mighty disc and have sharp nails with which You tore open the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu who arrogantly thought that the earth was his own—to curb his pride?”
2118 vagaiyaṛu nuṇkēḷvi * vāyvārhaḷ * nāḷum
puhai viḷakkum pūmpunalum ēndi ** - tisai tisaiyin
vēdiyarhaḷ * senṛu iṛaiñjum veṅkaṭamē * veṇsaṅkham
ūdiya vāy māl uganda ūr
“Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills which is worshipped daily from all directions by the wise Vedic scholars—who know what actions are to be performed and not to be performed—with lamps, incense, flowers, and water is the favourite abode of the Lord who blew the white conch (in Mahābhārata war).”
2119 ūrum vari aravam * oṇ kuṛavar māl yānai *
pēra eṛinda perumaṇiyai ** - kār uḍaiya
min enṛu * putṛṛaḍaiyum veṅkaṭamē * mēla surar
emmenu māladiḍam
“Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills where when the alert hunters throw big gemstones on the elephants to chase them away from their fields, the wandering striped serpents, thinking that the brilliance of the gemstones is the lightning in the dark clouds (the black body of the elephants), in fear crawl hurriedly into the anthills.”
2120 iḍandadu bhūmi * eḍuttadu kunṛam *
kaḍandadu kañjanai mun añja ** - kiḍandaduvum
nīrōda mākaḍalē * ninṛaduvum veṅkaṭamē *
pērōda vaṇṇar peridu
“The glorious Lord who is vast, dark ocean-hued lifted the earth on His tusk; held the Govardhana Hills as an umbrella; killed Kaṁsa who was in fear; reclined in the Milky Ocean and stood on Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills.”
2121 peruvil pagaḻik * kuṛavar kaic centī *
veruvip punam tuṛanda vēḻam ** - iruvisumbil
mīn vīḻak * kaṇḍañjum veṅkaṭamē * mēl asurar
kōn vīḻak kaṇḍu uhandān kunṛu
“Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills, where the hunters wielding large bows and arrows hold fire torches to chase away the elephant and it halts in fear of the falling meteor (thinking that the hunters have thrown the fire torch on its way), is the abode of the Lord who was happy to have eliminated the enemy (Hiraṇyakaśipu) of His devotee Prahlāda.”
2122 kunṛanaiya kutṛṛam seyinum * guṇam koḷḷum *
inṛu mudalāha en neñjē! ** - enṛum
puṛan uraiyē āyinum * ponnāḻik kaiyān *
tiṛan uraiyē sindittiru
“O my heart! Keep chanting the glories of the Lord, who wields the disc, even if you do not have a true love for Him; (if you do so) from today, even if you commit mountainous mistakes, the Lord will ignore them and consider only the good deeds.”
2123 tirumagaḷum maṇmagaḷum * āymagaḷum sērndāl *
tirumagaṭkē tīrndavāṛu en kol? ** - tirumagaḷ
pālōdam sindap * paḍanāgaṇaik kiḍanda *
mālōda vaṇṇar manam
“How is it that the heart of the Lord who reclines on the raised-hooded serpent bed, with refreshing droplets of the Milk Ocean spraying on Him, is attracted to mother Lakṣmī when all the three consorts – mother Lakṣmī, mother earth, and mother Nīlā serve Him together?”
2124 mana māsu tīrum * aṛuvinaiyum sārā *
danamāya tānē kaikūḍum ** - punamēya
pūntuḻāyān aḍikkē * pōdoḍu nīr ēndi *
tām toḻā niṛpār tamar
“Those devotees who worship the lotus feet of the Lord who is adorned with a garland of ever-fresh tulasī leaves, every early morning, with fresh flowers and water, will be rid of material miseries, great sinful reactions, and will attain true devotion automatically.”
2125 tamar uhandadu evvuruvam * avvuruvam tānē *
tamar uhandadu eppēr matṛṛappēr ** - tamar uhandu
evvaṇṇam sindittu * imaiyādu irupparē *
avvaṇṇam āḻiyānām
“The Lord who wields the disc will assume the form desired by His devotees; will take the name desired by them; and will display those auspicious qualities and activities desired and meditated upon by them.”
2126 āmē amararkku * aṛiya? adu niṛka *
nāmē aṛihiṛpōm nalneñjē! ** - pūmēya
mādhavattōn tāḷ paṇinda * vāḷ arakkan nīḷmuḍiyai *
pādamattāl eṇṇinān paṇbu
“O pious heart! Will the austere Brahmā, who sits on a lotus flower, and other demigods understand the auspicious qualities of the Lord who inscribed with His lotus foot the number of heads of Rāvaṇa when he approached Brahmā in disguise to obtain a boon? Certainly they can’t; only we (the devotees of the Lord) can understand His glories.”
Once when Rāvaṇa went in disguise to Brahmā to obtain a boon, the Lord in the form of a baby, was on the lap of Brahmā; the Lord inscribed with His toe the numbers one to ten to warn Brahmā that the ten-headed Rāvaṇa had come.
2127 paṇ purinda nānmaṛaiyōn * sennip pali ētṛṛa *
veṇpurinūl mārban vinai tīra ** - puṇ purinda
āgattān * tāḷ paṇivār kaṇḍīr * amarar tam
bhōgattāl bhūmi āḷvār
“Those who take shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord who pierced His chest (to bring out blood to fill the skull bowl stuck to the hand of Śiva) to relieve the curse of Śiva—who wears a white sacred thread and roams all around begging—which he acquired by cutting off the head of Brahmā who chants the four Vedas musically.”
2128 vāri surukki * madak kaḷiṛu aindinaiyum *
sēri tiriyāmal senniṛīi ** - kūriya
meyñjñānattāl * uṇarvār kāṇbarē * mēloru nāḷ
kainnāgam kāttān kaḻal
“Those who keep their five senses, which roam like elephants on masth, under control, totally avoiding sense gratification, and engage in pure devotional service will be able to realise the Lord, who liberated the elephant king, and will surely attain His lotus feet.”
2129 kaḻal onṛu eḍuttu * oru kai sutṛṛi ōr kai mēl *
suḻalum surāsurarhaḷ añja ** - aḻalum
seruvāḻi ēndinān * sēvaḍikkē sella *
maruvāḻi neñjē! magiḻ
“O heart engaged in devotional service! Just focus on attaining the lotus feet of Trivikrama—who extended one foot into the celestial world, with one hand swirled and threw away Namuci (son of Bali), and in the other hand wielded the effulgent disc weapon while the demigods in great distress (as to what harm to the Lord would be done by the asuras) and the asuras in great fear watched; —that’s true happiness.”

ādi kāṇbārkkum aridu
“Only those who engage in pure devotional service to get out of the cycle of birth and death in different bodies—sometimes in a lower body like a dog and sometimes in a higher body like a human similar to a (Spanish cherry flower) seed or a cowry shell is used by an expert businessman sometimes in a lower denomination and sometimes in a higher denomination—will be able to see the Lord who has a huge effulgent form like a large flame.”

“One who controls the five ‘difficult to control’ senses and engages in loving devotional service by offering fresh flowers will be able to see easily the Lord who received in His benevolent hand, the water poured to confirm the charity by the proud but truthful king Bali.”
2132 eḷidil iraṇḍaḍiyum kāṇbadaṛku * en uḷḷam
teḷiyat * teḷindoḻiyum sevvē ** - kaḷiyil
porundādavanaip * poral utṛṛu * ariyāy

“O my heart! If you overcome your delusion and realise the Lord, He also will be favourable to you; if you meditate on the holy names of the Lord who appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva to kill the arrogant and unrelenting Hiraṇyakaśipu, you will be able to see His lotus feet easily.”
2133 eṇmar padinoruvar * īraṛuvar ōriruvar *

tirumālaik kai toḻuvar senṛu
“The eight Vasus, the eleven Rudras, the twelve Ādityas, and the two Aśvinī-kumāras worship the Lord daily, bow down to Him, always chant Puruṣa-sūkta, ‘the garland of words,’ and offer various fresh flowers.”

“When the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī walks Ananta Śeṣa transforms into an umbrella; He becomes a siṁhāsana when the Lord sits; turns into wooden chappals when the Lord stands; always forms a soft bed when He reclines; becomes a lamp (when the Lord wants to see); changes into a silk cloth (to wrap around the Lord’s head); and be a pillow to embrace.”
2135 aravam aḍal vēḻam * ān kurundam puḷ vāy *
kuravai kuḍamulai maṛkunṛam ** - karavinṛi
viṭṭiṛuttu mēyttosittuk * kīṇḍu kōttāḍi * uṇḍu
aṭṭeḍutta seṅgaṇ avan
“The lotus-eyed Lord enacted His wonderful pastimes for all to see; He danced on and subdued the serpent Kālīya; broke the tusk of the demoniac elephant and killed it; graced the cows; brought down the arjuna trees; split the mouth of the demon Bakāsura in the form of a crane; enacted rāsa-līlā with the cowherd damsels; danced with the pots; sucked the poisoned breast of Pūtanā and killed her; killed the wrestlers of Kaṁsa; and lifted and held Govardhana Hills as an umbrella!”
2136 avan tamar * evvinaiyarāhilum * eṅgkōn

“Those who have the names of the pure devotees of the great cowherd boy Kaṇṇan who reclines on the serpent bed will be avoided by the Yamadutas saying, ‘Whatever be the deeds, good or bad, of the devotees of the Lord, still they are devotees of the Lord,’ and their actions are not analysed.”
2137 pērē varap * pidatṛṛal allāl em pemmānai *
ārē aṛivār? adu niṛka ** - nērē
kaḍik kamalattu uḷ irundum * kāṇgilān * kaṇṇan
aḍik kamalam tannai ayan
“All we can do is to keep blabbering the holy names of the Lord since who can truly understand the (unlimited) Lord? Even though Brahmā permanently resides on the effulgent lotus flower from the naval of Kaṇṇan, he has not been able to worship His lotus feet.”
2138 ayal ninṛa valvinaiyai * añjinēn añji *
uya nin tiruvaḍiyē sērvān ** - nayam ninṛa
nanmālai koṇḍu * namō nāraṇā ennum *
sol mālai katṛṛēn toḻudu
“To get relieved from the constant threat of past sinful reactions and attain Your lotus feet, I worshipped You with these sweet songs and realised the meaning of the mantra om namō nārāyaṇā.”
2139 toḻudu malar koṇḍu * dhūpam kai ēndi *
eḻudum eḻuvāḻi neñjē! ** - paḻudinṛi
mandiraṅgaḷ kaṛpanavum * māl aḍiyē kai toḻuvān *
andaram onṛillai aḍai
“O heart! Get up, and let us get delivered by worshipping the Lord with flowers and lamp; let this be your eternal activity; we have learned the mantras thoroughly only to worship the lotus feet of the benevolent Lord and attain Him. We shouldn’t waste any time.”
2140 aḍainda aruvinaiyōḍu * allal nōy pāvam *
miḍaindavai mīṇḍoḻiya vēṇḍil ** - nuḍaṅgiḍaiyai
mun ilaṅgai vaittān * muraṇ aḻiya * munnoru nāḷ
tan vil aṅgai vaittān saraṇ
“The only way to get rid of the callous past sinful reactions, the material miseries, diseases, and the sins we commit in this life which cover the ātmā is to surrender to the Lord who appeared as Rāma wielding His mighty bow and destroyed the arrogant Rāvaṇa who imprisoned the slender waisted mother Sītā in Laṅkā.”
2141 saraṇā maṛai payanda * tāmaraiyānōḍu *
maraṇāya mannuyirhaṭku ellām ** - araṇāya
pērāḻi koṇḍa * pirān anṛi matṛṛaṛiyādu *
ōrāḻi sūḻnda ulagu
“The Lord who wields the powerful disc weapon only knows the way to deliver everyone right from Brahmā to the ātmās who are eternal but covered by bodies which die; no one else on this world knows it.”
2142 ulagum ulagiṛanda ūḻiyum * oṇkēḻ
vilagu * karuṅgaḍalum veṛpum ** - ulaginil
sentīyum * mārudamum vānum * tirumāl tan
pundiyilāya puṇarppu
“The planetary systems, pralaya which devastates the lower and middle planetary systems, the stormy dark ocean, the mountains, the fire, the wind, and the sky have been created by the will of the Lord who is the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī.”

“The twin arjuna trees were brought down, the Indian frankincense tree, covered with flowers, was crashed, seven huge bulls were tamed for the sake of marrying Nappinnai, and the upper planets and the eight directions were covered by the shoulders of the Supreme Lord who reclines on the fragrant, cool, and soft bed of Ananta Śeṣa.”
2144 tōḷ avanai allāl toḻā * en sevi iraṇḍum *
kēḷ avanadu inmoḻiyē kēṭṭirukkum ** - nā nāḷum
kōḷ nāgaṇaiyān * kuraikaḻalē kūṛuvadē *
nāṇāmai naḷḷēn nayam
“My hands will not worship anyone other than the Lord; my ears will listen to only the words of glorification of the Lord who is the well-wisher of all living beings; my tongue chants always the glories of the lotus feet, adorned with ringing bracelets, of the Lord who reclines on the majestic Ananta Śeṣa; and, in this way, I will not resort shamelessly to material sense gratification.”
2145 nayavēn piṛar poruḷai * naḷḷēn kīḻārōḍu *
uyavēn uyarndavarōḍu allāl ** - viyavēn
tirumālai alladu * deyvam enṛu ēttēn *
varumāṛu en nam mēl vinai?
“I will not desire more than what is allocated to me (by the Lord); I will not associate with people engrossed in material sense gratification; I will associate only with the devotees of the Lord; I will not consider anyone else (the demigods) except the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī as God and glorify; and, I will not be conceited. (Then) How can I be afflicted with sinful reactions? (Never).”
2146 vinaiyāl aḍarppaḍār * vennaragil sērār *
tinaiyēnum tīkkadikkaṇ sellār ** - ninaidaṛku
ariyānaic * cēyānai * āyiram pērc ceṅgaṇ
kariyānaik kai toḻudakkāl
“Those who worship the Lord who is beyond mental speculation; who can not be approached easily; who has one thousand names; whose lotus eyes are reddish and who is dark-hued will not suffer from karmic reactions; they will not be caught again in the hellish cycle of birth and death; and, will never resort to bad ways.”
2147 kālai eḻundu * ulagam kaṛpanavum * katṛṛuṇarnda
mēlait talai maṛaiyōr vēṭpanavum ** - vēlaikkaṇ
ōrāḻiyān aḍiyē * ōduvadum ōrppanavum *
pērāḻi koṇḍān peyar
“The pure devotees get up early in the morning and meditate upon and the Vedic scholars desire - the lotus feet of the Lord who reclines in the Ocean of Milk and wields the matchless disc; the mahātmās chant and meditate upon the holy names of that Lord who is dark-hued like the massive ocean.”
2148 peyarum karuṅgaḍalē * nōkkum āṛu * oṇpū
uyarum * kadiravanē nōkkum ** -uyirum
tarumanaiyē nōkkum * oṇ tāmaraiyāḷ kēḷvan *

“Like a river which always runs to the ocean; the lovely lotus which blooms only on the appearance of the far away sun; and the ātma of a pure devotee which attains the Lord – the consciousness of a pure devotee will always be attached to the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī who is born on a lovely lotus flower.”
2149 uṇarvārār un perumai? * ūḻi tōṛūḻi *
uṇarvārār un uruvam tannai? ** - uṇarvārār
viṇṇagattāy! maṇṇagattāy! * veṅkaṭattāy! * nālvēdap
paṇṇagattāy! nī kiḍanda pāl?
“O Lord in Vaikuṇṭha! O Lord who incarnates in the material world! O Lord who stands on the Veṅkaṭa Hills! One who is revealed in the Vedic hymns! Who can realise Your glories even after analysing for millions of years? Who can realise Your transcendental spiritual form? Who can realise at least about the Ocean of Milk where You recline? (Nobody except Your pure devotees).”
2150 pālan tanadu uruvāy * ēḻulaguṇḍu * ālilaiyin
mēl anṛu nī vaḷarnda mey enbar ** - āl anṛu
vēlai nīr uḷḷadō? * viṇṇadō? maṇṇadō? *
sōlai sūḻ kunṛeḍuttāy! sollu
“O Lord who lifted and held Govardhana Hills as an umbrella! Your devotees vouch for Your incredible action of swallowing all the planetary systems during pralaya and reclining as a baby on a tender banyan leaf floating on the pralaya waters; please reveal if the banyan leaf was from the swelling pralaya waters or the sky or the earth (which had dissolved in the pralaya waters).”
2151 solluntanaiyum toḻumin viḻumuḍambu *
selluntanaiyum tirumālai ** - nallidaḻt
tāmattāl vēḷviyāl * tandirattāl mandirattāl *
nāmattāl ēttudirēl nanṛu
“Worship the Lord, the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī, by offering garlands of fresh flowers, by performing yajñas, by pious acts, or by chanting mantras till this temporary body is alive; it would be fine if You can praise Him by chanting His holy names as long as You can.”
2152 nanṛu piṇi mūppuk * kaiyagatṛṛi nāngu ūḻi *
ninṛu nilamuḻudum āṇḍālum ** - enṛum
viḍal āḻi neñjamē! * vēṇḍinēn kaṇḍāy *
aḍal āḻi koṇḍān māṭṭu anbu
“O my heart engrossed in devotional service! Even if you are awarded kaivalya-mokṣa which removes disease and old age or if you get to rule all the planetary systems, remain firm till the last and do not leave Your love for the Lord who wields the effulgent disc; I beg you.”[2]
2153 anbu āḻiyānai * aṇugennum nā avan tan *
paṇbāḻit tōḷ paravi ēttennum ** - munbu ūḻi
kāṇānaik kāṇ ennum kaṇ * sevi kēḷ ennum *
pūṇāram pūṇḍān pugaḻ
“My heart, full of love for the Lord, advises me to attain the Lord; my speech advises me to eulogise the elegant shoulders of the Lord; my eyes advise me to only look at and worship the Lord who has ignored my past evil life while I took His shelter; and my ears induce me to listen to the auspicious qualities of the Lord adorned with many jewels.”
2154 pugaḻvāy paḻippāy * nī pūntuḻāyānai *
igaḻvāy karuduvāy neñjē! ** - tigaḻ nīrk
kaḍalum malaiyum * iruvisumbum kātṛṛum *
uḍalum uyirum ētṛṛān
“O my heart! You may eulogise the Lord who is decorated with a garland of fresh tulasī leaves; you may accuse Him; you may honor Him or dishonor Him; (but remember) He is the one who maintains the oceans, mountains, the vast sky, the air, the bodies and the ātmās.”
2155 ētṛṛān puḷ ūrndān * eyil erittān mārviḍandān *
nītṛṛān niḻal maṇivaṇṇattān ** - kūtṛṛoru pāl
maṅgaiyān * pūmagaḷān vārsaḍaiyān * nīḷmuḍiyān
gaṅgaiyān nīḷkaḻalān kāppu
“Rudra who has a bull as his carrier, who destroyed Tripura, whose body is smeared with ash, who has given half of his body to his consort, who has long and matted hair, and who holds river Ganges in that hair is under the shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who has Garuḍa as His carrier, who split the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu, who is dark blue sapphire gemstone-hued, who is the consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī, who is adorned with a long helmet, and who has long feet.”
2156 kāppu unnai unnak kaḻiyum * aruvinaihaḷ
āppu unnai unna aviḻndoḻiyum ** - mūppu unnaic
cindippārkku illai * tirumālē! * nin aḍiyai
vandippār kāṇbar vaḻi
“O consort of Śrī-Lakṣmī! If one takes shelter under You, his material miseries will be eliminated; just by remembering You, even tough sinful reactions will be eliminated; for one who meditates on You, the six material changes (birth, growth, maintenance, production of by-products, dwindling, and death) will not be there; and, those who take shelter under Your lotus feet will attain the arcirādi-vartma, the path of liberation.”
2157 vaḻi ninṛu * ninnait toḻuvār * vaḻuvā
moḻi ninṛa * mūrttiyarē āvar ** - paḻudonṛum
vārāda vaṇṇamē viṇ koḍukkum * maṇ aḷanda
sīrān tiruveṅkaṭam
“(Is there any surprise that) Those who take shelter under You and engage in devotional service will attain svarūpa-siddhi as proclaimed in the scriptures (when) Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills, where the Lord who measured the planets is present, confers mokṣa without any difficulty to the devotees (?).”[3]
2158 veṅkaṭamum * viṇṇaharum veqkāvum * aqkāda
pūṅgkiḍaṅgin * nīḷkōval ponnaharum ** - nāngu iḍattum
ninṛān irundān * kiḍandān naḍandānē *
enṛāl keḍumām iḍar
“Even by uttering that in the four sacred places - Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills, Vaikuṇṭha, Tiruveqkā, and the golden city Tirukkkōvalūr, full of lakes covered with flowers, the Lord is in standing, sitting, reclining, and walking (measuring) positions (respectively), all the material miseries will run away.”
2159 iḍar ār paḍuvār? * eḻu neñjē * vēḻam
toḍar vān * koḍu mudalai sūḻnda ** - paḍam uḍaiya
painnāgap paḷḷiyān * pādamē kai toḻudum *
koynnāgap pūmpōdu koṇḍu
“O my heart! Get up, let us worship, with the lovely flowers of the mastwood tree, the lotus feet of the Lord who killed the huge and cruel crocodile which caught (the leg of) the elephant king and who reclines on the hooded and majestic bed of Ananta Śeṣa; why should I continue to suffer from material miseries?”
2160 koṇḍānai allāl * koḍuttārai yār paḻippār? *
maṇ tā ena irandu māvaliyai ** - oṇ tārai
nīr aṅgkai tōya * nimirndilaiyē? * nīḷvisumbil
ār aṅgkai tōya aḍuttu
“When You begged land from King Bali and he also agreed and poured water in Your lovely palm to confirm the offer, didn’t You extend Your body and stretch Your leg which was massaged and worshipped by Brahmā and others in the celestial world? (Despite Your kind gesture to retrieve the planetary system) You are blamed for taking away the land and nobody blames Bali (who gave back what did not belong to him at all)! (It is unfair!)
2161 aḍutta kaḍum pahaiñjaṛku * ātṛṛēn enṛōḍi *
paḍutta perum pāḻi sūḻnda - viḍattaravai **
vallāḷan kaikkoḍutta * māmēni māyavanukku *
allādum āvarō āḷ?
“Will anybody become a servant of any demigod instead of the Lord with incredible body and activities who protected the snake Sumukha, who took shelter of Ananta Śeṣa in fear of Garuḍa, the worst enemy of the snakes, by giving Sumukha to the powerful Garuḍa for protection?”
2162 āḷamar venṛi * aḍukaḷattuḷ aññjānṛu *
vāḷamar vēṇḍi varai naṭṭu ** - nīḷ aravaic
cutṛṛik kaḍaindān * peyar anṛē? * tol naragaip
patṛṛik kaḍattum paḍai
“When the asuras and demigods were fighting, desiring victory for demigods, the Lord, keeping Mandara mountain as the rod, and the long snake Vāsuki as the rope, churned the Ocean of Milk to produce nectar; His name is the vehicle for carrying one over the path of the hellish cycle of birth and death.”
2163 paḍaiyārum vāṭkaṇṇār * pārasi nāḷ * paimpūnt
toḍaiyalōḍu * ēndiya dhūpam ** - iḍai iḍaiyil
mīn māya * māsūṇum veṅkaṭamē * mēloru nāḷ
mān māya eydān varai
“The hill where Rāma, who shot an arrow to kill the magic deer, permanently resides is Veṅkaṭa Hills, where ladies with bright eyes like a spear, wait on dvādaśī day carrying garlands made of fresh flowers and lamps, the dense smoke from which covers the stars in the sky (to worship the Lord).”
2164 varai kuḍai tōḷ kāmbāha * ānirai kāttu * āyar
nirai viḍai ēḻ setṛṛavāṛu ennē! ** - uravuḍaiya
nīrāḻiyuḷ kiḍandu * nērā nisāsarar mēl *
pērāḻi koṇḍa pirān!
“O benevolent Lord reclining in the stormy Ocean of Milk and wielding the mighty disc which You threw on and killed the asuras like Madhu-Kaiṭabha! (When You wield the mighty disc weapon) Why did You lift and hold Govardhana Hills as an umbrella with Your shoulders as the stem (of the umbrella) to protect the herds of cows (instead of sending the disc to kill Indra and stop the rains) and (to marry Nappinnai) take the trouble to tame the seven bulls (instead of killing them with Your disc)?”
2165 pirān! un perumai * piṛar ār aṛivār? *
urāy ulagaḷanda jñānṛu ** - varāhattu
eyitṛṛu aḷavu * pōdāvāṛu en kolō? * endai
aḍikkaḷavu pōnda paḍi
“O benevolent Lord! How come the earth which You (as Trivikrama) measured easily with Your lotus feet was too big for the vast stomach of Your Varāha form (as given in Purāṇa)? Nobody can understand Your pastimes.”
2166 paḍi kaṇḍaṛidiyē? * pāmbaṇaiyinān * puḷ
koḍi kaṇḍaṛidiyē? kūṛāy ** - vaḍiviṛ
poṛi aindum uḷ aḍakkip * pōdoḍu nīr ēndi *
neṛi ninṛa neñjamē! nī
“O my heart fixed in devotional service by controlling the five senses and worshipping (the Lord) with flowers and water! Please tell me if You have had the wonderful experience of worshipping the Garuḍa festoon of the Lord reclining on Ananta Śeṣa or His transcendental body.” (Poigai Āḻvār expresses His ardent desire to worship the Garuḍa festoon and the transcendental body of the Lord).
2167 nīyum tirumagaḷum ninṛāyāl * kunṛeḍuttup
pāyum * pani maṛutta paṇbāḷā ** - vāsal
kaḍaikaḻiyā uḷ pugāk * kāmar pūṅgkōval *
iḍaikaḻiyē patṛṛi ini
“O Lord with auspicious qualities who lifted and held Govardhana Hills to prevent the torrential run tormenting the herds of cows! In Tirukkōvalūr, You and mother Lakṣmī chose to be present in the place (where the three Āḻvārs met) which is neither outside nor inside the shelter, a narrow vestibule; incredible!”[4]
2168 iniyār puguvār * eḻu naraha vāsal? *
muniyādu mūrittāḷ kōmin ** - kani sāyak
kanṛu eṛinda tōḷān * kanai kaḻalē kāṇbadaṛku *
naṅgaṛinda nāvalañsūḻ nāḍu
“The people in Jambūdvīpa have understood the process for worshipping the anklets-ringing lotus feet of the Lord who with His strong shoulders threw the calf demon on the woodapple tree, (where another demon was hiding) and killed both the demons; so, who is there to go to the seven types of hells? (Nobody!) (O Yamadūtas!) Don’t get angry; lock the hells with big locks.”[5]
2169 nāḍilum * nin aḍiyē nāḍuvan * nāḷ tōṛum
pāḍilum * nin pugaḻē pāḍuvan ** - sūḍilum
ponnāḻi ēndinān * ponnaḍiyē sūḍuvēṛku *
ennāgil ennē enakku?
“I desire Your lotus feet only; the whole day I sing Your glories only; I keep only Your lovely lotus feet, adorned with radiant rings, on my head; so, does it matter at all what will happen to me?”
2170 enakkāvār * ār oruvarē! * emperumān
tanakkāvān * tānē matṛṛallāl ** - punakkāyām
pūmēni kāṇap * podi aviḻum pūvaip pū *
māmēni kāṭṭum varam
“Who is equal to me (endowed with the mercy of the Lord)? (Nobody). There is nobody equal to the Lord, He is only equal to Himself; (Nobody is equal to me because) even looking at the dark ironwood or the blossoming pūvai flowers, I am reminded of the Lord’s dark body-hue (and become happy).”
2171 varattāl vali ninaindu * mādhava! nin pādam *
sirattāl vaṇaṅgānām enṛē? ** - urattināl
īrariyāy * nēr valiyōnāya iraṇiyanai *
ōrariyāy nī iḍandadu ūn
“O Mādhava! Did You appear as the mighty Nṛsiṁhadeva and tore off with Your nails the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu, who had become Your powerful enemy, because of His arrogance due to having obtained boons from Brahmā (which he thought made him immortal) and not bowing down to Your lotus feet? (No; it’s only because Your pure devotee Prahlāda was being tortured by him).”
2172 ūnakkurambaiyin * uḷ pukku iruḷ nīkki *
jñānac cuḍarkoḷīi nāḷ tōṛum ** - ēnattu
uruvāy ulagiḍanda * ūḻiyān pādam *
maruvādārkku uṇḍāmō vān?
“Will those who do not bow down daily to the lotus feet of the Lord—who enters our heart and removes the darkness of ignorance and lights up with the knowledge (about Him) and who appeared as a boar and brought up the earth on His tusk—attain Vaikuṇṭha? (Never)”
2173 vānāhit tīyāy * maṛikaḍalāy mārudamāy *
tēnāhip pālām tirumālē! ** - ānāycci
veṇṇey viḻuṅga * niṛaiyumē * munnoru nāḷ
maṇṇai umiḻnda vayiṛu
“O Lord who is the sky, fire, ocean, wind, honey, milk! Will Your stomach which brought out the earth at the end of pralaya be filled by gobbling up the butter churned by mother Yaśodā? (No, it can accommodate any quantity of butter churned by the cowherd women to endow them with Your mercy).”
2174 vayiṛaḻala vāḷuruvi * vandānai añja *
eyiṛilaga vāy maḍittaden nī? ** - poṛi ugirāl
pūvaḍivai īḍaḻitta * ponnāḻik kaiyā! * nin
sēvaḍi mēl īḍaḻiyac cetṛṛu
“O Lord wielding the radiant discin Your hand which is softer than the soft flower! When, to the great distress of Your devotees, Hiraṇyakaśipu came to fight with You with his sword, Your form terrified Him and You kept him on Your lap and tore off his chest with Your mighty nails; (even after killing Him) why were Your lips curled in anger, with Your teeth showing?”
2175 setṛṛeḻundu tīviḻittuc * cenṛa inda ēḻulagum *
matṛṛivai āvenṛu vāy aṅgāndu ** - mutṛṛum
maṛaiyavaṛkuk kāṭṭiya * māyavanai allāl *
iṛaiyēnum ēttādu en nā
“My tongue will not praise any body else other than the incredible Lord who created a huge fire and flood andswallowed the entire material creation during mahā-pralaya and opened His mouth and showed the entire material creation to Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi.”[6]
2176 nā vāyil uṇḍē * namō nāraṇā enṛu *
ōvādu uraikkum urai uṇḍē ** - mūvāda
mākkadikkaṇ sellum * vahai uṇḍē * em oruvar
tīkkadikkaṇ sellum tiṛam?
“Though everyone has a tongue and there is Tiruaṣṭākṣara mantra – ‘namo nārāyaṇa’ which can be incessantly chanted which is the path to attain Vaikuṇṭha from where there is no return to this material world, why some people resort to sense gratification which is the path for destruction?”
2177 tiṛambādu en neñjamē! * seṅgaṇ māl kaṇḍāy *
aṛam pāvam enṛu iraṇḍum āvān ** - puṛam tān im
maṇ tān * maṛikaḍal tān mārudam tān * vān tānē
kaṇḍāy kaḍaikkaṭpiḍi
“O my heart! Know that Lord Puṇḍarīkākṣa grants both bad and good karmic reactions; He is the controller of this earth, the ocean, the wind, the sky, and all other cosmic creations; accept this firmly as the final truth.”
2178 piḍi sēr * kaḷiṛaḷitta pērāḷā! * untan
aḍi sērndu aruḷ petṛṛāḷ anṛē ** - poḍi sēr
anaṛku aṅgai ētṛṛān * avirsaḍai mēl pāynda *
punaṛgaṅgai ennum pērppon
“O benevolent Lord who delivered the elephant king from material sense gratification with she elephants! Ganges, which came down and landed on the matted hair of Rudra (to purify him from his sins because of which) who smears his body with ash and holds agni in his palm, obtained Your grace by washing Your lotus feet.”
2179 pon tigaḻu mēnip * purisaḍai ampuṇṇiyanum *
ninṛulagam tāya neḍumālum ** - enṛum
iruvaraṅgattāl * tirivarēlum * oruvan
oruvan aṅgattu enṛum uḷan
“Though Rudra who has a golden-hued body, matted hair, and is austere, and Lord Trivikrama who measured the planetary systems are in two different forms, Rudra is always a part of the Lord.”
2180 * uḷan kaṇḍāy nanneñjē! * uttaman enṛum
uḷan kaṇḍāy * uḷḷūvār uḷḷattu - uḷan kaṇḍāy **
veḷḷattin uḷḷānum * veṅkaṭattu mēyānum *
uḷḷattin uḷḷān enṛu ōr
“O my good heart! Know that the Lord who is very powerful is our protector; see that He eternally lives in the hearts of His devotees; know that that Lord who reclines in the Ocean of Milk and stands on Tiruveṅkaṭa Hills has entered my heart and is eternally residing there.”
2181 * ōraḍiyum sāḍudaitta * oṇmalarc cēvaḍiyum *
īraḍiyum kāṇalām en neñjē! ** - ōraḍiyin
tāyavanaik kēsavanait * taṇtuḻāy mālai sēr *
māyavanaiyē manattu vai
“O my heart! Keep the Lord—who with one step measured all the planetary systems, who killed the Keśī Demon, and is adorned with a garland of cool tulasī leaves—firmly in your heart; (if you do so), You will be fortunate to worship both His lotus feet – one which measured all the planetary systems and the other, soft as a flower, which kicked and shattered Śakaṭāsura.”

[2] Kaivalya-mokṣa: The Māyāvāda conception of kaivalya and that of the Vaiṣṇava community is different. The Māyāvādī thinks that as soon as one is free from all material contamination, he is merged into the existence of the Supreme. The Vaiṣṇava philosopher’s conception of kaivalya is different. As stated in Bhagavad-gītā, when one is engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Lord, he is immediately situated on the transcendental platform of kaivalya, or Brahman.
[3] Svarupa-siddhi:Every living being, out of many, many billions and trillions of living beings, has a particular relationship with the Lord eternally. That is called svarupa. By the process of devotional service, one can revive that svarupa, and that stage is called svarupa-siddhi-perfection of one's constitutional position.
[4] The three Āḻvārs – Poigai Āḻvār, Būtatāḻvār, Peiāḻvār belong to Dvāpara-yuga (before 4200 BCE). As per legend, the three Āḻvārs met once in a small dark enclosure during a rain in Tirukkōvalūr and suddenly they experienced a fourth individual among them. They found out that it was Lord Viṣṇu and Poigai Āḻvār immediately composed hundred songs. The other two continued composing hundred songs each on Viṣṇu.
[5] Jambūdvīpa: One of the fourteen planetary systems known as Bhū-maṇḍala is like a lotus flower, and its seven islands are compared to the whorl of the lotus. The place known as Jambūdvīpa is in the middle of that whorl.
Hells: Śukadeva Gosvāmī describes the following twenty-eight hells: Tāmisra, Andhatāmisra, Raurava, Mahāraurava, Kumbhīpāka, Kālasūtra, Asi-patravana, Sūkaramukha, Andhakūpa, Kṛmibhojana, Sandaṁśa, Taptasūrmi, Vajrakaṇṭaka-śālmalī, Vaitaraṇī, Pūyoda, Prāṇarodha, Viśasana, Lālābhakṣa, Sārameyādana, Avīci, Ayaḥpāna, Kṣārakardama, Rakṣogaṇa-bhojana, Śūlaprota, Dandaśūka, Avaṭa-nirodhana, Paryāvartana and Sūcīmukha.
[6] Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi: Satisfied by the prayers Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya had offered, the Supreme Lord told him to ask for a benediction, and the sage said he wanted to see the Lord’s illusory energy. The Supreme Lord Śrī Hari, present before Mārkaṇḍeya in the form of Nara-Nārāyaṇa, replied, “So be it,” and then left for Badarikāśrama. One day, as Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya was offering his evening prayers, the water of devastation suddenly flooded the three worlds. With great difficulty Mārkaṇḍeya moved about all alone in this water for a long time, until he came upon a banyan tree. Lying upon a leaf of that tree was an infant boy glowing with a charming effulgence. As Mārkaṇḍeya moved toward the leaf, he was pulled by the boy’s inhalation and, just like a mosquito, drawn within His body. Inside the boy’s body, Mārkaṇḍeya was amazed to see the entire universe just as it had been before the annihilation.
