Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār - Tirukkuruntāṇḍaham
kadiyinaik kañjan māḷak * kaṇḍu mun aṇḍam āḷum **
madiyinai mālai vāḻtti * vaṇaṅgi en manattu vanda *
vidiyinaik kaṇḍu koṇḍa * toṇḍanēn viḍuhilēnē
“I, servant of the Lord, have found out the Lord—who is the (spiritual) wealth; who is like a coral pillar (for bearing and protecting); who is the shelter for the pure devotees; who killed Kaṁsa and protected the world; who always thinks about His devotees; who is the divinity that has entered my heart and is to be praised and worshipped—and will never leave Him.”
2033 kāṭṛinaip punalait tīyaik * kaḍi madiḷ ilaṅgai seṭṛa
ēṭṛinai * imayam mēya * eḻil maṇit tiraḷai ** inba
vāṭṛinai amudam tannai * avuṇan āruyirai uṇḍa
kūṭṛinai * guṇam koṇḍu uḷḷam! * kūṛu nī kūṛumāṛē
“O my heart! Eulogise the auspicious qualities of the Lord—who is the five elements – air, water, fire, etc.; the young bull who devastated Laṅkā protected by ramparts; who resides in Tiruppiridi on the Himālayas; who is like a pile of elegant gemstones; who is the flood of bliss; who is ambrosia; and the nemesis who took away the dear life of Hiraṇyakaśipu—O how wonderfully You are eulogising!”
2034 pāyirum paravai tannuḷ * paruvarai tirittu * vānōrk
kāy irundu amudam koṇḍa * appanai empirānai **
vēyiruñjōlai sūḻndu * viri kadir iriya ninṛa *
māyiruñjōlai mēya * maindanai vaṇaṅginēnē
“I bow down to the majestic and benevolent Supreme Lord who churned the vast Milk Ocean with the huge Mandara Mountain and gave the ambrosia to the demigods; My Lord; and who eternally resides in Tirumāliruñjōlai shaded from the sun by groves of very tall bamboo thickets.”
2035 kēṭka yān uṭṛatuṇḍu * kēḻalāy ulagam koṇḍa *
pūkkeḻu vaṇṇanāraip * pōdarak kanavil kaṇḍu **
vākkināl karumam tannāl * manattināl sirattai tannāl *
vēṭkai mīdūra vāṅgi * viḻuṅginēṛku iniyavāṛē
“(O my Lord!) I wish to ask You something: When I saw in my dream (You), the flower petals-like soft Lord, who as a boar incarnation lifted the earth on His tusk, I embraced (You) very lovingly with my mind, word, and body; what a great bliss it was! Why so?”
2036 irumbu ananṛuṇḍa nīr pōl * emperumānukku * en tan
arum peṛal anbu pukkiṭṭu * aḍimai pūṇḍu uyndu pōnēn **
varum puyal vaṇṇanārai * maruvi en manattu vaittu *
karumbin insāṛu pōlap * paruhinēṛku iniyavāṛē
“Like a red-hot iron imbibes a lot of water (to cool down), I served the Lord with great love and was elevated; I kept that rain cloud-hued Lord, who comes (to the devotee’s place), in my heart and relished Him like sugarcane juice; what a great sweetness it was! Why so?”
2037 mūvaril mudalvanāya * oruvanai ulagam koṇḍa *
kōvinaik kuḍandai mēya * kurumaṇit tiraḷai ** inbap
pāvinaip paccait tēnaip * paimponnai amarar sennip
pūvinai * pugaḻum toṇḍar * en sollip pugaḻvar tāmē?
“How the devotees, who want to glorify (the Lord) will glorify the Supreme Lord who is the first among the Trinity; who begged land (and then secured the planetary systems) from Bali; who resides eternally in Kumbakōṇam; who is like a heap of blue sapphire gemstones; who is sweet like transcendental songs; who is sweet to the tongue like fresh honey; who is desirable like pure gold; and who is a flower adorned on their heads by the nitya-muktas?”
2038 immaiyai maṛumai tannai * emakku vīḍāhi ninṛa *
meymmaiyai virinda sōlai * viyan tiruvaraṅgam mēya **
semmaiyaik karumai tannait * tirumalai orumaiyānai *
tanmaiyai ninaivār endan * talai misai mannuvārē
“Those devotees who meditate on the auspicious qualities of the Lord who provides us material happiness in this world and spiritual bliss in Vaikuṇṭha; who resides eternally in incredible Śrīraṅgam; who appears in red or black hue in different yugas; and who is in standing position in Tirumalai and blesses both the earthly and heavenly beings will be carried on my head.”
2039 vāniḍaip puyalai mālai * varai iḍaip pirasam īnṛa *
tēniḍaik karumbin sāṭṛait * tiruvinai maruvi vāḻār **
māniḍap piṛavi andō! * madikkilar koḷha * tantam
ūniḍaik kurambai vāḻkkaikku * uṛudiyē vēṇḍinārē
“Alas, how the precious human life is wasted! They don’t bother to take shelter of the Lord who is rain-cloud-hued, who is very sweet like the juice of the sugarcane which grew up in the honey collected by bees in the mountain and is very benevolent to the devotees; instead, they desire to lead a materialistic way of life for a long time in the body composed of flesh and blood; please understand this.”
2040 uḷḷamō onṛi nillādu * ōsaiyil eri ninṛu uṇṇum *
koḷḷi mēl eṛumbu pōlak * kuḻaiyumāl endan uḷḷam **
teḷḷiyīr! devarkkellām * devarāy ulagam koṇḍa *
oḷḷiyīr! ummai allāl * eḻumaiyum tuṇaiyilōmē
“My mind doesn’t get fixed on good things; alas, my heart burns like an ant caught in a fire! O effulgent Lord! You are the purest and is the Ultimate Personality of Godhead; in any situation, You are our only shelter.”
2041 cittamum sevvai nillādu * en seyhēn tīvinaiyēn? *
pattimaikku anbuḍaiyēn āvadē? * paṇiyāy endāy! **
muttoḷi maragadamē! * muḻaṅgoḷi muhil vaṇṇā * en
atta! nin aḍimai allāl * yādum onṛu aṛihilēnē
“O Lord! My heart doesn’t remain steady; what can I, this sinful person, do? Please grant me simple devotion; O pearl-like one! O effulgent green emerald-like one! O stormy rain-cloud-hued! My master! I don’t know anything other than devotional service to You.”
2042 toṇḍellām paravi ninnait * toḻudu aḍi paṇiyumāṛu
kaṇḍu * tān kavalai tīrppān āvadē? * paṇiyāy endāy! **
aṇḍamāy eṇtisaikkum * ādiyāy! nīdiyāna *
paṇḍamām parama sōdi! * ninnaiyē paravuvēnē
“My Lord! How is it possible to get rid of my worries by preaching about and engaging in devotional service to You and by bowing down to Your Lotus feet without Your mercy? I worship You, the effulgent light, the Lord of all in the universe, the cause of the demigods in all the eight directions, and rightful wealth!”
2043 āviyai araṅga mālai * aḻukkuḍambu eccil vāyāl *
tūymaiyil toṇḍanēn nān * sollinēn tollai nāmam **
pāviyēn piḻaittavāṛenṛu * añjinēṛku añjal enṛu *
kāvi pōl vaṇṇar vandu * en kaṇṇuḷē tōnṛinārē
“I, with the spit-defiled mouth of this dirty body which is impure and engaged in service in lowly places, chanted Your holy names; I was afraid that I have committed a grave offense, but the blue lotus-hued Lord appeared within my eyes and mercifully told, ‘Fear not.’”
2044 irumbu ananṛuṇḍa nīrum * pōdarum koḷha * endan
arum piṇi pāvam ellām * ahanṛana ennai viṭṭu **
surumbamar sōlai sūḻnda * araṅgamā kōyil koṇḍa *
karumbinaik kaṇḍu koṇḍu * en kaṇṇiṇai kaḷikkumāṛē!
“Please know that even the water imbibed by hot iron can be brought out (with the mercy of the Lord) like my incurable sins and diseases have left me; how my eyes keep looking at and enjoying the beauty of the sugarcane-like sweet Lord who resides in the majestic Śrīraṅgam surrounded by groves swarmed by bumblebees!”
2045 kāviyai venṛa kaṇṇār * kalaviyē karudi * nāḷum
pāviyēnāha eṇṇi * adanuḷḷē paḻuttoḻindēn **
tūvi sēr annam mannum * sūḻ punal kuḍandaiyānai *
pāviyēn pāviyādu * pāviyēn āyinēnē
“I became a gross sinner by repeatedly sinning always thinking about and engaging in sexual union with women whose eyes were more beautiful than the dark blue lotus; I, the sinner, became more sinful by not remembering the Lord of Kumbakōṇam surrounded by water-rich lakes where swans like to live.”
2046 mun polā irāvaṇan tan * mudu madiḷ ilaṅgai vēvittu *
anbināl anuman vandu * āṅgaḍiyiṇai paṇiya ninṛārkku **
enbu elām uruhi ukkiṭṭu * ennuḍai neñjam ennum *
anbināl ñāna nīr koṇḍu * āṭṭuvan aḍiyanēnē
“Hanumān burnt the fortified city of Laṅkā of the evil Rāvaṇa and came back to Kishkindha happily and worshipped the lotus feet of Rāma (describing the events); I will bathe that Lord with the water of love flowing from my heart and the melting bones.”
2047 māya mān māyac ceṭṛu * marudiṛa naḍandu * vaiyam
tāya mā paravai poṅgat * taḍavarai tirittu * vānōrkku
īyum māl empirānārkku * ennuḍaic coṛkaḷ ennum *
tūya mā mālai koṇḍu * sūṭṭuvan toṇḍanēnē
“My Lord killed the magical deer; He crawled in between the twin arjuna trees and brought them down; He measured the planetary systems; He churned the vast ocean of Milk with Mandara Mountain as the churning rod and gave the ambrosia to the demigods; I will decorate that incredible Lord with the pure and majestic garland of my words.”
2048 pēsinār piṛavi nīttār * pēr uḷān perumai pēsi *
ēsinār uyndu pōnār * enbadu ivvulagin vaṇṇam **
pēsinēn ēsa māṭṭēn * pēdaiyēn piṛavi nīttaṛku *
āsaiyō peridu koḷha * alai kaḍal vaṇṇar pālē
“Those who sang the glories of the Lord in Tiruppēr were delivered is a fact known from the scriptures; but am I, this ignoramus, qualified to glorify Him? Those (like Śiśupāla) who abused the Lord and His glories attained liberation, but I will not engage in abusing Him; however, my desire to get delivered from the cycle of birth and death and attain the ocean-hued Lord is strong, what to do?”
2049 iḷaippinai iyakkam nīkki * irundu mun imaiyaik kūṭṭi *
aḷappil aimpulan aḍakki * anbu avar kaṇṇē vaittu **
tuḷakkamil sindai seydu * tōnṛalum suḍar viṭṭu * āṅgē
viḷakkinai vidiyin kāṇbār * meymmaiyaik kāṇgiṛpārē
“If a yogi wants to see the Lord in His effulgent form, by ceasing his actions/conditions which lead to miseries; sitting (on an āsana) without moving, with half-closed eyes, and controlling the five senses, and unceasingly meditating as given in the scriptures, will he be able to see Him? (No, unless out of causeless mercy, the Lord shows Himself it’s not possible to see Him).[1]
2050 * piṇḍiyār maṇḍai ēndip * piṛar manai tiridandu uṇṇum *
muṇḍiyān sābam tīrtta * oruvan ūr ** ulagam ēttum
kaṇḍiyūr araṅgam meyyam * kacci pēr mallai enṛu
maṇḍinār * uyyal allāl * maṭṛaiyārkku uyyalāmē?
“Only those devotees who glorify and worship the celebrated holy abodes—like Tirukkaṇḍiyūr, Tiruvaraṅgam, Tirumeyyam, Tirukkacci, Tiruppēr, or Tirumallai of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who relieved the curse on the clean shaven-headed Rudra who survived by begging from house to house carrying a powdery skull (of Brahmā)—will be delivered; is there any chance of deliverance for others? (No).”
2051 * vānavar taṅgaḷ kōnum * malar misai ayanum * nāḷum
tēmalar tūvi ēttum * sēvaḍic ceṅgaṇ mālai **
mānavēl kaliyan sonna * vaṇtamiḻ mālai nālaindum *
ūnamadinṛi vallār * oḷi visumbāḷvar tāmē
“Those who thoroughly learn and recite this garland of twenty pure Tamiḻ songs rendered by Tirumaṅgaiyāḻvār who wields a victorious spear—about the red lotus-like eyed Lord whose red lotus-like feet are worshipped with honey-rich flowers by Indra, the king of the celestial world and Brahma born on a lotus flower—will attain Vaikuṇṭha.”
